If it seems like Davosh is taking a lot, it's only because some are witch exclusives. Some I'd give to someone else after teaching my familiar the spell. The other room had an alchemist's workshop, so I'll assume we find some empty potion vials.

I would like the 2nd scroll of Cure Mod, and I will teach Liska anything you want me to. The CLW potions should go to Kappi and Ali. 2nd Enlarge person, Ali.
My statement for the Ring of Regen is that my life link stops bleed damage. Now I know currently I can only have 1 life link at a time, but each oracle level I take I can add and additional link. I plan on getting 1 more Paladin level, then taking a few Oracle levels.
Ali'yanah D'ohr'hein |
I've copied the treasure list to my profile, in the "undivided loot" spoiler. I'm unclear on whether scrolls used to learn spells disappear (I thought they did), so I've left those in the list. I've removed anything from the list that S "assigned" to folks and/or folks claimed (btw I grabbed one CLW potion)
please speak up if there's anyting I've missed/forgotten, or if someone claims something so I can keep that list up to date.
I'm also thinking of taking a pot of enlarge, for the reach. If there are no objections...

Those scrolls DO disappear.
Edward, I can't learn spells from you, but I can burn the scrolls to teach Liska. Once you confirm that you're okay with it, I'll do it.

The party earns 1500 xp for defeating the winter witch in charge of the Pale Tower in Nazheena's absence, and a story award (1000 xp) for shutting down the portal.

Okay, feedback time.
Setting aside the pace — I have some ideas I hope will speed things up a bit — let's talk about the state of the campaign. What is working? What isn't? What do you wanna change? Etc.
- I'm more than a little out of practice with doling out XP (4+ years of PFS exclusively will do that to ya, LOL) but I'm willing to keep it up cos I'm reminded of how much it's a "little victory" that lets the players keep track of how things are going.
- I'm a bit perplexed by the NPC roles in this one. Nadya is supposed to fit a lot of roles, but I think she's more often a distraction from you guys as heroes. Right now, no one needs to take her over as a PC, so I'm going to fade her into the background a little more — she likely won't be on the maps unless it's necessary. Which leads into...
- How is everyone with their PC build? Now is an ideal time to retrain or replace what you have.
Thoughts, everyone? I'll do my best to not have thin skin about any criticism. (Not always my best trait, but I'm trying. LOL)
Davosh the Wanderer |
My point of view is a little different. With the exception of TS I play more Pathfinder than anyone else. This is my ONLY outlet for campaign play as a player. I'm happy with things the way they are.
I don't have any desire to switch stuff out. I get that the pace can bother some, but I have an unreasonable amount of games at an given time, so I'm okay with it.
I'm ready for book 2 ...almost I would like to spend some time shopping and writing scrolls. I'm cool with PFS style or campaign style shopping.
Also I totally get fading the NPC to the back. Around level 7 or so if someone wanted to take Leadership....

As for XP, it's a pain, but I have to say I LOVE the old school numbers. I have been avoiding reading RoW specifically for spoilers, so I don't know how "chapter" driven it is. I am totally fine with doing chapter XP rewards where it gets added up and put into one award.
If it's anything like Runelords and Crimson Throne I'd think it's a good pace.

I used to be the one on top of XP, but over the past few years I seem to have changed my gaming style in that regard...I trust someone else to do it, and they'll tell me when I ding. So, I abstain.

I have no problem with that. NPCs need to be a real part of the story in order to have longevity, IMHO. I saw her as a means to an end for this chapter, really--a reason to go to the tower.
How is everyone with their PC build? Now is an ideal time to retrain or replace what you have.
I'm still undecided about the magus class. This is my first try with this so I'm not sure...how to do it, really. But I have no desire to change anything yet.
I think you're doing a fine job, bro. No complaints.
I would like to reverse the question and find out if you, as DM, find anything we as a group (or me as an individual player) is doing that you find troublesome...

Setting aside the pace — I have some ideas I hope will speed things up a bit — let's talk about the state of the campaign. What is working? What isn't? What do you wanna change? Etc.
I know I have been the most vocal on things, but so far I'm ok with how things are working out. I can say I am as unfamiliar with PFS as you are with non-PFS. The two are similar, but very different. I don't know about the rest here, but I guess that I do feel a little rushed / dropped into some encounters at very disadvantageous positions, where some out of the box solutions / unconventional warfare tactics could be used. Not a critisim, but I like a less "on the rails" feel to things. But then again that might slow the "pace" even more. So I'm very torn.

I do like keeping a track of XP, but if the others want to have you just award a level here and there I'm ok with it. I do this in some of my table top games, but with this it was horrible looking for months at no progression.

I'm ok with this. Just a suggestion, but you might let us use a "Nadya" assist of a +2 for "appropriate" rolls when / if needed to either simulate her there, or to represent tidbits of info that she would have/ might have passed along in casual conversations along the way.
How is everyone with their PC build? Now is an ideal time to retrain or replace what you have.
This I am torn about. I hate having a healer that heals in combat, so this is the only way I could figure and still be able to take actions. What does everyone think, how is the Oradin working out?
I will also pose the same questions that Ali did. Critique me. I already know I don't bite my tongue, but please understand none of it was or is malicious, just a conversation.

Also I'm pretty sure that Edward is going to get the Ring of Regeneration, but let it be known that:
- Either DMTS is an extremely benevolent DM and put that in there for us. If so thank you!
- or, If the writer of this adventure put it there, it isn't a Ring of Regeneration... this is screaming <channel Admiral Ackbar>"IT'S A TRAP" </endchannel>
Kappi Matarito |
Actually Joe, Im pretty impressed with your Oradin. Adam and I feel you are pretty bugger good in the healbot department. And you can swing a long sword or shoot a long bow when needed. I know paladins get some cool stuff at 4th level too.
Kappi Matarito |
DM Thunderspirit, I generally pretty happy with things. Ive been pretty "out of the loop" with D&D stuff for the last 10-15 years. Ive only been playing the play by post for the last few years with Chris.
Im totally enjoying my rogue. I normally am big into playing warriors and priest/cleric types so this is a change and really fun for me. I really love the PbP format for bringing your characters to life.
I do sort of understand some of Joe's comments on using more "real" tactics in combat. However, they dont always work so well according to the rules. Generally speaking Im willing to accept that and just go with the rules.
As said before, Im pretty happy and having a good time playing the game.
GM thunderspirit |
XP remains as we're doing it. I'll just hafta get back into practice. LOL
Also I totally get fading the NPC to the back. Around level 7 or so if someone wanted to take Leadership...
Eff that. No Leadership. :-P
Gonna put the kibosh on that right now with five players. To be as fair as possible, if someone was actually building toward that, please consider this leave to rebuild toward something else.

Like most APs, this one is point A to point B to point C. Being that it's my first time running one, I'm sticking pretty close to the script, so it's less sandbox-y than my campaigns have been in the past. But them I'm older, have considerably less free time and energy, and I'm kinda liking it that way.
That said, I'm receptive to something less conventional if y'all want that. Discuss away, if that's your wish.
Regarding the PC builds:
Edward is doing precisely what a life oracle should do, and he's decent in a fight with the paladin levels. (The only thing broken about witches is the Slumber hex.) Vojtek is a meat cleaver who is (hopefully) learning that diversity in tactics may not be such a Bad Thing [tm]. :-) Kappi, you can opt to try the Unchained rogue in the future if you want, but if you're content the way your rogue is going there's no need to change him up.
As for Ali, there are several choices of a direction to take any magus; one error I do see a lot of is those who try to make their magus a wizard type. A magus is not a wizard. It is a magical beatstick that is a lousy fighter when out of spells, but a lousy wizard when forgetting about melee. Remember that and you'll do fine.
Meanwhile, Davosh has already learned the biggest downside of a witch; they're terrific against a single BBEG but multiple opponents can give them fits. (Not that I have a 10th level witch in PFS or anything.) The spell selection isn't too much of a hindrance when you factor in the hexes, but dealing damage is not your strong suit. In this party, though, that's largely okay, plus you fill in where Ali lacks spell power to boot.
GM thunderspirit |
I would like to reverse the question and find out if you, as DM, find anything we as a group (or me as an individual player) is doing that you find troublesome...
Right now I'm pondering some tweaks to the initiative thing. I rather like the way DMS does it in his games, but I'm not yet ready to do that here. (It'll be an adoption for my PFS PbPs though!) For the time being, we'll stick with the before baddies/after baddies round. If y'all will put down what we added for the last couple of fights "Ali's second turn, Davosh's third turn" that works.
We're also getting to the point where class abilities change action times (standard becomes a move, move becomes a swift, and so on). As part of everyone's turn, if you've got something that's unconventional (let's say there was a feat that let you attack as a swift action, though mercifully there's not), just identify the action (swift action to activate Arcane Strike, standard used as a move, free action to keep singing, etc.).
Apart from that, I'm pretty good. We can put this largely on hiatus until after Gen Con.
Chris Marsh |
Hehe... I forgot, you already gave your thoughts on leadership:-)
Initiative in PbP is always a hard thing, and I'm still not 100% happy with my technique either. (I rather like Endlessforms way of displaying it.)
Thank you for the post Gen Con pause. I'll be back in action a week from Monday!

I'm contemplating switching / retraining a bit. I'm looking at a melee build. It seems that's where I'm needed more and more, and the ranges have seemed very close. The drawbacks are I might need my HP's for myself, so less healbotty. But I would do more damage if I changed my stats to str instead of Dex, and fewer feats to add any kind of damage. Contemplating, looking for opinions.
Vojtek Wartooth |
Combat seems to start with a rapid zoom in and a cut to "combat mode" a la Final Fantasy. Our dudes lined up on the left, bad dudes lined up on the right, aaaaaaand BEGIN!
I'm with Joe, allow us to develop the engagement if we aren't surprised. It takes longer but the joy of combat is often in the 5 to 10 minutes of sneaky sneaky before the first d20 hits the table.
Those sweet plans to tilt the odds are the most memorable part for me.
Kappi Matarito |
Those sweet plans to tilt the odds are the most memorable part for me.
One of my more memorable D&D moments was when Adam and I (honestly cant remember which game/campaign, hard when I was always playing a cleric), took the hinges off a door and were able to use it like a tower shield and rush a couple archers...
After that moment, a common question to the DM would be "are the hinges on our side of the door?"Davosh the Wanderer |
It's STILL a common question.
It's harder to pull off, but not impossible. One of the things that makes it hard is that none of us scout or stealth. (I have run Part I of this, and yes the scenes are a bit Final Fantasy-like, but it's far more tolerable in PbP.

Have actually been reading up on that.
Summon plot propellant:
You return to Waldsby amidst a frenzy of activity. Some of the local populace wasn't fond of you already, and all are well aware of the retribution your actions will have wrought. Everyone is pretty certain it's time to get the eff out of Anatevka Dodge Waldsby.
For simplicity's sake: The White Weasel, the town storehouse, and the town sawmill are all essentially closed to you due to their proprietors' close ties with Nazhena and the White Witches. You can buy anything mundane at Verana's Sundries; you can get appropriate stuff from the town blacksmith or the village chapel (the local priest is 1st level and doesn't have Scribe Scroll, alas); and you already have the stuff Nadya could give you. Nadya's neighbor, incidentally, has been huddled with her kids since you all left, and is happy to see her return safely, though knowledgeable of the resultant coming storm.
Given our discussions about NPCs, we'll say this: Nadya's children will stay with her cousins in Ellsprin. She asks your aid to take them there en route to guiding you to Whitethrone, where her late husband's Uncle Ringeirr is a fisherman on the outskirts of the capital city. She tells you in a hushed voice that Ringeirr has a rumored reputation as a skilled smuggler — which he has never confirmed to her — and always had just what was needed just when it was needed. If he is still alive, she is certain he can help you get some of what you need.

I checked out the unchained rogue. Looks pretty sweet. Id like to change Kappi over to it. I think it fits him well.
I know Im not 5th level yet, but I dont understand the rogue's edge ability. What are skill unlock powers? What would that mean if I chose it for perception, stealth, disable device?

They are essentially extra things that no one else can do with that skill. You cam find these abilities in the skill descriptions.

If you cant get enough restful sleep during the day, then its probably pretty rough.
Working midnights is the best. I dont have any rushhour traffic to deal with. There is only one Captain/Lt/Commander working at night and unless there is a dead body he/she generally doesnt bother you.
And sometimes its slow and you can make throwing targets for axes...
