So, since Calden fell to his death, now it's up to you to decide what to do with his corpse. I would allow Korech to fish it with a ranged touch attack made against AC 10 with a grappling arrow, so you can later resurrect him via salve of the second chance.
Shirzon the Quarter RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32 |
I believe Merephel has the salve, since I think we gave most of the healing consumables to her.
Poor Calden. I was hoping our Kassen's Boon scales might help, but they're self re-roll only. At least we can retrieve his body (assuming we don't die in the meantime). Here's hoping the lava damage roll is high so that Calden doesn't have to take a couple of rounds to go unconscious.
Merephel Angorat |
I didn't think I had it, but it is possible I simply didn't realize it was in my possession. I don't know if we ever declared, to be honest.
If we need to rereat, we can. I can give Korech my potion of Hide from Undead, and he can come back long enough to fish Calden out, and we try again, or even give up on being so close to the Razmirans to let Merephel prepare Hide from Undead so we can all sneak past. Giving the Razmirans a day is terrible, but at least we would be alive to try and stop them.
Calden Tigg |
I had hoped for a low dice rolls (like all 1's, realistically) so that I could pull off an amazing comeback, jumping out of the molten gold to finish the dragon. Alas. :)
To weigh in on the current topic, I also thought Merephel had the salve. She has most of the curative party items, so that's the only thing that would make sense.

Adjusted action. If Korehc can get up on that ledge, he will. If I can produce the rope and swing for Calden same round, I'll do that as well although not sure what kind of roll you want.

For Korech's reference. You can do it!
Shirzon the Quarter |
Oh, man, I'm sorry Merephel. I was so concerned with getting the flank so I could actually get some damage in that I totally forgot that it would probably have reach when I told you to move up. I think if Korech can hit it with enough arrows, we still have a chance, but I don't know if retreat is an option. Unless Korech runs away and comes back later to stealthily grapple-arrow our unconscious bodies back, but that seems like a literal and figurative long shot.
Merephel Angorat |
It's okay, I get it. Not to worry!
Korech |
We did fine - there's always ways to do things tactically better but that's a hard fight and the dice were brutal. That said I was half-convinced we'd have a TPK so yay! That was harrowing.
Shirzon the Quarter |
I'm crossing my fingers for a bugbear. ;)
Merephel Angorat |
Oh, it looks like Giuseppe beat me to it! That's what I get for looking up funeral marches online mid-post!
Shirzon the Quarter |
I left my post vague about healing because I don't know if I should use all wand charges or if Merephel wants to use any channels or if we have any other consumables (potions from the cultists?). Thoughts?
Merephel Angorat |
I say burn more of the wand, and I'll use a few Channels too. Not use all of one, so we still have more healing available across more PCs. I'll use two Channels:
Channel Positive Energy: 6d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 3, 5, 5, 1) = 19
That pus me back to full, with Korech's healing. Thanks for that by the way!
Shirzon the Quarter |
Thanks Merephel!
I'll roll my wand healing here.
CLW, 5 charges: 5d8 + 5 ⇒ (3, 7, 4, 5, 4) + 5 = 28
Calden Tigg |
Woo, that's a lucky break. I was worried that Dimi wouldn't have me anymore if I came home as a bugbear.
I'll take some time today to write a proper post, deserving of the occasion and the effort that the others have put in. Giuseppe, do you habe a deadline for today, for when you want to continue with the action? Would be helpful for me, to know how much time I have.
Shirzon the Quarter |
It suddenly occurred to me that Calden's equipment probably also took 87 fire damage from the molten gold. Feel free to select anything from my character sheet if you need equipment. Maybe the loot sheet has some things of interest as well (I know we had a backup pair of bracers of armor +1. Then again, I don't know how much was in your bag of holding vs Korech's. If we never specified, maybe we can roll 50/50 to see what survived?
Edit: also, I assume we at least gave him a blanket or something, because otherwise I have to imagine Calden naked for the past few posts...
GM Giuseppe |
Hey guys, sorry for my silence but I have a high fever and I'm not able to post optimally. And since these are the last encounter of our whole campaign, I do not want to ruin them by writing my posts while I have a fever. I'll be back as soon as I get better.
In the meantime: Calden's equipment has been completely destroyed. I would say that Shirzon's method to determine wheter one item is in Korech's or Calden's bag is fine.
Shirzon the Quarter |
So I picked out the stuff from the loot sheet that was unclaimed and worth rolling for. Since its 50% chance, I'll roll to see what was burned up.
1d2, 1 is destroyed, 2 is survived:
Lizardfolk chief's bracers
1d2 ⇒ 2
Potion: Invisiblity
1d2 ⇒ 1
Brooch of shielding (85 points)
1d2 ⇒ 2
There we have it!
Giuseppe, I hope you feel better soon! No rush, you should focus on getting better!
Merephel Angorat |
Rest up! We'll be here.
Calden Tigg |
I've updated Calden's sheet, and started with removing all of his gear. That means I end up with the following:
- A bit of regular clothing
- The Horn of fog, since Merephel had it when I fell off the bridge
- The Brooch of shielding, Shirzon rolled for that one
- The chieftain's Bracers of armor +1, Shirzon rolled for that one.
- A spare dagger and sling, from Shirzon's backpack
- 5 javelins, from the loot sheet.
1d2 for the five javelins, 2 = survived: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Shirzon the Quarter |
Just wanted to pop in, as I'm not used to this campaign going silent for a day. :P
I'm assuming our dear GM is still feeling sick. Take your time getting better! Sending some more well wishes your way!
GM Giuseppe |
I'm starting to feel better today, but I've been sick for the last few days although I managed to gather my energies and post on Saturday. More likely than not, I'm going to restart my posting routine today ;)
Merephel Angorat |
You may not know this Calden, but you get +4 on Acrobatics Checks to jump for every 10 feet your speed is above 30. Since your speed is 50, that's +8 you may not be factoring in!
Monks are crazy.
Calden Tigg |
You're right, I forgot about that. And that's even before the +20 to Acrobatics I can gain by spending a ki point? That's pretty crazy indeed.
On an unrelated note, I have a 3-day course coming up for work, starting tomorrow. I should still be able to keep up with posting, but my time in the morning to write a post might be a bit sparse.
Merephel Angorat |
As for the weapon Merephel gets, that's going to be a +1 Shocking Light Mace. Her ancestors will have a longsword (him) and warhammer (her).
I'll use the Pearl of Power for Bless as well. Protection from Evil on Calden and Shirzon, and Shield of Faith on Merephel and Korech. Merephel will cast Invisibility Purge on herself, and Bear's Endurance and Protection from Chaos on Calden. Lastly, she'll cast Sanctuary on herself.
When the group is ready, she'll use her luck power on whoever is first through the door.
Calden Tigg |
Giuseppe, to be fair Calden did not stun Iramine last round. I chose to apply fatigued instead (which would last the entire fight, which is why I started off with that). I think she would still get to act normally this round?

Shirzon the Quarter |
From your description, Giuseppe, it sounds like Iramine has a blur spell up (or something similar). I don't know if you've already taken it into account, but if she has any sort of concealment then she's immune to my sneak attacks.
GM Giuseppe |
Hey everyone, I'll be away from home for two days (from April, 24th to April 25th) and I don't know if I'll be able to find a decent web connection. If you don't hear anything from me in these days, please rest assured that I've not vanished from the boards just when we're going to close our adventures. I'll make a good and detailed final post on April, the 26th. In the meantime, please use these days to provide me with the answers I asked for in my last post (those are very important in order to determine the conclusion of the campaign arc).
Great job Heroes of Kassen!
Shirzon the Quarter |
Great job, friends! Giuseppe, if you see this before you're away, do you know how long we've been on the island and in the city? That might affect how long Shirzon stays to nab some gold...
Merephel Angorat |
I was totally going to hit her with a Dispel Magic too. Glad I didn't, seeing that Ring of Counterspells.
I vote we leave the cursed Jewel here. Source of way too much trouble. Wouldn't hurt to see if there was anything in particular that Iramine was here for, just to be safe though.
Merephel will probably leave the riches here. She's a bit convinced that everything here is cursed.
Korech |
I see Korech doing the Bilbo Baggins thing. A little chest of gold to settle into a long quiet life with.
Calden Tigg |
Woohoo! Great job everyone.
Like Shirzon, it'd be good to know how much time we have left for our rendez-vouz with Captain Walren.
Then, on each topic:
Jewel: I agree with Merephel, to leave it here.
The amulet: This one I'm conflicted on. It was never meant to be here. Maybe we split it up again, and keep the parts among ourselves? Calden would appreciate the history-repeating-aspect. :)
Riches: Calden doesn't care about that. He'd probably caution the others, and urge for plenty of time to get back to the boat. Also, he'd mention that there's risk involved in staying in the city, from its guardians, and that we've already completed what we came for. However, he won't stop anyone from taking stuff. :)
GM Giuseppe |
Great job, friends! Giuseppe, if you see this before you're away, do you know how long we've been on the island and in the city? That might affect how long Shirzon stays to nab some gold...
I've not been keeping a counter of the time you spent on the Island of Terror or in the City of Golden Death.
GM Giuseppe |
Maybe you can find it out yourselves. I was only keeping an eye on the three days from the City opening limit, but your character cannot know when Iramine opened the city in the first time, so even if they knew how much time they spent in the city, they would not be able to determine how much time they've left to search the city for treasures.
Calden Tigg |
That's a great and fitting ending. Interesting that all the gold turned out to be worthless. Makes me wonder what would have happened if Iramine had made it out with the Jewel. Would that also have been worthless out of the city? :*)
I'll make my closing post this weekend, to give it the time it deserves. As a teaser, I think Calden would propose to Dimi upon returning to Kassen (dying makes him realize he has no time to waste), and ask Merephel for the ceremony. Seems fitting, doesn't it? :)
I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again at least once more, but thanks Giuseppe for an awesome campaign. You really brought the story to life, which is the most important part of a roleplay game for me. Thanks also to Shirzon, Merephel and Korech, for creating and playing such wonderful characters. We really did make a treat team!

Shirzon the Quarter |
I'm also working on my closing post. Giuseppe has got a pretty good read on Shirzon's plans for the future, I gotta say, but I'm thinking I'll throw a little twist on it.
Thanks for a great ending to a great PbP, everyone! Giuseppe, thank you for all your hard work and an excellent campaign. I hope you enjoyed running it as much as I enjoyed playing it! Likewise thanks to the other players, for making a great team and putting up with all of Shirzon's scowling. :)
Korech |
I had actually not quite thought of how Korech would turn out, but Giuseppe's ideas gave me something to riff off of. I don't quite see Korech as someone who would work well in a conventional army, but Nirmathas' army is half random guys with bows who show up, and so could go off of that.
This was a fantastic ending and thanks so much for the hard work Giuseppe. I really appreciate the care and thought that goes into how you structured this game from the pacing, to writing style, to the really cool formatting you use.
It is so satisfying to actually end a game, even if it is bittersweet to say goodbye to these great characters.
Merephel Angorat |
I have a few ideas I am kicking around for my last post as well.
Thank you all for this amazing cooperative storytelling experience. We made a great team, and this has been a great game.
Giuseppe, you've been the best PbP GM I've ever had. Really, not an exaggeration. Thank you for everything you've done for us. This game has set a high bar, and I feel blessed to have been able to just be a part of it.
