Good point. For one thing, if I'd thought of it we might have gotten you a bonus on your save just by Barkot trying a Heal check to treat disease with the bonus from the healer's kit. If everyone's OK with taking 40gp less, we can add:

- 2 scrolls of Diagnose Disease (level 1 spell, provides a +4 to the Heal check to treat disease)
- 1 scroll of Delay Disease ( level 2 spell, duration 1 day; "The target becomes temporarily immune to disease. Any disease to which it is exposed during the spell’s duration does not affect the target until the spell’s duration has expired. If the target is currently infected with a disease, you must make a caster level check against the disease’s DC to suspend it for the duration of the spell; otherwise, that disease affects the target normally. Delay disease does not cure any damage a disease may have already done.")

I'm not 100% committed to the scroll of Delay Disease because of the caster level check, but it has the virtue of being cheaper than Remove Disease, which has the same problem and is more expensive (375gp vs. 150gp). I think we're better off attempting to treat a disease with a Heal check first, then if necessary trying to delay progression with the lower level (and lower-priced) scroll until we can get back to town, instead of putting a lot of gold into a Remove Disease scroll that may well fail. I could be persuaded otherwise, but I could also be persuaded just to buy the scrolls of Diagnose Disease and call it done.

Last thing - on the golembane scarab, nobody needs to wear it or activate it until it’s needed and whoever has it can switch out their neckwear in a round (or less?) when the time comes. Deric can go for the bling or let someone else take it for the moment, but I think it’s a safe bet that it is not a question of if we’ll need it, just when, and IMO the 45% sale value is a good incentive to keep things we find.

I agree with Barkot's astute assessment regarding disease. For now, anyway, Squint has an antiplague on his person that he can let Paeral have. Paeral, just let me know. I believe that Squint had to burn 1 PP a few weeks back in gameplay to rid himself of filth fever. Paeral could do that as well.

Deric, Squint would take you up on the offer of a loan as long as usurious repayment rates were to be avoided. Perhaps an 'IOU' document? He would need to borrow 300gp and 1 cp. (!!!)

If that's alright, then Boots of Readiness it is! They are fashionably tight, so I'd want to wear them to this ceremony, if possible. I also was just reading - they're scaling magical items, which means that new powers will unlock as Squint gets higher in level. A most excellent investment.

As for Diagnose Disease, it is a good spell. I will additionally allow a Heal check from anyone who is trained to sit down with Paeral and discuss the symptoms, if the nature of the disease (and the resulting bonus to treating it) is important.

2. Resist Energy
New languages: Azlanti, Shoanti

I am actually surprised, I thought Deric had joined the party before the last encounter with Nikulaie, but it appears that meeting was almost two of our years ago. I can't believe it has taken us that long to get through Book 1!

Hey all, sorry for dropping off the face of the world for a bit there. Moving day was Monday and we didn't get internet up until Tuesday and I'm honestly still pretty wiped out. Some IRL changes for me mean I'm struggling really hard to keep up with all the games I've committed to over the past few months/years and I just don't think I have enough bandwidth, or will again in the near future.

I've struggled with this decision but I think I'm going to have to bow out of this campaign. Thank you so very much for including me, and I hope you all go on to have a great time.

I think the module designers have it in for metagamers. ;)

They are also finally starting to advance monsters and structure combats that are at the expected level of the party.

I was doing a lot of that myself earlier, in an effort to keep the combats at least a little interesting. In hindsight, I should have simply bypassed many of the encounters in this dungeon, as they have nothing to do with the plot and are just slowing things down.

That is one piece of advice I have garnered from conversations with other successful AP GMs that I intend to attempt to implement in the coming book.

Roger that. I hope it didn't sound like complaining, just that some encounters, especially that damn derro, surprised me. I've fought derros many times in other scenarios and their AC was nowhere near that high...

The current encounter was not as surprising, it's just that I'm so used to regular giant spiders and such, that I assumed these would have similar AC...which is what I get for assuming...

Shattered Star Maps

I did not read it as complaining.

Advanced plus a special "template", 4th level alchemist, mutagen, Shield.

She had time to prep and set her homonculi to watch for your approach, and she was essentially the big boss.

I confess that I've been playing fast and loose with lance rules. I've gone ahead and had Squint's lance drop to the ground as I can't find anywhere where his lance would have been able to have been held in place, regardless of the special saddle, if he had been using his crossbow. My bad.

The obvious answer would be a switch to story based levelling. We've been levelling in line with what the story intends anyways.

I could go either way, but I don't think we need to replace Reillana. She added plenty to the party - both for roleplaying and mechanically - but I feel like we've got the basic roles covered well enough.

Squint, are you planning on continuing to invest in UMD? If so, between the two of us and the usual consumables, we ought to be able to cover healing needs, especially once Barkot gets a mnemonic vestment, which will save us money on scrolls (and makes them usable at party caster level instead of the minimum level used to create the scroll for caster level checks to remove things). We don’t have great utility casting, but we have enough, and we have great martial capabilities.

We can cover most skills, except for knowledges. The more I think about it, I think knowledge skills are really our only hole, which was true even before we lost Reillana because of her archetype, and there are things we can do to upgrade those (beyond just adding ranks when we level up), like buying Pathfinder Journals for the competence bonus when we have a few rounds to look something up. If we do start looking for a 5th PC, I’d push for someone to fill that gap - an investigator, for example, would be perfect.

DESCRIPTION
The Shard of Greed is made of black adamantine.

on attack rolls.

The ioun stone additionally confers a +2 bonus to Strength.

(NOTE: Note that the Haste spell is cast at the character level of weilder)

The party will need to determine who will carry the Shard of Pride and Shard of Green going forward.

Whoo-hoo!

I'll try to work through the details this afternoon but I'd like to have Barkot scribe a couple of scrolls from his own spells known. Squint, if you want to collaborate on any scrolls of your spells, Barkot will be happy to do so (although the cost would be up to you).

As for the shard, I think it would make sense for Squint or Deric to carry it. Both would benefit from the +2 Strength, and making sure the Squint/Ulyi combination are always in range to get the benefit of the 1/day haste would be devastating, with Deric a close second. Although a hasted, rapid-shotting Paëral would chew up the bad guys very nicely...

TL;DR: I don’t think Barkot ought to carry the Shard of Greed, and it’s best to get everyone with haste if possible (but Barkot is least important if range is an issue).

@GM - Could you link to the post with the info on the shard of pride and associated ioun stone when you have a moment - or just repost the info - please? Also, is there any downside that we're aware of to having the same PC carry two shards? I am not suggesting we do this now, but unless we boost the party size to seven, or someone takes Leadership, I suspect that sooner or later we're going to end up with more shards than characters.

Edit to Add: Never mind, I found it: Shard of Pride Also, the ioun stone gives +2 Int, with ranks in Knowledge (History) and Thassilonian for the language.

Edited Again to Add: I think we can make more use of the 1/day major image from the Shard of Pride. Barkot would happy to carry the Pride Shard, although he already knows Thassilonian. He has 2 background skill ranks in Knowledge (History); I'd like to have more but have needed to put ranks into other skills that are prerequisites to the Runeguard prestige class. The +2 Int bonus would be nice because once he starts taking levels in Runeguard, he goes from 4+Int to 2+Int skill ranks per level. But there's nothing special about Barkot's claim on it, so if someone else wants to carry it, please speak up.

Though it makes absolutely no sense, retraining is possible.

Taking two hours each, Barkot scribes one scroll of resist energy and one of cure moderate wounds, each at caster level 4 (using the CRB rules for sorcerers creating scrolls, that should be the minimum caster level for an oracle to scribe a scroll of a 2nd level spell), which requires a DC 9 Spellcraft check. He scribes two more scrolls, one of ears of the city and the other of obscuring mist, each at caster level 1, which requires a DC 6 Spellcraft check. Taking 10 on Spellcraft gets him a 19 on each check.

Cost to scribe scroll of 2nd level spell, CL 4, 100gp each
Cost to scribe scroll of 1st level spell, CL 1, 12.5gp each
Total=(100x2)+(12.5x2)=225 gp

Barkot also buys a volume of the Pathfinder Chronicles focused on events of historical importance (after 1d4 rounds of reading, grants +2 competence bonus to Knowledge (history) check).

@GM - Are you sure Barkot could retrain out of Thassilonian? As I read the retraining rules, they would allow him to "retrain" by learning an additional language on top of the languages granted by his intelligence bonus and ranks in Linguistics, but I don't see anything that lets him forget one and learn a new one in its place.

Shattered Star Maps

I think it would fall under retraining skill ranks. If you feel bad about the fact that it says you are a skill rank to a "different skill" you could train out of a rank of linguistics then back in... Works easier if you don't actually want an additional language.

Male CG Half-Orc (Shaman's Apprentice) Oracle (Seeker) 6 | HP: 45/45 | AC 22* T 15* FF 20* | CMB: +6, CMD: 18 | F +5, R +5, W +5 | Init: +2 | Perc: +7 (darkvision), SM: +5 | Shield ON | Speed 30/20 | mwk longsword +9* (1d8+4*/19-20), silver light mace +6 (1d6+2), whip +6 (1d3+2 nonlethal), light crossbow +6 (1d8/19-20) | Spells: 3rd 2/4, 2nd 6/6, 1st 4/7| *Active: Divine Favor, Shield of Faith

Barkot will buy two more flasks of alchemist's fire, and that's almost all he has left after the costs for scribing the scrolls and the Pathfinder Chronicle. I'm ready to roll once we decide on who is carrying which shard - if Barkot is going to take the Shard of Pride, I'll need to update his statblock.

@GM - That makes sense to me. Skill retraining allows you to retrain 2 ranks at a time, so Barkot should be able to move a rank in Linguistics as a round-trip, or move a rank from Linguistics into a new skill and a rank from something else (maybe Knowledge (History)) into Linguistics to get that new language. But either way, it would cost him ~250gp he doesn't have, so any retraining will have to wait until our next chance at downtime.

Deric would obviously love to carry The Shard of Greed. Agree with Barkot that Squint and Pae would also benefit greatly from it. We could hand it off based on circumstance. Thoughts?

GM, considering that we didn’t know Reillana was leaving when we leveled up, would you allow Barkot to reallocate the rank he added to Heal to Knowledge (arcana) instead? He hasn’t used Heal since we leveled up, so it wouldn’t change any past rolls.

Barkot has hit heavy encumbrance so I’m going to have to mess with his gear. But if we’re leaving the city we’ll want extra rations and other items, so I’m starting to think it might be time for me to bring back the Nag of Holding. Any thoughts?

Shattered Star Maps

@Barkot I was just looking at the Runeguard class -- since that is something you have expressed interest in. You may not want to rely on the shard for your access to Thassilonian, as if you ever lost it or handed it off to someone else, you would no longer qualify for the Runeguard prestige class.

Would that mean that you lose access to the class features?

I think this is Barkot's final shopping list before leaving Magnimar (in addition to what he has already purchased):

donkey
pack saddle
trail rations x20
animal feed x10 (donkeys can also forage for food depending on terrain)
cold iron crossbow bolts x50
(sold: 1 tanglefoot bag)

Anybody have any gear they want to load onto the Nag of Holding?

Squint, I’m enjoying the hell out of this scene.

Yeah. Never been on a player side trip like this. Love it.

Ah, yes, I shouldn't have glossed over that.

Sheila would have informed the party that Reillana got recalled to the Mardant Spire to deal with urgent issues that she would not elaborate on.

@Barkot, Unrelated to the current events, give me an Arcana check.

Done, in Gameplay. It is not an auspicious first arcana check - Barkot’s knowledge of the arcane needs work.
