In his early years, Paëral was happy there...but as he got older and it was discovered he had an ability to see well and maneuver in pitch dark, he and his mother became persona non grata as the other Elves suspected him of having Drow ancestry. He found himself the object of ridicule to begin with but it eventually turned to being shunned completely, even by those whom they had once considered friends. They had no choice but to leave...
They left Kyonin and lived primarily in the woods around the River Kingdoms where Paëral learned to live solely off the forest. He became proficient at fishing and using a bow; he worshipped Erastil...
One day, his mother fell ill and Paëral was advised to get her to a physician in Xer, just inside the Razmiran border. They traveled on a large raft with several others heading that way, but were waylaid by a faith barge just inside Razmiran waters. A scuffle broke out from one of the passengers on the raft and a trigger-happy Razmiri enforcer shot at him, missing...but the bolt struck his mother in the chest, instantly killing her. Paëral has hated the Razmiri ever since...
Now on his own, Paëral truly knew what it meant to be one of the Forlorn...he traveled all around Avistan, including the cold north of the Kellid tribes where he picked up Hallit, and even venturing to the outskirts of Worldwound. All the while he never counted on anyone other than himself; whenever he entered a new land, he'd learn whatever he could about the locale. Upon his eventual return to the forests around the River Kingdoms, he traveled through the outskirts of Razmiran. He came across a small dock where a single traveler, a bard by chance, was being accosted by a Razmiri enforcer...drawing his bow, he took careful aim and shot the enforcer through the throat, the first humanoid he'd ever killed. The bard, a Pathfinder by chance, thanked Paëral and encouraged the young Elf to travel back to the Woodsedge Lodge in Galt to compensate him for the rescue. Intrigued by the bard and his stories on the way, Paëral slowly learned to somewhat trust the man, and he joined the Pathfinders thinking it would give him a purpose in life...
After performing primarily menial duties for the Lodge while learning their ways, Paëral was seen as an ideal candidate to send to Magnimar to learn more about Varisia by experiencing the frontier firsthand. He was told he should present himself to the Venture-Captain at the lodge in Magnimar and be at her disposal...
