Fash receives a reply to his Sending spell. "I have heard of Princess Rhaiani, who disappeared mysteriously years ago. But her failure to recognize your word of friendship concerns me. Use caution, farewell." Not much help, unfortunately. Though it would seem the story itself is based in truth, at the least.

The adventurers relate their recent adventures, and Glorb listens raptly. He looks over the battle plans they found and nods as he studies them. "Yeah... these could be important. Maybe. Sure seems like weird things are happening around here. Riggby's body desecrated, all those missing caravans - and now you find all those stolen boxes and crates piled up in storerooms under the ruins of Castle Greyhawk? And for a supposedly long-abandoned dungeon it sure seems awful busy down there - especially with the followers of Iuz himself! What do you think is going on exactly? An invasion or something?" He gestures at the maps. "Unless there's some kind of massive magical portal down there, I don't see how they get enough soldiers from the demon cambion's empire all the way down here in the numbers they'd need to get through Greyhawk's defenses. Still... I've got some contacts in the palace. I can bring them these plans if you'd like and see they get to the right people. Whether they'll take 'em seriously..." The gnome shrugs uncertainly, then suddenly changes tack as his eyes gleam with excitement. "Hey! Guess who I met the other night! Mordenkeinen himself! I was doing my performance at the Golden Griffon in the High Quarter when he approached me after the show! He was disguised of course, as a nobleman with a really ugly bodyguard, but he took me to a room where he said he wanted to discuss a private performance at his estate and revealed himself to me. And the bodyguard? It was a beholder! Kinda snarky and ill-tempered, but at least he didn't turn me into ash or anything! Anyway, guess you met them in the Wizard's Guild last week, huh? Said you were looking into restoring his old friend Robilar to our world again, and this... Billaro? Or Captain Gallanz? Is some kind of doppleganger that replaced him? So strange! Oh, well anyway, he said he's got a lead on someone who might help you on your way. Said she'll be in touch soon."

For Glorb's benefit, as well as Fash and Sobok, the party speaks of their meeting with the archmage that occurred several days ago in the Wizard's Guild (OOC - see below), after they'd been hired by the local Thieves' Guild to break into the well-guarded place to obtain a strange little artifact for a client. Afterward, the talkative gnome continues to chatter throughout breakfast, answering any questions they might have, and toward the end he seems to be strongly considering hanging up his lute for a time and rejoining you in your exploration of the ruins of Castle Greyhawk.

Mordenkainen's Story:
“Twenty-seven years ago, Riggby, Lord Robilar and I released Iuz from a magical prison in the dungeons below Castle Greyhawk. In our hubris, we had thought to slay the imprisoned god once and for all, so that he could never harm the Flanaess again – but we failed. The Old One walks Oerth once again, and now no one is safe. The years since then have not treated us well. Even now, Riggby’s corpse lies at the temple of Boccob. And Robilar is… changed.

“As you know, a few years ago, at the close of the Greyhawk Wars, my old friend Rary betrayed me and the other wizards of the Circle of Eight. When the smoke cleared, Otiluke and Tenser lay dead, and my old apprentice Bigby clung to life by the barest of threads. Rary’s betrayal was unexpected, though not entirely out of character. He always fancied himself a master chess player, so in retrospect, it was not surprising that he might seek to upset the board simply to create a more intriguing game for himself.” Setting the key down, his eyes seek the eyes of the adventurers, and even the wise-cracking orb floats silently during the narrative.

“The Circle had been struck before – indeed its members had even been killed before. To prevent catastrophe, each of us had prepared special components required for a powerful ritual spell, one that takes many months of preparation to accomplish. By using bits of our flesh and hair, perfect replicas could be created so that, should disaster strike, a new version of ourselves would awaken should the original meet an untimely death. It is immortality, of a sort. But Tenser and Otiluke never had a chance, because their strongholds had been raided and their clones destroyed – by none other than Lord Robilar, my oldest friend and companion. Robilar threw in with Rary for reasons I have never been able to comprehend, and his betrayal has galled me and my associates since that dreadful event. Rary’s defection made a certain kind of sense in hindsight, but Robilar’s did not. At least… until now.” Modenkainen gestures at the stacks of books and papers spread about the desk. Many are hand-written notes scribbled on parchment, others appear to be journals or the like. The writing appears to be the same, nearly illegible – written by a hasty hand, as though the body could not keep up with the thoughts of the mind that spewed forth like a geyser.

“Whether out of sheer luck, or perhaps in a fit of nostalgia, my investigation has led me back to Greyhawk – where Robilar was driven out of his estates and his vestment in the Green Dragon Inn. It has taken me months to locate Zagig’s private study, and it is in these journals that I have learned the truth of Robilar’s betrayal. Or rather, the one that calls himself Robilar – and of late Captain Gallanz. According to Zagig’s notes, centuries ago – at the height of his storied adventuring career – Zagig and his companions discovered a powerful artifact. A spehere called the Orb of Opposition, which acted as a key to access one of Oerth’s parallel worlds – an alternate reality that mirrors our own. This world is named Uerth, a place similar to our own but where magic is much weaker and the sciences more powerful – quite nearly the opposite of Oerth, thus giving the orb its name. Zagig wrote that dopplegangers of himself and his companions arrived in this world when they visited Uerth – swapping places at the exact instant the Orb of Opposition was touched. Eventually, Zagig and his companions set things right, returning these duplicates back to their original world when they were able to return to Oerth through other means. Zagig laid the orb to rest in the dungeons beneath Castle Greyhawk so that the denizens of Uerth could never access our own world.

“It is my belief that Robilar, who was often wont to explore the vast catacombs beneath Castle Greyhawk on his own from time to time, happened upon the Orb of Opposition in his travels and swapped places with his own double. His opposite. A thoroughly evil man I’ve dubbed Bilarro. But my discovery has come too late for me to act directly, as my divinations indicate that Bilarro has recently entered the dungeons beneath Castle Greyhawk for reasons I cannot discern. Following him is impossible, for I am bound by an oath I swore to Zagig that I would never again set foot in Castle Greyhawk. I would simply wait for him to emerge again, but I have also learned that the Old One is moving forward with an evil plan that I must now investigate before it is too late to stop his machinations.” At this point, Mordenkeinen again picks up the obsidian key, but proffers it to your group, his expression intense.

“You, however, are headed there now. You need this key to get in, and I will give it to you freely, on one condition. Find the Orb of Opposition. According to Zagig’s notes, bare flesh invokes the power of the Orb of Opposition, so if you don gloves or gauntlets you will be protected from its magic. As to where it or Billaro might be located, I cannot help you with that. You will have to rely on your own skills and intuition once you’ve entered the dungeons beneath Castle Greyhawk. As to the Orb’s appearance, it is described in the journal as an opaque blue sphere some ten inches or so in diameter. Further, it is written that ‘within its depths can be glimpsed faint lights, like distant stars shining against the firmament of the night sky.’ Zagig did often have a way with words. Touch the Orb to Bilarro’s skin and return my friend to Oerth. Agree to this quest and the key is yours, along with my good will. What say you?”

Glorb elects to join the party and meets the party early the following morning, outfitted for adventuring rather than entertaining the masses as he'd been doing the past few weeks. The walk to the ruins is pleasant enough, with a light spring rain that is refreshing rather than miserable. The journey into the tower itself however is tedious and tense, especially compared to their quick escape from the place. But in the end, they are able to return to the forge area without difficulty. As they approach the cavern where Princess Rhaiani was being held, they speak one more time about their plan...

*This ring is crazy overpowered for the price - it's basically like a Ring of Greater Invisibility, albeit limited to Darkvision - as written. I agree with you about the Ring of Darkhidden. The base spell from the MIC is invisbility; it is not a ring of Greater Invisibility.

If I have 3365 gp around, I will also purchase the Gloves of the Starry Sky (1100 gp, MIC, p 203), leaving me with 2265 gp (which is available to the party fun).

@Party, Ok, WRT to the holy water vials and the Tanglefoot bag, although I hope you will help me carry them, they are the ammunition for use with the scroll of TK to kick it off vs 'Rhaiani' (the scroll will hurl 9 items, all for touch attacks...).
@WRT to the Dim Door Scrolls, should Morrow have one - he is likely to be in the thick of any fighting and thus difficult to get to and rescue... (and if he is carrying one, it should either be the one Fash has or the one Reonnyn has - we both need to make UMD checks to use them).
Finally, the party fund needs 12125 for all the things GMWest listed as purchased. We could save a 3000 gp by making the wand of CMW in 2 wands of CLW (making the total 9125 gp). I can kick in 2265 gp. Who else is kicking in (and how much)?

Morrow can't cast Dimension Door until he reaches 12th level. And he does not have any ranks in UMD.

How about wands of lesser vigor? 1 round per point healed, 11 points for 1 charge.

How much gold is needed? Morrow has up to 3K that he could add to the cause. ??

Yeah, but you can use a scroll of Dim Door without a problem.

Dim Door is on your list (which is Arcane spells).

You have the int for a 5th level spell and Dim door is 4th.
The scroll's caster level is 7 because a wizard can cast Dim Door at CL 7; Your caster level is 10...

If Lesser vigor is available, it would make a fine alternative to the wands of CLW.

Everything purchased was covered by Verdan, with both his share of the treasure and his personal funds - which were considerable. If folks want to kick in for healing wands, just let me know as I've specified how much you have left from the split, not including what you have in your own inventory of coin wealth. Besides the CMW wand (fully charged) carried by Verdan now, he also has a nearly empty Wand of Lesser Vigor (9 charges), a partially charged CLW wand (34 charges) and another CLW wand that is also fully charged.

Verdan is still short on his spells list prepared for the day. 4th level he should have 3 plus domain. Please add Divine Power. 5th level he should have 2 plus domain. Please add True Seeing.

As the group approaches they pause for any prep spells, then Verdan casts True Seeing on himself. He allows Morrow (and ????) to lead but is immediately behind so he can warn if the spell reveals that the demon is the true shape.

Not sure what other (long duration) spells we normally cast. Morrow will cast Keen Edge.

Checked past posting. Looks like Verdan casts Aura of Warding, Light, and Iron Silence. And somebody casts Message?

Reonnyn follows along to the rear of the party. "Glorb, I want you to stay invisible for the fight, as Princess Rhaiani does not know of your existence." The gnome nods silently and with a whispered note vanishes from sight.

Glorb will cast Invisibility for starters. Reonnyn will take position at the front of the party with Morrow for now.

Ok, we go down in the usual set up, with Fash taking point, looking for trouble. Once we get to where the yellow arrow puts us on the map, he will pause for the group to catch up, and cast several spells:

Fash sneaks forward and doesn't seem to raise any alarms, though he is forced to move a short way into the cavern in order to see her. Rhaiani seems unaware of the gnome's presence and unchanged from the last time. In fact, she appears to be dozing.

The whisper gnome slips away and tells the rest of the party, and Verdan nods. "Let's go, then. When I see her, you will know the truth of what I see. Fash, I will let you take the lead in dealing with her. If she is not truly an elven princess, I will be ready to use my weapons or magic as needed."

Sounds good? You'll need to advance about halfway into the cavern, past the stalagmites and columns to get to a position where you can see her. I've marked the position on the map. Assuming you're all okay with this, I'll put up a post that starts the confrontation in a few days.

The party moves forward, with Fash, Reonnyn and Morrow in the front, Verdan and Sobok a step behind and Glorb trailing behind the others, no longer visible thanks to his spell. Rhaiani turns as the adventurers approach openly (most of them, anyway) and her demonic face lights up in a smile (that is none the less unnerving) and exclaims in delight. "You're back! I thought you would leave me here... Do you have the scrolls you need to free me?" She asks hopefully.

Verdan's thoughts ring into the minds of Fash, Morrow and Glorb. She is as she appears. Demon, at least part succubus, I should think. Beware her kiss, for it will drain your life. Their kind is also resistant to spells in general, as well as fire, ice and probably a few other types of elemental magic in addition. Unless of course this curse she suffers from is beyond my ability to see. I doubt this, however. The others, not linked telepathically, hear nothing - but they wait for Fash to take the lead as planned.

"Liars!" She hisses in anger, suddenly flying up toward the ceiling, her red eyes blazing with hatred!

Sorry for the delay, I had to think about this one for a bit. Fash, your Bluff roll was REALLY good, and would have been more than enough for the purposes you intended. Except... Rhaiani has a pretty decent Spellcraft check, and the DC to identify this spell being cast was 20. That said, she was so eager and your Bluff check was so good that you bought yourself a couple rounds before she noticed the deception simply because she identified the spell actually being cast. So, I ruled that since that exchange was a sort of surprise round between the two of you (on your 3rd attempt) she took an action in that surprise round (a move action, flying toward the ceiling) just as you failed on your 3rd attempt at casting the scroll. I've now got everyone's initiative sorted for Round 1. Fash, THIS is the round where you do actually succeed at the casting, but Rhaini is about 30' up at the ceiling AND she will act before you do. Feel free to take the successful casting as you'd intended, or if you want to give up on this plan of action and do something else instead, please feel free to do so! And of course if you'd rather wait to see what Rhaiani does first, you can bide a bit until she takes her action. Verdan can do the same, as he acts after her as well.

Reonnyn calls out in scorn as he unleashes an eldritch blast at the fiend, managing to catch her with the bolt of dark energy (17 damage) and penetrating her spell resistance as well! Morrow hurls three rays of scorching fire at the creature, and though two succeed in getting through her magic defense, the fire doesn't seem to affect her much (6 damage total, Fire Resistance is 10) Sobok breathes fire at her, and though it blasts through her spell resistance, again her demonic heritage makes her somewhat - though not totally - immune to to the intense heat (5 damage). Still unseen, or so he hopes, Glorb waits and watches to counter any spell she might cast that relies on sonic damage as he readies one of his wands.

Rhaiani sneers at the halfling's remonstration. "Do you think I care for the feelings of worms such as yourselves? It was one of your surface-dwelling scum that trapped me here more than a century ago! Still, you aren't as stupid as I'd thought. A pity..." Verdan casts a spell that summons a glowing mace that appears next to the demon, and it swings toward her head! The blow connects, but the target is a false image and all six of the remaining images cackle nastily even as the weapon swings again, though the target ducks under the blow (even as all of the images duck as well.)

Reonnyn continues to taunt the enraged succubus, sending another blast of eldritch energy toward the images, striking one and seeming to dissipate upon impact (Fails to break SR). Rhaiani cackles nastily as it does so. "You think so, little man? He sought to harness my power for his own selfish gains! But I turned the tables on him. So easily corruptible..." Morrow sends three scorching rays at her, two of the images vanish as they are struck, but the third misses as a magical shield flares around the real Rhaini and again she laughs mockingly.

Sobok readies an attack with his weapon, should she come near - and while his fiery breath weapon regenerates - while Glorb begins to hum a rousing tune to inspire his comrades!

Rhaiani raises her arms as though in supplication and cries out, "Fraz-Urb'luu! I beseech you to hear the prayer of your faithful servant Kalystys and strike down our enemies!" A mere moment later, a cold, cloying miasma of greasy darkness spreads out from a point directly in front of Morrow, encompassing the entire group!

1) She's using her wings - which is a fair point, figure she's kinda swooping around up there, staying about 30' up. For simplicity's sake, I'll leave her icon in place, so effectively she's winding up in the same square after swooping around during her 'action' - since she can't really hover in place.

2) It's a spell-like ability - so I don't think it follows the divine/arcane rules like a 'regular' spell does.

I've got Verdan's and Reonnyn's actions. Just need actions for Fash, Morrow, Sobok and Glorb to post up the next round!

I will try and pick up a magical composite bow at some point. With my dex I could probably hit something now and again. But I generally figured that my Breath Weapon would suffice most of the time. Fighting flying outsiders resistant to fire was not the thing I was planning for.

We actually had a Magical Composite 'Frost' Longbow +1 (+2 STR) - that was sold for 4150gp. I am not sure if you saw that before Sobok, but that would really come in handy now!

Nope, I saw the Glaive and thought it would be a nifty replacement to my normal Glaive and skipped over the bow. Hindsight is awesome, ain't it.
