It is time to regroup... He thinks to himself as he prepares to depart the area. At least I will find out how perceptive these demons truly are! Uttering a silent prayer to whichever God will protect fools, he summons his powers again...
...popping into existence at the bottom of the pyramid! He wastes no time moving as quickly as he dared to the inviting stairway...
Standard Action: Use Flee the Scene.

Ouch! Hopefully Reonnyn can outrun them...

"True. But we've time. Verdan can use the lesser vigor wands while we move. I still feel like that caster took part of me with that spell. Not physical damage, but I just don't feel right."
Nebuzaradan
"Yes, we need to keep moving as we know not the condition of Reonnyn and Fash." Neb says obviously out of sorts that he teleported so far from them.

Fash slips away easily but as Reonnyn teleports down to the base of the pyramid as he tries to follow suit, luck is not with the halfling as he lands on a rock, stumbling forward but managing to catch his balance before he falls on his face. Unfortunately for the warlock, the noise and raised dust alerts the two demons, who immediately swivel their heads and raise their bows, aiming at the unseen foe that they know is right there somewhere, even if they can't pinpoint exactly where. Arrows fly toward the halfling, who tries his best to dodge them as he makes a run for the stairwell...

The warlock is pierced by three arrows (44 damage), causing him to stumble again as he makes his run for freedom, but he stays on his feet and races up the steps, right on the heels of Fash - though he cannot see the gnome himself and indeed Fash has no idea the halfling is right behind him!
Damn, bad time for a cruddy roll. OK, so after reading the rules on Invisibility, they had to beat the DC by 20 on a Listen/Spot check to pinpoint the square you're in, which is good news as they were a bit shy on that. Still, they know where you're 'more or less at' and each can shoot 8 arrows, so I'm allowing each to shoot two arrows into each square of a 10' radius in your immediate area. I rolled the concealment first to see which arrows that 'hit' your square had even a chance to hit you and only one missed. Hope that ruling seems fair, it could have gone worse I suppose, but not by much. That said, I've moved you 60' to your current position on the map. I need each of you to give me your actions for Round 6 and, presuming you're headed up the stairwell, each of you give me one more Hide check!

Verdan uses his wand to heal the others as they move, but he can only squeeze the duskblade's shoulder in response to Morrow's words. "I'll pray for the divine magic needed to help you recover in the morning, worry not, my friend. For now, let us see to our wayward companions as you say."
Verdan used 6 charges from the Wand of Lesser Vigor. Stay tuned, you're still en route as we determine how Fash and Reonnyn fare.

Keep moving up the stairs until he can find a hiding spot then he will break out one of his healing wands.

Wand of CLW, 7 charges: 7d8 + 7 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 2, 7, 4, 5) + 7 = 42
Hopefully Reonnyn can find a good spot to hide! And yes, that could have gone much WORSE!
Fash Daergal
Fash hears Reonnyn stumble, and then the thunks of arrows hitting flesh...
He thinks to himself "That doesn't sound good. Why did I get stuck with the only halfling on Oerth who can't hide properly? Shit, he's leading them right to me!". As he message'd last round, he suits deed to word and makes like the wind, hustling up the stairs, swift and silent. When Haste runs out, he casts Expeditious Retreat and continues running.
Double moves until he gets out of the staircase, sneaking at 1/2 speed. With haste that's a total of 60' , maybe cut in half again for bad terrain (going up stairs).

Neither demon is able to pinpoint the location of either Reoynnyn or Fash, given the distance involved and their natural and/or magically enhanced stealth and soon enough they make their way up the spiral staircase leading into the great hall far above. Exhausted from their wounds and the terror of nearly being killed by the wicked arrows of those demons - not to mention the enraged cleric - they take a short breather and quickly locate one another as the halfling uses his wand to cure his wounds. A short time later, the rest of the party finds their companions and Verdan tends to Fash's wounds with his own wand.
Moving away once more to find a place to take counsel with one another, the adventurers speak on their options as Verdan eyes Morrow with obvious concern...
Thought I was gonna have a TPK there! Nice job of wisely retreating. The danger appears to be past - for the moment anyway - so what are your plans?

Reonnyn
Reonnyn looks over Morrow's wounds closely, while he was no priest he could easily recognize the wounds considering the source...
"Those wounds were made by Eldritch Fire, though far more potent than the one i wield," Reonnyn shudders, "That priestess is a formidable foe should she wield such power. I know not how to undo the effects sadly."
He reaches down to his pouch where his most valuable items are stored. "Perhaps returning to Greyhawk would be wise here. If We can return these plans we recovered from the General to Glorb, then he can make sense of them. Should the priestess lead the army she spoke of then Greyhawk itself would fall!"
Morrow, Tue
Morrow touches the wound where the dark energy had touched him. "It didn't feel like fire, rather like evil was reaching into my body and ripping away some of my life force. Normal healing isn't helping. It feels like there's just something missing that isn't being replaced. It was magic, but what was it?"
Any chance of a spellcraft check to recognize what it was? Not sure who saw the spell. This was the post when it happened. She wasn't invisible or anything when she cast it. ??
GM West
Verdan's Spellcraft check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15 vs DC?
Verdan nods as he answers Neb and Morrow. "I am... unsure of what spell she used, but I can see how it has affected you. This affliction ebbs your very life force, Morrow. Unless we use divine magic, this vile energy that courses through your body will become permanent and much more difficult to deal with. I will pray in the morning for the power to heal you, we dare wait no longer than that if we intend to heal you more easily."
I think all of you were in position to see what she cast, so the DC is a bit easier to beat than if you were trying to figure it out after the fact. Go ahead and give me Spellcraft rolls, if you'd like. But I figure Verdan is well acquainted with 'negative levels' in any case, so he knows how to cure you with a Restoration spell - before 24 hours have passed and they become a permanent level drain if you fail Fort saves for each negative level that afflicts you.
Morrow, Tue
Permanent level drain? Ouch! That takes Greater Restoration and lots of gold! Interesting that we've gotten to this high in levels and haven't dealt with this before. Lucky?
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29
Fash Daergal
Ok, the GM already mentioned Enervation in the original post, and a 20 should ID the spell, DC = 15+ spell level (4 in case of enervation). With that said, we don't actually have to worry about permanent level loss:
Assuming the subject survives, it regains lost levels after a number of hours equal to your caster level (maximum 15 hours). Usually, negative levels have a chance of permanently draining the victim’s levels, but the negative levels from enervation don’t last long enough to do so.
Fash comments: "It's a dark bit of necromancy indeed, but I have seen a man recover from such an insult to his soul during the wars. I expect Morrow will recover after a days rest."
He pauses and continues "I would certainly not dare that stairway again today. I am not sure if we would be better served by giving them some time to relax their guard, perhaps coming back in a week or more, or if we should try again tomorrow. They will be at high alert now, but you can only stay at high alert for so long... On the other hand, if we wait for them to relax again they may reinforce the guard, and we will be much delayed and they would spend the time furthering their wicked plans..."
Morrow, Tue
Morrow considers Fash's comment. "Sounds right, and I hope so. This feeling of being drained.... It is bad."
"If we need to rest, or at least I do, we can use the time to plan. The arrows that those demons fired were strong. How can we block them? Maybe a blast of air to make them miss? And do we know of any weakness that they have? All demons have resistances and immunities, but some have weaknesses as well. If we could target those they could be killed quicker. That cleric though.... We need to hit her hard and fast!"
Nebuzaradan
"If I take the time to memorize the bedroom. I could prepare three teleport spells and take us back to the surface or potentially back to town. I'm not sure if the magic shield around the tower is still present so it may be safer to just teleport to the entrance. We could then turn in the paperwork, refit, rest, and then teleport back to this point so we do not have to retrace our steps."
Reonnyn
"If we return to that place then we need to go after that foul priestess first" Reonnyn agrees, "One of the demons was badly injured so she will need to spend her energies healing it, I would think, so striking first may work in our favor. Neutralizing her spells would be important too!" Reonnyn paces the small room nervously, "I do not know how much time we have...I fear she may accelerate her plans now that we have assaulted their temple!"
Sobok.
"Their arrows were magical, so defending against them will be difficult." Sobok notes.
Fash Daergal
I much doubt that whatever plans are in motion are the priestesses. I think she and the demons were just the gate guards - there was a stairwell going down in the middle of the pyramid...and torches visible in it's depths.
At the base of the pyramid, a gaping hole can be seen - another stairwell, it would seem - and flickering torchlight is clearly visible from within its inky depths.
"However she might be a key piece to solving this problem. I wonder how much control she has over the demons? I have magics to twist a persons will to my service (Dominate Person) . If I can get one of those to stick - perhaps if I can sneak up on her while she is sleeping or resting - she might be able to point the demons at our foes, rather than have them fight us. I am sure that she would be able to tell us much of what we are getting into, down those stairs."
GM West
Yes, both Fash and Morrow recognized the spell of Enervation. As the player mentions those 'negative levels' aren't actually as bad as they normally are - though Verdan couldn't have known that. So simply waiting out the effects of the spell (i.e. a good night's rest) will see Morrow back to normal after some several hours.
Nebuzaradan
"Like most demons, those arrow demons are immune to electricity and poison, resistant to acid, cold and fire, and also resistant to magic. We need to plan for that. For our cleric, I could prepare a couple of touch of idiocy spells. As long as I can get a touch on her that should put her out of commission."
Reonnyn
"I don't like the idea of storming that temple," Reonnyn grimaces, "Could we perhaps lure them out of the pyramid in some way? I much rather try luring that priestess into one of those spore patches!"
Morrow, Tue
Morrow looks at Nebuzaradan when he mentions the Touch of Idiocy spell. "I hadn't thought of that spell. I was too focused on the arrow demons. I have that spell and can channel it through my sword attack. I just need to get close enough to her to attack. And I can cast it several times per day when I am rested."
"Can the demons see through invisibility? If you could cast an invisibility on me I could bypass the demons and disable the cleric. Haste would also be helpful...."
"Drawing them out is a good idea, but how? The demons' arrow attacks are best at range. We couldn't wait at range and taunt them into charging us...."
Nebuzaradan
"I'm not sure if they can see invisible. Since our friends got away I would think not. I was thinking Fash could use an illusion spell but the demons would just shoot at it. Then again, that may not be a bad idea. Any idea how many arrows they were carrying? At that rate of fire they should run out pretty quickly. I could do some lower level summoning spells to get them to fire off some shots as well. I have improved invisibility so I could open up with a volley of fireballs. If we returned to town I could get a copy of wind wall to block the horde of arrows." Neb says throwing out ideas.
Fash Daergal
Fash speaks in a rush :
"Several thoughts. First, I think we are agreed that we camp overnight, hoping that Morrow's soul replenishes itself. Second, we don't have enough information- as I mentioned, I believe all we have encountered is the gate guards. There is clearly much more to this den of evil, before I covered the center with fog, to minimize our risk of detection, I could clearly see another stairwell going down with torches lit below. That implies that we cannot expect to lure them out; they have a responsibility to guard the gate. I would be more concerned about them sending a message to the complex below to get reinforcements. Third, the only one of us who actually took one of those demons was Verdan - I believe he used Dismissal - similar magiks might be very useful. Fourth, I am confident the demons cannot see the invisible; otherwise Reonnyn and I would both be pincushions right not..."
Sobok.
"If they can be returned to their own plane, that would help even things up quickly. But with their resistance to magic, I am not sure we should plan on it working." Sobok says before continuing, "We could try a hit and run to see if they will follow us. But with range we will need to get out of line of sight as quickly as possible to prevent them from just standing there and shooting us."
Fash Daergal
"Ok, before we rest for the the night, as we are down here, could we go have a chat with the "imprisoned elven princess"? I should like to meet her and hear her story myself. I am a ruathar (elf-friend) and might be able to tell if she's not what she says she is..."
Before we rest and then leave, there is a little errand we could take care of. I'd like to speak to Rhaina and see how she responds to the Ruathar's Word of Friendship ability. Also, when we get back from talking to her, I have a 5th level slot that I could use up on a Sending spell, to the elf-mage Kelviernan, who would probably know about a kidnapped princess...
Reonnyn
"That's a good idea Fash" Reonnyn agrees, "We just cannot afford to linger too long."

The party backtracks to the elf maiden cursed to appear as a demon by her captor, according to her story. As they approach, Fash and Sobok get their first look at both her and the prison to which she is bound. Neb explains to the gnome and the half-orc that he identified the magic involved as a Hedged Prison Binding spell. Opening the door, the party hears the soft sound of dripping water echoing through this large, damp cavern. A forest of stalactites hangs from the high ceiling some thirty feet up, the display mirrored below by an equally impressive array of stalagmites measuring anywhere from three feet to ten feet or more. A few of the formations have in fact merged to form massive columns that meet delicately in the center. Swaths of color - deep purple in some spots and scintillating green in others - run along the rocky walls, and a thick mat of fungus and ropy mushrooms cover the floor. The glowing hues serve to illuminate most of the enormous cavern, save for some areas where the stalagmites and columns block line of sight.
It is around one of these formations that a Rhaiani appears as she did to the others a couple days ago, from the far end of the exotically beautiful cave. She is statuesque, well-muscled and standing more than six feet tall with ebony skin and long silver hair that matches the tattoos of spiraling runes that decorate her arms and legs. However, the cloven feet, bat-like wings, red eyes and dainty ivory horns growing from her brow give away her demonic heritage. "You have returned!" She breathes excitedly, hope reflected in her eyes. "Did you bring the scroll I need to break free of Erich's spell that binds me here? I beg you, please cast it without delay! He has not yet returned to bring me food, but I expect him any day!"
According to the dwarven wizard, the party could enter through the barrier, but those imprisoned - Rhaini in this instance - cannot exit across, finding it to be entirely impenetrable.

Rhaiani glances at Fash curiously, but doesn't otherwise respond to the phrase as you'd expect. It is clear she is quite fluent in Elvish, however as she speaks to you in that language - mostly in relation to rescuing her from her prison.
Morrow, Tue
Morrow watches the exchange, Sense motive?: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13 but doesn't see anything significant in the response.
Fash Daergal
Fash tries not to let on that a true child of Corellon Larethian should have recognized the word of friendship. He has polite words for her, but no more:
{also in elven}"No milady Rhaiani, it has been but a day, we have not even left this tower yet, so we have been able to fetch a scroll to free you. This visit is but a courtesy to let you know that we are now leaving, and hopefully will be able to return with your scroll soon. Keep up hope, for we will return."
Having said his piece, unless someone else wants to chat with the "princess", he is going to leave...
"Well, I do not think that she is actually one of Corellon Larethian's children. She did not seem to recognize the words of friendship that allow a Ruathar to identify himself to elvenfolk that he has not met before. So let us camp overnight and hope Morrow recovers fully. Then we can exit this place with our loot and plan what to do next. "
Assuming we do camp overnight before leaving the tower, before he rests, he will cast Sending to his friend, the elf-mage Kelviernan:
In Castle Greyhawk. Found supposed Elven princess Rhaiani, from city of Sonestri in the Celadon, kidnapped years ago. Suspect this is BS. You know anything?
Reonnyn
Reonnyn smiles encouragingly to the elvish 'princess', "Have faith here we shall return! I am curious though, has anyone else visited you since we saw you last?"
After the party has left the prison Reonnyn nods slowly, "I agree with you here Fash, but I cannot help but wonder at her true Identity. Mayhaps we can learn more back in Greyhawk. In any event I cannot help but feel she is tied to the Old One's forces, somehow."
Nebuzaradan
"She's a conniving thing is what she is," Nebuzaradan says after they have left the creature. "I suspect she was summoned and trapped for some purpose and then the mage who summoned her got himself killed. That, or she was put here as a trap for others."
Sobok.
"Perhaps a spell like True Seeing might be in order to see what she truly is." Sobok suggests. "Assuming whatever she is doing can be pierced with such magic."

Godsday [Tanabat], 11th day of Planting, 597 C.Y.
Weather outside is cool and clear
Current time is about 9:30 p.m.
-------------------------------------------------
Rhaini accepts the bad news with equanimity, though there is doubt in her eyes. "Please come back. I both fear and hope that Erich dies some day, but that would leave me here with nothing at all to eat or drink. Like an abandoned bird in a cage..." Those words coming from the mouth of a demonic-looking creature would give anyone pause to disbelieve her story, but still, the evidence seems to point that way. Doesn't it?
Turning their attentions to regrouping back in Greyhawk to discuss strategy and gather resources to do battle with the powerful cleric of Iuz and her bow-wielding demons, the party gathers the treasure, with Fashing using a spell to create a shadowy disc that will float behind them, Neb shrinking the massive chandelier down to the size of a coin as well as summoning invisible servants to carry their loot and of course the backs of those of the group that can bear the weight of their haul as well. The journey back to the City of Greyhawk takes the better part of an entire day, and by the time they make their way through the city gates, the crescent moon of Luna rides high in a night sky painted with a swath of glittering stars. As they approached the city, they could glimpse the pale blue glow of a crescent Celene hovering just over the distant trees of the Gnarley Forest to the west as it follows after the sun.
The guards at the gate finally let the adventurers through, after a good many questions as to their business and allowing them to go through their belongings - which were taxed in the usual manner, giving them a receipt for the transaction that cost them nearly 200 of their platinum coins! The party laments that they couldn't simply have teleported to Neb's place of residence and avoided the taxes entirely, but at least they are finally home (to some degree or another, depending on the individual) and able to take some much needed rest and good food and drink - the latter of which gains their entire attention after dropping off their loot and Neb's place.
As usual, the Green Dragon Inn is doing a good amount of business, though the party is able to find themselves a table with the help of the owner, Ricard Damaris. Though almost sixty years old (having fought at Emridy Meadows in his youth, a fact that some of the adventurers recall from their earlier chat with with the tall, gruffy handsome man), he looks no older than a fit fifty years, with thick black hair he wears down to his shoulders and a carefully groomed beard. "My friends, it has been too long since you're visited! Come, come, I'll find you a place to sit!" He kicks a couple of half-drunk men and their unconscious companion from a bench table and wipes it clean before presenting it to them. The trio makes their way toward the exit sullenly, the one barely coherent and being carried by his fellows as they leave. "Layabouts! If they want a room, they damn well need to pay for one! The tables are for eating, drinking and merriment only! Am I right? Of course I'm right! Here, sit, sit! Another half hour and I doubt even I could have found you all an empty seat!" He turns and bellows. "Lindara! Bring my friends food and drink! Quij's Plate for each I think, and ale! Tell Gulthen to pour generously or I'll bark his ear off!"
Grinning at his patrons, Ricard speaks on in a softer voice that still carries over the din of merrymakers that occupy the common room - at least three dozen or so. "I make good on my promise to those of you that rescued my blade - and me besides - and you drink for free! For your new companions, consider this first round is on the house - as well as your meals - in deference to their fine service. Now, if you'll excuse me I have my duties to attend to..." He starts to move away, energetic as a whirlwind, but then stops and snaps his fingers as he spins around. "Oh! Your little friend, the gnome bard... Glorb! He has news for you. He stops by every night during Wenta's boon for a couple of drinks before heading off to whatever venue he's entertaining at to see if you're returned. You missed him tonight, but I've no doubt he'll stop by tomorrow a bit after sunset." With that, he makes good on his earlier stated exit and moves away, talking animatedly with other customers in his usual jovial manner. A few moments later, your drinks arrive, and it's only a short five minutes before the platters of perfectly undercooked sausages and boiled potatoes arrive, the aroma is enough to cause mouths to water...
Treasure list is below, please let me know if I missed anything! Yeah, the taxes stink but it's also listed specifically in the adventure module and I probably let you off somewhat easy, given that 8,000 gem in Reonnyn's possesion! Also let me know if you're keeping anything that's not specifically 'claimed' in the list, or I'll presume you're selling the lot and I'll figure out how much you get for everything in the next post. Let me know your plans, including whether you want to meet with Glorb tomorrow night around 8:00 p.m. or so, and what sort of purchases you want to make.

Sobok.
"Finding buyers may take a while, but would keeping the tabards make sense? We may need them as a disguise against followers of Iuz." Sobok says as he tries some of the mead.
Morrow, Tue
"Good point. They could be far more useful than the value of gold for their sale. And the nobleman clothing with his symbol? If it'd fit over my chain shirt? But I think we should get rid of the royal clothing. It might be recognized and get us attacked by surprise as spies, such as we would be."
That bead of force could be useful! Could it trap the arrow demons? It says nothing can pass through it, but does that include teleportation?
Not really interested in any of the rest.
Reonnyn
Reonnyn grunts with irritation when he hears about just missing meeting Glorb here, "Blasted gnome...why couldn't he stick around longer..."
When the conversation turns to their loot he nods in agreement, "Those would prove useful disguises, agreed. That bead would be helpful as well."
Reonnyn wants to talk with Glorb as soon as possible, so waiting one day to meet him would be fine by him. Agreed with Morrow here, keep the Bead (and the gem, he he), along with the outfits; sell the rest. Those battle plans could prove priceless if we can get them to the proper authoritiess.
Nebuzaradan
"Fash or I should carry the scrolls. Extra spells never hurt to have on hand." Neb says. "Speaking of that, I'll need to purchase some additional spells once we get this stuff sold."
Sobok.
Keeping the Bead of Force could be worth while, but things can teleport out of it. Or into it for that matter. And destroy it with a Disintegration Spell.
"The magical Glaive would be useful for me as my current glaive lacks any enchantments. But we can sell it if needed. I do think that anyone who wants items like the Bead or scrolls should keep them. After what happened with the last group Fash and I traveled with, I am all for being as prepared as possible." Sobok says.

Waterday, 12th day of Planting (i.e. April), 597 C.Y.
Weather outside is cool and clear
Current time is about 7:30 p.m.
-------------------------------------------------
In the morning, over a leisurely breakfast, Ricard is happy to provide the party with a list of merchants that will likely be interested in purchasing the items they recovered. He grins as he leans back, pondering the list as he strokes his moustache. "Ahhh... you know, back in my day my comrades and I would return to some bustling city after spending weeks cleaning out an evil underground temple filled with vile cultists and their summoned demons, or a terrible castle ruled by an army of the undead or a dank dungeon filled with monsters of every kind imaginable - always loaded down with magic and other goods beyond simple coins - and then spend more than twice as many days searching for those who would give us gold in return! Hells, sometimes months, for that matter..." He shakes his head ruefully, then stands and begins gathering up dishes and wooden cups. "But such days are in my past, and I am only too happy to share my knowledge of mercantile contacts with you so that you can get done in a single day what it took me and my friends many long hours to accomplish. I would normally require a finder's fee for such work, but to you, my friends, I will charge nothing. Hopefully you will catch your little friend tonight, eh? Don't forget, be back by Wenta's Boon and you will certainly find him here. And half off drinks for your friends, eh?" He winks, nodding at Fash and Sobok before heading back into the kitchen, expertly balancing the dishware in his hands - even given that one is maimed.
The day is a busy one, but quite lucrative! The merchants on Ricard's list prove to be very amenable to purchasing their loot - from the fine art items, to the gems and jewels and the magical and mundane weapons and armor. Even the magical spoon fetches a good price - should they desire to part with it! That evening, a bit before sunset sure enough, a familiar gnome moves through the door of the Green Dragon Inn, his bright eyes scanning the patrons until his gaze lands upon the party. He nearly overlooks them, then his head tilts slightly and a smile lights his face as he recognizes Morrow, Verdan, Reonnyn and even Neb sitting with the others that he doesn't know. Glorb signals to Ricard to bring a round of drinks as he hoists himself up onto the bench amid chattered welcomes going both ways. "My good friends, it feels as though it has been months, though certainly it can't have been more than a week or two at most! I have news for you, but it can bide a bit. Tell me, how have you been? What adventures have you shared together beneath the ruined towers of Zagyg?"
Updated treasure list below, including claims. Last chance to do so, or I'll figure it's been sold! Based on the list below, the total amount of loot sold comes to 32,190gp, split six ways is a share of 5,365gp each. Not a bad haul!

Reonnyn
Reonnyn smiles at the appearance of his good friend Glorb, and waves the gnome over. After introducing him to the other newcomers, Reonnyn proceeds to summarize the adventures underneath the Tower of Magic, calling attention to the imprisoned 'elven' maiden Rhaiani. "So far we believe she is an imprisoned demon of some kind, but any tales you have heard or any facts you know of her would be appreciated! Also we have news of a more dire nature, words for those who run the City."
Morrow, Tue
Morrow hears Reonnyn's comment about the demon. "I don't believe the story that fiend has given. I think it's just a demon that wants to be freed on the city. But, we need a way to prove it before we kill it! On the extremely unlikely chance that the story is true...."
