Struggling against his bonds once their captives have left, Zeux speaks in a hushed tone to his fellow prisoner.

"See! This is where your curiosity gets us! Sacrificed to Iuz...for all that's holy. Bigby would have scooped them up and splatted them against the wall...and so would have I if you had not distracted me with all that St. Cuthbert stuff! Say, you OK over there? You're not saying much...which normally I would call a blessing...Razel?? Razel?? Answer me man..."

Glorb draws his wand, but hesitates to use it as he doesn’t want to hit Verdan or Morrow with a blast of the burning goo. Morrow strikes at the undead gargoyle, bringing down the proverbial hammer down in the form of a greatsword that cleaves deeply [-24 HP] into the monster’s back! Reonnyn’s eldritch bolt also slams (-6 HP) into the zombie’s chest, staggering it back a step or two, and though Verdan’s mace doesn’t appear to do any damage by itself, the undead creature howls soundlessly as it is struck (-7 HP) by the weapon’s holy fire!

In the next moment, a trio of disgusting creatures hobble around the corner from the partially seen corridor on the far side of the bridge. Verdan recognizes them as dretches – a fairly weak type of demon that none the less can cast a couple of spells and is immune to electricity as well as resistant to many other forms of energy attacks. Two of them move toward the bridge as another casts a spell that envelops the party in a cloud of noxious fumes! In the meanwhile, the zombie gargoyle turns on Morrow and attacks the deadly duskblade, slamming its fists hard into his side, and likely leaving him with a few badly bruised ribs!

Verdan’s Knowledge (The Planes) Check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15 = Success!

Zeux and Razil:

The priests move toward the door as the evil dretches lumber through ahead of them. The two spellcasters see their chance for escape and make good on the work they've been slowly making on their bonds, freeing themselves now that they have nobody watching them!

OK, you two are free to take your actions beginning with the end of this round, in Round 4! Feel free to roll your initiative and I’ll add you both to the initiative count below in the next post. I'll have the map up soon, once the entire party knows the situation to some degree at least – again probably next round. But you are in a chamber whose floor is littered with debris, bound to skeletal statues that flank an unholy altar covered in black wax, blood and bones. Above the altar, affixed to the wall behind it, is a crude painting of a bleached white skull, its jaws agape as though in a silent scream.

The door through which the demons and the acolytes departed is roughly 45' away from you to the north and west. The head priest is standing at the threshold of the door, his back to you as he continues casting spells to bolster himself for combat. He is a formidable warrior, clad in plate armor and wielding a greatsword.

Party is up! Everyone needs to make a successful Fort save vs DC 13 or be nauseated (i.e. a single move action only, no standard actions!) Please roll your save first, then determine what your action will be when you make your post based on whether or not you passed the save. If you don’t roll the save, I can do it for you – though it may negate part or all of your posted action. Note that movement through the fog is at half speed, and squares beyond those adjacent to you are considered to have total concealment whereas adjacent squares have regular concealment (20% miss chance). Because of the cloud, nobody knows exactly where those dretches are, the map indicates their last known position, but two of them were headed toward the far side of the bridge.

He then begins weaving the complex words of magic that will send these Clerics to meet with their own God...

Morrow chokes on the stench but is able to keep his food down. Seeing the zombie gargoyle still functioning he swings the huge sword again trying to finish the beast. Full Attack but not Power Attack this time

Glorb coughs a bit, but the hardy gnome overcomes the stinking cloud as he shouts. "We must get clear!" A moment later, he casts another spell and disappears from view! Morrow's initial blow fells the zombie and then the party hears Glorb's voice again, his tone a bit strangled and frantic. "Those things are on the bridge!" Then the gnome falls silent...

Morrow's Miss Chance (01-20): 1d100 ⇒ 47 = Hit!
Glorb's Fort Save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Let's go ahead and do this, since Glorb's player hasn't posted yet and this could go badly for the three of you. I'm going to retro a bit and say that Glorb began singing on Round 1 (Inspire Courage, for +1 to attack/damage rolls and saves vs Charm/Fear) and then on Round 2 he cast Haste on the party. At the start of Round 3 he cast Invisibility on himself and apparently moved toward the bridge where he shouted his warning. Morrow, since you only needed one blow to take down the zombie gargoyle, you still have a move action remaining, if you wish to take it. Reonnyn, you can take another action if you'd like, since the gargoyle is dead. Again. Recall that you saw those dretches heading for the bridge, even though you can't see the span any longer, so whether the creatures are there blocking your escape from the cloud in that direction is unclear. All party members are still up (though Morrow has only a move action left) and are Inspired and Hasted! Zeux and Razil, I'm going to go ahead and count you as 'allies', even though you haven't yet met the party. So you benefit from Inspired anyway (though not Haste).

Zeux and Razil:

From your character's point of view, you can hear the party (specifically Glorb's stirring bardsong and his shouted warning) through a fissure in the wall just about 10' away to the right of the door on the far end of the chamber where the head priest is currently standing, his back to the two of you. As I mentioned, the room is in bad shape and the floor in front of that fissure (between you and the door) is buckled and cracked where a rift begins and extends through that fissure as it widens. The bad guys did have to use some amount of care moving across that buckled area (it's difficult terrain), but it seems solid enough.

Outside of your character's perspective, if you look on the Combat Map - Slide #2, do you see where that rift in the main room (over which the bridge spans) begins to narrow as it moves southwest and disappears into the wall (currently blacked out) to the south of the dretches? That dark area hides the room in which the two of you are in, and your position is roughly 25' south of that area where the rift enters the black, inside the chamber and against the far southern wall. That square in which the dretches are clustered is about 10' north of the door through which they exited the opposite end of the room (along with the acolytes) and the head priest is standing in the square just south of those dretches in a short hallway just beyond the door that leads into that other chamber you can see on the map (though your characters can't see it) where the broken statue stands against the west wall upon the dais.

One mistake in my last OOC post, Glorb's warning indicates the dretches ARE on the bridge, you just aren't exactly sure where they are, nor where Glorb is at the moment.

Feeling inspired and seeing the zombie fall Morrow grits his teeth and moves back. "If anyone can create a breeze to clear the stink that'd be nice. Otherwise back out! What weaknesses do these things possess?"

The adventurers retreat out of the cloud, Verdan coughing and retching as he tries to clear the unholy stench from his mouth and nostrils. Reonnyn readies himself to send an eldritch bolt at any dretch that dares show itself, but after a few tense moments he sees nothing emerge and still there is no sign of the missing Glorb.

Suddenly, they hear angry words coming from somewhere to the west, beyond the stinking cloud. “Where are they? Within the cloud? We must deal with the intruders quickly or the General will have our heads.”

Initiative Tie Breaker (Zeux 1-3, Reonnyn 4-6): 1d6 ⇒ 2

The head priest casts another spell and snarls. “Where are they? Within the cloud? We must deal with the intruders quickly or the General will have our heads.” His back is still to the pair of now-freed spellcasters, and it appears he is unaware of the threat behind him. But neither can the two see what is going on in the chamber beyond – though they presume the cleric is speaking to one of the younger acolytes. Are their rescuers still there?

**Just as a heads-up, the priest acts after Zeux but before Razel in the initiative order. I haven't put the priest nor the acolytes in the official initiative order yet, since the rest of the party is still mostly unaware of their presence - save that they heard the priest speak.

Raz stands practically snarling in anger at the backs of these evil priests. He casts the most powerful offensive spell he has left in his arsenal!

Before his stalwart friend can throw his lightning bolt, Zeux flicks his wrist in the direction of the foul priest and 5 neon green darts fly from his fingertips to strike the priest from behind.

Maximized Magic Missile, Force Specialization, Arcane Thesis - totals my CL=9, and 6 damage per dart for a total of 30hp damage

Morrow looks around, initially OK but then concerned about Glorb. Hearing the words from the demons he calls out, "We're right her ya stupid slugs. Waitin' to kill you in your stinking vapors. Come on spit yourself on my sword!" Quieter he calls out "Glorb. Over here. Come to me."

And if anyone could cast a gust of wind it's likely Glorb....

The adventurers on the far side of the choking cloud wait for the fiends to appear… and are soon rewarded as one of the demonic creatures comes lurching through the mist! Reonnyn sends a bolt of eldritch fire into the demon as it closes in on the party, though where the other creatures might lurk they cannot guess. The group also hears the unmistakable clap of a lightning bolt, sizzling bolts and a loud explosion coming from somewhere beyond the stinking cloud, as well as cries of pain and angry shouts. Is Glorb in trouble over there?

Reonnyn’s Miss Chance (01-20): 1d100 ⇒ 51 = Hit Confirmed!

Zeux and Razil:

Catching the head priest by surprise, Razil sends a flurry of magic missiles at the evil cleric. Crying out in pain and surprise, the priest spins to face Zeux and Razil, his face twisted with rage as he brings his greatsword to bear. “To me!” He calls out to the acolytes who apparently lurk nearby even as he strides forward across the broken ground, calling upon his dark magic to heal his own injuries somewhat, though much of that is undone when Zeux strikes with his lightning bolt and the evil cleric curses softly. In the next moment, the two other priests quickly move through the door, one of them casting another healing spell upon their leader while the other casts a spell that causes a glowing greatsword to appear in the air next to Razil, the spiritual weapon slashing at the spellcaster but missing by a wide mark.

But a moment later, the odds get a little better as a gnome clad in robes suddenly appears beyond the doorway, tossing a small bead that suddenly explodes in the midst of the clerics! The head priest snarls in anger and surprise once more as he spins, fixing the gnome with an evil glare.

Morrow slashes at the gross little demon, his sword cleaving the head from its shoulders in one swift motion as the duskblade steps forward into the noxious cloud, only to encounter another of the creatures! Again he swings, and though it ducks under the first blow, the second splits it nearly in half! Reonnyn dashes into the cloud as well and the halfling tries to slip past another of the squat, disgusting demons and though its claws miss him by several inches as he scoots past, the warlock finds the bridge is blocked by yet another of the creatures! Verdan continues to cough up most of his lunch as his eyes water uncontrollably, wondering if it’s actually his lung or maybe a spleen as the dretch attack, one lurching toward Morrow as the other attacks Reonnyn!

Morrow gags a bit on the cloying mist that feels thick in his mouth, but he manages to compose himself as he swings wildly, unable to find his foe as the dretch utilizes the concealment offered by the cloud to its advantage. Reonnyn of the iron stomach keeps his lunch down despite the horrific stench of the demon-created cloud, and the halfling attacks the dretch with several quick stabs of his rapier, unfortunately, the damage done seems quite minimal as the demonic creatures seem to be somewhat resistant to his thin blade. Verdan feels on the verge of harnessing his nausea, but is struck by a new wave that brings tears to his eyes as he retches uncontrollably. The little demons continue to attack Reonnyn and Morrow, and though the halfling easily evades his attacker, Morrow is struck by one of the demon’s claws – though his heightened reflexes allow him to escape more serious harm!

Zeux, Razil and Glorb:

Zeux easily throws off the evil cleric’s enchantment and Razel calls out to the gnome and casts a spell, his hand glowing with negative energy as he moves to engage the high priest of Iuz in mortal combat. His fingers brush the evil cleric’s arm and the servant of the Old One winces in pain as Cuthbert’s vengeance bites into his flesh like a blade. One of the acolytes heals his leader with a touch as the other draws his greatsword and slashes at Razel with the weapon, opening a deep wound in his side and the cleric grunts in pain, wishing that he had his armor protecting him. Glorb casts an enchantment to hopefully confuse the head priest, and though the evil cleric resists the spell successfully, he cannot avoid the blast of magic that spears forth from Zeux’s outstretched hand and the priest staggers back a step, his eyes almost glowing with hatred, anger and pain. Wielding his greatsword, he slashes once, then twice at Razil! The first blow carves a terrible slash along his shoulder, but then the cleric loses his balance and his second blow goes astray.

Morrow’s first blow slashes through the mist, but his follow-up blows cut the little demon into tiny pieces! Reonnyn steps away from the demon, and though he loses sight of the creature he has a good idea of where it’s at and lets loose an eldritch ray in the direction of the evil dretch – though he cannot see the result. He learns quickly though that the monster survived as it scampers toward him out of the mist, tearing and biting with its claws and teeth! Fortunately, the halfling is able to avoid the sharp talons and fangs of the demon.

The Iuzite scowls and slashes at Razel with the sword, opening a terrible wound in his side and thwarts Razel’s attempt to wrest the blade away! Party is up! Morrow and Reonnyn, I will again need new Fort saves from you both, as you are still in the cloud at the beginning of your actions. Verdan, you can act this round! Also, everyone keep in mind you can only see into adjacent squares in the mist, so Reonnyn you actually had a 50% miss chance since you are more than 1 square away from your enemy, but you easily made the roll with your 99 on the dice (and you knew which square he was in, obviously.)

Zeux sends a flurry of magic missiles at the evil priest, and the head cleric drops lifelessly to the floor beneath the onslaught. Undaunted, the acolytes perhaps see an opening in the upper echelon in the priesthood of Iuz and converge on the spellcaster, spreading out to try and flank him, though the movement of one of the clerics is hampered by the cracked ground near the rift. The nearer one slashes at the wizard with his greatsword, and though the blow isn’t terribly well-aimed, it is enough to open a nasty wound in the unarmored side of Zeux.

Combat Details:

Red Acolyte’s Greatsword Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 vs Zeux’ AC (unarmored) = Hit!

On the other side of the chamber, Morrow’s powerful blow separates the demon’s head from its mottled body, which falls to the ground oozing a black pustulence that must serve as blood for the creature. Reonnyn moves across the bridge, with Verdan on his heels, both of them winning free of the noxious cloud! Seeing Glorb safe and sound, the gnome gestures toward the south, where the sounds of combat can be heard clearly. The pair rush through the door, finding one heavily armored priest of Iuz down on the ground near another unarmored man. Another, who has the looks of a prisoner or the like, is squaring off against two more armored men wielding greatswords, who turn to snarl at the intruders. “Do not think to thwart the will of Iuz!” One of them shouts.

Party is up, starting with Glorb at the top of the round! Morrow, I will need just one more Fort save from you, as you couldn’t get out of the cloud on your turn. Verdan and Reonnyn, I double moved you into the room, with the cleric moving to engage the surviving acolytes. Again, note that movement across those squares with cracks in them is considered difficult terrain. I’ve gone ahead and rid us of the spoiler for the two combats, as you’ve finally merged together – except for Morrow, who will soon be on his way I’m sure! Note that Slide #3 Map is the one with the bad guys and everyone except for Morrow (still on Slide #2 Map)
