I'd agree with Fash that Bardic Knowledge wouldn't help here. Though it might have with the whole Princess Rhaiani thing...
Bardic Knowledge: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 7 + 2 = 11
Well, not so much...
In any case, Reonnyn, feel free to re-spend those skill points if you'd like Glorb to have more Knowledge skills than he currently has (which is nil, actually) especially as you level up to 10 and 11.
Morrow, Tue |
Neb was our knowledge guy.... That is where a wizard really shines!
Can a demon in the hedged binding summon other demons? If it could, wouldn't they be stuck in it as well?
As for the Magic Circle against Evil, it says you have to scribe a circle with silver dust. And if the circle is broken the spell ends. That seems to mean that the circle doesn't move? Not too useful if we need to get to the creature and kill it?

Magic circle has an area of effect:
Area: 10-ft.-radius emanation from touched creature
If it's an emanation, it moves with the touched creature. What you can't do with it is force it against a creature that stands it's ground - that breaks the spell.

Okay I will allocate these skill points when he levels up, I will keep his skills as they are for now.
PS. Should I level up Glorb now to level 10?
GM West |

Good question! I'd say no, as the spell mentions that those trapped "cannot be sent back to its home plane due to dismissal, banishment, or a similar effect." It's a bit of a leap to figure that it'd go both ways, but yeah I could see IF it were a demon trapped it could summon umpteen billion other demons to share its fate. That might empty the Abyss out fast! :)

Yes, you can level Glorb to 10 now. Have Level 11 handy for the near future - if you all survive!

Although... now that I think about it, it's ONLY the 'trapped' demon that can't be schlepped back to its home plane. So a summoned demon could pop in and say 'yeah, sucks to be you' and then leave. I suppose that actually makes sense, considering the description of the spell doesn't preclude the idea of anything teleporting or being summoned into the prison. So yes, based on your research, it seems possible that a demon could summon another demon into the 'prison', which wouldn't have any hold on the demon summoned (as it was never the target of the binding spell itself.
Morrow, Tue |
Hmm.... Circular thinking here, but then if it is a demon, why wouldn't it summon as many demons at it could and get them to figure out how to release it? Or cause enough trouble until someone powerful enough came to investigate the source of all the summoned demons, and possibly release her?
That could mean that it isn't a demon? I'll be glad once the True Seeing answers the question.
Reonnyn |
OK here is Glorb level up changes
Glorb level up Changes
+1 Bard level
+1d6 ⇒ 2 HP
+1 BAB
+1 Bardic music use per day
Inspire Courage increase to +2
+1 3rd level spell known
+1 3rd level spell per day
Skills:
+1 Knowledge Arcana
+1 Knowledge Dungeoneering
+1 Knowledge History
+1 Knowledge Local
+1 Knowledge Nobility
+1 Knowledge Planes
+1 Performance (Song)
+1 Performance (Wind Instruments)
EDIT: Still deciding on what spell to pick here. Deciding between Deafening Blast, Dirge of Discord, Dissonant Chord, or Harmonic Chorus. Any suggestions are appreciated!
Morrow, Tue |
What does he already have?
Haste is always a great group boost!
Displacement looks pretty good against those archer demons that we faced! Only one person per casting though.... and 1 round/level duration.
Good Hope looks like your Inspire Courage in spell form. 1 minute/level duration would mean that you wouldn't need to use the bardic music constantly. Does the 3.5 rules have the Lingering Performance feat to extend bardic music effects?
Sobok. |
Haste and Slow are good spells. I had a high level Bard who took Heightened. It helps quite a bit if he needs a feat.
Reonnyn |
Glorb already has Haste on his spell list, leaning towards Good Hope here. If he goes with that spell then Glorb could purchase a couple of scrolls of Deafening Blast/Dissonant Chord for backup purposes.
GM West: Does Glorb look OK?
GM West |
Reonnyn, I've given Glorb a brief look and everything seems good. I'll go over the sheet a bit more as soon as I can, but for now everything seems just fine. Again though, you're free to convert some skill points to Knowledge and away from other skills, if you'd like to do so.
So plans are to confront Rhaiani upon returning to the dungeon, correct? Any other purchases being made that haven't already been mentioned? I've only got the following so far that I've seen:
Spell components for True Seeing (250 gp) - For Verdan
Scroll of Anti-Magic (1650 gp) - For Fash
Wand of Protection from Evil - For Verdan
And maybe other precautions? The ones above seem to be a certainty, based on your plan below. Also, Morrow is buffing his sword as follows:
Fiendslayer Crystal for my sword? MIC says 5,000 GP. Page 65.
Least: A weapon with this crystal attached deals an extra 1d6 points of damage to evil outsiders.
Lesser: As the least crystal, and the weapon is treated as good-aligned for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.
Greater: As the lesser crystal, and if the weapon scores a critical hit against an evil outsider, that creature can't use any teleportation abilities or spells for 1 round.
Any evil creature grasping a weapon that bears a fiendslayer crystal gains one negative level, which remains as long as it holds the weapon and disappears when the weapon is no longer wielded. This negative level never results in actual level loss, but it cannot be overcome in any way (including restoration spells) while the weapon is wielded.
As for approaching Rhaiani, when I make my next post that sees you back in the dungeon, do you want Neb to Teleport you, or are you going to hike your way down through? If the latter, there will be wandering monster checks - and/or maybe defenses have otherwise been put into place in your absence. In any case, once you reach your destination (whether swiftly or not) the plan seems to be:
1) Fash casts Telepathic Bond so that (Verdan, Fash, Morrow and Reonnyn) can communicate without words.
2) Verdan casts true seeing
3) Drop any other pre-fight buffs.
Then we walk up to her cavern and Verdan looks at her to see what she really is. He uses the telepathic bond to tell everyone in contact. At this point the plan splits. Either
A) She really is a transformed elf princess, at which point I whip out a scroll of Antimagic Field and start with the UMD checks. If at that point, she turns out to be a hostile elf. At that point, I keep close to her with the AM Field, and Morrow and Sobok beat on her...
B) She's something else. Given she's been lying to us, we can assume she's hostile. At that point, I dig out a scroll of something offensive, and pretend it's AM Field... When it goes off, everyone jumps her.
Sobok. |
Just remember that Good Hope and Inspire Courage do not stack in 3.5.
That seems like our plan. I think hiking makes more sense IC, but its probably better if we just teleport and save a bunch of resources from traps and wandering monsters.
Reonnyn |
OK good to know Sobok. I was thinking when Glorb runs out of Inspire Courage rounds.
GM West: Can Reonnyn upgrade his Amulet of Natural Armor from +1 to +2 (cost +6000gp)?
Morrow, Tue |
Sounds good. Teleport sounds like the quicker and possibly safer way. As long as we don't "miss"....
GM West |
Reonnyn, if you are looking to move quickly, you'll have to buy an Amulet +2 and trade in your +1. I'll of course also allow an upgrade, but it'd take a few days. So no problem at all if you want to wait three or four days for that.
Reonnyn |
Hmmm, OK Reonnyn will not trade it in for now. Is there an Amulet of Health +2 available? if so then Reonnyn will trade in his Amulet of Natural Armor for that.
Fash Daergal |
1) About re-entering the dungeon, teleport won't work unless Neb is coming along. At 10th level, it moves up to 3 people + him, and we have 6 people to move ( 3+M him in, him out, 3 more + him in, him out) is 4 teleports total, and I don't think he has 4 5th level slots per day...
Not to mention I hate it tactically; it's one thing to teleport out of trouble to someplace you think is safer. It's very much another to teleport into someplace that we cannot be sure it secured. Also, all those trips increase the odds of a mishap...
2) Fash needs to find scroll of telekinesis (1125 gp), 8 vials of holy water (200gp) and a tanglefoot bag (50 gp). Depending on what comes out of party shares, there are magic items he will look for if he has enough money left
Gloves of Dexterity +2 (4000 gp) or gloves of the starry sky (1100 gp, MIC, p 203) and/or Ring of the Darkhidden (2000gp, MIC, p122)
GM West |
Ah yes, I forgot he'd need to come with. Looks like you lot are hiking in!
As Greyhawk is a booming city of trade, those magic items are all available. Really pricey stuff (15k+ or so) might get dicey - though you could certainly obtain it, given time.
Reonnyn |
OK updating Reonnyn equipment here:
+ 1000gp - Sell Amulet of Natural Armor +1
- 4000gp - Purchase Amulet of Health +2
========
- 3000gp from his share. Updated Character sheet.
PS: I just realized we have a scroll of Wish from earlier. Placed it on Glorb's sheet for now.
Sobok. |
I will be on vaction over the holiday weekend. It sounds like my internet access will be pretty bad. Please bot as needed.
Fash Daergal |
Ok, Fash will spend his share (5365 gp) as follows
Scroll of Antimagic Field 1650 gp
Scroll of Telekinesis 1125 gp
8 Vials of Holy Water 200 gp
Tanglefoot Bag 50 gp
Ring of the Darkhidden 2000 gp
He has 340 gp left over spare. I would strongly suggest we start a party fund; there are things we will need to buy as a group, eg: Wands of CLW. I would suggest, as a party, we would also want 3 or so scrolls of Dimension Door (or other escape magic). It's on the Duskblade (and Bard) list, Reonnyn and I can UMD it. We've just has a demonstration about how important the ability to break contact is...
Reonnyn |
I think we are waiting to see what Rhaiani does here. I interpreted this as the surprise round where Fash, Reonnyn and Rhaiani acted here.
GM West |
Posted in the main thread, but Morrow, Sobok AND Glorb can also act before Rhaiani takes her action in this Round 1. Fash has changed his action for this round (per your post) instead of taking the successful UMD check to hurl all those projectiles, but we'll handle that after Rhaiani takes her action.
Basically, once I get actions from those three, I'll post up Round 1 (including Fash's revised action) and from then on we will go round by round with everyone posting their actions - since in effect the 'top' of the round will start with Fash after Rhaini takes her action. Hope that makes sense.
Sobok. |
I think we paused for the GM. I do not believe Sobok is supposed to go yet. Not that I have much to do with her 30 ft up anyway.
GM West |
So the order is currently
Reonnyn
Morrow
Sobok
Glorb
Rhaiani
Fash
Verdan
With Reonnyn and Morrow having posted their actions. I'm waiting for Sobok and Glorb, I do believe - unless I missed a post, which is entirely possible.
With my next post, I'll end on Rhaini's action, and the order will go:
Fash
Verdan
Reonnyn
Morrow
Glorb
Rhaiani
That will pause the action mid-round, but it'll be easier for me to collect everyone's action (and give all the players an advantage in knowing that their posted action won't be made moot by the enemy's action at least) before I make the next post.
Sobok. |
I missed I was up. I will see if I can do anything.
Fash Daergal |
Sounds like you all are retreating out of the cavern? I'll handwave that as successful, as she is unable to follow - just want to make sure that's the plan before posting...
I think that's the plan next round, but for this round, Morrow and Sobok readied, Reonnyn attacked and Fash cast a feeblemind. Glorbe is the only one who retreated; Verdan is up to you...
Sobok. |
It looks like it. We will need to go find some good bows. Whatever the monsters at the temple had might work wonders. Assuming it's not all just their abilities instead of the bow.
Fash Daergal |
Ok, COA decision time (yeah, I'm doing this hear, because it's easier to do it OOC).
Verdan needs to do some healing - everybody got hurt by the Unholy Blight, and Fash needs some extra... That hellfire blast was nasty.
Then we need to make a choice
1) Scout below without resting
2) Rest and take another crack at the succubus
3) Rest and scout below
If we choose to rest, we can do it in the secret bedroom that we used beforehand...
I'd like votes from all the players (Fash, Sobok, Morrow and Reonnyn).
Fash votes for 2
Reonnyn |
Reonnyn votes for 1) followed by 2), (Sorry Glorb lol)
Morrow, Tue |
My vote would be #1 if the scouting can be safe. But.... Since Morrow isn't a scout I think the actual scout(s) should decide whether or not they feel safe.
Then, rest. And decide whether we attack the demons below or the succubus and prep spells accordingly. I vote for the archer demons below....
Note: I don't think we should leave the succubus alive. But, I don't think it is critical to kill it now. Maybe do the demons below and see if we can use their bows? Also, are there protective spells that would help against the blight or the hellfire blast?
Fash Daergal |
Because this should probably be here, rather than the gameplay thread:
Hmm... Forgot what that did. I remember talking with you about it, but can't find the conversation. Can you give me the description again? Didn't see it on the character sheet. Invisible to darkvision, but how long does it last, any other caveats, etc.
I think I messed up and you're still hidden from view, but you can tell that you (and probably Reonnyn as well) have been heard. If that's the case, then for the moment they are still scanning the area and you can all ignore the combat and such.
The ring of the Darkhidden is in the Magic Item Compendium, p 122. I recall us having a small chat about what it did, but I can't find it either (although I believe it was PM's). The gist of said conversation is that as written, you thought it acted like improved invisibility vs darkvision, which seemed too punchy. You proposed that it would work like regular invisibility, which I was fine with...
Sobok. |
So a few comments on the Warlock abilities. Normally, Spell Like Abilities do not have V, S, or M components and according to the Warlock class Spell Like Abilities do not have Arcane Spell Failure, but the Warlock's specific abilities do have Somatic Components and Spell Failure.
In the Warlock section on armor it refers to Eldritch Blast using Somatic Components and having Spell Failure which is why they have specific armor training. Also, although it is far from official, an online source I find to be very reliable lists it as having V and S requirements to casting. Take that as you will. But in my brief search into the issue, I think you probably do need the Verbal component. Unfortunately, I can not show a specific line for that. It just seems from the comments about Somatic components and the online information suggest that it does. It definitely has the S component, beyond that I am not positive.
GM West |
Interesting! I'll have to pay attention to that - especially when circumstances warrant. Thanks, Sobok!
In this case, any verbal component of Flee The Scene is moot, as they teleported elsewhere once the ability was used. The verbal spellcasting I'm referencing in the adventure post is Fash casting Spider Climb. It's definitely going to give away his position, even if he's invisible to their darkvision. And it's pretty clear to both of the scouts that the mastiffs have the Scent ability - though what their range is, they can't be sure.
Reonnyn, I'm ruling that you are still Invisible, as your ability didn't affect any of your foes and thus wasn't an attack in any way.
Sobok. |
I actually think the Somatic component is really sad for Flee the Scene. It means you cannot cast it in a grapple to escape. That is a huge reason for having dimension door or teleport like powers. That is definitely something Reonnyn will need to consider.
Fash Daergal |
@GmWest, I am indeed rolling badly on stealth checks, but have you forgotten about the ring of the darkhidden again? I suspect at a minimum there is a miss chance on that shot...
GM West |
I'm getting old... yep, forgot about it again. I need to put that into my Combat Notes as a reminder to myself that you are, effectively, just as invisible as Reonnyn is. OK, I'll fix it tomorrow when I'm more awake. :)
GM West |
Confirmed Fash, it didn't see you and doesn't have a good idea of where you're at - though thanks to the mastiffs, it knows 'someone' is up there. I will refund your HP with my next post. Sorry about forgetting that again! Don't hesitate to remind me with your next action post. Obviously I need the reminder! :)
Morrow, Tue |
Old? Say that again in a decade or two! You might even have grand children by then. Mine are a lot of fun when I get to see them!
Morrow, Tue |
Looking at Myth-Weavers. You have spells used (actually spell slots) for third level as Three (of Three). I know I cast Keen Edge. But where did I burn the other two?
GM West |
Damn, yeah that's the OLD (emphasis on 'old' is purely coincidental, given our recent posts above...) character sheet. You probably can't see the new one - the link doesn't work for it. I need to figure out how to get a better one going here or somewhere else. You have all your slots available, minus what you cast for this battle.
Morrow, Tue |
Should be minus the 1 3rd level and 2 2nd level slots against the succubus.
GM West |
OK, I'm giving up on my old method of keeping character sheets. It's quite frankly turned out to be a big old pain in my ass! Go ahead and use your Paizo board profiles to track your character sheets in whatever format you'd like. You should also track your own spells (including those cast), as well as abilities used (when they're limited by x/day or x/week) and I'll trust your bookkeeping! :)
If you need my copy of your most current character sheet (if you haven't been tracking it here in your Paizo profile, for instance) just let me know and I'll post it here for you to cut/paste over and fix up however you'd like.
