The man turns over on his back with great difficulty. A huge gash on the side of his head is visibly bleeding. As he turns, he lets out a muffled Ohhhh! Greta and Kurag recognize the man as Rabus Clarenston, owner of The Killin' Ground. He weakly says, When we heard the alarm, we all started to gather our arms when that half-orc and them two Freedom Town thugs that were in here drinking began attacking us. I was hit on the side of my head with an ale mug. I played dead while they found the moonshine. They got so busy with their drinking they forgot about me. Then you all came in and saved us. He then looks around at the bodies of the other patrons. Saved me he says sadly.
Kurag Urlot III |
Thanks Greta. Hopefully we get some answers from them later.
As Rabus mentions Freedom Town Kurag racks his brain to try and remember what he knows of the place.
knowledge local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
It is another settlement but an unsavory one. Where Trunau holds itself to a strict code of laws Freedom Town is anything but. You can find all sorts of unsavory types there.
DM RichD |
Aye! That you can! The wounded man tries to spit but not having the strength, the spittle just dribbles down his chin. Bah! The man says as he wipes his mouth with his sleeve. I was wary of 'em when they said they were from Freedom Town. Looks like my suspicions were correct! Is anyone else still alive? Rabus asks hopefully as he sees you checking the bodies. Besides the two stable thugs, none of the other patrons are alive. As he unsteadily gains his footing, feeling a little better aftrer Greta's healing. He will say to the group. My thanks again. As long as I am owner of this establishment, you all can drink for free. He then moves unsteadily to behind the bar. Good! They are still here. I do want to give these to you now. It ain't much. Here are two vials of remove sickness and two vials of Soothe Syrup I had been saving these, but I think you all might get more benefit from them. He slides the four vials accross the bar to you.
Bormann Grimm |
Bormann frowns at the description of Freedom Town and doesn't like the implications. "They may just be criminals acting independently, but if acting on behalf of Freedom Town, this could be an act of war."
Kurag Urlot III |
Kursk gladly accepts one of the vials of remove sickness. Thank you my friend. Once this is over I will come back for your drink as well. You might have offered up too much though with the reputations dwarves and their capacity for drink.. Giving home an arm to lean on and dragging one of the unconscious men Kurag makes for the door. Come lets get you to the healers adn then we an get rid of this filth as well.
DM RichD |
Thank you my friend. Once this is over I will come back for your drink as well. You might have offered up too much though with the reputations dwarves and their capacity for drink..
I am not worried. If it wasn't for you all, I wouldn't have a tavern to serve them in! He gladly accepts Kurag's arm and says to Bormann, I don't think it was anything organized by Freedom Town itself. It sounded like these were just mercenaries that hired out to the stinkin' orcs!
When you arrive back at the barricade, you see that Sara is looking much better. She waves at you all and Agrit flashes you a toothy smile. As a healer rushes past she says, Just put them over there and we will take care of them when we have the time.
Where to next?
Kurag Urlot III |
After dropping the men at the the barricade Kurag gives a nod to Sara and Garith as he hurries inward to check out the homes on the way to the eastern lookout tower. Keep these men safe. Should we come back they might have information that we will need to obtain from them. This is no random attack. They knew when and where to hit us. We will return when this is over.
Bormann Grimm |
"Let's finish securing the quarter. We should check those homes near the the overlook and make sure the tower is clear of orcs. Last thing the defenders of Trunau need is some orc chief coordinating their assault from that useful a vantage point."

As you approach the first house, you see an orc passby an open window and you hear the sound of furniture breaking and glass shattering. There is also a crudly made cart outside the house piled high with orcan equipment, clothes, and bags.

Keeping quiet Kurag motions that he will approach the window and fire through that. Harnessing his greatclub he draws his bow and nocks an arrow ready to move out and assault when the others are ready.

Kurag then hears a huge commotion coming from inside the house.

Busy tonight so going without a map...
Kurag sees that he was spotted and quickly moves forward to get an optimal shot. Once at the window he fires at the closest orc.

Kurag advances to just before the window and fires at the Orc standing dumbfounded staggering the beast.
One of the Orcs will advance to the doorway, taunting you in rough common, Come dwarves! Get head bashed!
Next Up: Sergei and Bormann
Orc 3 & Orc 4 will also advance to the doorway on their turn.
Tactical Map updated.
Bormann Grimm |
Though his instincts are pushing him to charge right in, Bormann decides that it would be better in this instance to advance with a more united front with Sergei and really put the fear of the dwarves in these orcs... for the remainder of their short lives.
"Let's get them together, Sergei! he says as he strides forward at a pace compatible with Sergei's heavier armor.
I assume we'll stride for the door. I know it would take Sergei a double-move to get there so Bormann defers to Sergei's movement - intending to stand shoulder to shoulder against the orcs.
Greta Bolkasdottir |
Greta picks one of the orcs at random and casts charm person on it. Will Save DC 14. Pointing at him, she calls out in Common. "You, wouldn't you rather come outside and discuss this like reasonable folk do?"

Everyone give me their actions. The orc's intentions are to stay in the doorway, the charmed one will come out to talk, and the one in the window will keep throwing Javelins at Kurag if he is still alive.
Kurag Urlot III |
Kurag takes the powerful javelin throw to the chest as he coughs up some blood. $&#%! Broke a rib there at least. Need to finish this orc off quickly before he hits me that hard again.. He glances over to where Greta was asking for peace and after being injured Kurag was having none of it from this orc. This orc would pay for injuring him.
Taking careful aim Kurag draws back and releases another arrow at the invading orc.
Attack 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18 for 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Hoping this was enough to finish the orc Kurag looks for the next target for his arrows. If the Orc is still up though Kurag beats a quick move out of firing line to the side of the house. He could always move and fire again next time if he needed to.
DM RichD |
Round 2
Kurag releases an arrow which blows the orc in the window backwards. He dies before he hits the floor.
One of the orcs in the doorway is surpised that his friend in the back wants to talk to the 'dumb dwarfs'. Still waving his falchion menacingly at you he says to his friend in Orc
I will write the other orc's action with Greta's action depending on what Bormann and Sergei do..
Bormann Grimm |
I had planned on doing a double-move last round so that we'd be in reach of moving and striking this round but it looks like we only got moved enough for a single move (and that keeps Sergei too far out unless he charges, I think). In any event, I want to strike at the orcs this round so that's how I'll post.
Bormann moves forward with Sergei again with an eye to bringing the orcs to battle. When within reach, he unleashes a powerful chop at the orc before him.

@Kurag: The orcs each have dirty, studded leather armor, a falchion, and 4 javelins each.
There is still the cart outside and a pile of stuff in the house. There does not seem to be any sign of the occupants.
You suddenly hear a dwarven curse and in dwarven you hear, If ye squash one more beetle, I'll squash ye! You turn the corner and Sergei and Bormann see a familiar-looking dwarf. Kurag and Greta just see an odd-looking dwarf dressed all in blue. He is surrounded by four orcs and a fifth is busy stomping beetles on the ground. The are laughing a jeering at him in orc. The are so pre-occupied, that they don't notice you coming.
