Specifically this:
If you're in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat
So Aiding Another and then stepping out of the way so Tal can step up and attack isn't even valid.
Raveen Liquean |
I know, I mentioned it a week beforehand.
Since RichD allowed it for a week or so of combat, I had no reason to look a gift-ruling in the mouth.
Naberius Belthrune |
@DM RichD: Do you mind if Naberius starts in square D9, so I'm not in the way of people getting into position? I'm the least competent melee fighter here, so I don't know why I'd be right behind Tal.
Naberius Belthrune |
Since Raveen can neither attack or aid in attacking, I'll sit this one out as the last one.
I think we are trying to make room for Raveen and Tuesday, since these dogs don't have burning auras. I think. I hope! If we can get the three of you hacking at one of them at a time, this shouldn't take too long.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
good where I am unless the space behind is open for me to step back into after my attack.
Naberius Belthrune |
There should now be room for Tal to step back to B9 on his first turn.
If I may make a suggestion, Mera and Tuesday might want to switch places. That way, we can get our three melee fighters against one dog at a time. That should expedite things.
Raveen Liquean |
There is still a wall and one door. That provides a +4 to AC of the monster.
I strongly advise running the combat as last time. These two encounters have gone on long enough.
Naberius Belthrune |
If the dogs are allowed through one at a time to A9, Raveen, Tal, and Tuesday can gang up on them with minimal risk to themselves.
If we'd rather just have Tal roll a bunch of times to see how long this takes, that's fine too, assuming these canines prove no significant threat to him in his armor.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
It does not matter to me what way we go. These dogs are going downa bit quicker than the skeletons so hopefully 1 good attack roll next round will end it.
I do not want to monopolize the situation so any recommendations from others is appreciated. If you want me step back to allow more in I will. If you want me to stay up front to protect others fine as well.
Naberius Belthrune |
So, any idea if Mera and Monday are still around? Mera said she was planning on returning last week, and its been almost as long since Monday's last post. Not that there has been much for them to do, but it would be good to know if they are still with us.
Naberius Belthrune |
I'm still here.
Yay! Hopefully you aren't getting too bored. Do you have any idea when Mera is planning to make her return? Not that there is any rush in the present situation, but I'm just wondering if she is okay.
Monday Daud |
No, it's just that with the doge fights I kinda just out of the swing of things and need to get back in.
Haven't heard anything else from Mera other than what she told all us :(

Should someone PM her, just make sure she's still with us?
DM wrote:How far ahead is Raveen from everyone? Not sure. I'm at -L,-4. Where is everyone else?
We would probably be at I10 and back from there, far enough to not ruin Raveen's stealth, but close enough to rush in and help if he gets spotted.

Done.
Naberius Belthrune |
That was my first round action based on how I thought it was presented..
How so? Tal saw Raveen move up and shoot in the surprise round. He did nothing?
Then when Tal's turn comes, he remains a step behind Raveen when he can take the front lines? What are you planning?
Sorry if I'm being annoying, but can we please keep completely OOC posts in the discussion thread? It's a small thing, but I find it very distracting.
Monday Daud |
Yes, she's not feeling the best but she really wants to come back. She said she's gotta take care of some stuff but hopefully she'll be back tomorrow. Didn't mention cause I didn't want to get everybody's hopes up.
But here's hoping for the best!
Tal Bernard Mainz |
I am not playing at anything Raveen. When I looked the combat had started and it was indicated round 1.
None of us could actually see you from around the corner so IC I would not know when the surprise round technically would take place to take advantage of the situation. On my turn I moved as far as possible based on the positions from earlier that we were at. I did not move closer earlier to as I did not want your stealth roll wasted.
Mera Wist-Thrune |
Hi gang!
Apologies on my absence, I never intended to leave you. I'm struggling to find the balance of getting back here again and don't want to keep you from your favorite celebrity anymore than is necessary! :) I'll do my best to try and pick things back up ASAP. There are over a hundred posts in gameplay, so uh, that's a lot of reading and comprehension I'll be getting on.
Masked Conspirator |
The fates conspire to keep us apart.
I have an upcoming surgery that will keep me from anything more than a small notification for two weeks. I will be unable to keep up with all events (and possible messages) completely, but will be able to log in periodically for a short comment.
Mera Wist-Thrune |
Ah, thanks for the warm welcome guys.
Good luck Raveen, I hope you have a speedy recovery!
Naberius Belthrune |
@Naberius: Charm Person
That's what I thought. You might want to re-read that spell's description, because I don't think it functions like you think it functions. Tal is entitled to a +5 bonus to his save due to us being in combat against these guys. That's apparently not enough to save him, so now he thinks this Vethamer is his best buddy, and reacts favorably to his requests. Still, Vethamer should do an opposed Charisma check to make Tal do something he would not ordinarily do, such as abandoning his employer (if leaving combat is not personal enough).
DM RichD |
You are correct about the save and you are also correct that based on Tal's roll it would have done him no good.
Ahhh...Charm Person...IMO the hardest darn spell to interpret! I remember that there was once a guy at our tabletop game that argued in a combat situation, anything besides fighting the enemy was 'something his character would not normally do' and therefore the charisma check would have to be done for every suggestion that wasn't basically 'continue to beat the snot out of us'. That to me defeats the purpose of the spell, but where is that line drawn. Suggesting someone run away home sounds a more reasonable suggestion than 'kill your friends' so I would rule that although Mera is Tal's employer his duty to Lily is paramount and Vethamer's suggestion seems totally reasonable and welcomed. It is a very convoluted spell nonetheless.
Tal Bernard Mainz |
I have never used that spell in combat except for with one character. She was a sorceress, thus a very high charisma. The only way I used it in combat was to convince an enemy to surrender as we would not harm him. Being the best friend of that person made it a reasonable request to end the fighting. It only worked on a single remaining enemy or solo encounter as otherwise my GM ruled it would not make sense to surrender while others were still fighting. Also if someone attacked him again then the spell was broken.
I agree though that it is the hardest 1st level spell to adjudicate.
Naberius Belthrune |
I've never really seen charm person as a combat spell either, so the limitations make complete sense to me. If you can just make people flee for the duration of the spell without the additional Charisma check, it totally trumps command, another 1st level enchantment spell which is primarily meant to be used in combat. That's a duration of 1 hour per level versus 1 round, period. Yikes!
It's true that it's hard to ajudicate what is 'something a character wouldn't ordinarily do,' but I think 'abandoning your friends while they are in danger' doesn't come naturally to more heroic characters. Especially Tal, whose job is protecting people. I could see Naberius being heartless enough where he could run away to save his own skin if compelled, but not Tal. It's your call, of course...
Regardless, since Tal is not just blindly following orders, he might stick around for a while and try to convince Mera that his new friend's idea is totally something they should all be doing... :)
Tal Bernard Mainz |
I was waiting till it was actually my turn before I acted. Since the spell was cast on their turn and not cause me to move till my turn there was some time to see how things panned out. I am still ok with however RichD decides and might even let him move Tal this turn just to keep things flowing and let him rule accordingly.
