DESCRIPTION:

Height: 6′4″ (193 cm), Weight: 187 lbs. (85 kg)

Naberius is a tall, wiry human man of Chelaxian descent, with the pale skin and sharp features common to that people: pronounced cheekbones, thin lips, and an aquiline nose flanked by dark eyes. He has a distinct aristocratic bearing, carrying himself with an air of dignity befitting a nobleman. Doing his best to appear well groomed, he is always meticulously clean-shaven, and his raven black hair is usually neatly combed back and tied to a tight ponytail. The conjurer carries a polished cane of dark wood, and wears a simple but well-tailored black frock coat with a vest of the same colour, and a green ascot held in place by a silver tie pin. He wears a few other pieces of plain silver jewelry, decorated with modest green gemstones. On his belt he carries a small dagger with a slender blade, which seems more fit for opening letters than fighting.

While he is a conflicted man, Naberius does his best to not let his insecurities show. He has lived his life in a world where showing weakness is harshly punished. As a result, he is always careful to maintain his composure, showing to the world only a facade of cool indifference. He is capable of being impeccably polite when it suits him, but is often arrogant and mercilessly sardonic when dealing with those he perceives as being beneath his station. He has no patience for fools, but he genuinely respects knowledge and ingenuity. Indeed, he prefers to make his decisions based logic and hard, cold facts rather than speculation or emotional impulses. Despite doing his best to appear confident in the eyes of others, his heart is always full of nagging doubt in himself and his abilities. Even if he is harsh to others, he is twice as hard on himself. As an extension of his near-obsession with upholding appeareances, he is very concerned about his looks, to the point of vanity.

Despite taking almost disproportionate pride in his heritage, Naberius holds no love for House Thrune or its lackeys (or indeed, even his own family). As he sees it, he has been unjustly denied that which is rightfully his. Having lived a life of relative luxury, he has only recently to face with the realities that many less privileged citizens of Cheliax have to deal with. He hates every second of it, and is determined to earn back the wealth and influence that he feels he deserves. While he has healthy respect for Hell and its denizens, he careful to maintain a distance from devil-worship. He sees his infernal dabbling as the means to an end, always careful to not summon anything he is not capable of controlling. For all his posturing, he yet lacks the conviction to take the next step in his quest for power. He even has brief moments of altruism, most often taking pity on people whose lot reminds him of his own miserable childhood.

Naberius is deeply unnerved by the undead, a fear bordering on phobia. He abandoned his studies into necromancy early in his career, after witnessing a fellow Acadamae student getting torn apart by an out-of-control ghoul. The increasing animosity between the school's conjurers and necromancers – which led to more than a few duels during Naberius' studies – discouraged him even further. His choice to not pursue studies in illusion stemmed from a less emotional standpoint. He simply never had interest in trickery, preferring to manipulate tangible forces and matter rather than figments.

BACKGROUND:

House Belthrune is minor branch of the Thrice-Damned House of Thrune, one that split from that notorious line long before its ascendance to the Throne of Cheliax. Their ancestor, Bellatrix Thrune, was something a 'white sheep' of the family, joining the Sword Knights of Aroden at a young age. She was best known for her outstanding bravery in defending a border community in Isger from a vicious pride of fiendish manticores, with just handful of troops at her command. At the end of her military career, she was rewarded with lands and a title of her own, after which she decided to retire and raise a family. Unfortunately, her descendants often failed to live up to her legacy. They were widely known as overly ambitious backstabbers, and they proved worthy of their reputation during the civil war. In the years of chaos caused by Aroden's death, they made the mistake of allying against their distant kin. The candidate they supported fell in the latter years of the war, along with their hopes of stepping out of the shadow of their more successful cousins. When defeat seemed certain, they were quick to abandon their allies and swear loyalty to the new rulers, but it was too late. House Belthrune lost most of its wealth, and all its holdings in northern Cheliax, near Kintargo.

Westcrown served as a safe haven for the family for multiple years after the war, as it did for many other noble families that had fallen out of favor after the war. Time and time again, their attempts at regaining even a portion their former status were halted by old rivalries, as all sides of the conflict saw them as cowards and traitors. After the mysterious death of Viscount Tiberius Belthrune, who had lead the family through the war, his oldest daughter rose to take his place. This woman, Eleutheria Belthrune, was a cunning and ruthless businessperson. It was she who made the decision to move her family to the former colony of Korvosa. She thought that there they could seek their fortune as merchants, away from the cutthroat politics of Westcrown, and the old enemies that hounded them in Cheliax. The plan was quite successful, including a profitable marriage with a local merchant, who died soon after under mysterious circumstances. Shortly the family had secured a place for itself in the lower upper-class of the Varisian city state.

Naberius was the youngest child of Eleutheria's lastborn son, Tiburtius Belthrune. He was an unambitious man and a distant father, and as such he never left much of an impression on Naberius. His mother, a daughter of lesser nobility of Korvosa, was much the same. As the youngest son of the youngest son, he was not set to inherit much of the family's new fortune, and was mostly ignored by his parents, aunts and uncles for most of his childhood. The weak, bookish boy was teased mercilessly by his older cousins and siblings. Desperate to prove himself and free himself from his family, he painstakingly taught himself the basics of magic over multiple years. Eventually his labors were rewarded by Eleutheria, who was always watching for any potential talents that could be used for the betterment of the family. After witnessing him perform a few simple cantrips, the old matriarch quickly sent Naberius to the Acadamae, the famed Korvosan school of magic focusing on conjuration, specifically that of devils.

The moment Naberius stepped through the gates of the Acadamae to the school grounds was the happiest of his life. He was finally unfettered from his painfully distant parents and the constant teasing of the other children. At last, he was free to pursue his own desires. As it turned out, the Acadamae was not quite as he had imagined. The entrance exam was grueling, but the talented young mageling passed it flying colors. The next few years, however, were far more humiliating than anything he had to suffer with his family. For the first three years of their careers in the Acadamae, students are essentially slaves to the older students and staff. The ones that survived the whims of their superiors get to move on to actual studies. Naberius witnessed (and committed) many unpleasant things during these years, most of which he has tried his best to forget.

Having endured his years of servitude, Naberius moved on to his arcane studies a changed man. He pursued his studies into conjuration with fervor, doing his best to avoid the scheming of his peers. Simultaneously seduced and repulsed by infernal power, he was always keenly aware of the true dangers involved with diabolism. Many of the other students were consumed by forces they could not control, but Naberius was always the epitome of academic caution. When he finally passed the Test of Summoning and graduated, he did at the top of his class. Naberius decided that this was all that the Acadamae and Korvosa could offer him, and made plans to move to Egorian, and continue his studies there. With only a short, formal letter about his departure to his family, he boarded a vessel to Cheliax.

The ship stopped in Nisroch and Kintargo, and other cities along the coast of Nidal and Cheliax. To his satisfaction, he soon noticed how much respect his education in the Acadamae garnered him abroad. Intoxicated by the opportunities that the world outside Korvosa and the walls of the Acadamae could offer, he let his usual caution slip, and had soon wasted most of his remaining allowance. He was not too worried, however, as he was confident in his ability to convince the professors at the Egorian Academy of his abilities (and to providing him room and board). As the ship docked in Egorian, these plans were quickly forgotten. The vessel was boarded by a small detachment of Hellknights from the Order of the Scourge, asking for the young conjurer by name, announcing that he was party to treason. Shocked and confused, and knowing the Hellknight's methods, Naberius cast a spell to grease the boards below the heavily armored knights, sending them sprawling for a moment. He used another spell to speed his way away from the scene, dissappearing into the docks of Egorian.

Naberius was horrified about what he had done. He knew that his escape had more to do with luck than anything, and perhaps the fact that so few Hellknights had been sent to apprehend him. He cursed his stupidity. Of course he should have gone with them to clear the situation. Surely it must have been a simple misunderstanding. He could not have done anything treasonous from behind the walls of Acadamae. Then it hit him, not unlike one of the mailed fists he had just managed to avoid. They were not searching him for something he had done. It must have been a crime that one of the members of his wretched family had committed, and now he was being pursued because he was assumed to be somehow involved! Even then, after all that time, one of those miserable schemers had managed to ruin everything he had worked for all those years. Naberius counted his remaining coins. He had enough for one more passage, but not far. That same night he boarded a boat back down the South Adivian River, to Westcrown.

While it was not far enough from Egorian for his tastes, Naberius quickly found that the former capital was a good place to disappear. It was not difficult for him to blend into the crowd. Unfortunately, his attempts of entreating with local nobility for work or shelter were not met with much success. Too afraid to cite his name or education in fear of being tracked by the Hellknights, he had to settle for less illustrious work to feed himself. After a few weeks of hiding in the outskirts Parego Spera, the commercial section of the city, Naberius has started to hire his talents out for less than reputable work. Increasingly desperate for protection, Naberius is ready for just about anything to avoid getting caught and dragged away for crimes he did not commit...
