DM Carbide |
That's kind of the problem...as the trap is described, even though they provide a DC to disarm (which you make exactly), there isn't really anything to disable. So I'm going to make something up.
Kragnor and Kali between them identify a slim rod along the back of the chest that, if the chest is opened, pushes down into the plinth, though what happens at that point is unknown. They're able to immobilize it so that the chest can be opened without the rod moving.
With that, the lock easily falls to their skills (DC 10 to open, which Kali can do automatically). Inside is a bleached cat skull and a faded note which reads, "Curiosity Kills: another ingenious demise, courtesy of Addington’s Fine Traps and Defenses." Neither are magic, nor are they worth anything.
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Kragnor reaches into the chest and removes the letter, reading it once, then twice before bursting out in laughter. "Ha!" He says, slapping his knee. "Right devious bloke that Addington, whoever he is or was." Kragnor shakes his head and looks around. "Where to?"
Senja Kala |
Senja laughs along with Kragnor, though the wayang’s laugh is tinged with more darkness, even a hint of madness, than the dwarf’s. ”A lot of trouble to go to just to make a joke,” he comments. ”This Addington reminds me of a fellow named Grimtooth I read about once, spared no expense in killing adventurers in the most elaborate fashion possible.”
The grim laughter fading from his voice, he continues, ”What say we try that hidden door you noticed on the far wall, Kragnor?”
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eva peers at the strange items in the ceiling, wondering if they're some kind of stone columns that would crush anyone attempting to open the chest, had the trap not been disabled.
Perception: 10 + 8 = 18
DM Carbide |
Eva, with closer inspection you realize that there's a very slight gap between the walls of the room and its ceiling.
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Kragnor nods to Senja and inspects the secret door.
Perception T20: 20 + 9 = 29
Eva Baldursdóttir |
As if the ceiling would drop/lower to crush people below? Can Eva identify the metal "discs" in the ceiling, or figure out what they're for?
After studying the ceiling for a bit, Eva moves to the hole and kneels to peek inside at the coppery gleam.
DM Carbide |
Looks that way, Eva. Identifying the function of the metal on the ceiling will take a Knowledge (Engineering) check, DC 15. The coppery gleam is actually a brass crank handle.
Eva Baldursdóttir |
"What do you think this does?" asks Eva, glancing around at the others as she kneels beside the hole in the floor. "It would seem that the ceiling was designed to crush its occupants, but the metal portions... I do not know their purpose."
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Kragnor stomps back over to Eva
"Wat are ya lookin fer?" He asks, peering into the hole.
KN: engineering: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
In response to Eva's question, the dwarf shrugs. "Beats me."
Kali Starr |
"I dunno what that's suppose to do, but I do know if I ever meet that Addington guy I'm going to kick him in the shins."
DM Carbide |
Anything more you're going to do in here before moving on?
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Kragnor goes back to examining the door.
T20 on perception, up thread. Prior to Eva's wild goose chase..... ;
DM Carbide |
To Kragnor's practiced eye, the door looks remarkably doorlike in its placid portality, presenting a probable paucity of potentially perfidious paraphernalia. Opening it reveals a small room with another concealed door directly across from where you came in.
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Kragnor carefully moves forward, looking for traps along the way, then searches the door.
Perception Hallway: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Perception Door: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Kali Starr |
"Pssst, is it all clear?" Kali asks in a quiet voice as the anticipation begins to wear on her.
DM Carbide |
Sorry; on the road most of the weekend.
The far secret door is apparently (and actually, as you find when you open it) lacking in traps. The room on the other side looks as though at one point it might have been beautiful; those days are long past, however. Now the wall of tapestries behind the massive wooden chair are shabby, faded, and mold-covered, and it's only with some effort that you can tell that they once depicted forest hunting scenes. Close to you is a stone table covered with weapons and other items, laid out as if on display in a shop.
The wooden chair is unadorned. It is, however, occupied by a skeleton and flanked by two more. A voice booms out as you enter, "WHO ARE YOU, AND WHY HAVE YOU COME HERE?"
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
*more mumble grumble*
Kali Starr |
Sense Motive: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18
"It seems like it's one of the skeleton talking, but it's definitely not. The jaw isn't moving." Kali warns the party, then addresses the voice, "Hey, are you Mr. Addington? I got something to give you."
DM Carbide |
The skeletons prepare to attack!

Kali Starr |
Recalling the previous battle with skeletons, this time Kali opts not to jump first in combat, but rather drops her human façade to reveal her true vulpine nature. "I can't bite them otherwise," she explains with a shrug.
Standard action: dropping alter self SLA

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Asvald's next song? Yes, yes...I know it's the obvious one.
Senja Kala |
Senja starts forward, then realizes he's moving before his friends have collected their wits. Don't want to be in the front rank against those things...
He pauses and taps Eva with a long, grey finger, transferring a bit of magical force to her.
Guidance on Eva.

Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eva shrugs and moves into the room, preparing to kick any enemy that comes near her. Moved 10', ready an unarmed strike.
Damage?: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
DM Carbide |
Melody should be back now, so I'll hold off a few hours before I bot her again. Asvald?
Melody Flaxseed |
Melody stops humming her tune and shakes her head a bit. Phew! I've got to learn not to space off like that during missions! What's going on now? Oh wow! Skeletons again! "Shelyn protect us!"
channel to harm: 1d6 ⇒ 1
I think I can hit all of them from where she is, assuming I can go that way. This 15' movement is rough.
DM Carbide |
With that roll, Melody, the saves don't matter. All the skeletons take a little bit of damage. Still waiting on the slacker Asvald.
Asvald Bjornson |
Asvald advances alongside Eva with his sword held defensively. ”Ha! It’s just more undead.”
Total defense and move.
DM Carbide |
The skeletons also hold action.
Kragnor is up!
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Kragnor moves into the room, drawing his lucerne hammer along the way!

Dwarven Willfullness?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Kragnor's minds floods with panic as he feels his muscles stop working!
Asvald Bjornson |
”Well we can’t let the dwarf have all the fun. Get in there Eva!” Asvald ribs.
Oratory: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
+2 to attack with unarmed strikes.
DM Carbide |
A lot of people have been delaying, and as one of them Eva can act now. Any skellies you close with will also get shots on you, though.
DM Carbide |
They readied as well, and do not have reach weapons.
