He chops at the goblin he injured before, trying to finish it off.

Weyve continues to chant until a shimmering light begins to appear in front of the goblins. Suddenly, a brilliant Eagle with gold and silver feathers appears in midair in front of a goblin!

Summoning a celestial eagle. Since I had to move to cover last round, I assume I only had a standard action to start casting, so I would have to spend another standard action to complete the spell.

Casting Time

Most spells have a casting time of 1 standard action. Others take 1 round or more, while a few require only a swift action.

A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action. It comes into effect just before the beginning of your turn in the round after you began casting the spell. You then act normally after the spell is completed.

Since I only had a standard I could not do a full-round action last turn. But I can start a full-round action. From Combat:

PRD wrote:

Start/Complete Full-Round Action

The "start full-round action" standard action lets you start undertaking a full-round action, which you can complete in the following round by using another standard action.

Very well, Weyve.

Gideon moves back into the fight, dispatching the wounded goblin with a critical slash of his machete!

Sling, Into Melee: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Lyra fires another bullet that sails past her target. She curses in annoyance!

Weyve completes his summoning spell, and a golden eagle appears, flanking a goblin with Calvin. It tears into the goblin with its talons, badly wounding it.

Calvin dispatches the injured goblin with a chop of his sword!

Tobar shoots one of the two remaining goblins, the bolt sinking into its back.

One of the goblins turns to try to take out the harrying eagle. He scores a hit, and the bird vanishes as quickly as it appeared! The other stabs at Calvin, but the gillman blocks the spear with his shield.

Shortspear vs. Eagle: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 221d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Shortspear vs. Calvin: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

5 damage to the eagle, which drops it to 0 HP and makes it go poof.

I don't know if any of them are not in melee, but if there is one that isn't in melee I'll aim for him.

Sling, Into Melee: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Crossbow bolts and sling bullets whiz past the goblins as most of you miss with your shots. The goblin Gideon attacks parries his machete with the haft of its spear. Calvin scores a good hit, though, severely wounding the uninjured of the pair of goblins.

With both of them injured, the goblins hoot as they withdraw from the fight, scurrying for the safety of the nearby woods.

Both goblins withdraw 40 feet away. Gideon can take an AoO on the one that he was flanking. You can choose to keep attacking or let them run away.

Male Human Bard (Archaeologist) 11; HP 69/69; AC 21/14/18; F+4/R+11/W+7; Init+3; Per+21; Arch.Luck+3+1,6/6

Gideon gives his own hoot of parting, letting the goblin retreat from him without further harrying it...though why he lets it he can't really explain.

He releases a deep breath and kneels to clean some of the goblin blood off of his sword on the clothing of one of the dead.

"Weyve, I don't suppose you'd mind giving me a heal? I know I have my own magic, but I feel like it's a better idea to keep my spells saved for Sleeps rather than using them for healing. We've still got that Goodberry wand too, don't we?"

Male Human Bard (Archaeologist) 11; HP 69/69; AC 21/14/18; F+4/R+11/W+7; Init+3; Per+21; Arch.Luck+3+1,6/6

Gideon brings out the Goodberry wand again, attempting to make a few of the healing berries for the group should they be needed.

Goodberries Made: : 2d4 + 2d4 + 2d4 + 2d4 ⇒ (4, 1) + (3, 1) + (2, 2) + (3, 1) = 17

That oughta do us for now I think. Man, that took a lot more rolls than last time. We had 45 charges left the last time we used the wand,
so now we're down to 41.

With a small cache of berries now stored away for a bloody day, Gideon moves on to the dais, first examining it for any markings or writing that may be etched on it, then looking for any irregular features or characteristics.

Dont forget you get a +4 to activate a wand you've already figured out before!

There don't appear to be any carvings or markings on the circular dais. As soon as Gideon approaches within 15 feet of it, the image of a humanoid figure flickers into existence on the dais and begins to address a nonexistent audience. The figure wears black robes befitting an academic or a spellcaster, and wears a peculiar metal helm that obscures all the wearer's features except the mouth. The front of the helmet is decorated by three upward-pointing tines, like a fork or a trident. The figure's words are clearly audible, but are spoken in Azlanti, and it gestures with its hands, as if to calm or reassure.

"Loyal citizens of the empire—fear not. The blot in the heavens is but a ruse by veiled foes to keep us distracted in this time of mounting chaos. Tend to your regular duties, and trust in the Ioun Imperative and your emperor to keep you safe. Do not fail us, and we shall not fail you."

Calvin scratches his head. "Wha? That's ah... language I don't know. Nice hat. Pointy." he mutters, walking around the image and seeing if it tracks him.

The image continues facing the same direction, seemingly oblivious to Calvin's presence.

The dais appears to duplicate the effects of a permanent image spell, programmed to appear whenever anybody approaches. Indeed, after a few minutes, the figure repeats the same message as before.

Weyve is unfamiliar with what the figure might be referring to.

Male Human Bard (Archaeologist) 11; HP 69/69; AC 21/14/18; F+4/R+11/W+7; Init+3; Per+21; Arch.Luck+3+1,6/6

Thanks Calvin! I had added it in, but I thought it was a +2 bonus, not +4. Wouldn't have made a difference in any of those rolls, but I'll remember it in the future.

"Remarkable indeed! Some kind of...recording device, probably similar to that clockwork spy we saw the other day, but on a much larger scale! Clearly the Azlanti were very skilled with magic that allowed to the recording and replaying of images and speech...there must be others of these, here or throughout the old Azlanti Empire. Or at least there were...but as pristine a condition as this one is in after so long a time, I find it difficult to believe that there wouldn't be more of them. Give me a moment, I'm going to sketch that figure. Someone keep it replaying while I'm drawing." the scholar asks, throwing a quick sketch onto his pad as swiftly as he can, all the while searching his memory for anything that might hang on those two phrases from the recording.

Gideon is likewise unfamiliar with the phrases the illusory figure uses.

"It's a good idea. He might be able to shed some light on what the guy in the recording is talking about, too." Gideon answers. "In the meantime, is there any more to discover here? I didn't notice anything earlier, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to find. Or maybe we should go grab Carver and bring him back, get a fresh set of eyes on the place."

"We will need to make sure he comes with a guard or two. Those goblins that got away are going to be a nuisance." Calvin objects, popping a berry in his mouth.

"Before that happens, we might as well survey the place. Never know what else might be around. Let's split into pairs and search around."

Weyve begins looking around and taking notes.

If we have time to thoroughly scout the place I will take 20 on perception for a 27. This would probably take hours, but I figure we have time. But if we have to hurry:

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

You search around the area for a bit more, but there doesn't seem to be anything else to discover here. Lyra leads you back to the colony, where you find Carver on patrol with Antona Sedgewick. After finding another soldier to cover their shift, the two accompany you back to the ruins. The sun has begun to set by the time you return, bathing the scene in fading orange light.

You approach the dais, but fortunately no goblins assault you this time. When the image of the speaker springs to life, Carver gasps in astonishment.

"That helmet! Do you realize its significance?" He glances around furtively, looking particularly at Antona for a few moments. The soldier betrays no emotion, though, so Carver shrugs and turns back to you, seemingly having made up his mind about something.

"This man is wearing a powerful artifact called a decemvirate helm. At least, that's what we call it in the Pathfinder Society. The Decemvirate is a secret council that governs the Society, and the helms are enchanted to protect their anonymity."

He reaches into his shirt and pulls out a compass emblazoned with a glyph--a wayfinder, the symbol of the Pathfinder Society. "Yes, I am a Pathfinder. The venture captain who assigned me to this expedition was worried about spies from the Aspis Consortium, so he wanted me to keep a low profile. But it was too great an opportunity to pass up. We suspected Talmandor's Bounty was located near Azlanti ruins originally explored by the founder of our organization, Durvin Gest. Seeing this image lends credence to our theories."

"So what does this mean? All of the helmets that the Pathfinder Decemvirate wear are actually these très-unfashionable headpieces from an earlier civilization?"

"I don't know if they are original Azlanti pieces or if they discovered some way to replicate the process to create new helmets. The wayfinders were originally Azlanti artifacts, too, but we discovered the secret to their creation long ago and now the Society mass produces them. But there are bound to be many more secrets of the old empire hidden around the island!" Carver says excitedly.

"My goal here is to survey and explore. I'd be happy for any aid you could lend me in my endeavors. And if you are interested, I'm authorized to issue field commissions to potential new Pathfinders."

"But back to the recording here...what is he referring to when he mentions the blot in the sky? I don't remember ever reading anything about it in the literature I've come across."

Carver Knowledge (history): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12

"Hmm... I'm not entirely sure," Carver says, frowning. "He mentions a 'time of mounting chaos.' Perhaps it is related to the days before Earthfall? Some side effect of the magic that pulled the Starstone from the heavens to smash into Golarion?"

Male Human Bard (Archaeologist) 11; HP 69/69; AC 21/14/18; F+4/R+11/W+7; Init+3; Per+21; Arch.Luck+3+1,6/6

"It's really the only thing that makes sense...I mean, from what we know of Azlanti civilization, it was the height of human culture and the largest human empire that we presently know of, isn't it? And as far as we know, Earthfall is what caused their destruction, right? Maybe this 'blot' that he's talking about wasn't as innocuous as he was trying to make people believe..."

"Trying to keep the citizens from panicking? That seems likely," Carver says.

"He mentions the 'Ioun Imperative.' I don't know what that means, but ioun stones are reputedly of Azlanti origin. Perhaps Ioun is the name of the inventor, and this is some decree issued by him?"

"As to this Pathfinder Society... I don't know. I am employed by the expedition, and I'm not sure I'm comfortable serving two masters at once."

"I've never heard of the Ioun Imperative before. Perhaps there are more clues about it hidden somewhere on the island. We'll have to keep our eyes open!"

Carver nods at Calvin and Weyve when they turn down his offer, but he smiles when Gideon expresses interest. "There's not much ceremony to stand on when offering field commissions. The only loot we found in that time was the sapphire in that circlet underground, worth 875 GP, the ioun gauntlet that Gideon claimed, and the mossy disk ioun stone that was in it. We also have that tourmaline sphere ioun stone that no one ever laid claim to. Its benefit is that, if you're dying, you treat your CON as if it's two points higher for the death threshold. If we decide we don't want that, it's worth 500 GP selling.

The mossy disk ioun stone that was in the ioun gauntlet grants a +5 competence bonus on Know(Engineering) checks; I don't want to be greedy and run around claiming everything under the sun. Tobar is the only other character with ranks in Know(Engineering), so it's yours if you want it, dude.

Well, Tobar has an interest in mechanisms and gears and springs and such, but I don't have a good way to hang onto an ioun stone right now (no wayfinder or whatnot) and I don't recall using the skill too much so it's not a necessity or anything.

If I recall, you don't have to have a receptacle for an ioun stone. You just let them float in the air around you.

I know, but that's:

1. Susceptible to them being stolen by enemies
2. Dorky looking

Terana will wear them if no-one else will, then Tobar doesn't have to worry about looking Dorky Cool until he needs it. :)

Gideon definitely would wear the gauntlet and the stone, but I feel like I've been calling dibs on a lot of stuff for him and I don't wanna be greedy about it.

A scroll of delay poison for each of us would cost 625 gp, counting Oorka. Can Gideon owe someone the gold for his scroll? He's a bit low at the moment. Unless y'all wanna just try and trade him that gem we found for the scrolls, but that would also come out in his favor by 250 gold and I'm not sure that we like Kurvis that much. :P

I can float cash for Gideon.

Terana still has precisely 0 money... is that a problem? :)

She earns 1gp for every hit point she loses defending the rest of the party right?

So, ready to buy the scrolls and head back to the swamp?

Hey Everyone, I'm away for the next twelve days in Florida - going to Disney World for the first time!

I won't be able to check my games while I'm away so I'm on pause until the 10th (or possibly the 11th if I'm too jet-lagged!).

Please feel free to bot me as the situation requires! [And definitely use a smite or two if need be - I don't know how easy it will be to hit them otherwise...]

I had a post casting Glitterdust but I deleted it because I remembered that wisps have spell immunity. Would that still apply even against Glitterdust, since the spell isn't targeting the wisp directly but only the area the wisp is in? If it would still be visible I'll re-post that action but I don't want to waste the spell if it wouldn't do anything.

Of course, if that's something that Gideon wouldn't know himself, I'll repost the action then, too. Not trying to meta-game here.

Glitterdust doesn't allow spell resistance, so it will work.

Someone get me some space to work with! :)

So...taking this OOC for a minute. We've been rightly and truly screwed in fights before, but at this point, we've all taken a bare minimum of 19 damage; Terana is taking 30 and will be stunned, Oorka is knocked out, and we haven't even started fighting yet.

Realistically, what are our options here? I'm tempted to try and hold out for that one round Terana is stunned and then run. I don't think this is a fight we can hold our ground on and win, as we are. Thoughts?

EDIT: Wait wait! Gideon agreed to cast Heroism on Terana again before we entered the cave complex! Terana, did you remember that +2 on your saves? You'd make the fort save with that.

RETIRED - divine guardian of the Compass (Ruins of Azlant)

I couldn't remember if I did get the buff or not, so I didn't include it. I didn't use it for the entire last fight either... *facepalm*

This could help!

Also - can we try and get Terana a shield? If I'm going to end up holding choke-points a lot it would help!

Yay, heroism!

Single File marching order should always include a gap behind the lead and second man, to allow for a 5' step back if necessary.

At 4th level, and at every three levels thereafter, the paladin may smite evil one additional time per day, as indicated on Table: Paladin, to a maximum of seven times per day at 19th level.

Since my target isn't dead, and I haven't rested/regained uses of the ability I don't think the first one ends? Which suggests I could have multiple active smites...

The rules aren't very clear because they wrote it for when the pally only has one smite and its therefore a non-issue, but I'd expect a clause to the effect of 'a paladin can only have one active smite at a time' if it was a thing.

I'm fine with taking the smite back though :)

Ah, perhaps you're right. I haven't looked at the paladin's write-up in a long time. Carry on, then!

RETIRED - divine guardian of the Compass (Ruins of Azlant)

Weyve, can you move the fireball onto the gillman that's still standing? I wanna get the cleric.

Remember there is still grease there, though. You'd have to make a DC 10 Acrobatics check and move at half speed or fall prone.

Yes, you can dismiss it as a standard action.

Taking this to the Discussion thread again since Weyve made the suggestion...is bugging out the best way to end this encounter (for now)? I know that Terana just got into melee, but withdrawing is an option and I can always lay down another Grease to cover a retreat. I've still got most of my first-level spells, but with our healer pretty much tapped out, I'm not convinced staying and fighting is a good option.

Just to make my thoughts clear...I think we should withdraw. Heck, we should've withdrawn this round rather than press the fight against a caster and her pet. I'm out of 2nd level spells myself, and though I can still use CLW a few times, it's not gonna be enough to get us out of this encounter. Bug out and use that flaming sphere to plug the bottleneck cover our retreat. I can use Vanish to give anyone who wants it 30 seconds of invisibility, too. I still have enough 1st level spells to cover the whole party.

RETIRED - divine guardian of the Compass (Ruins of Azlant)

I think the problem is getting Oorka out. I have enough HP to play rearguard but who carries Oorka in that case? Also, what stops them pursuing us, particularly the bug thing with the teleporting? I agree we might be able to split them up, but I don't think at this point we can guarentee a clean get away...

If someone communicates to Terana she will fall back though :)

Male Human Bard (Archaeologist) 11; HP 69/69; AC 21/14/18; F+4/R+11/W+7; Init+3; Per+21; Arch.Luck+3+1,6/6

Well...being a young trix, Oorka probably doesn't weigh that much. Two of us could split her weight if we need to. That would leave Terana a hand free to pick up her glaive, too, as we're falling back. I can hold an action to let Terana full-round withdraw, then drop a Grease on the floor again to slow the ones still in that chamber, if we think it's necessary. I still have the option of casting Vanish as we retreat, too, so that at least some of us stand a better chance of getting away.

We're on a fresh round now, so we should take this time to really make the retreat as loss-less as possible. Even if the bug thing does follow us, taking care of it, alone, will be easier than taking out the rest of the gillmen with it.

I think Terana should withdraw and pick her glaive up on the way by, if Brainiac would allow her to grab her weapon as she's running by. I'll drop another Grease on the floor after Terana is past the bottleneck, then Weyve can park the flaming sphere on top of the grease as a further reason not to pursue; the flames would probably help visually obscure our retreat, too. The two of us would have a move action each left to start getting out. Tobar could grab Oorka then and take a move action to start getting out. Next round, everyone full-round withdraws and continues to until we're not in immediate danger. If we need to add five-foot steps to get out of melee with the bug so we can cast, it'll add a round before the running starts, but it still allows the running to start.

Thoughts?

It works. Drastically against Terana's character to run away like this but sometimes needs must!

Seeing the others continuing the fight despite the damage they've taken, and Oorka's unconscious form lying near him, Gideon curses again. "Dammit! Sinashakti, guide my shot here!" he says, voicing his inner thought as he calls on the empyreal lord of explorers.

Five-foot step into the bottleneck to get within PBS range of her, then shoot. Activating my last AL for the day, too.

Shortbow Attack+PBS+AL+Bless: 1d20 + 7 + 1 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 7 + 1 + 3 + 1 = 31

Weyve is quite happy taking the mithral chainmail.

Does the +1 rapier work for Gideon?

Weyve suggested camping in this cave. Gideon suggested heading towards the nearest friendly place, which would be Vriskirsa's lair on the east coast. Which route would you like to pursue?

Male Human Bard (Archaeologist) 11; HP 69/69; AC 21/14/18; F+4/R+11/W+7; Init+3; Per+21; Arch.Luck+3+1,6/6

Hmm. The rapier would probably work for Gideon, sure. As for which route to pursue, it probably would be safer to camp in the cave; I'd just suggest that we block the entrance as much as we can to make sure that unfriendlies can't get to us as easily. And clean out the bodies of course.

RETIRED - divine guardian of the Compass (Ruins of Azlant)

Stay in the cave. IF you guys let Terana cat nap for four hours then I can keep watch the rest of the time and just use LoH to clear the fatigue afterwards! ;)

And now the fateful question: Do I take gunslinger 6, or do I multiclass into something else like inquisitor or slayer?

RETIRED - divine guardian of the Compass (Ruins of Azlant)

What does gunslinger 6 get you? Is it worth the switch to slayer - good skills, Studied Target, good saves and BAB. Slayer has a lot going for it!

INACTIVE - GAME DIED

Higher levels of gunslinger have a few perks but they're generally kinda lackluster. Inquisitor would give me some spells and powers, but it hits my BAB. Slayer could give me continued strong BAB, hit points, and eventually some talents and sneak attack, which is really strong, hence why I'm considering it.

RETIRED - divine guardian of the Compass (Ruins of Azlant)

Slayer looks like a nice way to go then - its probably the single best class out there for a non-spellcasting and it sure isn't gonna hurt.

Terana is done up to Pally 6 now :) No multi-classing here!
