Calvin Shoals
Calvin meets the big Grindylow's bellow with one of his own and charges forward, thrusting out with his sword as he crosses the open ground swiftly.
Charging, Power Attacking
Charge!: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 2 - 1 = 22
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 2 = 14
Nice! AC:17 until my next turn because of charging.
Gideon Ross
Gideon advances and turns his shortbow against the single small grindylow, hoping that he can bring it down and leave them only one creature to worry about fighting.
Shortbow Attack+AL+PBS: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 2 + 1 = 17
Shortbow Damage+AL+PBS: 1d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 1 = 9
Archaeologist's Luck: 5/6 remaining.
Weyve Murkwater
"So if a grindylow is a sea-goblin, and a hobgoblin is a big goblin, does that make this big guy a hob-grindylow?"
Weyve levels his crossbow and takes a shot at the smaller grindylow before it gets engaged in melee.
I don't see the little one on the map. If I don't have a shot from here, move my icon to where I do.
x-bow: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 161d8 ⇒ 1
On the other hand, if the little one is already dead from Gideon's shot, I will throw a shadow trap at the big guy. Will DC 16 negates.
DM Brainiac
Calvin charges forward, delivering a powerful slice across the large grindylow's chest. Gideon follows in his wake, dispatching the smaller grindylow with a single well-placed arrow!
Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Weyve tries to trap the giant grindylow with her own shadow, but she resists the spell.
Tobar moves up and shoots the grindylow in the arm, further wounding it.
The creature roars and slides across the ground to get next to Calvin and Gideon. Her tentacles tangle around the gillman's legs, tripping him, then she cleaves through both him and the bard with her spear!
Trip: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Spear, Power Attack, Prone, Cleave: 1d20 + 9 - 1 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 9 - 1 + 4 = 211d8 + 8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 8 + 3 = 16
Spear, Power Attack, Cleave: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 9 - 1 = 161d8 + 8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 3 = 17
Ouch! 16 damage to Calvin, 17 damage to Gideon. Calvin has fallen prone, and Gideon is unconscious and bleeding. :(
Gideon Ross
Better shape than I'm in, at -3...crap, that was bad luck. Rolled one less and it would've missed me.
Stabilize: 1d20 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (8) + 2 - 3 = 7
Make that -4. Good luck guys! Fingers crossed that y'all can kill this thing!
Weyve Murkwater
"Oh, no!"
Weyve's eyes turn black as he throws another cloud of shadows at the Giant Grindylow.
Shadow trap again, Will save DC 16.
Man... being able to trip and then attack in the same round is a killer combo!
If the spell sticks this time, his -4 to DEX will offset some of Calvin's -4 to hit from being prone, and will help Tobar get another shot in.
Calvin Shoals
Gideon Ross
Well... maybe it's close enough to down that a good hit from Tobar will drop it. You never know.

DM Brainiac
Tobar, you already made your attack roll for this round.
Calvin slashes at the creature from the ground, but it easily dodges his clumsy swing.
Weyve attempts a shadow trap again, and again, the creature resists the spell.
Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Tobar fires another shot, but the attack goes wide.
The grindylow leans down and bites Calvin with its razor-sharp teeth. It comes inches from tearing his throat out and killing him instantly, but the devastating attack drops the gillman all the same.
Turning to Tobar, the creature quickly slithers over and stabs the crossbowman with its spear, another powerful strike! Then its tentacles warp around his legs and drag him to the ground!
Bite, Power Attack, Prone: 1d20 + 4 - 1 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 - 1 + 4 = 271d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Confirm?: 1d20 + 4 - 1 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 - 1 + 4 = 18
Spear, Power Attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 9 - 1 = 211d8 + 8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 3 = 18
Trip: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
7 damage to Calvin. 18 damage to Tobar, and he falls prone! This is not looking good... :(
Tobar Iverrov
Sorry for the mistake. I was out of town this weekend, then when I got back my S.O. was robbed at work (was the only person on shift at the time). It's been a bad start to the week.
Knocked down, Tobar ditches his crossbow and lashes out with his spiked gauntlet.
Spiked gauntlet, prone: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 3 - 4 = 19
Confirm crit, prone: 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 3 - 4 = 5
Spiked gauntlet damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Weyve Murkwater
Weyve murmurs something and his fingertips begin to glow. He steps forwards, and reaches down to touch Calvin.
"Come on, brother."
Casting cure light wounds, then stepping in and delivering the spell as a touch attack. If Calvin wakes up then there are more targets and more actions at least.
touch attack VS AC 5, -4 fighting defensively: 1d20 - 1 - 4 ⇒ (18) - 1 - 4 = 13
CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
what were you saying about the Dice Gods?
I am now in melee range with the BBEG (but not adjacent to Tobar). If he doesn't take me down in one shot I can lay on hands myself.
DM Brainiac
Weyve moves over to heal Calvin. While the spell stabilizes the other gillman, he doesn't regain consciousness.
Tobar punches desperately with his spiked gauntlet, impaling the grindylow. It shrieks in rage!
The grindylow retaliates, stabbing down at Tobar and biting at him, but he manages to dodge both attacks!
Spear, Power Attack, Prone: 1d20 + 9 - 1 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 9 - 1 + 4 = 15
Bite, Power Attack, Prone: 1d20 + 4 - 1 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 1 + 4 = 8
Lucky! Keep it rolling!
Weyve Murkwater
Weyve leans over, his hand glowing again.
"Wake up, Calvin!"
Healer's Way (Lay on hands): 1d6 ⇒ 4
Using this because I am pretty sure Lay on Hands does not provoke. I think that brings Calvin to 1 HP. Assuming he is now conscious...
Weyve steps back a few steps. "Come on, you slimy beast!"
Move action to move 10'. I AM DELIBERATELY PROVOKING HERE. He might take me down but if the grindylow uses his AoO it gives the others a chance to crawl away or stand up without provoking.
If the Grindylow hits me with an AoO but does not drop me I will use Healer's Way on myself as a swift action.
Edit: Just realized I was not where I thought I was. I think the GM moved my Icon because I got Calvin and Gideon's icons mixed up. So in this case I will provoke by going behind the pillar and then up to the square to the SE of the grindylow, and then one more square away. I don't want to end my turn in melee in case Tobar is able to get a shot off with his crossbow.
DM Brainiac
AoO: Spear, Power Attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (15) + 9 - 1 = 231d8 + 8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 3 = 17
The grindylow snarls at Weyve and stabs him as he rushes by her. He staggers from the vicious wound, barely managing to stay on his feet.
17 damage to Weyve, leaving him at 0. That still lets him use lay on hands on himself to get back to positive HP. And Calvin and Tobar are free to stand up now without provoking another AoO.
Calvin is conscious with 1 HP.
Weyve Murkwater
Weyve places his hand over the wound, trying to stanch the bleeding. His hand glows for a moment...
Healer's Way: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Gideon Ross
Stabilize: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 2 - 4 = 13
Woo!
While still unconscious, Gideon's wounds don't seem to be bleeding as heavily as they were.

Calvin Shoals
Calvin rises to his feet desperate to finish the fight.
Power Attack, Flank: 1d20 + 7 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 7 + 2 - 1 = 20
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 2 = 8
Gideon Ross
Could Tobar just...I dunno, roll for a five foot step, load his crossbow, and attack at range, now that Calvin has gotten his attack in? That would let him attack with his highest bonus for attack and damage, since he already has precise shot. Or would he have to actually stand up before doing something like that?
-Posted with Wayfinder
DM Brainiac
He would have to stand up, but he could still shoot from an adjacent square since the grindylow can't take another attack of opportunity. Or he could reload and shoot from prone without penalties.
He could also spend a point of grit to use sharp shoot and target touch AC for a better chance of hitting.
Tobar Iverrov
Tobar grabs his crossbow again and, still on his back, draws down and makes the best shot that he can.
Spending 1 grit to sharp shoot.
Crossbow attack, point-blank: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 6 + 1 = 26
Confirm crit, point-blank: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 6 + 1 = 21
Crit damage, point-blank: 2d8 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (4, 8) + 2 + 2 = 16
DM Brainiac
Woohoo!
As the grindylow stabs Weyve, Tobar calls upon his grit and fires his crossbow up at the monster. The bolt buries itself in her neck, and she gurgles and staggers back as blood pours from the deep wound!
This gives Calvin the opening he needs to rise to his feet. With a desperate cry, he drives his sword deep into the grindylow's back. She shrieks and spasms as he yanks the blade free, then collapses to the cave floor, tentacles twitching feebly before at last falling still.
The grindylow has a magic ring, magic amulet, and magic spear. There is also a chest nearby that has rusted shut. Bashing it open reveals a magic mithral shirt, magic ring, magic wand, and 470 gp minted in Cheliax before the rise of House Thrune.
Calvin Shoals
Calvin moves to drag the fallen out of the water, and only after they're stable will he look through the gear. Bashing the chest open is easy enough.

Tobar Iverrov
Tobar lies on the muddy sand for a while, simply panting and holding his empty crossbow. Finally, he pushes himself painfully to his feet.
"Best not to stick around, 'less some more of those things come back from huntin' or whatnot," he finally says. "C'n we get Gideon back up?"
Calvin Shoals
Calvin will look over at Weyve. "Got any of that healing mojo left? Gideon could use it."
Now he's under some kind of care, Calvin leaves Gideon to Weyve and sees about getting the chest open.
Strength: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Weyve Murkwater
That was a well-timed crit! For the record, you could also have crawled 5' as a move action and then taken a shot. The Grindylow had used up his AoO. I have done the "sacrifice provoke" before and it is always risky but usually worth it.
GM: Care to share what it's total HP was?
Weyve slumps down.
"He was... very strong. Was that a he? I thought we were doomed. Even if I ran... those things can swim a lot faster than I can."
Weyve shakes his head, trying to clear his mind. He goes over to the others, looking to treat their wounds.
CLW (Gideon): 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

"I have no healing left. We should see if we can find more berries to use with that wand."
Weyve turns to the magic items, and his eyes turn blue.

Gideon Ross
Gideon opens his eyes when the healing magic washes over him, immediately rolling to one side, his eyes darting wildly. "Wha?! Where's the grindy..." he trails off, looking at the corpse for a moment as he trails off, "...low. So... guess we won?" he asks, then looks down at himself as the adrenaline and healing magic wane, leaving him profoundly sore and hurting.
"Nngghh...geez... so..how close did we come to losing, exactly?" he asks, looking around to see the others in not much better condition.

Calvin Shoals
"Lets put it this way," Calvin replies. "The only one who wasn't on the ground at least once was Weyve, and not for lack of trying."
He looks over the items found and holds out the ring. "Either you or Tobar need this. Help you swim better."
-Posted with Wayfinder
Gideon Ross
"Geez...a lot closer than I'd like us to have gotten, that's for sure..." Gideon answers, reaching up to rub the back of his neck while looking over the corpse of the creature that was very nearly the end of them all.
Looking over at the ring that Calvin presents, Gideon fingers it for a moment, then looks at Tobar. "What do you think? It'd be useful for either of us, for sure. Kinda got my eye on that spear over there, and I don't wanna be greedy...what were you not able to identify, Weyve? I'll take a crack at whatever you're missing."
"In the meantime, does anyone need healing? Probably ought to use a Cure spell for me, 'cause I think the spear wound in my stomach needs a bit more work...but I'll still have two other spells I can cast before I need to rest again. If anyone's in bad need of more healing, I'll have that." he offers, going ahead and casting the aforementioned healing spell on his own wounds.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Woo! Back up to full health! If any of you take the offer of more healing, gonna go ahead and roll for two more CLWs.

Everyone was at either 3 or 4 HP. Do we have any goodberries left?
Gideon: You can also try to identify stuff. I failed to identify the amulet, spear, and the ring from the chest.
"Do we want to try to head back to the ship now? Or should we rest up here? This area seems fairly secure."
Calvin Shoals
"We should head back to the ship as soon as possible. I think we've broken the back of the Grindylows, but there might be stragglers we would have to deal with." Calvin suggests.
Calvin Shoals
"Yeah I know." Calvin says with a chuckle. "But Gideon was unconscious then. Bore repeating."
DM Brainiac
You leave the cave and return to the ship to report your success. "Well done," Ramona says, though she looks at your wounds with concern. "It looks like it was a hard-fought victory. I am glad you all made it back out of there! Father Eamon? Father Kurvis? Some healing, please?"
"Ah, the adventurers require healing!" says Eamon Caranth as he steps out of the crowd. The tall half-elf has straw colored hair and an infectious smile. He wears green robes and the holy symbol of Erastil around his neck. "Come, Father Grouse! It's time to stop being a curmudgeon and earn our keep on this expedition."
Kurvis Nurpico, a relatively short man with slightly stooped shoulders and short steel-grey hair, emerges beside him. He wears black robes and the holy symbol of Abadar. "Yes, yes, Father Easy. I'm coming! They do have coin to pay for my services, I hope."
Eamon laughs. "Payment? Where is your sense of community spirit, eh? We're all on this crazy expedition together. We all need to do our part to ensure its success."
Kurvis grunts. "Fine, fine. I'll send the bill to the Bountiful Venture Company later."
Both clerics grasp their holy symbols and channel healing energy until your wounds have vanished.
Everybody heals back to full health.

Before...
Gideon takes a look at the artifacts that have yet to be identified.
Using Archaeologist's Luck to get a +2 bonus on all three of these rolls; will leave me with 2 of my 6 ALs for the day.
Spellcraft(Amulet): 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 2 = 12
Spellcraft(Spear): 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 6 + 2 = 20
Spellcraft(Ring): 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 2 = 17
After making his attempts, Gideon will also inspect the hand that is in the sand at the cave as thoroughly as he can; what it's made of, if it's broken off or something more buried, dimensions, any other qualities of note, and also makes a sketch of it in his journal, before the group departs.
Now...
"Thank you very much, gentlemen; 'hard fought' is quite an understatement, I think...we almost didn't make it back out of that cave. Not that I was conscious for most of the fight to really give you a report on what happened. I'll have to leave that to the others." he admits.
When a moment of peace can be had, Gideon will take any of the magical things they haven't been able to puzzle out yet to the two clerics, hoping their own knowledge of spellcraft will be able to reveal their workings.
DM Brainiac
Gideon is only able to identify the spear.
It's a +1 spear.
The hand sculpture is feminine in form and made from a pearlescent sea green marble. It appears to be part of a larger statue buried underground, but unearthing it would take powerful magic or a significant amount of hard labor.
On the ship, the two clerics study the remaining items and are able to identify them.
Amulet of natural armor +1, ring of ferocious action.
Calvin Shoals
"Much thanks, fathers." Calvin says, nodding gratefully. "That was close, but we took care of the Grindylows and removed their leader."
Gideon Ross
"There's some kind of statue in the cave down there, too. All that was above ground was a feminine hand, seemingly made of a pearlescent marble. It seemed like there was more buried under the sand, but it would take heavy equipment or heavy magic one to unearth it." Gideon adds.
DM Brainiac
"Interesting," Ramona says. "I don't know if it would be worth the effort to see the rest of the statue, but we can definitely note its location and return some point in the future."
The Peregrine sails south back to Talmandor's Bounty, making the journey in a couple of hours. Upon arrival, the ship drops anchor in the bay and both the crew and colonists work together to begin unloading the ship using the ship's boats.
"The Peregrine will depart tomorrow morning," Ramona says. "If you have any treasures you wish to sell, you can leave them with Captain Markosi, and he will send the proceeds of your sales back with the next supply ship. You may also place an order for equipment and special provisions."
Basically, you can buy and sell items as normal, just with a six-week-long delay in between purchasing items and receiving them.
"Now then, why don't you show me around the colony and point out any areas of concern?"
Weyve Murkwater
"Interesting," Ramona says. "I don't know if it would be worth the effort to see the rest of the statue, but we can definitely note its location and return some point in the future."
"Actually, there may be some magic that allows a person to tunnel through the earth. Such a spell would allow a single person to examine what was below without digging the whole place up."
There must be a spell that grants a burrow speed.
"Now then, why don't you show me around the colony and point out any areas of concern?"
"Captain, I should point out that while we may have eliminated the obvious threats, we still have no idea what happened to the colonists. We found no human remains or clues in the Grindylow cavern... unless any of you recognize these items? Did they belong to the first group of colonists?"
