DM Barcas - Skull & Shackles: Freedom of the Sea (Inactive)

Game Master Isaac Duplechain

With pirates, slavers, and Cheliax prowling the seas, there are some who still appreciate - and fight for - the freedom of the sea.

Guys, I've read your game-thread and it's epically cool. I almost cried, because of Iakob and Wyn. You are great, keep on playing. Barkas, highest respect to you!

I appreciate it! I've been having a great game so far, and I'm looking forward to many thousands of posts more.

Speaking of, I'm still getting back into a posting rhythm as I prepare for the second phase of my promotional process. Please bear with me.

Got a case. Capital murder.

My assessment is over! I have worked for six months and should end up quite high on the sergeant list. Thank you all so much for sticking with me. It's been a mental marathon.

Also, congrats to Thorn to making it to Homicide.

Congrats to you both! I bet you're very glad to have it all done, and to have done well.

Congrats indeed

Yeah, congratulations DM Barcas and Thorn. Well done! Good to see hard work rewarded.

Thank you all, I am sorry for not posting in a while I have been making the change over to Homicide and Refinancing my house but all is good and I will have a post up later today after I catch up on reading the others posts. again thanks.

It is finally over! I will promote within a few weeks, as I ended up 5th on the final list.

Male Human

I will be away from my computer for the next three to four days. I will strive to post, but no promises. Please DMPC my character as needed.

Halfling Bard (Sea Singer) 2/Rogue (Knife Master) 3 | HP 34/34 | AC 20 | T 16 | FF 14 | CMD 16 | Fort +4 | Ref +12 | Will +7 (+2 vs fear, +4 vs. air and water effects, or being knocked prone) | Init +4 | Perc +12

So, do I treat the new magical weapon Doran just found as a magical dagger or a magical kukri? Doran isn't proficient with a kukri.

Oh, I thought he was. The knife master sneak attack specifically mentions as working with kukri. Dagger it is, then.

Halfling Bard (Sea Singer) 2/Rogue (Knife Master) 3 | HP 34/34 | AC 20 | T 16 | FF 14 | CMD 16 | Fort +4 | Ref +12 | Will +7 (+2 vs fear, +4 vs. air and water effects, or being knocked prone) | Init +4 | Perc +12

Great, glad to hear it. As you say, Knife Master does work with the kukri, but the character has to have kukri proficiency for it to apply.

Male

Aarons last post reminded me of this, linky.

Halfling Bard (Sea Singer) 2/Rogue (Knife Master) 3 | HP 34/34 | AC 20 | T 16 | FF 14 | CMD 16 | Fort +4 | Ref +12 | Will +7 (+2 vs fear, +4 vs. air and water effects, or being knocked prone) | Init +4 | Perc +12

Funny, Sigz. Though I'm glad it resized for Doran. Would have made him very envious to have that knife in the party and too big for him to use. Hmm, don't they call jealousy/envy the "green-eyed monster"? Maybe that should play into the name for Doran's new dagger, since the fanged creature on the hilt has green eyes.

Envy has a nice ring to it.

The people that Vrunyar mentions are crew of the Wormwood. The Empty Lighthouse is crewed by a different, as-yet-unnamed crew of pirates answering to Barnabas Harrigan.

Rats! It was such a good idea, too.

I'm wondering if Doran might be able to blend in with the halflings working on the dock and learn a bit, maybe enlist a few to join us. But he might stand out if he's armed...

Male Human

Perhaps Aaron could try selling him. What is the worst that could happen? :-P

Sleight of Hand check?

M Dwarf Alchemist (Vivisectionist/Chirurgeon) 5 HP 39:39 | AC:17 T:12 FF:15 | CMD 17 | F:+6 R:+6 W:+3 | Init: +2 Per: +7

The PCs haven’t seen the Empty Lighthouse since we were given to Capt. Barnabas Harrigan and held on the Wormwood, right? I think I confused the ships together for my last post. We expected to see the Wormwood in port, didn’t we?

No, the whole reason for going to Rickety's is to steal the Lighthouse back.

M Dwarf Alchemist (Vivisectionist/Chirurgeon) 5 HP 39:39 | AC:17 T:12 FF:15 | CMD 17 | F:+6 R:+6 W:+3 | Init: +2 Per: +7

Are there other ships in the port? More directly, is the Wormwood there? I think I also got confused the places Port Peril and Rickety Squibb's. How far away is Port Peril to Rickety Squibb’s? Since the Man’s Promise is overdue to meet the Wormwood in Port Peril we should be on the lookout for Harrigan (as probably everyone else but me knows. Honestly, I feel stupid.)

Please ignore what Vrunyar’s last post ended with.

Oh I did some reading of past posts to find out how we knew the Empty Lighthouse was here. Plugg told us.

Halfling Bard (Sea Singer) 2/Rogue (Knife Master) 3 | HP 34/34 | AC 20 | T 16 | FF 14 | CMD 16 | Fort +4 | Ref +12 | Will +7 (+2 vs fear, +4 vs. air and water effects, or being knocked prone) | Init +4 | Perc +12

No cause to feel stupid, Vrun, I was right there with you when you started suggesting we enlist crew members we knew, and I wouldn't have been able to tell you which ship we were after off the top of my head. We had a pretty long dormant spell there, I lost a lot of details.

Now that we know what's what, shall we make a plan? Aaron and Doran could try to worm their way in a bit, Doran posing as a slave (with knives hidden per Barcas' excellent suggestion) and Aaron just taking advantage of no one in town knowing him. Maybe we can line up a few helping hands or just get the lay of the land that way. Not sure what we do after that, however.

Any genius ideas?

Port Peril is a large port city in Jeopardy Bay on the other side of the island of Devil's Arches. It's about 100 miles down the coastline. Rickety's Squibs is just a tiny little outfit - a few buildings and some docks.

M Dwarf Alchemist (Vivisectionist/Chirurgeon) 5 HP 39:39 | AC:17 T:12 FF:15 | CMD 17 | F:+6 R:+6 W:+3 | Init: +2 Per: +7

How neutral is the place? If we need repairs later, don’t we want to be on good terms?

Another idea I had, but don’t feel like suggesting it IC since Vrun already suggested a fire, is to have one of us (with a good bluff score) stumble into the “port” and flash the gems around claiming he needs help to claim the rest of the treasure he found. He leads a few men out into the jungle and we ambush them. It'd make the odds slightly better if we do need to escape from Rickety Squibbs, but I imagine the numbers are already a bit too high to fight our way through, even if five or six men were ambushed.

Squibbs is in the middle of nowhere. I think it would be very suspicious if Aaron was just to wander in from the jungle with a halfling in tow and try to sell him off. Just a thought.

Male Clan Gangrel 12th Gen

Apologies to all...
another of my aunts has died (many siblings all in their twilight years now so I suppose it shouldn't surprise though it is grim) and the visitation is one night the funeral another day so between that and the driving to it, well, just feel free to bot Ollivor if needed. I should be posting again Sunday night, monday at the latest

Not a problem. Sorry for your loss.

M Dwarf Alchemist (Vivisectionist/Chirurgeon) 5 HP 39:39 | AC:17 T:12 FF:15 | CMD 17 | F:+6 R:+6 W:+3 | Init: +2 Per: +7

Ollivor, belated condolences. Even when not a surprise it still is a blow and painful. I hope the funeral was therapeutic and peaceful.

M Dwarf Alchemist (Vivisectionist/Chirurgeon) 5 HP 39:39 | AC:17 T:12 FF:15 | CMD 17 | F:+6 R:+6 W:+3 | Init: +2 Per: +7

As I was writing my post (first with alchemist’s fire) I reread the crafting rules (that's why in my post I say it's not alchemical fire). Can someone tell me where my math (or reasoning) is wrong. To craft something over the course of a week, you take the price in silver and compare it to the craft check x the item’s DC. If this product beats the price in silver, success! If it’s double, you’re done in half the time; triple a third of the time. Now alchemist’s fire is 200 sp. the DC is 20. Vrunyar only needs a 10 to craft the alchemist’s fire over the course of a week. Not bad since he has a +9 Craft (alchemy). To do it in one day, the product of the craft check and the DC gets divided by 7, the number of days in the week. That makes sense. However the craft check roll is essentially impossible. It needs to be 70, because (70x20)/7 = 200. Where’s my error? Has this been addressed in the forums?

Craft rules are a little odd.

As a going-away present, I received two unrelated murder cases last week. Huzzah. Might be a little sparse as I work these.

Okay, I am all set to leave Homicide. Time for more posting! I took several days off in the coming week, so I should have plenty of time. Once I promote, I should still be able to post a fair amount from my phone in my free time.

Glad to hear it, Barcas. I look forward to some smooth sailing and regular posts, to see where the story takes us.

It's been a busy several months, but it has paid off. I am excited about the coming adventures, starting with Merrill and some other cool NPCS I am planning on adding soon.

Sorry for the long absence, I am just now settling into Homicide and getting caught up on my cases so I should be able to post more frequently.

My belated condolences Ollivor.

Congrats again Barcas on the promotion and getting your first option on training locations.

My promotion is tomorrow! Post will be up after the celebration.

DM Barca's, is the area we are fighting in meet the requirements for the entangle spell?

It is a grassy area, so yes.

Vrunyar- don't forget Inspire Courage is up. It'll add 3 points of damage thanks to your crit!

Hey Barcus, My AC was 20 the last time Guard#1 attacked with his cutlass , Guard#2 fell and I lost crowd control which causes it to drop by 1 down to 19. The last attack would be a miss, or am I adding something wrong again. If the attack is good, then the 5 damage would put Thorn at -2

A 24 hits either way. And 5 damage knocks Thorn to 0 hit points, which is staggered.

M Dwarf Alchemist (Vivisectionist/Chirurgeon) 5 HP 39:39 | AC:17 T:12 FF:15 | CMD 17 | F:+6 R:+6 W:+3 | Init: +2 Per: +7

I had Thorn at −2 hp as well. I don’t mind if he's at 0 though ;)

Not that big of a deal, but I wondered if Vrunyar might know that Aaron needs inflict wounds to heal. Shortly after they first met, Aaron was going to discard an empty vial. Vrunyar claimed it. At the time I wanted to ask if Vrunyar could do a knowledge (arcana) or craft (alchemy) to see if he could identify what the potion was. I realize a drop or two isn’t much to go on, but it’s a fantasy.

Male Elf Barbarian (Urban Barbarian) 2 / Fighter (Archer) 2 /Sorcerer (Wildblood=Sage Cross Blood=Aquatic) | HP 35/35 | AC:16 T:14 FL:12 | CMD 20 | F:+7 R:+4 W:+2 | Init +4 Perception:+8

Sorry, I was tired last night and did not see the 24, I only observed the 18 in parentheses on the roll not the bonus included, that's my mistake. Either way I will get a post up later for sure now that I have had some sleep.

Halfling Bard (Sea Singer) 2/Rogue (Knife Master) 3 | HP 34/34 | AC 20 | T 16 | FF 14 | CMD 16 | Fort +4 | Ref +12 | Will +7 (+2 vs fear, +4 vs. air and water effects, or being knocked prone) | Init +4 | Perc +12

FYI - I'll be at a local con starting tonight through the weekend, so my posting will be minimal to nonexistent for that time.

Male Elf Barbarian (Urban Barbarian) 2 / Fighter (Archer) 2 /Sorcerer (Wildblood=Sage Cross Blood=Aquatic) | HP 35/35 | AC:16 T:14 FL:12 | CMD 20 | F:+7 R:+4 W:+2 | Init +4 Perception:+8

So What is the plan, How many people can Vrunyar heal in 1 minute, Do we take the Lighthouse or Stay and keep the Town. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions!

Halfling Bard (Sea Singer) 2/Rogue (Knife Master) 3 | HP 34/34 | AC 20 | T 16 | FF 14 | CMD 16 | Fort +4 | Ref +12 | Will +7 (+2 vs fear, +4 vs. air and water effects, or being knocked prone) | Init +4 | Perc +12

Doran can heal some also, and both John and Doran can use the wand of CLW. Doran is about to give Aaron his version of a potion of CMW, which should help him a lot.

Then I think we need to take the ship and get out of here, taking the town does us no good.

We are in the home stretch for your freedom! One final obstacle!

I should have made that guy tougher. Single opponent fights are tough to get right. Make them too tough and they'll wipe the floor with the PCs. Make them not tough enough and it's over immediately. Rolling a 1 on Initiative hurt him a lot, though - basically had 12 actions before his second action.
