I actually wanted to, but as far as I know you can't stop a crit. My normal hit without the crit would have been for 13 damage.. enough to put him in dying but possibily save him. I diden't expect the crit tbh. That was one of the reasons why I tried to play it safe without going for a power attack.

Doran Tidewrack |

A guy with 3 hp is going down if a greatsword hits him, crit or no. But it played nicely with the "No quarter" and John's joy at facing fate with a sword in his hand.
Edit: just re-read your post - you did have some chance of just knocking him out, so wasn't an unreasonable move.

![]() |

Yea.. I thought about trying the nonlethal but the -4 would have made it very risky and this guy has already shown himself to be pretty dangerous. It would have been better to question him.. hrm I suppose in hindsight I could have dropped my greatsword, drawn my cutlass and then attacked him with a 1hand blow, but I diden't consider that route. Like you said, I think it rolled itself well into the situation but I'll try to be more careful next time (if you guys want).

DM Barcas |

Well, guys, Synthia's been having real life issues and has to drop out. I sent Deathquaker a message to let her know as Alternate #1.
Beshra, sorry for letting you languish there. Since I'm obviously waiting to get the storylines merged, I have to slow the happenings down on the Wormwood while the Empty Lighthouse chase keeps going. Once I get everyone in the same place, I should be able to keep everyone on the same pace.

Doran Tidewrack |

Sorry to hear we'll be losing Synthia, and that real life has intruded. Hate when it does that.
On a happier note, I'm in another PbP with Deathquaker and she's a very reliable poster and a good writer.

Doran Tidewrack |

Any word back from Deathquaker, or any other alternates if you've gone to them?
I assume our delay here is due to RL rearing its head, rather than a lack of response there, but just curious.

Wynifrid |

This is DQ. I am in, I was away visiting family for Easter (which Barcas knew--and actually you should've known, Doran, from the other game :) Thanks for the kind words, BTW.). I am finishing up the alias -- and we need to chat about how my character gets folded into the party.
I am in the process of reading through the thread--if there's anything in particular I should pay attention to/take note of please let me know. It's always hard to get thrown in the middle so advice is appreciated.

Doran Tidewrack |

Yoicks! My curious inquiry has somehow been interpreted as much more cranky than I intended. My apologies.
In any case, we're rolling again. I agree, DQ, that jumping into the middle of a campaign can be a challenge. Fortunately, I believe Barcas is about to bring three ships, and their storylines, crashing together, at which point our various PCs will all likely suffer horribly, but get to meet eat other at last. So you won't be joining a full group where all the roles and relationships are long established, which is what I have found challenging in the PbP realm.
As an added bonus, this campaign has smart, thoughtful players who write well and punctuate often, which can't be said of every single player in our other PbP.

DM Barcas |

So, I'm thinking that Wynifred (who, IIRC, lacks a last name by choice) should be aboard the Hellsmouth as an enslaved rower. How would you like to integrate your story thus far with that? The Chelaxians tend to make prisoners of war into slaves, or purchase slaves from third parties, but they don't tend to attack merchant ships directly.
The other new player, my friend Mike Arrington, will also be on the Hellsmouth as a captured POW forced to be a rower.

Wynifrid |

No worries, Doran, I didn't think you were being cranky but I did want to clarify why I hadn't responded right away. The reference to "kind words" was to your truly kind words about my writing in an earlier post. :)
Wynifrid, Wyn for short, has no last name by choice but is sometimes called "the Peacekeeper." I may rename the alias if that seems cooler/more appropriate.
For adjusting her backstory to becoming an enslaved rower, the easiest solution would be to have the boat she ran onto chasing the thief was the Hellsmouth. She gets knocked out, and when she comes to she's chained to a pair of oars (perhaps as punishment for apparently stowing away). If that doesn't work I am adaptable--if the ship she ran onto was captured by the Hellsmouth that would also work.

DM Barcas |

The Hellsmouth is a Chelaxian warship that normally is the strongest point of the blockade at the Arch of Aroden. While they will take prisoners of captured military vessels, they wouldn't take prisoners of a smuggler. (They would be sent for judgment, most likely.) They would, however, purchase labor from a "legal" slaver. That would be the best way to get her aboard that ship.
Also, would you put things in your character sheet in the HeroLab format?

DeathQuaker RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8 |

I would prefer to be captured than sold. I am willing for plot reasons to have been enslaved on the ship, but I do not want to play someone who was a slave before that point for any length of time. That is not my character. Since you felt both of my suggestions are not viable, can you please suggest a way that would be possible?
Regards the HL template:
What I am going to do when I edit my profile: under one spoiler, I'm going to put the HL version. Under another spoiler I am going to put "DQ version." One for your easy reading, one for mine (it really confuses me when I have combat abilities listed WAY at the bottom because they're "special abilities" when they intuitively to me should be under "offense", and then I forget/overlook half the stuff my character can do).
Also:
I am reading through the recruitment and discussion threads for houserules and the like, but they are a bit scattered through the thread. Could you please let me know if there's anything I need to know? I saw that we're using hero points, and that there's a specific format for posting combat. Anything else?
Thanks.
ETA: I also noticed while editing Wyn's profile that I had my math screwy on the AC and offensive abilities. It should be correct now, but you might want to read through.

Beshra Bleak |

Welcome aboard DeathQuaker/Wynifrid, look forward to playing with you :)
And wow, that is quite a worrying situation Beshra finds herself in! Thankfully I think some decent rolling might just save her, but being virtually useless physically and still trying to hide the extent of her magics puts her in a vulnerable position.

Thorn Syndergaard |

Hello to all! Thank you for allowing me to join the group and experience my first play by post game of pathfinder. I am a fast learner and I will try my best to help enhance the story.

Doran Tidewrack |

Happy to have you aboard, Thorn. I had a character by that name in an old, brutal RPG called Pirates & Plunder. May yours fare better!

Why does everyone keep mentioning my sword dripping blood?
"John wiped the blood off of the blade on Solouman’s trousers before he hobbled out of the galley with a sense of urgency."
Letting blood drip all over a ship is hardly appropriate.. nor sanitary. Don’t get me wrong, John took a certain sense of appreciation at finally being in combat and protecting his friends, but he’s not a cold blooded killer. Just a wounded marine who wants to protect his shipmates.

Doran Tidewrack |

@John - for what it's worth, I wrote "dripping," then remembered you had wiped it off on Solouman's clothes, and changed it to "smeared." I noted you had made an effort to clean the blade, but thought your sense of urgency might have caused some to be left behind, so I took a little license with it.

![]() |

That sounds pretty fair. I would think cleaning blood off of something like a greatsword would take a good ammount of effort.

![]() |

*smiles* Ugh.. don't even want to think about the field day that would go into something like that.

Thorn Syndergaard |

Should I roll for damage from the lashes or can I figure after 9 years of lashes that his back has toughened and scared over?

Doran Tidewrack |

Just wanted to let everyone know that this weekend I will be leaving to go here for work. I will be gone 2-3 weeks, and my internet connection will be very spotty indeed, and I’ll be on a very different time zone as well.
I will post when I’m able, but if I’m holding things up, feel free to bot me as needed.

Doran Tidewrack |

Nice post, John. I like the detailed description of the sea and sky, and the brooding feel over all.
And what's happened to Iakob? Nothing for two weeks and then he drops in to tell us he's not posting? Sheesh.

![]() |

Thanks Doran! I had a computer crash when I was halfway through and had to go back and write it again. =/ I'm glad because I think this version turned out better. I gotta say as the Empty Lighthouse, Wormwood and Hellsmouth draw closer together I am really excited to see how this all plays out.

Doran Tidewrack |

Well, I'm glad you stuck with the post, in spite of the comp troubles. I've taken to writing my posts in Word and then copying them over to the boards, I lose a lot less of my writing that way, with Paizo's site being as unstable as it is. And I agree, I'm eager to see how it all comes together, and will be glad to have our whole crew in one place - though I'm hoping that place is the Lighthouse, as the other two are too much like ships from Doran's past.

![]() |

*nod* thats what I usually do but due to the crash I lost the word doc in mid progress. I agree with you, though about the Lighthouse being a good ship, though my knee is acting up so theres some darkness on the horizon.

DM Barcas, What is the date that Captain Jonas gave his speech on and that the spy was revealed? I'm working on another letter to Alima and I like to put stuff like that in. Also did the captain ever make any mention of Iakob and John's question about tactics?

DM Barcas |

So this is a little complicated. Let me know if you have any questions about the zones.
This is the first combat for a lot of us together, so let's go over the rules. Remember that we are going to follow the template for combat quite strictly; it is supplied again below. I'm not strict about Initiative between allies. For readied actions or predicted attacks of opportunity, just let me know what the values are and I will roll them for you. Remember that I trust you with the AC and saves of the enemy so that you can write your own hit or miss narrative.
==============TEMPLATE FOR COMBAT==================
Round 1, Initiative 20, Location
hp x/x; AC xx/xxT/xxFF; CMD xx; +xF/+xR/+xW (These values are after your action, if you charge or fight defensively or whatever.)
Skill Check (if necessary) If rolling multiple skill checks, put them in chronological order or requested, or alphabetical if simultaneous and not requested.
FA: Free action here (if necessary)
SwA: Swift action here(if necessary)
MA: Move Action here
SA: Standard Action here If it is an attack, put the weapon and the target, then roll. (FRA the code for is full-round action.)
Descriptive text explaining above rolls and actions in exacting, brutal detail. Free actions for speech aren't necessary to point out.

Well, this looks pretty dam epic! To echo Doran's thoughts, any ideas on numbers would help. DMB will you be handling the placement of the NPC's on the Empty Lighthouse? One last question, you state the Ranged attacks have cover unless there are no enemies in any zone between the shooter and target. How does this apply for example to people in the Stern Rigging shooting down on people on the Stern Top Deck?

DM Barcas |

Yes, there is simply pulling. I have a story planned out for Wyn and Thorn as well. A moment will arise.
And I will place the crew members.
Characters in the rigging zones treat all topdeck zones as adjacent in terms of adjudicating cover. (However, if either the rigging or the target zones are mixed, the target still has cover.)
