@Ollivor - Vrunyar did fail his save, so he should be sickened, like Doran over there on the cot. Go for it, Ollivor!

Synthia Candle |

So. Glad. To. Be. Out. Of. Hold!
If Synthia's not wearing her armor, I believe her climb bonus should be bumped up 1 (along with all her other Dex and Str based skills, right?). So that would have been a +6? Not that it would have made any difference on that climb, but it does make a difference on this Sleight of Hand check she's about to try. So is she wearing her lamellar leather armor?

btw, speaking from real life experience in the Coast Guard. There's nothing worse then having a hangover and going to sea. Between the headaches and the tiredness from drinking and the rocking of the ship.. its terrible. Still, a portcall is a portcall, and when you know it will be weeks before you see land again, everyone's quick to tip one back.

And I was writing from a slightly different perspective - I've got some weird little stomach and head bug, picked up from a friend who was recently travelling in Thailand and Vietnam, so it's very alien to my system. It's making my head spin and hurt, and just caused me to cancel a night out with some friends tonight - so I feel like I've already got a hangover.

It's been fun, and I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the adventure develop.
@DM Barcas: John left Alima with 81g 7s. What's a fair estimate of how long that should hold out if she is careful?

Vrunyar Magmabeard wrote:Pirates! The thought comes to him after a moment. What if Yennard’s family attacks the ship? That will be like finding the ore you want in your neighbor’s tunnel.Or like rain on your wedding day.
Or good advise that you just didn't take?

Everything has been wonderful so far, can't wait to meet up - planning to read through the thread in one shot then :)
On an unrelated note I'm planning my next book -not at a level where I'd consider trying to get published yet, but working on it - and wondered if anyone would care to give me any feedback?
Very early outline...
Protagonist is being trained in the control of a bound spirit by his noble family in their country Manor. Nation is a virtual theocracy ruled by the Church in all but name, but governed by a council of nobles who hold great power.
Men with Shield shaped masks, burn his Manor because his family are sorcerers. He escapes and vows to destroy the church. To do so he decides to form a new religion using his powers to create miracles.
But unbeknown to the protagonist his bound spirit is the soul of his twin sister killed in the womb to give him the gift of sorcery. His powers are essentially derived from a tethered ghost that he has been taught to control by using emotions as a lash.
Mainly I'd like to know if it sounds interesting, of there are any elements that put you off and if you think it's worth pursuing or I ought to go back to the drawing board.
Had to mull this over but the more I think about it the more I love it. Go for it!

Beshra Bleak |

Lol, I'm about 200 pages in now on my first draft - I expect to do at least a dozen. It's been an unusual experience as my protagonist is something of a git, mostly because he has essentially been taught to abuse the spirit to control it and has to an extent transferred that behaviour to the majority of his real world relationships. I'm struggling more with my second POV a female embalmer who becomes a poisoner after her teenage son is hanged as a traitor.

So, I have to ask 'cause I don't know; How many men would normally crew a ship like the one's we're discussing? The Wormwood, The Empty Lighthouse and The Righteous Eagle and the Carrion's Maw?
More importantly; How many men would take part in a boarding action like the one on the Carrion's Maw? I frankly have no idea.

![]() |

That's pretty realistic. It really depends on if it was a true naval vessel or a merchant / privateer. Size plays into it significantly as well as operating range and resupply ability.

Doran Tidewrack |

I think John's right, but I expect the Eagle and the Maw would have slightly bigger crews, as they'd have sailing crews, who would also fight, and also would likely have soldiers, with minimal sailing responsibilities. There isn't a perfect parallel to the age of sail in our world, but they'd often have a crew of well over 100 to sail the ship and then a platoon of marines - more trained to fight than to sail - and their numbers would vary depending on the size of the ship also.
As I think on it, though, the large crew numbers on ships during the Napoleonic Wars, say, was they needed gun crews for the cannon, as well as a full crew to sail the ship, so even with all watches working, they needed a lot of men. Cannon crews would be less of an issue on Pathfinder ships, I expect, so the crews would be smaller.
Edit: I just looked at the S&S Player's Guide, which gives numbers for the crew sizes for different ships. A "sailing ship" which runs quite a size range, would need a minimum crew of 20 (which seems very low if anyone is ever going to sleep), a "warship" a crew of 80, though that includes 60 rowers.

Speaking of cannons, while I understand that gunpowder is emerging, the Eagle and the Maw were both described as having cannons so I think your right Doran. Certainly, Chelish and Andoran naval vessels would have a platoon of marines, sailors or the like assigned to them. I think the Maw and Eagle would have been closer to 150ish

DM Barcas |

So, I was explaining the game a few weeks ago to a friend and co-worker who plays Pathfinder. We used to work patrol together, then I left for an investigative assignment and eventually made it to Homicide. He's now following me like a stalker, as he is in the same assignment that I used to work (which is essentially a uniformed, station-based, de-specialized detective) and hopes to put in for Homicide next time we post an opening. He expressed some interest, so I decided that this game wasn't quite crowded enough. We hashed out a character concept that might work in this game, though made pains not to step on anyone's toes. With a few passes over the history to make the themes mesh with the crew's, I think he is ready. This is the character he came up with. Tell me what you guys think. Mechanically, he is an urban barbarian archer (though he admits that he will have to take some fighter or ranger levels for bonus feats). His character is an elf raised by Ulfen rangers who was captured by Cheliax in a sea battle and forced to work as a slave in their galleys.

Doran Tidewrack |

Sounds good, always good to have more angry, escaped slaves on our side when we're sailing Chelish waters. I assume he'll be on the Lighthouse, rather than one of the folks forced to crew on the Wormwood?

Doran Tidewrack |

I'm sure you're right - read them in the wrong order to come to that conclusion.
Wait a minute! The Hellsmouth can't possibly catch us!

Doran Tidewrack |

@DM Barcas - I don't know if you pay close attention to such matters, but today is GM's day - so have a happy one! Thank you for a fun game.
Back to scratching backstays and whistling up a wind, so the Hellsmouth doesn't catch up...

@DM Barcas - Looks good! I don't mind haveing another character in the party!

Vrunyar Magmabeard |

An impressive character! One question, mechanically, why is his speed 20 feet? I thought barbarians got a +10 feet to speed. Where is my error or lack of understanding?
Looking forward to the two groups meeting.

By the way, Steven Helt from my Kingmaker game is in the RPG Superstar Top 4. You should vote for him in the final round. Definitely.

Excellent update Barcas, I am going to do some thinking on my post and get back to it tomorrow. As for Steven, I have been voted for him each round. His floodwalker was excellent and I liked his dungeon. I hope his adventure submission knocks it out of the park!

Doran Tidewrack |

Really excellent post, Ollivor! The dragon dream as you lie bleeding was clever and funny. Glad you cried out, so we've got a chance to hear you and do for Solouman!

Thanks! As I mentioned, it doesn't have to mean a darn thing, but I figured it was a colorful way to fill out the post. As for crying out, well, he was told NOT to speak, and Ollie strikes me as sometimes contrary in the extreme. :)

I may be a bit absent for the next few days, particularly Monday and Tuesday. Taking my son to his mountain bike race out of town this weekend and then, well, playing hooky to go skiing. Will check in when I can, and post from my phone or something if that's possible - maybe from a chairlift...
