Y'know, I gotta say, this really is weirding me out slightly. When there are slowdowns in other games, you say, "Well, somebody's mother-in-law must be visiting," or "Ah, the GMs carpal tunnel must be flaring up," or just a generic "real life got in the way."
When DM Barcas doesn't post for a little while, on the other hand, it probably means someone was killed. Yeesh.

Doran Tidewrack |

Hmmm, I hadn't really thought of it that way.
I do hazmat emergency reponse work for US EPA - so next time there's a big natural disaster in the US (particularly a hurricane), I may be away for a bit. But that's not quite so grim.

All I've got is that we're going to a writing retreat in Mexico this weekend for a week, but other than the travel days (Friday and then a week from Saturday) I'm supposed to have 'net access.
When I don't post it just means I'm being lazy. No public service involved!

DM Barcas |

Murder! Actually I am off today because I am on weekend rotation til February 16th, but I am home with the rambunctious baby. Hopefully I will get to updating, though I've been waiting on Beshra's response to Sandara Quinn - one of the best NPCs in the AP, though she is a cleric of Besmara in the original and was changed to differentiate her from Beshra. On the Lighthouse (a name I hope y'all like), I am mostly letting y'all get to know one another sans NPC.

For the sake of ease...
DM Barcas, if I use detect thoughts on someone, with no visible or auditory elements since its a spell-like ability do people know? I've had previous DMs say that since you get a will save you know something is happening, etc. I don't believe there is any rule that supports this, but I can see the point that it would be hard to mentally pit your will against something if you could not feel it in someway. Of course whether it can be felt or not makes a big difference to its utility, if someone feels you invading their mind with no idea what exactly you are doing they are likely to attack.

I'm dealing with some stuff at work right now that was unexpected. I'll reply after work Doran.

Beshra Bleak |

Oh I see, well thats a virtual auto success for anyone who has spellcraft, which is a bit disappointing. I mean if they saw someone actually casting it the DC would be higher than that at 17. I was thinking you meant 10 + the abilities will save DC - which is currently 16. I'm not sure how it makes sense to tie it to Beshra's will save?
I'll see how it plays out and hopefully get a feel for it.

@Vrunyar - I know you were asking Barcas, not me, about the spoilered letter in your post, but I have to say I thought it was great to include it. It seems we are all putting up pretty long posts, so whether it was spoilered or not doesn't matter to me - it's the context it gives, the personality it shows, the relationship it reveals - those were excellent. Just spell "accident" right next time, since it appears in bold at the very top of your post. :P

Hey Doran, I made a mistake on my Sense Motive roll. I Added a +2 when I should have added a +7, next time I see you I'll add some sort of inner monologue about your story not quite adding up.

Makes sense - the story will likely come out gradually anyway, but +7 Sense Motive at first level deserves to have succeeded at that roll.

Packing has begun, and we're up early here to head to the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati Airport and from there on to Houston, then Guanajuato/León, then by car to San Miguel de Allende, where I'll be for a week (but with internet access, or at least so I'm told).
I might be able to sneak a post in tomorrow from an airport someplace, but it also might be Saturday before I'm back.

Doran Tidewrack |

Awesome, I love San Miguel, though I haven't been there in years. Beautiful place.
Buen viaje!

Excellent post Iakob! When I read it and you described the scars on your arm I totally thought of Mistborn. It even sounds like the pits!

Doran Tidewrack |

I agree about your post, Iakob. I thought you were going to attack Rawkins there for a moment. A nice tour of the inside of your head, that.
And you're both drunks? Uh-oh.

Doran Tidewrack |

@Doran, thanks for the spell check. It'd be fun to have an "acid net" spell mishap causing an accident.
Glad you didn't take it as negatively-intended. I was raised by an editor and I have to restrain myself with great regularity from pointing out errors (not in your posts specifically, but everywhere, it's a bit maddening).
Your comment makes me think, though - incorrect spelling is so common in PbP posts, it would be great to have a spell-checker here. But it's lots more code they'd have to plug in, and there are so many odd names and words, it probably wouldn't work. I write a lot of my longer posts in word before I post them, I could use the checker there if I felt a need. I just wish folks in some of my other PbPs felt the need...

Anybody know how to edit a post from yesterday? The line in the header reads "Flag | List | Reply" omitting the "delete" and "edit" choices.
I like typing out my posts in Bean or Libre but often the html stuff I'll type after I've cut and pasted the text into the message box on paizo.com. That's what happened last night.

Google Chrome has a good spell checker. I use it on my desktop. It's not perfect but it helps.

I'm pretty sure you only get the "Delete" and "Edit" options for an hour after you post, so you won't be able to do anything with yesterday's posts.

Hadn't ever thought of a browser having a spell-checker, but Chrome would if any. May be a useful thing for one of my sons, I'll check it out.

I'm updating the NPC gallery on the campaign tab. Let me know if you want to see any additions. I usually don't add background people until they've been met or at least seriously mentioned.
That looks like a very useful list, thanks for putting it together. The NPC that comes to mind from Doran's backstory is Makris Barrow, his enemy from his pirating days - but you may not have plans for him, or not for a while, so I don't know if you feel he needs to be on that list.

Morning DM Barcas:
I really like the list. I was looking over the same thing you did for your Kingmaker and I think it will be really useful in the long run.
Two NPC's of note:
Lord Cornelius Havershaw seems like he should be a given on the list. As to the second, would John and Iakob know who the captain of the Carron's Maw was? I had listed a guy named Typhus Scalp-Taker, but it could easly be changed.

![]() |

@Iakob/DM Barcas: I was thinking this would be a good chance for Iakob to come to John's house and meet Alima and Farah. Who knows how long it might be before we have a chance to interact with them again. DM Barcas, I'm not sure how much interaction you like to have with the NPC's. From what I saw in your kingmaker, the players will occasionally dictate their actions. Just let me know how best I should play this.

Doran Tidewrack |

Okay. Hope I did all that right.
It looks right to me. You didn't take the +2 from Beshra's aid, which is correct since she failed in her Aid Another roll. And your bonuses all look right. I think next time you should try to roll higher numbers.
Helpful halfling signing off.

My wife found out that she got a promotion today! As a result I was not able to make my intended post, since we decided to celebrate. I have a good post planned, but I won't be able to get to it until tomorrow night after I'm off work. Have a great night!
