Riff the Goblin |
Welcome, Riff! Things tend to be a little slow around here during the holiday season but I'd say we'll see an uptick in games being offered once we get into the New Year :)
It makes sense, really. Figured I would at least get into the recruitment thread so people know I am looking!
Scott Horseshield |
A medium-sized half-elf walks in with a black cat-like creature silently walking alongside. Their eyes scan the room for a moment before coming to the jobs board. Looking up at the goblin as he declares his station and position, Scott goes up attempting to mimic his mannerisms with an apparent social awkwardness.
"Scott Horseshield, one of the Druids of Starstone Island of the Animal Circle reporting for duty!"
He then pets the top of the panther's head, and for a moment Scott seems to relax.
Hi, I am new to this format but I have played PF2S F2F before. I am looking forward to rolling with you guys! Thanks for having me.

Well, Finally took the leap and went into 2e. No stranger to first edition, but dang, man, did things change. Can't wait to try out this edition.
Question: Is it just me, or is character creation harder? Or is just because I'm so new at it. I totally had to get into Herolab just to wrap my head around creating my alchemist.
Pip Hip Hooray |
I found character creation complex, but definitely not harder than 1e. For everything except a core game, I required HeroLab to create and level my characters. In 2E, I am doing that leveling by hand. The only reason why it seems complicated is that I read every single feat tree to the end that I was considering in order to fully understand my decisions.
I found that it helped to have a specific vision when creating a character, because that made all my decisions easier. Pip's concept is that she is a well-educated lawyer, but she came from a family that raised badgers in Absalom. To help her family, she started learning the full complexity of Absalom's badger laws (of which there are shockingly many in Paizo canon, so this is kind of an in joke) and then became fascinated enough with the law that she pursued that instead of the family business. But she still knows a thing or two about animals too. Pip works for the Envoy's Alliance, where she likes to rescue pathfinders in trouble.
I have not decided yet whether Pip is going to take the Pathfinder archetype or go straight bard when she gets to Level 2. I am appreciating Play-by-Post, where I feel she gets the opportunity to explore her character more fully while I get the chance to learn more about her.
I already have my concept for my next character, as yet unbuilt. I'm sort of hesitating on the chassis because it kind of screams Oracle, and the playtest version was really punitive. I like real curses, but I want them to offer upsides as well as downsides, and besides the real thing won't come out until July, and I will need a second character before then. So I may make a different sort of bard, and just play with bard variants. Or I may go with one of the divine sorcerers. Whatever choices I make will be grounded on the character concept, and then I will build it forward!
Oh and to keep this more in line with recruitment, Pip is also looking for work again.

PlayDis Con 2020 is one of our online conventions that we help organize. This allows players and GM's to run the multi-table Specials / earn player and GM boons that those hear normally wouldn't be able to earn without going to a larger face to face convention.

@Riff and Scott
I've got two open spaces for Quest #3 Grehunde's Gorget subtier 1-2 available.
Quests are shorter than Scenarios. Designed for around an hour face-to-face, they seem to take about 2 to 3 weeks play-by-post. So they offer about 1/4 the reward of Scenarios since they take about 1/4 the time.
We'll most likely be doing Quest #4 afterwards if you want to stick around.
Head over here if you're interested.
We're starting Monday 1/13.

A man in his late thirties comes in, eyes the crowd and a smile forms on his lips. Quite boisterous, he raps a table while taking everyone in.
"Hello, friends! May I get any of you a drink? A bit crowded in here, huh? Oh, where are my manners? You may call me Hoyt. Pardon my intrusion, but did my ears hear something about a trip? Splendid! Now, if you don't mind me being so forward, perhaps you could spare a berth for someone trained in the medical arts. I'm quite competent I assure you. If not, I'll be around if you change your mind."
I should point out that while I have played PF2 f2f since October, this is the first time I'm playing by post and first time playing society games.

I've got some open spaces in my Playdis Con 2020 table 146 for Escaping the Grave if anyone is interested in trying out Play-By-Discord. You certainly don't need any experience with Discord to join, just a willingness to learn a few new things. :)

Six at 144, 2 at 146. Maybe myself or the other bard should switch over, make it 5 and 3 - if you don't get more people by Sunday.

That would be wonderful, even just one swapping over would get us a legal table and everyone would get to run.
There are also a chunk of available options for other tables too if my scenario isn't your bag and even for Starfinder (those crazy space laser pew-pew'ers).

I wanted to try a quest, to discover this medium. I play PbP on Paizo forums, is it any different?
I'm only finding small differences but it seems that most of the games over there consist of a lot of new players to Play-By-Discord so there is a decent bit of explanation as the games start mustering.

Hi, I'm fairly new to the game. Haven't played Pathfinder for long and haven't ever played PbP before so I'm not exactly sure how this all works. Kind of wondering the same thing as @SuperBidi: How do I subscribe to a game? Do I just contact the GM/DM? Sign up... Should I sign up to the discord channel? If someone could just teach the newbie the ropes I'd appreciate it. lol
Redelia |
There are two separate questions I'm seeing which are sort of mixed up together.
1. How do I join a PlayDis Con game?
You would add yourself to the sign-up google sheet. Then you need to join the Discord server where the game is happening. You should try to find the table for your game and post in the ooc channel for the game. If you have trouble with the last step, there are plenty of people who would help on the servers.
2. How do I join a non-convention game?
These are recruited more informally here on this thread. You can either wait for a GM to post a game you want to join, or else post here a game you'd like a GM to run and see if someone volunteers.

This is a good starting point for signing up for games right now so I'll quote it again.
Generally speaking signing up for games comes from two places. Open Recruitment (in this thread of the *Cottonseed PFS PbP Lodge which is for PFS2 games) or Online Conventions like those mentioned above.
*There are other lodges for PFS1 and Starfinder, Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge and Flaxseed Station respectively
Open Recruitment is simple. A GM will say "recruiting for X game, do this to apply" and you just follow instructions. Sometimes (not always) a player or players will put in a request for a game and a GM will start one off that.
Online Conventions have their own recruitment document, usually on google sheets. The link quoted above called PlayDis Con 2020 Sign ups takes you to the front page of said document. Navigate the tabs at the bottom to get to the player signup section and then just fill in your information in an open slot for a game you wish to play in that con. If you go that route you are welcome to come back here for the next step.
_______________
TLDR: Posted just the basics of signing up for a game right now.
I completely understand that there is a lot of information that gets dumped on new players and it can seem incredibly daunting. It took me a bit to get a feel for how stuff works so don't worry if you don't have it all figured out right away. Plus, everyone starts at different levels of experience so some things for some players may seem simple and others complicated. It's all good, a wide range of players is what makes this community excellent. I still don't know half of what a good chunk of the community knows, so I've got a lot to learn too.

Edit: And Redelia just ninja'd my massive post (I tried to keep it simple arg!) with the bare bones version, lol. As I said, I've got a lot to learn. :D

Appreciate the help! Thank you, all. I did sign up to both Discords that were listed -- although still lost and confused as to where everything is (I've never seen so many chat channels on a disc server before lol). Seriously, I think I signed up on one of the google sign up sheets correctly... Nothing like an rpg game to make you feel like an idiot. :P

We've all had that feeling on occasion. :)
At least on Roll for Combat, there's a 'new people come here' channel that may be your best bet to ask for someone to help you find your channel. It would also be quite appropriate to @ your gm to ask for their help. You should be able to find their name on the signup spreadsheet.

Once you've signed up on the google sheet, don't forget to drop by the OOC chat channel of your table. Some GMs are already asking for Reporting Sheets to be filled out, your character sheet and avatar in order to create tokens.

This should make you feel better: I signed up to play my first PFS game at a convention. I failed to register for the convention properly. Then I failed to sign up for the games properly. I didn't bring any dice, minis, or even a pencil. I just showed up empty handed and - long story - not having showered after I had been skiing all day the previous day. And then I learned that my home game didn't teach me half the rules that I should have known for PFS play.
The people there helped me have a great time despite me basically crit failing every single logistical aspect I could crit fail at. (Arguably me not knowing the rules was only a failure and not a crit failure.)

It should also make you feel better that, with that inauspicious start, I can personally say, he's now both a great PbP player and GM as I'm both running a game for him and playing in one.
Just remember, you don't have to learn it all at once, just be willing to learn. There are a ton of people on these forums who will go out of their way to help you get it all down and right.

Again, appreciate all the help and advice. I did go to Roll for Combat and asked for help there and got in on a table that isn't full just yet; introduced myself to the GM and asked if he might be willing to look over my character sheet for me and give me some feedback (make sure I didn't misinterpret the rules on how many skills, feats, etc.) I could take)....
Everyone is being super nice and that's a great help. Some parts of this I get and don't have a problem with but other parts... I'm like, "You have a PhD, this should not confuse you...." and, still, there I sit, dumbfounded.

But do you have a PhD in Pathfinder Play-by-Post?
(Because if you do, that would be cool.)
By the time you get through your first adventure (and probably well before) you'll be ready to teach others.

Not to be a downer but to make sure your expectations are realistic, not everyone is going to be nice and helpful. Don't let them get to you.
I don't know what your PhD is in, but if it was lab-based, you're probably familiar with choosing a lab. All the friendly people reach out to the rotation students and it's all roses and unicorns. All the grumps stay in their lairs and you don't meet them until after you've joined a lab.

Yup but in my experience there are few grumps hiding out on the boards here. Though admittedly I'm very good at forgetting the negative.

lol No, I've already met one or two ppl who... (how can I put this nicely) were apparently raised in barns - and that's an insult to farm animals everywhere but, overall, my experience hasn't been troll city which is a nice change of pace. As for the degree.... no, not a lab field (most academic fields don't do labs btw). No, my work was (I'm retired) in the social sciences and humanities; hence, the people would argue I worked in a field related to this.... Cultural Studies (the academic field I was trained in) is considered a fluff field) and, while my area of expertise is law and public policy, most people think of comic books, pop culture and, well, D&D...
