They came from different places, different times, perhaps even different worlds. But each was sure they had died... so why are they here now, alive, in this strange place, and why do these hourglasses slowly empty, what event does their last dribbles of sand portend?

We can always eat the excess donkeys - less chow needed for the remaining donkeys and less chow needed for us. A win-win situation (except for the dead donkey).

Thank you for waiting and/or botting me. You deserve the truth, and the truth is I lost my job -- in part because I got a little obsessed with the fun I was having here.

I have prided myself on never dropping out of a game, but that ends today. I'm close to landing a new job, but even so I need to devote myself to it for quite some time before I'll feel comfortable again.

So, I'm sorry, but I have to leave you. You'll know I'm back when I post again looking for a new game, but until then I'm going 100% silent.

Again, my apologies for abandoning you. I know that you'll understand. It has been fun, and I treasure the adventures we've had together.

Consider this a friendly request to replace me or move on without me. Good luck and have fun!

Ok, in that case, do we want to re-recruit now that there's a supply of locals? Assuming our other two remaining players are still around.

Well there is supposed to be 5 of us right? Palakka, Grim, Cale, Me and Lilandra. 5 is sustainable if we drive our post rate up. I suppose we could recruit some elves if there are a couple folks out there but would a group of 7 be too big? I guess we were almost that size already.

I don't want to lose this game, I like this character and I want to now pout. That said we seem to have....two active players at this point? mdt any thoughts? At one point you mentioned recruiting now I am wondering if you think it is worth it?

Honestly I'm not sure at this point. I think we have 3ish. It's been very hard to keep it going honestly, people drop in and out. Plus you're finally in a civilized area (everyone avoided the others).

At this point, I'd almost rather reboot and run a different game with the same players and open up a new recruitment than I would try to recruit players into this one.

What do you guys think?

If you'd prefer to start a new game in a new thread, mdt, I'd be up for that. You thinking you'd run another game in this hectate world of yours or are you wanting something different?

I like this world setting, but after experiencing it for a year on here, I think it leans more toward real world game setting. The exploration can be tedious for players on the PBP. It takes months to get somewhere interesting, where it would take a game or two in the real world.

What would you all think of an eastern adventure type setup? I have an eastern island in my homebrew world. You could make the same characters as outsiders who come to the island, or remake them as natives, or make new characters of either stripe. I know Gavmania was eager to play a blinkdog (an outsider to the island, but doable).

retired

Yeah, I think sand-box elements of adventures (like free-form exploring) tend to not be a great fit for pbp in my experience. The necessary big group decisions tend to slow things waaay down. It can be tough to manage, even with an active group of players.

When you say eastern adventure, you mean like with ninjas, samurai, and oni and the such? That's not a theme or style that I've found overly compelling or interesting in the past, but I'm happy to go there if you've got the itch.

Just throwing it out as options, not required.

I've got 3 main continents on my homebrew. One is a typical fantasy area, where it's somewhat over civilized (meaning that most of the conflict is more like country vs country or in the few wastelands that still exist).

Another is a continent where the core races got kicked off the continent. So the core races are all but extinct (or are extinct), or so badly changed they aren't recognizable.

The third continent is a more eastern themed one, and yes, with Samurai, Ninja, Oni and such. In that particular land, it's not Good vs Evil that's the driving forces... it's Chaos vs Law. So you're more likely to see LG and LE teaming up to kick CE and CG's butts than seeing LG and CG teaming up to stop Team Evil.

retired

Is this land of many hectates part of your homebrew world or a different one entirely? If you ever care to chat about these hectates and everything that was going on here, I'd love to listen! I confess that trying to figure out what this place was fascinated and intrigued me.

As for what we step into next, I've been exploring the conflict between Law and Chaos a bit more in my own characters recently, and that paradigm really interests me. And while western/tolkien-esque fantasy settings have been my staple and where I have found the most enjoyment, a step abroad might reveal some equally fun and interesting times.

While I like Abbas I like playing more so I am game for a different concept. I haven't ever played an eastern themed, I always had to run them so that could be a hoot.

Honestly I am up for whatever, I rarely lack for concepts so if you guys have a strong pull to one over the other I am happy.

Sure, I don't mind.

Basically, the entity that pulled you all in was a golem computer hybrid thing that a wizard created to catalogue as much of the many dimensions as possible.

Then said wizard went and died.

But the golem kept going and going and going, and since the universe is infinite, it never ever finishes it's job. Over the long long long time it's been working, it's picked up enough knowledge from different worlds to be able to create souls, so it duplicates souls that are about to die to get a work force, and then sends them out investigating.

The hectate was a creation of long dead gods that wanted to steal things from many worlds but not get caught. So they developed the Egg. Originally, they would take the egg to a world, use it on whomever they wanted to capture, and then bring the duplicate back. The original was erased from history.

However, the gods (6 of them) eventually died, and their little world began to go off kilter without them around to fix things. At each corner of the world hex, there was a shrine (so if you went all north or all south or all northeast, etc) you found one of the shrines.

The boat heads matched the shrine they were headed toward.

It required someone to go into the shrine and learn how to adjust the controls of the world to restabilize it (the whole acrete thing wasn't supposed to happen, but the magic generators are badly misaligned at this point. The system is prioritizing the stable hectates because those have the most people in them.

Eventually your characters were supposed to be able to fix the world by resetting all 6 of the shrines to get them working properly again, and ascend into godhood to take over the Hectate World as the new gods and goddesses.

Oh dang! I wasn't tooooo far off then. =)
I had keyed in on the Voice as belonging to a computer or some similar kind of analog, and had been developing the suspicion that we were either in a Matrix like simulation or a Brainiac-type of collection, either of which was breaking down (stable vs unstable hectates). That things were ultimately fixable or what acrete was though totally eluded me.

It's probably a good thing Lilandra never ascended to godhood though. The revelation that she wasn't actually herself shook her up pretty badly and I'd intended for that to really shape her personality down the line. =)

retired

Say we go with this eastern themed setting of yours, mdt - would you be ok if I wanted to create a new character instead of transplanting Lilandra? Did you have a level range in mind if it's something other than where we're at currently?

Part of my inspiration for Lilandra is I wanted to try my hand at building a non-standard/multi-classed character whose combat focus was on a reach weapon. It's something I'd still like to work at, but I'm wondering if there might be other alternative classes to explore that might also be more appropriate to the eastern setting.

Sure, you cna make new characters, as I said. I heard back from Gavmania via PM, he had given up on the game due to the lack of posts. He said he'd drop by if I did a new one.

If you're all interested then, I'll work up a recruitment thread tonight, along with particulars.

Preference for level? I'd off hand think anywhere from 1st to 4th level to start. And do you want to play inhabitants, or foreign devils who just got to the land (and could be mixed). There's some class restrictions, which I'll go into, for the island (I'll also need to update those due to the ACG).

retired

I'd prefer a character a little wet behind the ears and more experienced than levels 1 or 2. Level 3 or a little north of that would be my preference.

Male Professional Dosser 14/Rules Lawyer6

level 3 would be my preference, too. I'd like to try out a Warpriest, but that could be reflavoured as Eastern, so I am easy about whether we are Eastern or foreign devils. Either that or Zen Archer.

On the world, the Eastern continent is a persona non gratta to the gods, they don't like to send avatars there, and they will never visit themselves. There are ancient tales that the gods can actually die if they are killed on that continent, and avatars actually die permanently there as well. Any priest of a god needs an diefic relic to reliably use his spells/priestly abilities there (so warpriest would be hampered at first, until he found one). Depending on the player, some players don't like playing that. :)

Some divine spellcasters don't have that issue, but I'll have to look up which ones don't when I get home tonight.

Lingfeng

Wandering Crane

Honestly it's a multi way tie at every slot but this reflects my best sense of things.

Sorry for being slow to add my 2cp here, just having my first chance to sit down and give all the applicants a look.

My top 4 picks, in order, are:
1) Lingfeng, Human Dragon Bloodline Sorcerer
2) Shou Hei'an, Dhampir Magus (bladebound kensai)
3) Dunja Hanna - Shaman/Samurai (speaker of the past)/sword saint)
4) Tsume Sasayaku, Catfolk Swashbuckler

I didn't do an intense audit of their character builds or anything, but weighed them more on their creativity in their character creation and a quick look at their overall posting history/longevity.

The top two slots are my far and away most desired picks, while in the third spot Dunja edged out just a wee bit over Tsume. I thought Tsume's approach to reflavoring the swashbuckler was awesome, but Dunja squeaked ahead barely just from my own personal preferences for race-distribution in adventuring parties. I really like a Star Wars approach, where humans (or very nearly human-like, such as dwarves and elves and other Pathfinder CRB races) are the majority with one or two whackadoodle races (droids or wookies, for instance) added in for color and kicks.

That being said, I'd be perfectly content if Tsume got a seat at the table. But yeah, in my view, these four are the best of the submissions.
