I’m not sure what exactly I should say to introduce myself. Lief is a skilled sailor and talented negotiator (+13 diplomacy and sense motive), and a party buffer (his performance will boost everyone’s attacks/damage). As a player I can swear in about 7 different languages.

When I swear in real life Russian, and there are Russians around, it can break up fights because my Russian (I have a weird german-polish accent, use words not wrongly but oddly, and resolutely avoid the 5th and 6th grammatical case, which doesnt exist in German).

The most difficult language to swear in for me is swiss german. Like, I just cant.

Swearing in Slovakian is similar, it like, sounds like a very much cutified version of Russian for me, and swearing in it is just odd.

@Emerald- that’s a good thought but I have uncanny dodge (so don’t count as flat footed when unaware) and combat reflexes (so I can still make AoOs while flat-footed), so I should probably be ok, I think.

As far as I know they don't have a pilot, but that is up to the captain. You might want to talk to her first.

I certainly don’t want to step on any toes but, if Vilka’s interested in being ship’s surgeon my biggest strength is social interaction (+13 to diplomacy and sense motive) and first mate would probably give me the most opportunity to use that. If making a new person first mate doesn’t sit well with people, my profession (sailor) is +9 so I could probably get away with being bosun/boatswain (and my acrobatics and climb are both +11 on a ship, so a position where I can still be in the rigging might not be a bad idea).

Master
The term used to describe a leader of certain section. Thus the master gunner is the person in charge of the guns (artillery, now pistols), the Master Rigger would be in charge of fixing the ships rigging, a Master carpenter, would be the top carpenter. Under these "masters" would be a series of mates. Thus you might have a gunners mate and gunners second mate and so on.

While we’re still in port, I can make a different character (or bow out) if that would be helpful? Face skills are Lief’s biggest thing, so if he’s going to fill a position on the ship that doesn’t use those at all, and the captain prefers to handle the face stuff herself, he’s maybe not a great fit for the party.

I could maybe put together an alchemist/gunslinger to add some ranged damage and still be able to do a little back-up healing (and make their own guns/ammo, maybe even be able to enchant it eventually)? Or, I made a bruiser ages ago for this AP and the game fizzled out right about here- I could bring him back (a Str based melee guy who fights with a ship’s anchor that’s chained to his wrist)? Or a druid with some weather based magic that would allow for some battlefield control?

@Lief: I wouldn't mind you being the party's face; I just felt that Capricia hadn't been acting "captainy" enough since she got voted to the position, so I wanted to sort of take charge here.

Maybe we could even set up a sort of continuous misdirection where Lief insinuates that he's the captain of the ship and Capricia's his first mate.

That’s a clever, and potentially funny, idea but, sadly, I’m way worse at bluff than I am at diplomacy. I have no objection to the captain taking point in conversations—it’s honestly the most reasonable approach—I just don’t want to be redundant (especially when there’s so many other characters I could make who wouldn’t be).

If you want Lief to add the title of Special Negotiator to his boatswain duties, that works for me. I can try to make a successful Aid Another check to Lief's Diplomacy checks by interjecting something here or there.

I would prefer Lief be the party's face rather than a gunslinger. That causes all sorts of issues for me I would prefer not to get into unless I have to. Guns are extremely rare, only the Pirate King has them at present. If someone brings in a gunslinger I have to do a lot of rewriting.

I certainly don’t want to make extra work for you! I thought maybe a gunslinger/alchemist would spare you from having to do any extra work because he could craft all his own gunpowder/bullets and, I think, learn to enchant his own gun too, so you wouldn’t have to add any extra loot just for him or anything. But if the Pirate King’s gun is a plot element or something, obviously that would be harder to overcome.

That was just one of several ideas though… would a grizzled, surly sailor who’s built like an ox and uses a ship’s anchor as a weapon be a better fit? Or, a somewhat androgynous druid who reveres Gozreh (The Wind and Waves) and can use weather effects to impair our enemies?

I can stick with Lief the skald if you want, I’m just having a little trouble figuring out his place in the party. I suppose, I could lean into the sort of stereotypical ‘fu€kboi’ bard trope and his diplomacy would have some use outside of actual plot related encounters?

both you and Leif are doing well, and it's a welcome change of pace to see face men and skill monkeys succeed.

Please don't change a thing, we have really been struggling due to lack of diplomacy, our bard who left, was no where near as effective.

With a average charisma of 11, me with 14 at the highest, we are happy to let you get the conversation going and break the ice. We failed so many rolls trying to make friends on the ship, we almost didn't make it in time for the mutiny. We had to delay it until we were ready.

Btw You already have a Gozreh Storm Caster, me.

Its fun for me to have a Skald while actually not being the skald :).

We do have a lot of "kind of melees", and in contrast to many peoples opinions, skalds work ok with spellcasters since you get to chose each turn if you let the performance effect you. I intend to cast? Not accepting. I intend to smack someone? Yes, thanks for the +2 to hit, +2 to damage and the elemental boink on top.

Vikla dabbles in diplomacy, has pretty reasonable sense motive, but as a cleric she just doesnt really have the skillpoints.

Oh, Vikla picked up a +1 boarding pike, it would be mildy better on Leif, and Vikla did invest 2 feats into having wisdom to hit (but she only has this with rapiers).
