What is your favorite class, And why?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So, I was curious, What is everyones favorite class? And what is it you like about that class?

Personaly, Of the handful of classes I played, My favorite is the Alchemist. I just love the Alchemist because to a beginner like me, It feels like the Alchemist can be built for just about anything, It has bombs and mutagen and extracts, And with discoveries you can further grow the class with fun and intresting options!

My first alchemist I just picked stuff at random. My current alchemist I built mostly for range, Using a long bow (From Grenadier archetype's one martial weapon) and bombs, But after befriending a drow noblewoman (Who I worry will come take him away sometime in the future..)he was reminded of his quest to become stronger then his sister (And to impress on the drow woman) so he has started focusing more on Mutagen, And I am considering going for Master Chymist due to the fun flavor.

What do you like, And why?

I like an Oracle with the deaf curse because he can’t hear this question be asked every three weeks on the forums.

I like the oracle, as it is like the Cleric but with more flavor, and a cleric was my first PC back in the OD&D days, good old Father Kirkman.

For obvious reasons I like the Rogue.

I really enjoyed playing a Magus. Casting and full attacking in the same round is great and there are some cool arcana options to add in versatility. I also like the "caught between two worlds" aspect which led to a great subplot for my character.

My favorite class varies. Probably, my current favorite is the Inquisitor. It has a great balance of offensive and utility abilities and spells, while also having a good number of skill point and class abilities that buff skill use. With the ability to add a Domain or Inquisition, you can focus your play style in a lot of different ways. You can be the party skill monkey, the party face, a front line fighter, a backup healer, a solid ranged combatant, etc.

Alchemist, it's just a ton of fun.

Inquisitor, it is also a ton of fun.

Medium, yup, you guessed it, ton o' fun.

Kineticist, I recommend bringing a friend and both taking Interweave Composite Blast, it's a ton of fun.

Gah I just lost my post to the forum-gremlins.

So ...

PALADIN - This is my favourite. I know a lot of people don't like it, but I love the flavour. Once you get past that you find it's a VERY strong class ... seriously once you hit level 4 you'll never die. Lots of flavourful abilities that mean you'll be useful in and out of combat, and you have yourself a great class.

I'll add a couple briefly that are honourable mentions:

ALCHEMIST - Adaptability and Versatility are the main draws here, and it's SO good at both. (EDIT: And Master Chymist is SOO good)

BLOODRAGER - Sometimes I don't want to make a Paladin, but I want something similar. Strong class, bloodlines give interesting flavour.

INVESTIGATOR - Like the Alchemist, Adaptability and Versatility are key. My favourite was a Brawler-1/Investigator-X, able to rise to any occasion!

MAGUS - Love me some Gish and Magus Gish is best Gish!

ORACLE - Not usually a fan of 9th level casters, but DAYUM the Oracle has so much flavour!

Was that really necessary?

If people are posting the same threads again and again it just means that there are new people joining the community who haven't seen it before. Rather than sarcastically telling them off, it might be better to welcome them.

May I suggest that you've actually been playing with the Clouded Vision curse, since you don't seem to see the bigger picture.

I have a favorable opinion on a lot of different classes and I like to borrow abilities and effects from them to fill in any gaps in the party, or my character's role. To that end I like to use archetypes, variant multiclass options, and even traditional multiclass to a degree.

My favorite class? The Druid. Solid chassis to build off. Built in versatility. Options for martial, spellcasting, or support focus.

Cleric. I like to heal. (Yes, yes, I know that xx and xx and xx can heal too)

Barbarian. If you need to know why, just ask our spokesman DR. BARBARIAN AM BARBARIAN, PHD. Or just check out this educational pamphlet written by the same.

Fighter human....can't beat the feat!

Paladin or Cleric. Plus anti-paladin (insinuator or tyrant archetypes.)

I really love the deities of Golarion, I guess.

Doesn't matter the only class that matters is diviner wizard who burns all their level 1 slots on Heightened awareness and carries a dueling weapon.

Fairly recent previous thread about this. Thread Necromancy welcome.

I don't actually play, I use the formula for creating characters for writing in fantasy settings, and I find it is a pretty decent system. That said though I am not so much about point builds and more about flavour, so I tend towards rogues and bards.

Liberty's Edge

I have had fun with every class I have played (barbarian/sorcerer/dragon disciple, rogue, cleric, paladin, druid, hunter, monk, oracle, investigator, wizard, magus, summoner, bloodrager). The zen archer gets boring after a while. It's hard to pick a favorite. Maybe hunter. Or magus.

Liberty's Edge

I've also enjoyed every class and it seems a toss up for my favorites are

Cleric, Fighter and Oracle/Sorcerer

Cleric's of Abadar for the humor alone of looking at a party member and asking for payment for services rendered.

Fighter for the sword & board classic fun, that and a high AC at the start help's survivability.

Oracle/Sorcerer word casters are fun. It's slows down spell power but give's it a more natural growth to me as neither is a caster that learns from books, to me the magical words appear in their minds. So instead words that can be mixed and matched to cast spells makes a lot more sense :-3

My preferences are Kineticist and more recently (archetyped) Vigilantes. Mostly for the build flexibility (both can be built *several* different ways on the same chassis,) but also because I've been on a Magical Girl kick of late and Vigs with Transformation Sequence are the best Magical Girls.

I'm not sure I have a favorite. Before joining PFS, I GMed much more than I played, so mostly I've had the "luxury" of building a lot of different NPCs, but very few of them get much screen time. When I do get to play in someone else's home game or in PFS, I like to play a variety of character types.

That said, the three Pathfinder characters that I've played longest are:

Rogue (human): My first and highest-level PFS PC (currently rogue 9/cleric of Cayden Cailean 1). He's a core rogue because I didn't own Unchained at the time, but he's still pretty effective, and I've managed to keep him interesting and useful both in and out of combat. I mostly chose his class because I played the rogue pregen in my first couple PFS sessions.

Cleric of Iomedae (tengu): For a mini-campaign my wife ran. I let other players pick their classes first, then took the role that most needed filled. He had the Tactics domain, which helped justify using my rules knowledge to help out the group, some of whom were much more casual PF players.

Brawler (oread): I hadn't played a hybrid class before (PC or NPC), and brawler seemed the least complicated one to try first. Also, when I acquired People of the Sands, I wanted to try out the living monolith prestige class, and brawler seemed a fun way to start. The past few months, I'm been playing him more than my other PFS characters so that I can get him there more quickly (just one more level!), and very much enjoying it.

I like the Oracle for its flavour, but I've yet to play one.

I usually play what I think the group needs, rather than what I'd most like to play.

I have a thing for all 9lvl spellcasters
but I must admit that the most fun I've had was with a chirurgeon alchemist... then again, my experience with PF is limited...

Wizard. Always wizard.

Oracle. So many built in character ideas, plus spontaneous divine casting, armor, some skills, and really fun class abilities. I want to try all the mysteries.

Druid. The class has been around forever and it is such a diverse class. Lots of different ways to have fun with a Druid.

Grand Lodge

I can't narrow it down so I will talk about types of classes.

9th level casters. Druids and Oracles because they can be build to fill nearly any role. The oracle is such a well build class you could actually use it as a basis for its own game system.

6th level casters. Alchemists, inquisitors, and investigators have such interesting resources and can be built to fill many fun niches. Like my previous favorite classes the sheer variety of builds possible with these classes is what is impressive. The amazing additional benefit of these classes is that even when specialized they can still adapt to fill other roles when they need to.

The Spheres of Might Conscript. Everything that the Fighter should have been and more.

For Paizo classes, probably the Occultist.

Favorite class I've actually played: Shield Champion - Brawler archetype.

Current favorite in theory: Monk/ -Human with Racial Heritage Catfolk. Monk archetypes Master of Many Styles / Nimble Guardian. I love the idea of going beyond merely practicing Tiger Kung-Fu to a Tiger with Kung-Fu! :)

As for a healer combo I've enjoyed: Paladin/Life Oracle. Keeping my party alive while watching my own HP go up and down like a yo-yo was nerve-wracking but a blast! :)

I love the Kineticist to bits, when you understand the puzzle-box and use the limited palette to it's fullest you can do amazing things.

My runner-up class is probably Swashbuckler because I like charismatic characters, and I like being a mundane heroic character in a magical world.

Dark Archive

Summoners, all day every day. Eidolons are super fun to create, the class brings a lot of utility and power, and the relationship between your two connected entities is an amazing story/roleplay hook.

I've since warmed up to the Unchained version, and I do enjoy the themes of subtypes, but the limiting mechanics can rub the the wrong way at times.

Alchemist (Especially when playing a mutagen freakshow) is another one I enjoy, and Kineticists with its awesome Burn mechanic and flashy power sets is a close second.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Slayer I was always a fan of the sneaky characters and the slayer can do almost everything i want in a combat focused sneaky character.

Bard and specifically the Sound Striker because it adds some Sonic damage options as flavor, but doesn't change much of the Bard chassis. Masterpieces can help to customize your bard further (provided you and your GM agree on how they work!).

2nd favorite is Investigator, specifically the Lamplighter archetype which gets Alchemical Illumination (which allows casting of Daylight and Searing Light via potions or extracts and a lanturn/lamp by 8th level and Judgement Light at 11th!) and escalating Initiative bonuses at varying levels. By 12th, you will add both your Dex and Int bonuses to Initiative as well as free Inspiration die!

Sorcerer. Hands down. The ability to create interesting themes with the right bloodline and spell selection has always given me a thrill.

The fact that Silent Spell, Still Spell, and Eschew Materials essentially make it impossible for you to ever lose access to your substantial innate power is just icing on the cake.

Dark Archive

Alchemist - It manages to have lots of flavor and variety in the discoveries, a wide array of archetypes that can mix up how it plays and offer interesting new directions to take the class, several different features that you can focus on (bombs, mutagens, infusions, random other discoveries, etc), has the power and versatility of being a caster (albeit not a full-caster), can fill a variety of roles, and pairs well with the variety of alchemical items that are available. They're broadly competent, play differently from one another while staying within the class's overall alchemy themes, and are just generally really fun to play.

Oracle, Kineticist, and Witch are all also strong contenders, but Alchemist remains my favorite.
