Working on getting a game ready for this weekend and
hit a snag.
I'm trying to apply the Young Template to the Frost Worm, and trying to do it using the rebuild rules (as an attempt to better understand templates).
I'm good until I get to the
*Attacks decrease damage dice by 1 step*
What exactly does this mean?
Does this mean I take the Forstworm's bite 4d10 down to 4d8 and it's cold damage 4d4? Tied to that what about the +15 add on the bite damage does that get tweaked?
Thanks

The +15 is due to its strength.
If you subtract 4 from its strength, that would decrease its strength modifier by 2. You will also be decreasing its size from Huge to Large, which would typically decrease its strength by 8, and decrease the strength modifier by 4.
Can you explain to me how the +15 is from it's strength?
It's strength is 31 which is a +10?Am I missing an assumed mod somewhere?

Monsters with only a single attack type deal 1.5 times damage with it, similar to wielding a two-handed weapon.

Damage decreasing one size means you look up the chart in the universal monster rules (cant link, am on phone) that lists natural attack damage and go down one step. I believe 4d10 might become 4d8 or something.
31 str gives +10 to attacks, or +15 with twohanded weapons. If a monster only has a single natural attack its treated as twohanded.
When applying young, Str drops by 4, and you decrease size, but thestrength shouöd not be further droped by 8 (unlike what brf said - this is because the template makes an exception).
So, if the drop actually is to 4d8 (unsure) it should go from 4d10+15 to 4d8+12.

The post ninjas have already covered most of this, but here are a few thoughts.
- The frost worm's Bite also works much like a two-handed weapon in regards to Power Attack. This means you'd take a -5 to hit but do +15 damage.
- After size bonuses and penalties your young frost worm's attack line should look like: Melee bite +24 (4d8+12 plus 4d6 cold)
As far as tactics go, the Cleave feat can double your attack rate if any PCs are adjacent to each other. Power Attack is a mized bag. I'd consider starting off without it and adding it on if the hits seem to be coming easily. I guess it depends on the party's AC, but the frost worm wouldn't know anything about that until it attacks a few times.
I'd keep the cold damage the same since it doesn't seem size based. A Medium and Large flaming sword would both do +1d6 fire damage, for instance.

The problem in this case is that d10 isn't listed on the chart. D10 to d8 seems reasonable, except that if you enlarge a d8, it becomes 2d6. On the other hand, looking at manufactured weapons, a medium weapon that does d10 is a d8 when small, and vice versa, so they may not necessarily be equivalent comparisons.
