Interest Check: A very specific and extra weird Reign of Winter

Recruitment

This is purely an interest check. I'm not at all ready to run this thing.

Every since I read the world-hopping weirdness of Reign of Winter, I've thought of taking it even further. So what I propose is using Rogue Genius' Anachronistic Adventures. If you aren't familiar, this is a collection of classes intended to emulate pulp fiction characters and specifically characters who are out of place in a fantasy setting, something like Flash Gordon or John Carter. Lots of other concepts as well. The idea is that a group of characters from a fairly normal (but pulpy) 1917 Earth are brought through a portal or something into the events of Reign of Winter. The characters would be fish out of water. PC magic would be very limited, with the enemies having more magical firepower. Given the slow nature of PbP, who knows how far it would make it into the Adventure Path. The fun would be in the characters encountering the weirdness, so the characters would need not to be too weird to start with.

I realize that is pretty vague, but I thought I'd throw it out and see if there is any interest.

As for rules, the whole supplement is pretty much open content, so we could create a private wiki for the Anachronistic rules pretty easily.

This sounds pretty cool! I'd be willing to throw some effort into this if you ever became ready to run it. I love weird and specific things.

Interested! I am new here, but I have played Pathfinder for a long time. I bought the Anachronistic Adventures book a while back and have a distinct love of vintage culture, so I would love for you to write some more on what plot-point you are looking at using to see PCs transfer worlds.

Reign of Winter begins with a portal to a land of winter in a sort of Lion, Witch, Wardrobe kind of way. I'd probably start the campaign with some sort of attack and unseasonable winteryness near the portal, which the characters would be sent to investigate (or take on themselves to investigate). Given the time period, this could have something to do with WW1, or explorations in Egypt, or Eastern Mysticism, or something else.

That sounds pretty fun. You have my interest.

I am still interested. I think if you run this I will play as a soldier who took part in the World War and witnessed all the horrors of war before being wounded and shipped back home to recover.

Will we be able to craft ammunition in this game? I would totally have him still use his military-issue rifle in the game and may have him also pick up more archaic weaponry once the group arrives in Golarion out of practicality.

I also wonder how you intend to handle explosives? I imagine that my character will try to craft Mills Bombs as well, which were the earliest form of fragmentation grenade and were similar, at least in basic design, to the infamous German 'tater masher' grenades.

Silver Crusade

That sounds like it has the potential to be absolutely wonderful.

Or a TPK in the second session :-(.

One concern I'd have is that the supposedly "old" technology of Pathfinder is, in fact, sometimes insanely good. Guns, for example, are ridiculously effective in Pathfinder when in the hands of a gunslinger. Far better than their WW1 equivalents were in real life :-(.

Wow, what an interesting idea. I'm down just to see the execution (even if it means the execution is ours!)

Let me look at the source material.

Wow, very interested, I'm not at all familiar with Rogue Genius' Anachronistic Adventures.' But should be able to come up with something if you decide to run it.

GM I would love to play a classic 1900s pulp Sleuth PC, no magic just wits and luck.
Like Agatha Christie's Poirot.

Liberty's Edge

Well, looks like I'll be applying to this one too.
Also, it's one step further towards the weird/comic/anime side, and heavier with magic, but Gonzo is pretty pulpy too.

Part of the reason I wanted to limit the scope of classes to the Anachronistic Adventures it avoids some of the gunslinger shenanigans. My goal with the game, at least early on, would be to have ammunition be a truly precious resource. I like the idea of the characters having to budget things that came with them. That said, it wouldn't be unreasonable for someone to be able to craft ammo.

I have most of the Anachronistic Adventurers material and I love Reign of Winter
Will definitely be keeping an eye open to see if you follow on this idea!

This sounds incredible. Been feasting on some pulpy goodness lately.

This sounds interesting.

I love those classes, but never have I had a chance to play them. I'd apply.

Anachronistic Adventures has limited rules for explosives. I imagine if a character was focused on the idea of crafting bombs, that would need to be a class ability in the long run, maybe adapting something from alchemists.
