I was wondering what you guys are wanting from future starfinder expansions or splat books. Things like new classes, spell effects, feats, or equipment.
I'll start:
Ever since I read about Oras, CN god of evolution, I had an idea of a mad scientist character haphazardly mutating an alien animal to suit his needs. I envisioned a pet class similar to the pathfinder summoner that uses genetically modified organisms to duplicate certain spell effects (bioexplosive blobs of animal matter that recreate an Explosive Blast and the like) and can spontaneously give his pet mutations that recreate things like armor mods or weapon fusions.
So what's on your Starfinder wishlist?

A more in-depth equipment/gear section. The core rule book has info on hotels, meals, clothing, armor and weapons, but what about other random things? Like what does a bandolier cost? In Pathfinder, we had the Ultimate Equipment Guide that gave us all kinds of knick-knacks, but even the Pathfinder core rule book gave us more than the Starfinder core rule book. Weapons and Armor are great, but, I also like a good idea of random stuff I can spend my credits on.

In the vein of more gear (a popular refrain), more Powered Armor.
One of my favorite sci-fi elements is Powered Armor, and there are only five suits listed, one of which is a Power Loader (like in Aliens), then the base Combat model at 5th, then not 'til 10th is there a weird spider-mecha suit (with defenses one point better than the 5th level suit), then at 11th is a 24ft tall flying robot, then finally at 15th the Combat Model Mk2.
Seeing as Dead Suns tops out at about 12th level or so, I doubt I'll be using Power Armor for this AP. I like the idea of Power Armor, but I don't like the idea of having 5th level defenses at 12th level (or having to buy a second suit of lower-defense light armor to wear underneath... kludgy!).

Books for the near future... or books that need to come up ASAP to better solidify Starfinder as a setting:
- NPC Codex/Adventurer's Guide/Villain Codex; Basically a book filled with NPCs.
- Ultimate Equipment/Technology Guide; A book filled with weapons, armors, starships and other goodies.
- World Guide; A book that described each main planet/space station
- Legacy Guide; A book that goes into detail about converting each Pathfinder class into the Starfinder system. Yeah, there's a chapter about it, but it would be a HUGE time-saver :P
- Advanced Class Guide; A book to expand each of the 7 classes, with more options, archetypes, feats and such.
- Ultimate Races; A 300-page book LOADED with alien races, y'know, like Star Wars' Ultimate Alien Anthology.

- World Guide; A book that described each main planet/space station.
We got one coming in March, it has detailed descriptions of all the Pact Worlds and I'd assume at least some of their moons as well. I imagine that'll come with some gear and rules too.
- Ultimate Races; A 300-page book LOADED with alien races, y'know, like Star Wars' Ultimate Alien Anthology.
That's kinda what the Alien Archive is, 1/3 of the creatures in that book will have their own racial traits making them playable for anyone outside of SFS, and some of them will also have equipment developed by their race/culture that'll be available to anyone.

I wish they will show restraint with the product schedule and not flood the market right away, so we don't have to sit here in five years talking excitedly about Timefinder, a streamlined update on Starfinder set in the time stream (or whatever).
On second thought...
Considering that the pact worlds book won't be out for six months, I don't think you need to worry too much about flooding the market.

I for one would LOVE to see some new alien races, especially some analogues to the old Alternity/StarDrive races, such as the Mechalus (already represented well enough by the androids), Sesheyan, T'Sa, and Werren. Being able to boot up our Alternity/StarDrive campaigns using this refined, modern rule set would tickle our group pink.
I also second the need for more equipment, and starships/vehicles too.

I'd like to see more powered armor. Things ranging from marine armor in starcraft to the elemental and battle armor from Mechwarrior/Mechassault.
I want to see more vehicles, and some stuff for fighter planes in atmosphere. I wanna be able to have a scenario where players decide to take a jet, and jump out of it with specialized power armor to the ground below.
I want to see more interplay between class features and starship combat such as spells that can be used in starship combat to mess with the enemy.
I want to see weapon upgrades like KotOR 2, with scopes, power supplies, stocks, triggers

Good to hear, because we're talking about a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE world here, like much bigger than Golarion :P

From what I've heard, the Alien Archives are supposed to be smaller books, BUT also yearly books, so ;)

All I want out of future content is "not too much".
The amount of options with Pathfinder is, to me, a little off-putting. I like the system, but it feels like you need to take a masters degree in it to get the most out of the game.
I am enjoying being in on the ground floor with Starfinder, but I really hope it's not going to become as twisted and tangled as its older brother.

I liked that "too much" approach honestly. It really allowed for people play whatever they could dream of.
Starfinder feels bare right now. Which is fine because it allows the community to really take apart the mechanics and put them back together again. Though I can't help but want more than what is out. Which I mean I think most of us are. But that's my opinion.
I would second the ultimate equipment thing. Starfinder really feels item dependent so having more would only help give more option. Also as an illustrator i just want more art. I have never actually run anything but homebrew so I want a lot of fleshing-out of this solar system because I want to know what things look like because I feel like it is more important in THIS setting more than pathfinder.
Aliens I just more diverse societies and stuff like that. Kinda like Sanghelios from Halo.

I agree with both of the requests for .... more gear and more info on planets, moons and space stations.
I would like to add to that ...
more information on legal systems , advanced forensic information , security system information, also what kind of data is available on each person etc.
For example , if I write a murder mystery, what could I do to cover up a murder, what can I expect from authorities, what kinds of personal data is available, do I have full DNA libraries on everyone in the station, can I generate a hologram of what that person would look like from a drop of blood.
I would assume that there is more complex command structures and systems in place, but it's difficult to imagine what those might be.

I haven't found many options for playing a shapeshifter or a polymorph specialist. That's weird to me because there's now a god of evolution, and now we have a plethora of scifi tropes available to us (mutations, gene splicing, bio augmentations, weird alien stuff, etc).
I agree. Kinda hard to make an Outlaw Star game if I can't have the shapeshifting Ktarl Ktarl.

Ships. More ships. A book with more ships, weapons, upgrades, deck plans etc. the space winabaego we will all be flying/living in needs more love. It's a part of starfinder that really adds a lot of heart to the game and really stimulates my imagination. I want more. I'm also completely on board with space whales and other monsters we have to engage with our ships. Ship vs space monster combat would be very interesting

I second the comment on being able to upgrade gear. I would much rather see an "iconic" 1st level example of each weapon type that can be upgraded, refined, tinkered with, etc to reach 20th level in a balanced way. That way Jimmy can still use Granddads rifle even when he's 20th level, or Mom's battle armor she kept when the space militia disbanded. Etc.
I would also really love to see more race and class specific gear. We've got entirely alien races who developed independent of each other... lets see some things only they have figured out! I liked the solarian weapon crystals, and would like to see similar options (not necessarily for damage though) for other classes.
Finally, I feel the weapon fusions need another look (and we need more non-critical ones; 135,000 for a 5% chance is very expensive. That's ~4% of WBL) . The cost to put a "Level 1" fusion on a 20th level weapon is the same as putting a "Level 10" fusion on... That bothers me.

I know right?
(I also totally want to play a worshipper of the god of evolution that splices and mutates himself and allies)

I want more equipment with special effects that are always one, like a Cryo-gun that coats enemies in frost, slowing them down, or a fire gun with low damage but it always does continuous damage.
Or maybe an Electric Gun that bypass force fields. Or plasma swords that are especially effective at cutting through solid materials. Or a grenade which shoots needles in every direction that inject poison. Or guns that pull enemies towards or away from you.
Really just anything for more tech options in combat so that weapon choice isn't just area of effect and damage type, but also whether you want to slow enemy advance, push enemies away, draw them towards you, etc.

Isn't the Alien Archive also going to have spaceship-sized monsters? One could totally flavor a one-man ship as a small Mecha or a standard ship for the party with a combined Mecha.
Ooooor, you could give each character a separate small mech that combines into the larger mech ala Voltron. We'd just need rules for connecting ships (though boarding ships would also be nice too).
Darkling36 |
I like a lot of these options. Personally I want more gear options, some seemingly mundane options instead of the fusions we have now. I can't see myself ever getting almost any of the ones out now honestly. But upgrades like a bigger ammo capacity, maybe a drum that holds triple the amount, and lets automatics fire multiple times without having to reload every other round. Or silencers, or plasma bayonets, or anything like that. The sci-fi genre tends to live and breath through its gear options, even if it's sci-fantasy. At least for me.
I want to see fewer splat books. I only really regret one hardback that Pathfinder did, but there were plenty of small splatbooks that were unneeded or could have been combined, or needed a visit from the game balance fairy.

My friend and I were just talking about how it would be nice to have another healing option. Either as another class, or as an additional option for an Operative or mechanic. A Tech-based healing class that has the equivalent of infusions. Basically a guy who has semi-stable healing serums that only he/she can use that s/he can inject/administer to people to heal them (or maybe heal through his/her drone if he's a mechanic.)
Basically like the smuggler healer from Star Wars the old republic.

That seems more like it should just be equipment anyone can use, but maybe the Soldier or Operative gets a gear boost or specialization that increases it's effectiveness and/or can produce them cheaply ala Bombard grenades.
Another idea is to allow injector guns to deliver healing infusions and not just poisons (though that might already be a thing and I just didn't notice).

I'd love to see rules for actual robots as PCs. I have a friend who believes a space opera setting succeeds or fails based on how it lets you play robot people, and androids were an EXTREME disappointment to him. What he wanted was to play something more like a Warforged from Eberron or K-2SO from Rogue One.

pt. 1) Well the Bombadier gets a grenade that only he can use, why not a healing serum only someone can use? Basically, We just want another healing option other than Mystic. I mean, in pathfinder, there were bards, clerics, druids, rangers, AND paladins. Now? All we have are mystics, and maybe the envoy can recoup some stamina points.
pt. 2) Afraid not. Healing serums specifically need to be ingested, not injected. Unless something somewhere says otherwise.

A Starship rewrite: The DCs are already going to be reexamined, but what I'd really like is for the starship scaling chart to be changed to something that remembers the square-cube law exists, with mass, cargo capacities, expansion bay count, and crew capacities updated accordingly. It doesn't even have to be huge increases to the crew section either, since that's just starship combat crew - just something that reflects how truly massive the human capacity of a large vessel can get! Let those dreadnoughts and cruise liners carry the thousands they really could.
Starship fluff: It's all very nice that we have stats for things like the X-laser cannon, that tells us we can shoot a nice big laser in a line for however many dice of damage to everything in the way... but what is it, exactly? We don't need pictures for everything, but personal-scale weapons all got a little bit of description, while starships got nothing.
Vehicles: With the greater emphasis on technology, naturally we need more vehicles too. And actual explanation of them would be nice as well. I'm pretty sure I understand what the hoverpod is supposed to be, but it would be helpful if there was at least a little bit of a blurb on it like weapons and armor get.
Power Armor: We have twenty character levels, and only five types of power armor spread throughout them. Lots of design space to fill there.
Magical Diversity: I completely understand why they cut 9 level casting from the game. And I completely understand why there are only two dedicated magic classes, given that there are only seven classes at all in Core. But for the future, there's still quite a bit of design room here! And beyond that...
Classes: I understand that Paizo has mostly preferred to go with archetypes rather than entirely new classes, and that Pathfinder's class selection grew fairly slowly. But with even fewer core classes and an entirely new magic/technology dichotomy to explore, I think there's plenty of design space for a few more base classes. And themes, while we're thinking about this sort of thing.
Items: Other people have mentioned Ultimate Equipment, and I have to echo that. With magic and technology working together, there's a whole new world of stuff waiting to be written, and that's even before useful holdovers from the older eras are considered. Like bandoliers.
And of course, monsters and races and the lot, but that's already on its way. In the grand scheme of things, it won't be very long before we have our hands on it at all.
Aerotan |
Going to echo the updates to starship creation, the whole chapter felt rushed as hell, with the addition that I'd also like to see Station creation rules, since I'd had the idea for Vast Warren, but it just won't work even at colossal size.
I feel like Psionics could also take another looking at, especially since the psychic damage and psychic link portions of it are segregated a bit as it stands and we have at least one race inbound who's psychically focused.
