Hey everyone! Next Wednesday a bunch of the Starfinder team members will be streaming a live playtest, followed by a Q&A about the Starfinder RPG (for more details on the exact time/link, stay tuned to the blog). But before then, we'd love to collect your questions! We'll pick some of our favorites from this thread and answer them live, as well as potentially grabbing some from the chat during the interview. (For added fun, I'll mention who asked what when reading the questions live, so bring your A game!)

So what do you want to know?

Will there be a full-construct/robot race for Starfinder? Being able to play a droid (whether it was humanoid/bipedal or more utilitarian like an astromech) in Star Wars is always a highlight.

Androids are cool and all but I like the appeal of construct bonuses (immunities) and penalties (really hard to heal) which the androids lack.

For a regular Pathfinder equivalent, there's the Wyrwood race. Story-wise their race background sounds like it could totally be used for a battle-bot space arena gladiator race that rebelled and gained their own independence and star systems like other droid races in Sci-Fi literature.

1. Will SF be able to adapt to varying kinds of "scope?" Like, will it be able to do both sweeping, epic space operas like Mass Effect AND gritty, space-cowboy antiheroics like Firefly AND optimistic space exploration like Star Trek? In my experience, it's very difficult to get the mechanical presentation of all of these right in a single system.

2. If the answer to the above was yes, how difficult was it to get both the mechanics and setting of SF to be able to slide between idealistic/pessimistic and small-scale/large-scale?

3. Will any of the races from Distant Worlds be making a comeback as core races?

4. Will the Dominion of the Black have a more significant role in SF? In a more spoiler-y question, will they eventually become the focus of an AP?

5. Golarion has a policy of not updating its world for each AP, or having key parts of APs hinge upon previous APs happening. Will there be something different for SF?

6. Could you name one thing in SF's mechanics that's significantly, wildly different from PF's?

What sort of progression system is being considered for Starfinder? A standard leveling system (with or without feats?) XP purchasing?

What will be "compatible" between Starfinder and Pathfinder? When it comes to character customization, will things like classes, feats, archetypes, races, and traits be available? Will they require any small conversions to be ready to use?

When Golarion disappeared did the inhabitants of Golarion end up on the station or was the station built after the occurrence of the gap?

Is the station large enough to house all of Golarion's species and/or did only a select few survive?

Will the world of Starfinder have a form of Internet?

What kind of system of magic can we expect?

(P.S. I know it's a long shot but saying even the tiniest bit of new information about the technomancer would be really awesome)

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2011 Top 32

Will PC groups generally start with a ship or will earning/buying a ship be something that higher level parties do?

Will there be archetypes in the core book?

When can we expect to start getting information on the initial Adventure Path? Pathfinder APs give us at least the title and general theme a year in advance, and at this point we're only seven months out.

How do you intend to balance personal character "toys" (new weapons, gear, magic items) with group based "toys" (things like ship upgrades)?

Any miniatures plan?

Will there be a line of Starfinder Battles?
What about spaceships? Since there will be space battle, any plan of having spaceships mini? Maybe as part of the Starfinders Battles like the dungeon dressing.

What are some of the ways that basic expectations for the game will differ from Pathfinder's? For example, in Pathfinder, needing special ways to breathe without air is considered somewhat valuable, and outside of brief periods via air bubble, one must generally use higher level spells such as water breathing or life bubble, or purchasing various magical items to deal with situations like that; conversely, on the other hand, in Starfinder I expect that suits and similar things that supply you with air are fairly basic equipment, so I would speculate not terribly expensive. As such, a racial ability that allows you to not breathe would be considered fairly powerful in Pathfinder, but might be less outrageous in Starfinder. I can imagine similar alterations with flight, given the potential for small vehicles such as hoverboards or jetpacks...

How will healing work in the game? Will there be more focus on defensive items that make it easier to avoid being injured in the first place with armor, force fields, power armor, and evasive techniques? Or will the advanced science make it easier to have concepts like medigel and nanobots that instantly cure you? Or tanks or similar things in the medical bay that can easily fix you up after you make it out? I'm presuming, at least, that having a mystic in the party is helpful, but not considered mandatory...

Is there going to be any new style feats?

For example I'm thinking futuristic martial arts say a scientifically and possibly AI created combat system or a style derived from training in a simulation. So you can go all out without dying while training. Or one called "Bullet time." ;)

Liberty's Edge

What can you tell us about the first AP? Specifically, what kinds of characters would be especially well-(space)suited to it? Fringe types? Military unit? Starfinder Society members?

How compatible is "compatible"?

Starfinder Superscriber

I second Anguish's post. How easily compatible is compatible?

Since Starfinder is science-fantasy obviously magic will play a significant role. Can you tell us about the sort of themes and spells the two revealed caster classes, the Mystic and the Technomancer, will cover and how the two of them are the same or different than the current set of casters in Pathfinder?

Thanks for your great work!

Scarab Sages

1. Is the current plane to require both a square battle mat and a hex battle mat, given that the starship system requires hexes and the non-startship combat still uses the squares?

2. Will feats and class abilities that benefit starship combat also benefit regular play, or is it an either/or situation?

3. Are alignments a large part of Starfinder, like they are in Pathfinder?

4. If we working on homebrew material for Starfinder, are there areas we can focus on that likely won't change from how they work in Pathfinder?

Contributor

Aside from stat-boosting equipment upgrades, what ideas are bouncing around for starship personalization?

Since it's essentially a 5th PC, some options that reinforce flavor would be cool - a "unique" onboard AI, a finnicky engine system, etc. Things that really help drive home the ship's personality over its function.

Which gods are part of the new "Core 20"?

How many (if any) of the old core 20 are going to be in the new core 20? Which old god/desss?

Will the newer gods of the new core 20 going to be mostly gods we have already heard of (i.e. Brigh, Milani Kurgess, etc...) or completely new gods?

What happened to the members of the Pathfinder Core 20? Did they die? They/their portfolios became irrelevant? Something I've not thought of?

Will there still be alignment?

First of all, thank you for doing this! I have never wanted it to be August so badly in my life.

My big question: We know technology is going to be a big thing, how is this going to affect combat and beyond?

Are we still looking at AC vs. attack rolls? Are players going to be able to "melt" doors with lasers and whatnot? Is all the "space metal" resistant to these sorts of attacks?

One more question: Since we are talking about different planets and their different types, is it safe to assume that there may be different variables to how the players will be able to venture on them?

Is gravity different on these planets? If so, are there certain locations that will have "simulated environments"? Will players have to worry about acidic gases that some planets may have while having to consider heavy lightning storms on others?

Thank you again!

Is it going to be 13.5 cubic meters to the ton, or 14?

Terquem wrote:

They have already confirmed that they shall be using American Customary Measurements, not metric.

I can wait until August. That being said:

1. Will there be a Starfinder(R) Gamemaster guide like Gamemastery?

2. Are you going to use Progress levels or tech levels? Good thing to include in the GM guide.

3. IF there is a GM guide, can it include different approaches to FTL travel besides the Drift?

4. Also, sub-light travel options for starships? Like different types of reaction engines and reactionless engines?

What are some of the game mechanic changes due to the widespread use of guns? For example is it still all about HP, or has a vitality/wound point, or other, system replaced it? Are range modifiers still -2 per increment? How are burst fire and auto fire handled?

What types of vehicles will be in the core rulebook, mostly transport or will there be tanks, fighter jets, etc?

How is damage from large weapons handled, basically what happens when a vehicle mounted 100mm cannon hits a character?

Are we going to see goblins with guns?

1. Will the system of magic utilized by the classes in Starfinder be the same as the classes in Pathfinder? (spells per day, spell slots, etc.)

Will hacking be part of the game at all? If so, will it be just skill checks, or will it be more akin to the battle system?

What was the most difficult class to design for Starfinder and why?

How many galaxies and planets will be introduced in the corebook?

What is going on with the magic system in regards to the arcane/divine/occult magic divide in Starfinder? Since there are only two classes that we know of capable of casting spells, where do they fall into that if there is still such a division of magic? Will those classes cast any spell, no matter if it is divine or arcane or will they have to choose upon character creation?

We already know that nanites and cybernetics exist in Golarion (thanks the Technology Guide, People of the Stars, Nanite sorcerer bloodline, grey goo, etc.), but to what degree will they be prevalent in Starfinder? I think it is safe to assume cybernetics and nanites will scale in power and in application, depending on the character level, as they are mostly a flavor component of sci fi stories, but how prominent will they be in the base setting?

To what degree will we see anything resembling the internet, hacking, and virtual reality? If they are present, will this be relegated to skill checks, a subsystem in itself (maybe like spellcasting or psychic duels), a separate level of reality (like the astral, etherial, or esoteric planes), or something else entirely? If so, will it be incorporated into the ship combat, like hacking the enemy ship's computer(s)? What about hacking robots?

1) How many laser guns are available for PCs?

1a) Will they be spelled "lazer gunz"?

2) Please, may I see a drawing of a space troll as soon as possible?

3) Jason Keeley, can I have a space-hammer of space-thunderbolts?

Will we see more non-humanoid/outsider type 0HD races like oozes, plants, aberrations, etc.?

We know there will be cybernetic options for players but what about bio-tech, genetic enhancement, gene-splicing, etc.?

Will the 0HD races' stats/racial abilities be different in starfinder then their pathfinder versions?

Will there be automatic level bonuses(like Pathfinder Unchained) or will you still still need the "big six" in some incarnation?

Will you still be able to use the Pathfinder classes? with or without archetypes?

How different will the planets be to the version in the Distant Worlds book?

How much time has passed for each of the planets in the Golarion solar system?

When will you unveil the next iconic (if you announce a new iconic during the presentation, can you give us the rough estimate of when the next iconic will be revealed)?

Will there be an iconic for each race, or will predominantly human iconics?

Will there be rules for converting the keneticist class for Starfinder?

Can I play a Caligni?

Are there handheld weapons capable of putting holes in ship hulls?

Can high-level PCs terraform a planet and become the rulers of a new colony?

Are there unmanned drones to use as weapons/scouts? Both in fights in space and on the ground?

What planet-bound themes or situations are the team most excited about?

Since Starfinder is backwards compatable but uses different classes than Pathfinder, will the monsters that have classes still be usable as monsters?

To specify, I meant only the ones who are not part of the current Core 20.

Will the starship battle rules have variants for fleet actions (mass combat) and/ or rules for boarding actions during battles, say for example capturing or disabling engineering on an enemy ship.

While there would undoubtably some system hacking to make it work, could Starfinder be combined with another d20 system (such as SW Saga Edition) to run a Paizo version of Star Wars?

I second this ^

Will there be a rule set for solar system generation?

Is the Golarion solar system common within it's galaxy or is it an outlier as our own system presently seems to be within the Milky Way?

I think I remember reading somewhere that this is going space opera and not hard Sci-fi, but will we see planets having environmental effects on our characters like different gravities and atmospheric compositions?

No, you cannot.

What do I tell my PF player that wants to be a Paladin or a Druid to play that works in the setting more? If they don't find those interesting enough, how hard is it to make a Space Paladin or pick a random tribal species and give them a Space Druid? A.k.a. how much work to switch pathfinder stuff over after the twink player gets bored and wants to drag some of his op builds over?

I can just imagine: "faster than light ships, exotic aliens and laser weapons and you are playing an Archer Paladin?!" "What, Smite Evil still does more damage than anything else!"

I'll copy and paste my last question from the "Ask..." thread:

Is there any connection between the Gap and the Dimension of Time? And if not, wouldn't the latter be a pretty efficient alternative means of transport across the galaxy (provided you could access it)?

How will skills work in Starfinder? If this has already been answered, can someone link to it in their post please?

Will starships be on a particular spot of the mechanical/biological tech and size scales or will we be able to move them around as we see fit?

Basically, will it be possible to have city sized cathedral ships and car sized bioships and what not?

If you're still being tight lipped about starship stuff, I'll put the question more simply: How diverse are the starships gonna be?

Can you sell me on why the Gap matters to people? Since it was several centuries ago, is its nature and cause anything more than historical curiosity?

A) What ways will Non-casters (like Laser Ninjas) acquire Horizontal Advancement at the respective levels they are expected and required? (3rd lv to hit ghosts, 6th-10th to achieve flight/Regular Flight, 13th Traveling the Planes etc).

B) Will Technological upgrades provide more than simple number increases, and more actually powerful abilities without granular daily limitations?

Alternatively, will the Cybernetics and the like provide both Numbers and abilities?

C) How will the wealth tables be connected to no doubt the just as expensive spaceships? Will there be a separate wealth track, so that PC's can acquire, and upgrade their own ship without having to worry they're missing out on needed magical item upgrades?

Additionally, so that with a separate wealth track, stealing/selling Spaceships not being the ticket to acquiring items at levels not meant to by the game.

D)Does Starfinder intend to renovate the Magic Item system so that its decoupling the needed +X Numbers to scale +1/3lv, so that you could focus on Starfinder items providing abilities?

E) How do you plan to minimize, or prevent there being multiple nerfs to options meant for Non-casters, but keep letting slip more powerful and versatile effects used for Spellcasters?

F) How will non-caster characters be more consistent by the Encounter system, helping create parity with spellcasters?

G) Will High Level (16th-20th) Fighters be capable of Cutting a Moon/Mountain in Half?

H) Will Space Gods be entities capable of being fought by High Level Parties? (11-15th, and 16th-20th respectively)

1) Will everyone start with a towel.

2) DON'T PANIC!

1) We now know that ship customization and combat is a part of the game. My question is: do these ships encompass everything from personal starfighters to massive capital ships? Or in other words: will we be able to have X-wing dogfights and launch assaults against Star Destroyers?

2) Will there be rules for depressurization and zero-gravity firefights? (Yeah, I played Infinite Warfare)

3) Will I be able to port races over from Pathfinder? Hordes of shrieking goblins with lazer guns would be amazing.

4) Will there be NPC classes in Starfinder? Or will I need to use the Soldier player class to represent Stormtroopers?

5) Do the guns in Starfinder include both bullet and energy weapons?

6) Does the Solarion have any obviously sci-fi elements beside strange, mystical, jedi-esque sun powers? Is the class compatible with Pathfinder?

Will there be mythic rules for Starfinder?

Will there be rules for what happens when your fly too close to a Really Bad Thing? (neutron stars, pulsars, magnetars, quark stars, supernovas, black holes, antimatter clouds, ion storms, magnetic monopoles, cosmic strings, domain walls...)

How nice is the Beginner Box/Starter Kit/The Thing I Buy With Miniatures, Dice, a Ground/Space Flip-Mat, and Quickstart Adventures going to be, and where will I be able to buy 10 of them?

Will Starfinder participate in Free RPG Day?

Will the APs be the only first-party adventure line? Anything like the Modules line?

Will Starfinder fall under the CUP?

Any plans for player apps or online tools for Starfinder? Will the VTT licenses recently established for Pathfinder extend to Starfinder?

Will the Starfinder Adventure Card Game be compatible with Netrunner?

Triaxus? Anyone? Y'all love Shadowrun so much, when are you announcing that Triaxus is a dragon-run megacorporation? OR DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO HIDE

You've listed Star Wars and Firefly as inspirations, noting that moral ambiguity is a major theme. Are you drawing from "sillier" stories like Guardians of the Galaxy as well?

How is armor handled? Armor class, Defense score and Damage Reduction, or something else?
