Paladin

Advice

My wife is playing a paladin the GM allowed us to 'create' our own deity, culture, and religion.

My question, best weapon, armor build (she'll be doing a lot of front line stuff), best 'sub' type? I guess you'd call it. We only have one cleric.

In my honest opinion:

Cha is a really important stat, but you still want to pump strength first, so start with a High cha and then pump strength like you would a fighter.

She had 16 in strength? I would put my racial bonus there to get that up to 18.

Con does not have to be good because swift-action lay-on-hands is A LOT of bonus health.

The math I've seen on the forums actually has the paladin come out ahead of the cleric in terms of healing until the spell Heal.

With your stats in order you just grab power attack and go to town. If you are picking out gear, then I always recommend greatsword and full plate, although I have heard of people rocking sword and board with pallies.

+1 to all this.

Make sure to take Fey Foundling.

Oath of Vengeance is awesome. Falchion crit fishing is also very satisfying.

Full Plate, two-handed weapon, Power Attack, Fey Foundling if you like, Oath of Vengeance. Yep, that's the way to go for mechanical optimization on a melee Paladin.

An Archer Paladin is also very mechanically sound (maybe even more so) but doesn't sound like what you're looking for.

She's half elf and her God is a god of compassion and humor. I don't know if 'oath of vengeance' fits her character conception. The rest looks great.

We have an archer/Ranger so I am going with a shield then TWF when I get that.

Something like a Greatsword is definitely a solid way for her to go, then. And Fey Foundling would actually make some thematic sense.

Greatsword it is then. If she agrees. Sometimes she gets something in her head and would rather use concept regardless of the mechanics. She wanted spear and shield but after reading all the posts on polearms she was kind of discouraged.

She wanted a celtic lord of the spear type crossed with an Arthurian knight.

What is Fey Foundling?

Sometimes compassion says, "Kill this son of a b%%@& now because he'll cause more harm to himself and others if he's allowed to live. We talked about it and she said, "Some things just need killing." And she laughs while she kicks the snot out of bad guys because God loves a happy warrior.

You can be compassionate with a greatsword. And humor is more of an attitude thing.

Spears explicitly aren't really a good call. That said, reach weapons have some advantages if you want to go with one. If she goes mounted, lance is actually very good, and you can use it dismounted too, in which case it's basically a spear thematically (though a pretty long one).

This. It's mechanically spectacular for paladins because their Lay on Hands is basically 1/2 their level in d6s, so the +2 per die ups their healing by, like, half again the standard amount. And they can heal themself potentially every round while continuing to fight.

Thanks, she'll like that I think.

You're very welcome. I'm happy to be of assistance.

Spear(or any other polearm) and shield can work, but it requires dipping and a lot of feats.

Polearm paladin is a fine build though, even if you can't always make the best use of your attacks of opportunities.

Consider taking Intimidating Prowess, the Omen trait, and Cornugon Smash or Dreadful Carnage. Free Action Intimidate checks are a great way to contribute in combat on top of dealing damage. A Cruel weapon (refluffed as "Wrathful" or what have you) will then render them sickened on top of shaken.

In addition to Fey Foundling, take one of the races where the alternate favored class option pumps up the LOH. Halfling is ok, but Tiefling is uber! Never take the HP, always take the healing!

Half-elves can get the Elf Paladin FCB: "Add +1/2 hit point to the paladin's lay on hands ability (whether using it to heal or harm)".

One more thing to note that if you want a more "heal-y" paladin, taking a level or two in Oracle with the Life mystery allows you to grab Life Link, which effectively allows you to heal your allies in battle with your LoH without expanding extra actions.

You could even grab the Tongues curse and RP it as making random jokes nobody understands.

Tiefling's get +1 per level, none of that +1/2 stuff!!

However this slows your actual healing down by a full d6 + 1 (or 2 if Tiefling). If you're the group healer, be a cleric or oracle. If you're your personal healer, then stay all paladin.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear she already decided she wanted to play a half elf for roleplaying reasons. She likes the concept and will not change it to get bonuses as she did not select it for the in game bonuses but for the roleplaying aspect of it.

I'm writing a fairly comprehensive Paladin guide for you. I'll PM it to you when I'm done with it. Out of curiosity, when do you need to have the character built and ready? (If I don't have enough time to write the whole guide I'll send a rough and dirty version instead.)

Next week. The GM has had a case of the real-lifes.
