This thread has me wondering how much multiclassing everyone is doing with their PFS characters. You can include all classes you PLAN on taking for the character, not just current levels (the other thread counts current levels, but I'm more interested in total builds).
I'll start. I have 7 active characters. Six of those have 3 classes each, four of which include a prestige class. The other character has 6 different classes and no prestige class.
My favorite class combinations from these characters are:
Apparently, I like charismatic characters.
In case you are wondering, my oddball character has, or will have, the following classes: alchemist, barbarian, fighter, gunslinger, ranger, sorcerer. I might decide to add wizard to this list as well, I just don't know.
Rei |
Thirteen characters, fourteen if you count the one waiting for their Dragon's Demand GM chronicles. Two dead.
Single-class:
Fighter (dead)
Druid
Sorcerer (dead)
Magus
Oracle
Bloodrager
Multiclassed or multiclassing in the future:
Oracle/Paladin
Inquisitor/Rogue/Shadowdancer
Ranger/Rogue (to be Ranger/Rogue/Fighter)
Fighter/Wizard (to be Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight)
Summoner (to be Summoner/Riftwarden)
Fighter/Cavalier
Paladin (to be Paladin/Gunslinger/Inquisitor)
Investigator (to be Investigator/Sleepless Detective)
tl;dr: I tend to multiclass more often than not - the first four characters listed under single-class are also my first four PFS characters. I just really like mixing class features and abilities.
Jayson MF Kip |
Currently, of ten characters, only one multiclass- -a Bard 2/Paladin 4 (will probably continue Paladin).
In the very near future (as in, as soon as my group finishes the last handful of Dragon's Demand):
Ranger 6/Fighter (Archer) 3, doing Greater Feint at range. May add some Rogue/Ninja levels after that. Maybe.
Rei |
The ranger/rogue/fighter is a good staple, and I have yet to play one. Maybe I'll look at that for my next build.
I went silly with mine - I go for weird archetypes a lot, so I ended up making a Tengu Ranger (Infiltrator)/Rogue (Scout/Swordmaster)/Fighter (Two-Weapon Warrior). He flies, walks on walls, and charges stuff a lot while dual-wielding an Aldori dueling sword and a sawtooth saber. While wearing rhino hide. He doesn't really do anything because his damage output, AC and HP are currently pathetic - waiting for that next Rogue level to get Scout's Charge.

Single classed
Cleric
Druid
Shaman (from ACG)
Bard
Sorcerer
Multiclassed
Ftr/cleric
Barbarian/bard
Cleric/barbarian
Bard/cavalier/battle herald
Ftr/ranger
Paladin/monk/champion irori
Wizard/cleric/mystic theurge
Bard/swashbuckler (what a mistake :-( )
Barbarian/oracle
So, lots dual classed. The only ones with 3 classes are those with a prestige class intended for dual classed characters.

I do a lot of multi-classing. The plans for my PFS characters are as follows:
(Flowing) Monk 4 / (Staff) Magus 7+ (Currently 3/2)
(Celestial) Sorcerer 7/Mystery Cultist 4+ (Currently 4/0)
Cleric (Naderi) 5+ / Envoy of Balance 4 (Currently 2/0 I just started thinking about this one since the PrC just came out -- the original plan was to stay straight Cleric, and I may still end up doing that)
(Sniper) Rogue 4 / Witch 4 / Arcane Trickster 3+ (Currently 3/0/0)
(Lunar) Oracle 11+ (Currently 1/0 Barbarian would probably be a very smart dip for this one, but I'm going to try to stay single class for a change.)

I'm currently playing a Aasimar Zen Archer Monk 3/Serene Barbarian 2. I guess I'm not cool enough to have a dozen characters going, so I just have one right now. Levels I am considering for him are Empyreal Tattooed Sorcerer (1), Inquisitor (Infiltrator) (2 or 5), and maybe Ninja (?), and Arcane Archer (?). I've been thinking about Psionic Marksman and ZAM also.

I have a few multiclassed characters, but most of mine are single classed:
1. Elias Quint - 10 Magus
2. Zarris Zadar - 1 Fighter (Lorewarden)/2 Investigator
3. Talir Blackbeak - 5 Gunslinger (Musket Master)/1 Ranger
4. Phinneous Phest - 10 Cleric
5. Al-Ra'd Ibn Sabbah - 6 Fighter (Armor Master) (I almost gave him a level of cavalier, but I found out a different way for him to have his puppy)
6. Savage Frank - 1 Barbarian (Savage Barbarian)/3 Monk (Martial Artist)
7. Elandir Moonblood - 1 Oracle (haven't played this one yet, but I am considering the whole paladin/oracle combo)
8. Prax the Brazen - 2 Bloodrager (going into dragon disciple)
That would make 3/8 currently multiclassed and 5/8 if you count the ones who will multiclass later on.

I have 10 characters registered right now, and only one of them is currently multiclassed, and that character only has a single level of Gunslinger to go with his 7 levels of Paladin, to make him an ersatz Holy Gun. My first character was multiclassed for most of her 'life', but once the retraining rules were allowed, I trained her out of her other class.
Of course, my method for building characters is to come up with some sort of rough idea of how I picture the character and what it can do, and then matching that with a class for the first couple of levels. Contrast this with people who plan their 11-level builds prior to character creation. I also tend to find my characters aren't as optimised as some others, so perhaps these things go hand in hand.
dwayne germaine |
Only my first character is multi-classed at this point, He started with one level in Barbarian and now is going pure alchemist until I can take Master Chymist levels.
My plan for my inquisitor and bard is to go single class for their entire careers, but you never know... characters sometimes take on a life of their own beyond initial plans.
My Halfling fighter will start taking levels in Golden Legionnaire once he get all the prerequisites.

I seem to multi-class more often than not.

ranger 2/rogue 4/pathfinder delver 7 [snarky elf]
sorcerer 11 <infernal>/oracle 1 <flame>/hellknight signifer 3 [former calstrian party girl]
alchemist 7/oracle 1 <flame> [hyper halfling mad bomber]
magus 14 <blackblade> [half orc/taldan noble]
monk 5 <monk of the 4 winds>/cleric 3 [glaive swinging dancer who follows Shelyn]
inquisitor 10/ranger 1 [smiter for Torag - a dwarf]
swashbuckler 4 [ifrit, going Aldori Swordlord eventually]
summoner 10 [dhampir]
ninja 6 [gnomish tailor & kabuki artist]
fighter 5/bard 1/shadow dancer 2 [tien pit fighter, going dragon disciple for the final 4 levels]
barbarian 3 <invulnerable rager>/oracle 2 <metal> [shoanti, follows Gorum, eventual rage prophet]
ranger 2/bard 5 [kitsume, pirate archetypes for both classes]
cavalier 4 [kellid half-orc, eventually splashing barbarian, then mammoth rider]
druid 3 [idyllkin aasimar, with a giant slug companion]
wizard 7 [human necromancer]
shaman 1 [undine - nothing special yet]

While most of mine are full classed I do have a few with dips in Other classes.
Of note:
Jayden Joysword 2 monk/10 urban barbarian. Very tanky for a barbarian
Skiarrah 1 sorc/11 winter witch ( only because irrisen icemage needs a lvl 1 sorc as prerequisite
Natasha 7 rogue/5 master spy
Planning on 5 fighter/ 7 living monolith
My lunar oracle is thinking of dipping 1 level into either cavalier or fighter so she can use a lance while riding her tiger

pauljathome wrote:You posted a lot of fun-sounding class combinations, but I'm curious about this one. It sounds like it would be cool. Why was it a mistake?
Bard/swashbuckler (what a mistake :-( )
Basically, the swashbuckler just doesn't do its job (front line ftr) at low levels. Not if he is Dex and Cha based anyway.
So the character ended up fragile and not hitting very hard. Far, far worse than my dawnflower dervish/urban barbarian was at the same levels.
Both sessions I actually played him (I used GM credit to start him at level 2) he was pretty worthless. One session the level 1 Merisiel was doing more damage. I don't think panache actually accomplished anything either session.
I haven't quite decided whether to just retire him or to give it enough GM credit to get it to level 5 or so (likely retraining the bard level) and see if it is useful at that point. But even then it probably under performs compared to a straight barbarian (whether urban or normal). But at least it may be playable without being a burden on the party.

Ok, so here's my characters:
Lafethalyn Tahlsar - Bonded Witch 3, dead, but I was planning for him to be an Eldritch Knight.
Andraste - Purifier Oracle 5 (6 soon), my plan with her is Oracle until 7th, then multiclass into Hellknight Signifier.
Rinne - Razmirian Priest/Sylvan Wildblooded Sorcerer 8, she will stay pure until retirement, after which I have a few prestige classes I am considering, namely a few levels of Tattooed Mystic.
Talfryn - Guntank Gunslinger 1/Empyreal Wildblooded Sorcerer 1/Eldritch Knight 2 - planning as many levels of Eldritch Knight as possible, post retirement he might become a Hellknight Signifier.
Marcèl Lebeda Swashbuckler 2 - may or may not multiclass into the Aldori Swordlord Prestige class, also tempted to leave him at level 2 until ACG comes out.
I have a few other plans that I have yet to start playing, including an Arcanist/Rogue/Arcane Trickster that may or may not see the light of day prior to the release of the ACG.

I started mine at level 3 and he worked pretty well.
I know its cookie cutter, but the dip into a level of dervish dancing bard really, REAALLY helps the character. Dex to hit and damage , some mobility and spell options (feather step, expeditious retreat, vanish) ,ability to use a wand of clw the +2 to the much needed will save, and the dancing bard bonus if you find yourself with an action to spare. The damage doesn't look that great on paper, but when you can parry riposte recover penache on crit recover penache on kill it really starts to add up.

Yeah, my swashbuckler 2/sorcerer 2 seems pretty powerful. By provoking an AoO from movement, she can parry/riposte then cast a spell. It is like playing a spontaneous magus.

Maybe I just had bad luck but I ran out of panache very quickly. Even with a Cha of 16. Even with Dervish Dancing I just wasn't doing enough damage (1d6 + 6).

This thread has me wondering how much multiclassing everyone is doing with their PFS characters. You can include all classes you PLAN on taking for the character, not just current levels (the other thread counts current levels, but I'm more interested in total builds).
1) Was straight class, but forced rebuild resulted in Summoner/Dragon Disciple (5/6)
2) Ranger/Rogue/Horizon Walker (7/4/3)4) Wizard (Transmuter)/Monk of the Four Winds (11/2)
5) Cleric/Paladin/Ranger/Holy Vindicator (5/2/1/3) [My least favorite character to play, at least in regards to combat.]
7) Bard (Arcane Duelist)/Magus (Kensai) (2/8)
8) Alchemist (Grenadier)/Wizard (Evoker) (5/1)
10) Inquisitor/?
The Dragon Disciple would keep going in the Prestige Class. Ability score boosts are huge, but I just want her to be more dragon.
The trapfinding Ranger would likely stay Ranger for any future levels.
The Arcane Monk is really now just a wizard with evasion. So keep going wizard.
The 'Cleralagider' (Holy Vindicator) is such a mutt that I don't know if anything could save him.
The Bard/Magus (built so I could have a PC who I thought approximated a swashbuckler)...I'm thinking of finishing her with more levels of magus. But there isn't much of a drawback to taking more levels of bard.
The Alchemist/Wizard is really just an Alchemist who can cast a handful of spells (and doesn't need to UMD for wizard scrolls).
The Inquisitor is likely to pick up a level of Barbarian at some point just so he can access to Amplified Rage as a teamwork feat. Otherwise, I have no idea what to do with him.
At some point I'll get around to building my Ninja/Paladin.
Nefreet |
I tend to think of myself as a purist. I usually pick a class and stick with it, whether it's Society or not.
That said, 3 of my 12 characters are multiclassed:
Gunslinger-8/Fighter-4 (retired, and done playing)
Fighter-9/Barbarian-2 (will do 1 more level as Fighter)
Ranger-2/Bard-1 (will go Ranger for the rest of his career)
Jason Wu |
I don't think any of my characters have been single classed. In the last 25 years. At least, not if multiclassing was available. I like figuring out wierd combos that synergise well.
One of my Living Force characters ended up with 11 classes. And was still pretty useful, due to Force powers being largely skill based rather than class based.
Of my PFS characters, 1 has 4 classes, 1 has 3 classes, and the remaining 4 have 2 classes. On has two of the hybrid classes from the ACG playtest.
-j
Leathert |
Let's see. I think I lean more towards single classes because I'm still learning which combos are good. But I do have a couple of multiclassed characters.
Barbarian (drunken brute) 4/ Alchemist (Beastchemist) 4. The one of my characters who actually does decend damage. Alchemist/barbarian has been done before, I know, but there aren't any others in my gaming area, so she still feels nice and fresh.
Ninja 4/ Envenomed Sorcerer 2. It might be because she is a gnome, but this character doesn't seem to get anything useful done. The idea was to see whether poisons could be a base for a concept in PFS, the conclusion seems to be nope. She is sneaky as heck, true, but that doesn't help much when she does pitiful damage.
Then I also have single-classed paladin, cleric, druid, monk and inquisitor.
Altus Lucrim |
-1 Conjurer 13 Altus
-2 Paladin 6 Sanzar
-3 Druid 7 Zoismos (may start multiclassing him, He has all mounted combat feats so Cavalier seems good for about 4 lvls, rides his roc)
-4 Ninja 8 Leonardo
-5 Cleric 4 Dr. Acula (dhampir)
-6 Invulnerable Rager 11 Logan
-7 Oracle 6 Michael Angelo
-8 Ragechemist 3, Invulnerable Rager 4, David Banner (if your counting 1 multiclass)
-9 Summoner 11 Tatsou
-10 Gunslinger 5 Wukus
-11 Xblood Sorc 1, Wizard 8 Nos S'koht (Thats 2)
-12-18 have chronicles but not been played so they are putty.

nosig |
here goes: (are we sure we should count Prest. Classes as an extra class? you can't be JUST an Arcane Trickster for example...)
1) Rogue - with a dip in Wizard & Patherfinder Delver (8/1/1)
2) Cleric only (14)
3) Bard only (11)
4) Alchemist only (11)
5) Rogue - with a dip to fighter (8/1)
6) Rogue/Wizard/Arcane Trickster (3/3/4)
7) Cleric - dip to tanky fighter (9/1)
8) Cav/Ftr/Pal - 4/1/1
9) Bard only (5)
10) Alchemist only (7) (retired)
11) Alchemist only (5)
12) Witch only (4)
and three GM Babies (one is a bard)...
so, 12 PCs, 5 are multi class - but 3 of those are just a dip and one is a prest. class... So I'd say I really only have one true Multi-class.
(edit: anyone else noticing that most of the Multi-s are martial types and most of the single classes are caster types? Not counting Prest. classes)
BigNorseWolf |
edit: anyone else noticing that most of the Multi-s are martial types and most of the single classes are caster types? Not counting Prest. classes
Makes sense. All a martial loses is really bab, and if the other class is also a full bab class they lose... nothing. Spell progression is EVERYTHING to a caster though.
Vrog Skyreaver |
I'm actually the far end of the spectrum the other way:
I have 7 characters, 4 of which are single classed, one of which is a gm credit baby, and one I tore up cause he made it no fun to play the game.
wizard (air elementalist) 15
monk (martial artist) 9
cleric (hidden priest of Rovagug who pretends to be a bard) 7
oracle (metal) 11 (12 after Saturday!)
Fighter (Viking archetype) 6/Horizon Walker 3
my torn up character was a kensai magus/urban barbarian level 13, and my gm baby (level 2) character was going to be a swashbuckler, but they're towards the super high-end of powerful when played correctly, and I think I wanna do a different ACG class instead).
Mystically Inclined |
Hm. Let's see.
2- Sorcerer 5/Oracle (Heavens) 1
3- Barbarian 6
4- GM Credit Baby. (Gonna be heavily multiclassed for a specific fanfighter build)
5- Summoner 5
6- GM Credit Baby. Arcanist.
7- GM Credit Baby. Undecided.
8- Fighter 4
9- Magus X
Non-PFS: MoMS Monk 2/Fighter (Brawler) x
Non-PFS: Dawnflower Dervish Soundstriker Bard 1/Urban Barbarian 1/Martial Artist Monk 1/DD Bard x
So out of 10 builds that are in progress or planned, I either go straight or dip one or two levels if I think it'll improve the build. The exception is my fanfighter, which is going to involve at least 2 levels in 3 or 4 classes in order to be viable.
