Utak, here are two of the orcish dieties, one is a typical bloodthirsty elf-hating sort, and the other represent the more peaceful, shamanistic of the orcs.
Grol-Chen
Warlord of the Orcs, CE
Domains: War, Orc, Evil
Portfolio: Bloodlust, Hate, Destruction, War
Favored Weapon: Hand Axe
Grol-Chen enjoy nothing more than to wage endless, unceasing war. A gathering of his followers is never peaceful, always involves violence, and typiucally ends with one of two dead. Quick, direct, violent, and an utter lack of compassion are things praised by the warrior priests of Grol-Chen.
Ulati
Warden of Orc-Kind, N
Domains:[b] Strength, Luck, Protection
[b]Portfolio:[b] Survival, Strength, Peace
[b]Favored Weapon: Javelin
A powerful orc that went against the grain of normal Orc-Kind, Ulati sought to make peace with the humans his folk had slaughtered. He Helped to rebuild their fallen city while enduring their insults and thrown object. When his people came back, he helped the humans to fight them off, but was killed in the battle. He has since been worshiped as a god by other orcs and half-orcs that see their brethren as being wrong in their ways.

Demm the Editing time limit. Right when I discovered the lack of a / in one of the bold marks my power goes out.
So, anyone else want to join up? I've got one more open slot for the party, and I can be coerced into opening another (Hint: I like cookies).
If anyone currently in the party, or wanting to be in the party, or just plain curious wants to know anything more about the setting, post here. I won't yell at you if you just want to hear some of my ideas, as long as you don't make me spoil anything for the players.
Besides, more posts means this stays at the top for longer.

Mostly, general feel of the world. I know you said it was going to be Lovecratian-esque, but how are the inhabitants? Mostly hard working, upbeat individuals, happily unawares of the horrors that lurk in the shadows? Downtrodden, feck the world types?
Are there ruins of a brighter age? Is there signs that there's something not quite right about the world?
Yanno, that sorta thing.
Hammith DM |
Outside of a few mad men, cultists, and unfortunate heroes, the darker influences in the world are invisible. They are there, lurking in the shadows, but they are not unseen. Rather, the ordinary people of the world refuse to see them. The horrors are viewed as things that can still fit within their ideas of reality: illusions, nightmares, plagues, infernos, and more. Are they always dark horrors from beyond? Of course not, but more often than one would think it is.
The presence of magic in the world as a known force further confuses the existence of these shadowy, otherworldly beings. Even those that have seen them and lived to tell cannot truly convince themselves that what they saw wasn't some strange application of magic.
The story I hope to draw the group into is one of deception, greed, and worse. You will not deal directly with the great darkness beyond the veil for some time, only receive brief and explainable glimpses into the deeper madness that loosely grips small portions of the world. If you survive, the last parts of the campaign will make your characters see things that were not meant for mortal eyes, and discover secrets that defy everything they took to be true.
All things considered, the world is as pleasant (if not more so) than the Earth we know except for those that discover certain truths.

OK, I'm ready to go. My background is in my profile, but I'll post it here as well.
Background
The rest of my childhood was spent in an orphanage, I assume after my parents died. But being one of the smallest kids there, and somewhat socially awkward, I was the frequent target of bullying. Sure, the kindly old lady who ran the orphanage was nice enough, but she was naïve as to what happened after she retired for the evening. Suffice to say I was often the target of the bigger kids. I tried to compensate by retreating into a world of knowledge and reading, but that only seemed to make me a bigger target. As soon I was able to steal a few silvers, I ran away, figuring life on the streets would have to be better than there.
And for a (short) while it was. This was the first time I didn’t have to constantly be on my guard. However, it didn’t last long, and after only a few days I had quickly run through my meagre finances, and was now cold, hungry and alone with no immediate prospects of improving my situation.
For perhaps the only time in my life, luck was on my side, and I ended up falling in with the local street gang. However, soon again, my small stature and social awkwardness came to the fore, and I never seemed to be able to climb off the bottom of the totem pole. Every time a new “recruit” joined us, I would think it finally my chance to move up, but within no time at all they would move past me on the pecking order. It seemed that the easiest way to advance was at my expense.
Despite this hardship I was able to eventually scrape together enough coin to sit the entrance exam to the local wizards academy. It with dreams of emulating my father, which I had kept alive for years, I took the test, hoping against hope to be successful. To everyone’s surprise (including my own), I topped the test, and was accepted with a full scholarship.
Finally I thought, here among people like myself (smaller of stature and likewise socially awkward), I would finally find acceptance. How wrong I was. It was worse than the orphanage. Most of the students came from families with a rich magical tradition, who looked down on a poor upstart with now arcane tradition or background. Only this time, those bullying me also had access to magic.
I however, was determined that nothing would stand in my way, and simply applied my self more diligently to my studies. My studies were a raging success, and not only was I now topping the class, I was also among the teachers favourites. Unsurprisingly, this only intensified the bullying, but I was determined to at least see out graduation.
However, one evening, only two weeks before our final assessment was to begin, I was subject to an unforgivable prank. I really don’t want to go into the details, I will leave it up to your imagination, and say it was worse than anything you can imagine. Suffice to say I snapped. Not realising the fury they had unleashed, my attackers retired for the evening, leaving me alone. I waited until I was sure they were all asleep. The gathering my meagre possessions, I crept up to the ringleaders bed, and stabbed him in the heart with a pilfered kitchen knife. Overcome with what I had just done, I fled, foolishly leaving the knife behind, and determined to complete my magical “education” on my own.
Personality
I would really like to start the campaign with Jabari already having befriended one of the party. I am thinking of Firathar if you don't mind Sect. I'm sure we can come up with a reason for them to meet up. Let me know what you think.
Hammith DM: Feel free to do what you want with any of that background. My parents don't have to be dead, neither does the student I attacked. Also, feel free to put the Wizard Academy wherever it makes sense, I am happy to have fled my "home" city, or to still be hanging around there.

No problem Utak, I haven't exactly been all that regular on the boards lately thanks to working on the adventure for this thing myself. I'm hoping to finish up in the next couple of days on the key points of it and start it up soon. I'll be happy to take it nice and slow for as long as it takes for you to get your arm back and working.
If you start feeling like you can't do stuff for a while we can post-pone the game for a bit while you heal up.

I have been thinking a bit about Jabari, and I am going to instead make him a straight Wizard (Conjurer), using the Rapid Summoning option from UA
Any time a conjurer using this variant casts a summon monster spell, its casting time is 1 standard action rather than 1 full round. (Creatures so summoned can only take a standard action in the round they are summoned.) Conjurers using this variant gain the normal benefits from enhancing a summon monster spell with the Quicken Spell feat.
A conjurer using this variant permanently gives up the ability to obtain a familiar.
I know it isn't in your list of allowed books, but any chance of being able to use the master specialist PrC from Complete Mage? If not, it's cool, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
I'll try to get my character updated in the next couple of days, but the background will stay basically the same.

Thanks for the kind words
Thanks for your understanding Hammith,
I was at the hospital today for a check up. All is looking good. I most likely will not slow the game down at all. I am being slightly weened off my painkillers so I feel more like myself and awake. I can move my fingers. I am still typing with one hand, but it is not so uncomfortable any more, and I have my left arm propt on the table and I am able to press the shift key for capital letters. Thanks for your willingness to slow the game down, but now Tunk is ready to smash something.
Cheers

Hammith,
I've been looking over my character a bit, and I found that the flaw I took doesn't make too much sense.
The idea was, the burns that my character took in her earlier years caused a bit of muscle damage, making it harder for her to aim or throw with a steady hand. However, this doesn't seem to make much sense, since that could also affect her melee or shield blocking techniques.
So, I was thinking, could we custom make a flaw to give her a waryness of fire? It makes sense, since that's the first thing she remembers, anyways. Something like Will saves when there's fire about against fear, or something like that.

First off I'd like to apologize about my lack of posts as of late. It's the start of the school season for me, so things have been all "AAAAHH! MY HEAD'S ON FIRE" lately. I'll be starting the game on Monday evening thanks to an arduously late night at work. I don't particularly expect any of you to post until Tuesday-ish, but if you surprise me I'll be ok with that.
Mevers: I have access to the Complete Mage, so I'll just borrow it for the game once you get to the point of the PrC. I don't have anything against the books that I don't allow, I just don't have easy access to them most of the time.
Sect: How about one that needs a will save or you become shaken until you are outside sight of the fire? Not too sure what would be an aproriate will save, but 15 seems like an ok starting point. I may adjust it later depending on the effectiveness/ineffectiveness of it.

Sure. I'll work on the details of the flaw, and give it to you by Sunday.

Cool, thanks. I'll get my character updated tonight.

I shall now begin writing up the first post for the adventure. Look for a thread to pop up sometime within the next hour or two with Twisting Darkness in the title somewhere.
If your character still needs a few mechanical issues worked out, it should be a little while until things outside of skill checks will be needed, so try to get those first.
Of course, if Utak feels like starting a barfight, things might get messy faster. ;)

Man, that post was hell to write. I'm upset with the second part, but that's mostly because the letter was tiring to write.
Are you all right with that, Mevers?
Also, I need to add some items to my character... mostly mundane equipment.
That was pretty good mate, I am more than happy with it.

Just wanted to appologize for my lack of posts, the first week of school was much more tiring than I thought it would be. Most likely because my summer was spent being a desk-jockey. Hopefully I'll be posting on a regular basis from now on, except possibly on Wednesdays.

No prob. Responsibility is a double-edged sword. I am enjoying what you have given us so far.
To Beginnings.

You didn't really get any converts Artaris, just a few younger teens that seemed interested in the speech. Most of the people in the city are extremely jaded about gods in general at the moment, what with the priests locking themselves away from the rest of the city to protect themselves rather than help the citizens.

... Are we still playing?
Sect,
Glad to see you're still with us. I think this game has been dead for quite awhile now. Good to hear from you though.
