A strange message beckons six strangers to Striving, an expansive megaplex city on Aballon, the planet of Machines. There, they gather in a neon-lit cafe, surrounded by androids and robots, to meet an old friend. The bartender brings them refreshments—and a holographic recording from their mutual acquaintance.

"Greetings, friends! If you’re watching this, it’s because I’ve experienced an unexpected shutdown—in organic terms, I’m dead."

The discovery of their friend’s unexpected murder turns these strangers into a crew of unlikely investigators. To find the killer, they’ll need to outrun murderous robots, outwit clever foes, and analyze perplexing clues—all while wondering if they’re hunting the murderer, or if the murderer is hunting them! The streets of Striving can be an unforgiving place, and the investigators will need all their skills, resources—and no small amount of luck—to come out ahead, solve the murder, find the killer’s hideout, and bring them to justice!

Murder in Metal City is a deluxe introductory boxed set adventure for four 1st-level Starfinder Second Edition characters containing numerous tools to assist GMs, including player and creature tokens, an immersive poster-sized double-sided battle map, investigation handouts, item cards, NPC cards, and a GM reference sheet and investigation tracker—everything required for a premium adventure experience!

Murder in Metal City features:

  • Six new pregenerated characters with player handouts, one for each class from the Starfinder Player Core.
  • A double-sided tactical Starfinder Flip-Mat featuring key locations from the adventure.
  • Articles about the machine planet Aballon and the megaplex city of Striving.
  • One new playable alien ancestry: khizars, the plant-like protectors of Aballon’s jungle-filled Ice Wells.
  • An article detailing the tech faiths of the Starfinder universe, from deities like Triune and Lambatuin to the unique philosophies of the robotic anacites.
  • Multiple pages of creature stat blocks and NPC descriptions for the combat and roleplaying encounters in the adventure.

An awesome adventure for the Deluxe adventures

4/5

I received Murder in Metal City this morning and unpacked it right away. I was curious, as I had heard some negative feedback about the product’s quality on the internet.

The box contains a sheet of Pog-style tokens, handouts with information that players will discover throughout the adventure, illustrated cards for NPC or equipment (with descriptions on the back), and of course the Murder in Metal City scenario itself.

In my opinion, the critics I'v heard regarding quality are totally unfair and too harsh. While the finish is not quite up to the standards I’ve come to expect from Paizo, the product is excellent. A few points stood out to me:

Some of the handouts and cards weren’t cut very cleanly, with slightly dented corners here and there.

The handouts and character cards are printed on fairly thin paper, so they wear out quickly.

The included flip-mat is also printed on thinner stock than the usual flip-mats, and will likely get damaged more easily.

I would suggest that Paizo consider offering free downloadable PDFs of the maps, handouts, and character cards. That would be a great compromise between keeping the product affordable and ensuring its long-term reusability.

As for the scenario itself, I think it’s excellent: a science-fiction mystery set on Aballon that can be played in two or three evening. While this isn’t an “intro box” (since it doesn’t contain simplified rulebook), it’s clearly written for new players and GMs in mind. The situations are straightforward enough for beginners, while still providing fun, intrigue, and that spark of Starfinder’s signature wild creativity.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with this product and excited to run it. It also makes me look forward to "Dawn of the Frog" for Pathfinder 2E. Personally, I find these boxes more appealing than the Beginner Boxes, and I hope Paizo continues to release more products like this in the future.

Thank you, Paizo!

Very hype for this! I love khizars and I'm pretty interested in the tech faiths, win win.

Aballon and Triune, what a treat! I'd love to hear more about what Epoch was like.

Horizon Hunters

In PF2e when we had an ancestry released in an adventure (Shoony) it kinda got left with no support in future releases (extra feats, heritages etc). Will the Khizar start with a larger range of options than the Shoony did, just in case?

They very specifically said that it is not. This Deluxe Adventure will not include a condensed ruleset, you will need Player Core to run it. It will contain all of the enemy statblocks (because Alien Core comes out later). Thurston Hillman did mention that a Beginner Box was a good idea, though, so we might see one later on.

Shoony stands out as the only PF2 adventure-released ancestry. Starfinder is going to be very intentionally including ancestries in just about every adventure. With so many ancestries, I'm not really expecting them to go back and add options to all of them individually later, but I would expect them to be created with the benefits of more experience, making sure there's at least one or two level 17 options, etc. Khizar also has the benefit of already existing in the lore with SF1 stats, which can't hurt.

The description says "including player and creature tokens" How is this different from the old pawns? Are these going to be round cardboard tokens instead of pawns with stands? One advantage of that would be the art would be easily transferable to VTTs

I really like the idea of everything you need for an adventure in one box!

Really looking forward to playing this!

Loving the idea of everything you need to play an adventure in one box. It's a great way to get a premium product on store shelves that isn't just another hardback that will get lost in the shuffle, and it's an awesome value for that price.

This looks super fun! Will there be a PDF-only version of the adventure, or is it just the deluxe box set?

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I thought that announcing the Mechanic and Technomancer playtest so early was a bit weird, but it makes sense. I expect that some will want to play those classes with this adventure, even if they aren't 100% complete yet. This lets the fanbase know they'll have that option, so that there isn't a constant stream of complaints.

First off, glad to see this is getting a Foundry module:
https://foundryvtt.com/packages/sf2e-murder-in-metal-city

That said, I'd really like Paizo to estimate how many session this is supposed to fill (or how many levels of play it covers). It's hard to rope in GMs or players if no one knows if it'll run 2 or 12 sessions....

From what I heard on this stream, Roadmap To The Stars, after the 24 minutes mark (link time-stamped), it's a 60 pages adventure all happening at level 1, so no level up, despite it having as much content as other adventure books (like Plaguestone for PF2 gets to level up twice in the same amount of pages), but here they are trying something new.

Its also hard to gauge a number of sessions. Different groups have different length of session, and different amounts of banter, roleplay, meandering, etc that can all contribute to session length.

We're honestly just genuinely unsure right now! We haven't done adventures like this before outside of playtesting, so it's hard for us to know how long a session of non playtesters would take! Our best guess is "a handful," but we can't really get precise. Hopefully, when it's released and some of the community tries it out, they can weigh in!

Minor request.

The pregen characters that are included, could those Character Sheets be designed like the actual Pregen characters on the website, instead of like the versions in Free RPG Day?

You know, with the descriptions of exactly what the abilities do already included on the card, without having to double over to a different book.

It's a silly little thing, but when it comes to level 1 Pregens, I've found them most frequently used to teach new players. Experienced people who know what those abilities do, they brought their own character most of the time.

And as a regular Convention GM at live cons, having a couple of heavy cardstock versions that actually have the instructions to help you play the character, that is massively valuable when trying to teach a new player without slowing down the table too much for everyone else.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Pathfinder Starfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Free RPG Day has to fit everything into one 16 page booklet, while this explicitly mentions having player handouts, so I think its safe to assume that it will be closer to the beginner box pregens.

Will this count towards Starfinder Society GM tables?

Since Starfinder 2e isn't getting any GM incentive program, it would be nice if the Starfinder 2e tables still counted towards our Starfinder 1e Novas.

I still feel like we don't have such a flood of GMs that the GM Incentive Program needed to be eliminated. But I suppose Paizo has the metrics on their side and must have realized that too many people wanted to be the GMs and nobody really wanted to be the players, so they needed to remove the very small reward for GMing.

The whole adventure is played at 1st level. It has about the same amount of content as a 3 level adventure, but all in level 1. I guess the PCs would probably be ready to level up to lvl 2 at the end of it all. xD

What incentive does a GM have to run SFS 2e games then?

The incentive program has changed, but it's not going away.

We do want to make sure we’re rewarding our dedicated GMs and recognizing those who go above and beyond for the program. However, what we don’t want to even tacitly encourage is the practice of rushing to that top rank and being one of the first GMs with the highest recognition. We’ve seen too many GMs in Pathfinder Society burn themselves out and drop shortly after achieving this goal, and the easiest way to prevent it, in our minds, is simply not to put it in front of you until a later date.

It's fun? You still get GM Chronicles, you still get other rewards, you're just not sure how many tables it will take until you get space donuts because they think that not telling you if the number is 25 or 30 will slow people down.

The tokens are double sided cardboard circles, roughly the size of a nickel. They don't stand up. I suppose they do carry the advantage of being easily transferable to VTTs, but as a tangible item to use during actual tabletop play, pawns definitely have them beat. I am not sure why they swapped it up on, perhaps just a cost saving measure, but I hope it does not become the standard.

That's not a problem - you're allowed to generate the chronicles once the sanctioning has been released (assuming it will be).
