Taking a much-needed relaxing break in between escapades, four gun-toting adventurers post up in a dingy bar in one of Alkenstar's entertainment districts. Right across the street at a theater, people flood inside to catch the premiere of a highly-advertised play, but what comes out of the theater is far more dangerous. As people scatter to safety in the dusty streets, its up to the group of gunslingers in the bar to set things right.

This short Pathfinder 2nd edition adventure written by Michael Sayre is intended to be completed in a single session and includes four 3rd-level pregenerated gunslinger characters, who make use of the exciting new equpment and rules found in Pathfinder Guns & Gears, whose backstories and motivations tie closely to one another. This adventure can be easily incorporated into various virtual tabletops, run off of digital devices, or printed out and played at a table.

"Head-Shot the Rot" is sanctioned for use in Pathfinder Society Organized Play. The rules for running this Adventure and Chronicle sheet are available as a free download (963 kb PDF).

Pregenerated characters for this adventure are also available as a free download

A Solid One-Shot

4/5

This one-shot delivers on its promise: "go shoot zombies!"

Full disclosure: I ran this as a home-game with custom PCs, so I'm not sure how the experience of the all-gunslinger pregen party would differ.

My minor quibbles are that the final encounter (especially if enemies' tactics are followed exactly as written) is underwhelming difficulty-wise and there isn't really an option for the players to discover more about the villain's motivation unless the villain monologues. Added clues that the players could find and then perhaps even use in the final encounter would've been neat.

Additionally, the tension would have been improved by having an additional complication when exploring the various buildings: e.g., NPC in danger.

So Close to Greatness!

4/5

This adventure delivers what it promises: a fight against hordes of zombies. It is a very much fun time, and the optional rule given (instant zombie kills on critical hits) developed some hilarious fun on my table. The setting of Alkenstar is very much beloved by the fandom, and the flip mat is quite stellar.

It is, however, not perfect. The AP could do with more varied enemies and rewarding loot. It also didn't give NPCs a lot to play with. I personally added an infected survivor, and two people fighting for canned food - ya know, the usual zombie movie tropes. I think you could have a lot of fun with this one, if you're willing to work with what's given NPC-wise.

TL; DR-This is what I want more of. 100%

Basics- AIM FOR THE HEAD! Head Shot the Rot is a one-shot drop-in game for four PCs set in Alkenstar. It’s a glorious “Kill the bad guys, save everyone!” kind of adventure.

Mechanics or Crunch- This is Night of the Living Dead in Pathfinder. You have some zombies and you have some people. You get some skill checks, some combat, and some social. That’s all the pieces of the game I want. And I’m happy! It’s solid mechanics with 3rd level PCs and some monsters that can tear them up if they screw up, but enough firepower to make sure that doesn't happen. Finely balanced as all things should be. 5/5

Theme or Fluff- You start in a bar with your buds, bad happens, and you kill it. Save the people, get the money. That’s the story and there is enough in the adventure and maps to build that into a fun place to play and explore even if you don’t go far. The PCs and I had a blast with this one. 5/5

Execution- It’s Paizo. They know how to lay out a book, make nice art, make it easy to read, and get me the information I need in a hurry. It’s 10 bucks, which is a bit pricey, but it filled four hours. This beats the movie test of if I went to the movies with the same friends, would we spend more. So, I don't feel ripped off here. It comes with art, maps, and PCs - all the toys I need to literally just drop in Roll20 and play. 5/5

Summary- Some days you crave Game of Thrones level intrigue, and others you just want a bunch of zombies, a gun, and a goal. This is the latter. I loved everything here. It’s a fun one shot where all the players get what they want out of this, while I had fun and did not need hours of prep before. Hey Paizo! Make more of these, and then connect them to each of the adventure paths. I’d buy them! 100%

Good one nighter that could be a great two parter

4/5

As mentioned by another reviewer- without giving your players some upfront knowledge of whats about to happen or some sort of lore inserted into the game for them to come across , it's just going to be "suddenly waves of zombies attack!" which does the entire thing a bit of disservice.

the headshot mechanic is fun, and my gunslingers enjoyed feeling like aces instead of worrying if it was going to be misfire night.

A solid one-shot that JUST misses the mark.

3/5

A good time that could have very easily been GREAT.

Pros:
+ The setup is fun and immediately engaging.
+ The pregen party is memorable and shows off the diversity of guns/gunslingers.
+ It's written to be streamlined and fast-paced.

Cons:
- Some character abilities are of limited/no use in the adventure as-written.
- NPC dialogue is a little stiff and doesn't leave much room for rewarding RP.
- Only three enemy types; a zombie brute would have been a good addition.
- Loot isn't great; the +1 piercing wind gets a lot of space dedicated to it in the text, but an upgraded bayonet/stock or special ammo like glue bullets would have been easier to implement.
- The villains have a neat little backstory, but it's never even hinted at to the players so they come off as nonentities.

Verdict:
With a little TLC from a solid GM, this one-shot can be a great time. But I wish it had gotten a little more work/polish to knock it out of the park.

I believe (and hopefully Aaron can straighten me out when he's back on the clock if I'm wrong) that it's releasing on October 27th.

Per the blog-

I love it, a full gunslinger party should be interesting.

Correct! Just working out the time of day.

Is that the final cover? Seems to be the same art piece from Guns & Gears, and the three key characters there don't correlate to the PCs in this one-shot, like what's found in Dinner at Lionlodge.

The long and the short of it is that the intended cover piece had some issues that couldn't be rectified in the timeframe called for with this adventure, so we had to use a substitute piece that at least embodied the tone and spirit, if not all the specifics, of this adventure.

(For anyone curious about this, the art shown at Gen Con featured people with modern guns and a neon-lit movie theater - it seemed like some wires got crossed for the artist when they heard “guns” and “theater.”)

Hey folks,

This One-Shot is now available for purchase!

Ah sad that its lvl 3, so Pistolero cant get Paired Shots, How do the Pregens look in this one?

So I noticed almost all of the streamer-friendly art files and separated maps (tagged and untagged) from the first 2 One-Shots are missing from this one. The .ZIP file only contains the adventure and the pre-gens, with the other parsed-out image files missing. Was this intentional? I was looking forward to possibly running a stream of this One-Shot during the Halloween weekend.

I do not think it was intentional and we have elevated this issue to the product developer for inquiry.

Wait, does that mean the current file size is much smaller than the previous One Shots?

For anyone who has this, what are the characters like? I love reading up on pregens, and I'm especially curious about the elf in this bunch.

EDIT: Nevermind - with the union recognized, I can buy this for myself! The elf is not Vourinoi, as I'd thought - none of the pregens are from Alkenstar (which is a shame, IMO) - but is in fact from Jinin. She has a mithril tree, which basically looks like a Keyblade from Kingdom Hearts. I like her the most of the bunch!

Zakzak is a goblin in all the ways I don't personally love, Doc seems pretty cool, and I'm actually decently fond of Booker - though I wish his art made him look Vudrani, as his writeup seems to imply.

The gunslinger has "improved initiative" as a general feat, which i assume means incredible initiative. This doesnt Stack with the pistoleros "ten paces" as both are circumstance bonuses

If we're talking about the ZakZak pregen, RAW, Improved Initiative doesn't exist in PFS-2e. Several have said they assume it means Improved Initiative. Why would it mean that, when it makes no sense in conjunction with Ten Paces? Barring an errata from Paizo, I would hope GM's would allow a legitimate PFS-2e General Feat to replace one that simply doesn't exist as currently written.

On a related topic, Ten Paces requires a one-handed weapon, yet inexplicably ZakZak doesn't have one. It makes no sense to introduce the Gunslinger class in a shiny new One-Shot with a pregen who can't take advantage of his own abilities. Hopefully, GMs allow players to swap out for an appropriate weapon, if desired.

With luck, Paizo will have an errata available before too long.

Definitely hoping for an errata soon. I'm planning on running this on the 7th for some PF2E newbies, and I just skimmed the four sheets. Zakzak's character concept makes great sense, as a goblin using a goblin gun, the flingflenser. The only issue is that that's a 2 handed weapon, which doesn't work with Pistolero; definitely more of a Vanguard.

In addition, Booker's sheet gives him a dwarven scattergun, also 2H, but his art piece has him wielding what looks closer to be a 1H gun. Maybe they decided to swap Ways after the art was done? Would definitely like some clarification.

Is "Head Shot" a verb? Shouldn't it be called "Head Shoot the Rot"?

I didnt even realise flinglenser Was twohanded. Would make sense if he was the vanguard.

Technically you can still use the pistolero reload with a twohanded weapon so the character still somewhat works. Also if ten paces doesnt work with twohanded, i guess incredible initiative wouldnt be useless

Zakzak was written when G&G was still in development and had a late cycle way swap during adventure development that shook up some of his abilities. I'll follow up with the developer today and see if we can get him appropriately updated.

My understanding is that it's in queue and the updated file just needs to be pushed to the website. The quick summary is that Zakzak has a spoon gun instead of a flingflenser and he has 3 more HP from taking Toughness instead of Incredible Initiative.

I'm sure it's too late for the file to he updated, but another point of note: I believe Booker's melee damage ought to use the increased d6 damage die due to the reinforced stock being on the two-handed dwarven scattergun, right?

Not without having connections to someone who does own the scenario (like the GM), no.

Yeah.

Honestly I did not know that the pregens for other One-Shots were available as a free downloads. I feel like that happened post-launch and so I did not ask that #3 launch that way. But I like it, it makes sense, and will place an order for that to occur.

He has the formula for black powder but otherwise the players are free to customize their formula loadout within the feat's parameters or GMs can assign a loadout, as appropriate to the venue.

The Chronicle only lists a firearm in the items list, does it also grant access to it's ammunition?
