Excellent Book

5/5

This is my favorite book released recently. Great lore sections on magic, lots of interesting spells and items. Both the Magus and the Summoner are great new classes that cover territory not previously explored.

I like the cover but dislike the spine. I can't have a consistent shelf with this updated spine. (Even the updated Special Cover has the odd font choice in the spine text.)

C'est la vie...

Wow i just saw and I like it! Maybe this symbols represent the megical schools. I count just 7 instead of the regular 8 schools.

The would-be 8th one was probably omitted to make room for the "Second Edition" in the upper right corner pocket.

From the 7 I see, 2 I can confidently guessing is in which school. Upper left corner pocket is adjuration, and right side pocket is necromancy. The rest are a toss-up (I thought bottom left corner pocket was divination, but the eye in the top side pocket could also be it, too. Or maybe that one is enchantment. Who knows???).

I think it's neat, if a bit busy and will probably vary from book to book moving forward, which does make the consistency-desiring part of my brain a bit whiny.
I do wonder if the inside trade dress is also changed to match.

There might be a full version of the cover inside the book that shows the covered 8th school.

Maybe this is why it was delayed, b/c they decided the change the cover and that pushed it back a month.

I understand the complaint of not having a unified spine look, but it was hard to get every printing to be perfectly matched color, which really stands out when you have 5-10 books side-by-side. By mixing it up it is less noticible that my second printing is a very slightly different shade of maroon then your first printing or my Bestiary, etc.

Very likely. This book is not part of the "core rules" of PF2, those are finished, and that is why it looks different.

Nope, they said it was sent to the printer on time. It was a delay caused by something outside of Paizo.

I've got mixed feelings about this cover. I think I would prefer consistency with previous rulebooks.

Though if this is the design style going forward beyond the Core Books, then I am excited to see what the finished cover of Guns & Gears will look like.

I love it. The change in style makes me really happy. Hoping it's a sign of a more permanent divergence between rulebook lines! At least as far as visuals go.

I really like this change in cover design. The existing books already look too different from one another sitting on my shelf next to each other just because the color shading on the spines is different. What's worse is that it looks unintentional, which I believe is a bad look. If the books aren't going to be consistently the same color as well as design, then I think the covers should look different in design on purpose (though still connected to the series as a whole in an apparent way) and that is what this change in design looks like to me. As for what it will look like next to the other books on the shelf, I think that I will hold my judgement until more books come out as it is too early to tell with just this one being so different so far. My first impression is that I like it and cannot wait to see what Guns & Gears will look like.

This is a VERY sick cover. I'm a huge fan, and interested to see if all non-core rulebooks look like this in the future or if they'll have their own unique designs.

I absolutely adore the cover, and hope the future rulebooks all follow a similar theme, one reason I buy the Paizo books is for the art after all.

I bet the hidden one is the illusion school.

I love the style of the new cover, and the spine. I really hope the post basic rules set books go this way.

I think it is a great discontinuation and makes sense. Because the basic first 6 books, all have a similar theme in the outlay. The books from here are in addition, special, not the basics.

So on my self, it will be easy to see and will stand out basic 6 rule books, and then the special extra advanced additional books.

I know this is purely subjective but that is my feeling on the style change.

Or divination, which was iirc the school that was not part of the Thassilonian approach to magic.

To me, the core books are the CRB and Bestiary. Then there's APG, GMG. Bestiary 2, and Bestiary 3 with the same cover design. I suppose you could call those core, but I don't think of them as such.

I'm ambivalent about the new style. We'll see. Maybe it'll grow on me. :-)

Huh. Anyone notice this cover looks different from the one shown in Erik's Paizocon segment? I like both, but I think I slightly prefer the briary aesthetic of the one shown in Erik's presentation. I wonder which one is the real cover.

The one shown by Erik is the real cover. The site's having ongoing issues updating the covers, so it's not coming up for us. Same thing is happening with the new cover for the 3rd volume of Fists of the Ruby Phoenix, and likely will happen for the new Guns & Gears and Night of the Gray Death covers.

Oh, I know the one showing up on the product page is mockup, but if you click the image, you'll see a cover with symbols for seven schools of magic and the same font as the one in Erik's video, but the latter version lacks the magical school iconography, and has a briary border instead.

For reference, here is the cover in Erik's presentation...

and here is the cover shown in the image link on this product page.

Looks like we reset this page back to the mock cover until any discrepancy is cleared up, but when in doubt, go with the one Erik showed. :)

Magus gets their Spell Strike recharge from using Focus Spells that give you a "special attack".

Magus gets new combat styles, including a spinning staff attack that strikes 2 enemies at once.
Spell energy can be turned into a special buff called Arcane Cascade.
The ability to gain a combat damage buff from the spells you cast is now a core feature of the class, instead of costing a feat.

Summoner is still pick-a-tradition. They are including a construct Eidolon. And the ability to evolve your Eidolons are still in.

Over 200 new spells are in the book. Tons of new magic items. Fulu talismans were mentioned on the Ruby Phoenix panel to be talismans you can slap on and use easily in the middle of combat, VS regular talismans needing time to affix them. New forms of magic include blood magic, new familiars, elemental magic, alternative magic systems, soul-bound weapons, Thassilonian rune magic, and more.

Much more info (2 back-to-back 1 hour panels) about Secrets of Magic will be happening today, starting at 1 PM PDT/4 PM EDT. Someone (more than likely The-Magic-Sword) will post details about the panels after they are over.

Gracias!!

Runelord Archetype..... yes please!

Summoners and Eidolons health are now one pool and considered Martial equivalent.

Can't wait to get my hands on this book, and then looking forward to the Book of the Dead! (perfect place to put that Blood Magic too I think)

@Aaron Shanks - Quick clarification on the release date, please. Is the expected release now late august or early august? You mentioned that it was delayed, but your later comment wasn't clear on if the erroneous information was regarding the delay or the reason for the delay.

While the product was originally announced for July, the release date is currently scheduled for August. I believe it will be the 25th, not the "PDF available Aug 5" status currently shown on this page. We have no August 5 release date to my knowledge. I will look into this and if I hear differently I will let you know.

Should we expect the "start the subscription with this book" option to be available July then?

Regarding covers, I am in favor of each book having its own cover according to what is most awesome for that specific book. Consistency is boring and overrated.

I am more excited about this book after Paizo Con than I was before. The Magus is growing on me. Might be top 3 classes. The new architype options seem interesting. I wonder if Guns and Gears will carry that idea over for martial characters.

1) Fighter and 2) Barbarian would be the other 2. I think Pathfinder 2 has the best version of Fighter and Barbarian than any other rpg.

No offense meant to Paizo, but 13th Age’s Fighter is tough to beat in terms of class fantasy.

Everyone has there prefs :)

And again cool spoiler panels last week Paizo team, quite looking forward to this for my player char then later for one of my groups to run STR of !000's . First being a player in it then running for one of my groups after playing the first mod or two.

So i've been seeing too many covers for secrets of magic. There is the first one, and then the second one which surprised everyone and it is super cool and then boom another version of the second one on PaizoCon. Which cover will be in the final version?

I think Paizo’s fighter holds its own as far as options to 13th Age. As far as class fantasy that is subjective thing. Do not want to side track this forum though. I wonder if the soulboud weapon//armor archetype is open to martial classes other than Paladin?

Not to start a thing, but keep in mind that soulforger and a lot of options in this book are rare or uncommon. Just before people get giddy about playing with an option in pfs or something.
