I hate waiting. Do you actually meet and have to treat with Nocticula in this one. From the description I would think yes put from hearing here abilities it is kinda weird as she could just make our group her slaves. Having mythic slaves would be a good thing.
You'll just have to wait and see :)

No, this module is about negotiating...if you were to run right into a battle with Shamira or Nocticula at this point in the adventure, you would be eviscerated in moments.
Shamira grants the domains of Chaos, Charm, Evil, and Nobility, and the subdomains of Demon, Leadership, Love, and Lust.
How about her favored weapon?

Based on what she's using in her stat block, longbow.

And I wonder if any of these nascent demon lords former rulers of the isles. An ingenius way for Noct to expand her realm....raise one of her minions to nascent lord status, kill them, and she gets a new island!

On another subject, how does Arueshalae's role progress over the course of this part of the AP? Character development, increase in HD/tiers, or something else? Does she have any particularly defining moments?
Arueshalae is not assumed to follow the PCs to the Abyss--unless she has already completed her redemption, she fears backsliding in such an environment, for one. GM discretion may see her coming along, but by default, she offers the PCs her anarchic gift instead, giving them useful bonuses and allowing her to advise from afar.

I think while her ability being similar to phantasmal killer might be apt it isn't a good rational as the spell phantasmal killer itself was probably made the way it was out of a metagame realization that it would be too powerful as an instant death effect at 4th level if it didn't allow two different types of saves rather than there being an in setting plot based rational for it.
I still find her ability a little fudgy and it's not how I would have done it, but can except it in the "it's magic" excuse as magic can do almost anything especially for somebody powerful enough to bend the normal laws of a setting.
Nocticula, fallen empyreal lord (perhaps even the one who put Cicatrix into Vildeis' hand), attempting to escape her fate through ascension to godhood and by doing penances, yet each penance (death of a demon lord) is slowed by her need to maintain her cover. Interesting. Unless some or all of it is a deception by the succubus queen herself, naturally.
I wonder how old deities/empyreal lords/demon lords/whatever would have to be in order to know the truth about Nocticula (the mysterious Concordance, the Seventh Accord - perhaps it was a deliberate choice to fall in order to do something akin to Tabris, or a long-term fight from the other side that got out of control...).
I had a similar line of thinking about her when I was reading about the concordance they never speak off. I could see celestials doing something very stupid like sending one of their most powerful as a deep cover agent, and totally failing to comprehend how seductive evil could be and that being completely giving in to it. (And dragging her brother along if they are really related.)
On the other hand as far as secretes go so much stuff has alluded to it to the point it's not really secret I almost expect it has as much chance of being a red herring either by her or something done by the Paizo staff.
It would be interesting it's all a part of her plan as she manipulates people dumb enough to think she actually wants to or even can be redeemed. She could leak just enough info to give a vague idea that's the case but make it hard enough to obtain to still make it seem like she's wants to keep it a big secret, all as part of her evil plan. It's something I wouldn't put past somebody that's supposed to be one of the most manipulative and deceiving in the multiverse.
It also make me wonder how often a fiend can truly be risen. It hasn't been stated, but it seems like it's incredibly more likely that a good outsider falls (think of all the devils that used to be good as an example) than an evil one redeems itself. Considering how unheard of an outsider being an alignment other than what it's supposed to be is normally does that mean there is only a very small handful of beings like Arueshalae that exist at all, and even less so if they have to find their way to it on their own and don't have special circumstances that help like she had?

Fall-From-Grace from the old Planescape Torment game is the first and as far as I know the only demon to ever change her stripes. Back in 1st/2nd edition anyway. Her origin was an extremely good reason to have her do so. With Arue you actually have divine intervention.
I don't see Nocticula being a former empyreal as a problem, but I'd be a tad skeptical as to her actually seeking redemption. Goddess of outcasts, artists, and the glories of midnight? Seriously? She wants to be the Goth's new goddess does she? Sounds fishy to me, or worse, like some kind of Twilight thing. When you add to all this the fact she has a known brother who makes regular visits to his "loving" sister things become even more unclear. Is he in on the redemption gig too? Who else, the maid, the gardener, Shamira?
All of this is of course my opinion, but, did anyone else notice the only thing said about this from the esteemed Mr. Jacobs wasn't exactly a confession praising our powers of observation? Never underestimate the DM's ability to point you in the wrong direction with a few words that neither confirm nor deny your own speculations.
Either way, it'd be nice if this was part of a "continuing the adventure" shtick for the end of the series. Yep, probably still time to toss that in there if you haven't already. Just sayin.....

Also Not to burst anyones bubble but I'm fairly certain it states somewhere that she was the first succubuss to be formed in the abyss.
Well her entry in Lords of Chaos starts with "The first succubus is a beautiful but deadly creature". This could indeed mean she was the first succubus or just be a title like the "First Lady". She could also have been a fallen "angel" that became the first succubus.
I have not read her entry in this adventure path, but unless something very specific was mentioned, the mystery remains.

Okay, here's my slightly crazy conspiracy theory.
Nocticula is Desna. We know Desna hates Lamashtu for killing Desna's old friend Churchanus, and Desna has killed demons in the past for messing with her clerics. Of course, the last time she nearly started an all-out war with the Abyss for taking her revenge, so she can't really try that method again. But demons kill each other all the time. Calistria with her love of Trickery and revenge would almost certainly be happy to lend a hand to the effort.
So she created an alter ego through which she could enact her revenge, has anybody ever seen Nocticula and Desna in the same room together?
It also works if it's a child of Desna or some other kind of "plant" that she's assisting on the hush hush.

Same here with waiting on the download, still. Kind of a bad business design. I try to support Paizo, rather than buy elsewhere that actually would have been cheaper. In return I get dumped into a line with no end in sight because of things in my sidecart.
At least kick us a download.
Ya I agree that we should get billed and then allowed the free PDF right away.
Looks like I ain't getting any PDF before X-mas.But then again it's my fault for ordering 10 days before X-mas!! :-(
xobmaps |
Eh, I suspect my problem is the 3rd party stuff I added to the side cart holding them up. I was kinda surprised they already had it in stock, and maybe it wasn't actually in their warehouse yet, or they used it up for the people that ordered faster than me. I suspect there is a (small) cost to them to bill twice, so I can understand waiting, probably made harder on them by Christmas rush and vacations.
But I certainly wouldn't be opposed to being billed for just the AP before it ships so I could read the PDF on Christmas though. :-)
Or a status update of some sort for that matter...
edit: Yeah, 3rd party stuff is now "usually ships in 2-15 days", think it was just 2 when I ordered.

I am in the same boat as you guys, for my subscriptions have not shipped yet. But all my stuff should be paizo products and I did not add anything to it. Most of the time I get my subscriptions on the 1st or 2nd day of the shipping. I am hoping it ships today but not looking good. Good luck on your shipments. Hope we all get ours soon. Specially this Chapter of the ap as that is what is holding up my group from playing, and it sounds and looks awesome.
xobmaps |
Sorry about the sick part, but awesome about the game time.
I'm most of the way through book one of Runelords here with one group after 4 months (my first time running something I didn't make myself), and am getting this to pillage, er, use for reference, in a demon invasion homebrew I have been running for a couple years now for another group (with a big delay in the middle)that was using a poorly hacked together set of rules that mythic really does a better job on anyway.
The first group will probably get this, or maybe Iron Gods, when and if Runelords finishes. Reading it alone has been a blast.

Well, I guess if you were a subscriber, you get your PDF right away like I did. I just got the print version of Midnight Isles in mail today...along with my new camera, the Anna Nicole Smith Show DvDs and some stuff...all in time for Xmas... I am now happy like an omox in fetid sludge!

Could someone who already has it post the level and tier progression?
The PCs should begin the adventure at 12th level/5th tier.
L13
The PCs should be 13th level by the time they finish Part 1.
T6
The PCs should be 6th tier once they become notorious in Alushinyrra.
L15
The PCs should be 15th level at the adventure’s end.
T7
The PCs should be 7th tier at the adventure’s end.

Yeah, I am in the same boat as him, and it seems like there are at least half a dozen others (mostly subscribers) lost at sea in it as well. At least some of us suspect other things added to the order late held us up, but I can't speak for everyone.

The thing is, I've subbed since back in Shattered Star. Never had a problem until Wrath. Every book so far has been delayed with this AP though. Meanwhile some people seem to get it on time regardless of having a sidecart full or empty. Its like they have two lists, those we take care of, and those we....well.....the other people.
Seems like they have an expanding infrastructure and those two goblins they keep chained up in the warehouse just aren't keeping up anymore. Time to expand guys. Or at least buy those two a sammich or sumthin.

That is odd as since my subscription started with the Wrath of the Righteous and had no problem at all except for the push back in schedule in November which affected everybody. Otherwise my stuff came on time. I guess they snap to for new subscribers and get a little lax with the oldies?
Weslocke |
Sometimes I get my subscription quite quickly. Other months it seems I am at the bottom of the pile. It is no big deal really. I am content to wait as long as I must. I have been a subscriber since the beginning of Skull and Shackles and they have never failed to arrive. The reason I was so eager to get my hands on this one was it was written by James Jacobs & Greg Vaughan.

Ok so while putting in another order yesterday I just bought the pdf and have to say I love this one. James and Greg did a tremendous job. Now back to reading it.
Hey, cheater! ;-)
Can't really blame you if it was holding up your campaign though. Does Paizo do anything if you somehow get a PDF twice? Like store credit towards a future purchase, or is it just double paying?Liz Courts Webstore Gninja Minion |

Generally, the system prevents you from buying a PDF if it already exists in your account (or at least warns you). Not sure how it works with subscription-granted PDFs...

Thanks for the fast reply! For what it is worth I would gladly pay for the PDF at a time like this if the money would just roll over as credit to my next subscription, but if it is not something already in the software, I can only imagine how much of a pain it would be for the software team to implement...

It's not something that's currently possible with the software as it is, and there are many things on the tech team's plate that are significantly awesomer for customers to have (trust me, I'm a ninja). :D

Off the top of my head, there are 2 mythic powers that'll help.
Depending on your mythic tier, the mythic ability Seal of the Star Tower will keep Nocty's seductive aura and domination from functioning for 1 round or more. Irrepressible Soul will also help versus the domination, not sure about the seductive aura without rereading the text.
