Chapter 4: "The Midnight Isles"
by Greg A. Vaughan and James Jacobs

After an audience with the Crusader Queen, the heroes journey to a fortress that straddles the boundary between this world and the demon-haunted realm of the Abyss. There, they must face powerful agents of the architects of the Worldwound and put a stop to the production of the powerful elixirs being used to grant demons mythic power. Beyond the fortress lies the Abyssal realm of the Midnight Isles, lair of the succubus queen Nocticula—and the source of the crystals used to create the mystical elixirs. Can the heroes navigate the intrigues of the Midnight Isles to strike a critical blow for the forces of good? And can they avoid losing their souls to darkness in the process?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path continues the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path and includes:

  • "The Midnight Isles,” a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 12th-level characters with 5 mythic tiers, by James Jacobs and Greg A. Vaughan.
  • A look into the vast horror of the Abyss and an exploration of its many corrupted realms, by Mike Shel.
  • An overview of Nocticula’s realm of the Midnight Isles in a gazetteer of her capital city, by James Jacobs.
  • A demonic siege in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Robin D. Laws.
  • Four new monsters, by Amanda Hamon and James Jacobs.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

A partly epic, and partly disapointing, fourth leg

2/5

Just to get this out of the way, let me start with the following obligatory advice:

Advice on adjusting the difficulty level of this AP:
Before running this AP, I was warned that the power of mythic PCs quickly outpaced the difficulty of the encounters the AP provides. Despite taking a number of precautions to mitigate this (having players use a 10 point-buy, applying advanced templates to every mythic creature, etc), I found this to be true.

In light of our experiences, and those reported on the boards, the consensus seems to be that there are two generally viable ways to deal with these problems:

Option 1: Power-down the PCs.

(a) Don't give the PCs mythic ranks.

(b) [Optional:] Use the Hero Point system introduced in the APG, and give the PCs a number of Hero Points per day equal to the number of mythic ranks they're supposed to have. (This makes players a bit more robust.)

(c) More or less play the AP as is. (Though there are a couple of encounters in book 6 that will probably need to be made a bit easier).

Option 2: Power-up the encounters.

(a) Give the PCs mythic ranks as the AP suggests (possibly with the nerfs suggested in Mythic Solutions).

(b) Use the (vastly) upgraded stat blocks presented in Sc8rpi8n_mjd's modified stat blocks document to upgrade encounters, and then further multiply the HPs given in the stat blocks by something like (creature's mythic rank+3)/3. (For more optimized players you may need to multiply HPs even more.)

Our experience, FWIW: We played books 1-4 more or less as is, and (despite my efforts to boost and combine encounters) found books 3 and 4 to be far too easy to be fun. We then adopted something like option 2 for books 5 and 6, and found that to be much more challenging and enjoyable. But we also found that combat can take forever -- don't be surprised if you find yourself needing to spend more than one session to get through a fight.

The story of this AP was decent and a lot of this AP felt appropriately epic -- with plane-hopping, trying to survive in a demonic city in the abyss, and a face-to-face encounter with a demon lord. The last half of the AP felt a little anti-climatic, though, sending the PCs through a lengthy dungeon crawl in a... [wait for it...] mine. Not very epic.

We found all of the encounters in this AP that the PCs are intended to fight their way through to be trivial for mythic PCs. (For example, I combined the 20 or so encounters in the mine into three big encounters, and the PCs never broke a sweat.) My players seemed bored by this leg of the AP (which is rare for them), and a couple of them independently suggested quitting the AP to try something else.

--Fun of the story of this leg of the AP: 4.5/5

Evil All Around Us

4/5

The Midnight Isles proves itself to be another interesting chapter in the Wrath of the Righteous campaign. Although I didn’t find this part to be as good as the three previous chapters in this campaign, it was still quite a lot of fun and well worth the play time.

The player characters will find themselves in a lot of ugly and dangerous places this time. Normally being surrounded by so many enemies would probably get them killed in a matter of minutes, but they’re all pretty high level at this point, so as long as they stay together they should survive.

There’s quite a bit of wandering around trying to find information about a mining operation for evil crystals. I personally didn’t find that part very engaging. It also seemed a bit awkward when good-aligned PCs have to do amusing things to entertain a succubus. Our paladin wasn’t pleased about that!

On the plus side, there are lots of scary battles to fight, and many powerful evil to destroy. Although they don’t do battle with her, PCs do get the opportunity to come face-to-face with the Succubus Queen Nocticula, which makes for a pretty fascinating encounter.

The artwork throughout the book is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Some of my favorites include the images of Mutasafen, Ursathella, Vellexia, and of course, the amazing depiction of Arueshalae on the cover.

Recommended!

Awesome!!!

5/5

Fell in love with this AP from the beginning and this adventure just kept it up, by far my favorite AP of them all so far

Into the abyss

4/5

In this fourth part of the campaign, the PCs finally leave the material plane behind and hop head first into the abyss - one of the most horrible realms in all of existence.

Of course, the PCs are not yet high enough in level to survive the more hostile locations in the abyss, but luckily for them, their mission sends them into the Nightmare Isles, realm of the Demon Lord of Juvenile Fantasies, Nocticula. In their quest to stop the production of a special kind of crystals that make demons into mythic versions of themselves, the new heroes of the crusade must brave infernal jungles, a beautiful city that hides it's terrible nature behind a fanciful yet dangerous facade, and even a meeting with the Demon Lord herself!

The mid part of the adventure is certainly the strongest. The possibilities for unique adventures in the capital city of the Midnight Isles are endless, and the players will be responsible for taking the initiative and getting things done by themselves. The later part and the early part, though, are standard dungeon crawls, albeit truly high powered ones - the PCs are quit the little menaces by this point.

All in all despite the unique setting the adventure feels rather bland, and no particular thing about it really stands up above the rest. I suspect that the fact that it was written by two different people had to do with it. It still looks like a ton of fun to play, and is perfectly serviceable as a part 4 of a campaign.

It is a bit annoying how unimportant the PCs mission turns out to be, though. They stop the production of the super crystals, and process to meet, like, 70 mythic demons in the next adventure. If there are so many, surely preventing the creation of the crystals barely matters.

Lacks that mythic feel

3/5

Read my full review on Of Dice and Pen.

The Midnight Isles is the first adventure in Wrath of the Righteous to lose that mythic quality and feel like just another adventure. It’s a decent adventure, sure, but it doesn’t stand out the way the other instalments in this adventure path have. In part, this is because planar adventures already have many of the qualities that make an adventure feel “mythic” and so, in order to make them stand out even more, they have to have something more than other planar adventures have—and I really don’t think this one does. In part, it’s also due to the fact that this adventure feels rather “done before”. It bears a lot of similarities to some earlier Paizo adventures, particularly parts of the Savage Tide adventure path. Of course, to a certain extent, all adventures reuse common patterns and tropes, but this one seems to do so to a greater extent. In his foreword, James Jacobs explains that the reason there are two authors on this adventure is because he and Greg A. Vaughan helped each other out due to both of them have very busy and tight schedules. It’s therefore not surprising, I suppose, that in order get it completed, they had to rely on reusing tried-and-true tropes. But alas, tried-and-true does not make for a mythic feel. The result is a planar adventure that seems rather ordinary when compared to the adventures that have led up to it.

No, this module is about negotiating...if you were to run right into a battle with Shamira or Nocticula at this point in the adventure, you would be eviscerated in moments.

Shamira grants the domains of Chaos, Charm, Evil, and Nobility, and the subdomains of Demon, Leadership, Love, and Lust.

How about her favored weapon?

On another subject, how does Arueshalae's role progress over the course of this part of the AP? Character development, increase in HD/tiers, or something else? Does she have any particularly defining moments?

Arueshalae is not assumed to follow the PCs to the Abyss--unless she has already completed her redemption, she fears backsliding in such an environment, for one. GM discretion may see her coming along, but by default, she offers the PCs her anarchic gift instead, giving them useful bonuses and allowing her to advise from afar.

Scarab Sages

Until she redeems, however, she can only offer her gift to one person.

I notice there hasn't been much talk about Queen Galfrey. Her stat-block is here, right?

Besides being a 15th level paladin, was there anything surprising about her?

I think while her ability being similar to phantasmal killer might be apt it isn't a good rational as the spell phantasmal killer itself was probably made the way it was out of a metagame realization that it would be too powerful as an instant death effect at 4th level if it didn't allow two different types of saves rather than there being an in setting plot based rational for it.

I still find her ability a little fudgy and it's not how I would have done it, but can except it in the "it's magic" excuse as magic can do almost anything especially for somebody powerful enough to bend the normal laws of a setting.

Alleran wrote:

Nocticula, fallen empyreal lord (perhaps even the one who put Cicatrix into Vildeis' hand), attempting to escape her fate through ascension to godhood and by doing penances, yet each penance (death of a demon lord) is slowed by her need to maintain her cover. Interesting. Unless some or all of it is a deception by the succubus queen herself, naturally.

I wonder how old deities/empyreal lords/demon lords/whatever would have to be in order to know the truth about Nocticula (the mysterious Concordance, the Seventh Accord - perhaps it was a deliberate choice to fall in order to do something akin to Tabris, or a long-term fight from the other side that got out of control...).

I had a similar line of thinking about her when I was reading about the concordance they never speak off. I could see celestials doing something very stupid like sending one of their most powerful as a deep cover agent, and totally failing to comprehend how seductive evil could be and that being completely giving in to it. (And dragging her brother along if they are really related.)

On the other hand as far as secretes go so much stuff has alluded to it to the point it's not really secret I almost expect it has as much chance of being a red herring either by her or something done by the Paizo staff.

It would be interesting it's all a part of her plan as she manipulates people dumb enough to think she actually wants to or even can be redeemed. She could leak just enough info to give a vague idea that's the case but make it hard enough to obtain to still make it seem like she's wants to keep it a big secret, all as part of her evil plan. It's something I wouldn't put past somebody that's supposed to be one of the most manipulative and deceiving in the multiverse.

It also make me wonder how often a fiend can truly be risen. It hasn't been stated, but it seems like it's incredibly more likely that a good outsider falls (think of all the devils that used to be good as an example) than an evil one redeems itself. Considering how unheard of an outsider being an alignment other than what it's supposed to be is normally does that mean there is only a very small handful of beings like Arueshalae that exist at all, and even less so if they have to find their way to it on their own and don't have special circumstances that help like she had?

Fall-From-Grace from the old Planescape Torment game is the first and as far as I know the only demon to ever change her stripes. Back in 1st/2nd edition anyway. Her origin was an extremely good reason to have her do so. With Arue you actually have divine intervention.

I don't see Nocticula being a former empyreal as a problem, but I'd be a tad skeptical as to her actually seeking redemption. Goddess of outcasts, artists, and the glories of midnight? Seriously? She wants to be the Goth's new goddess does she? Sounds fishy to me, or worse, like some kind of Twilight thing. When you add to all this the fact she has a known brother who makes regular visits to his "loving" sister things become even more unclear. Is he in on the redemption gig too? Who else, the maid, the gardener, Shamira?

All of this is of course my opinion, but, did anyone else notice the only thing said about this from the esteemed Mr. Jacobs wasn't exactly a confession praising our powers of observation? Never underestimate the DM's ability to point you in the wrong direction with a few words that neither confirm nor deny your own speculations.

Either way, it'd be nice if this was part of a "continuing the adventure" shtick for the end of the series. Yep, probably still time to toss that in there if you haven't already. Just sayin.....

Also Not to burst anyones bubble but I'm fairly certain it states somewhere that she was the first succubuss to be formed in the abyss.

Kevin Mack wrote:

Well her entry in Lords of Chaos starts with "The first succubus is a beautiful but deadly creature". This could indeed mean she was the first succubus or just be a title like the "First Lady". She could also have been a fallen "angel" that became the first succubus.

I have not read her entry in this adventure path, but unless something very specific was mentioned, the mystery remains.

Okay, here's my slightly crazy conspiracy theory.

Nocticula is Desna. We know Desna hates Lamashtu for killing Desna's old friend Churchanus, and Desna has killed demons in the past for messing with her clerics. Of course, the last time she nearly started an all-out war with the Abyss for taking her revenge, so she can't really try that method again. But demons kill each other all the time. Calistria with her love of Trickery and revenge would almost certainly be happy to lend a hand to the effort.

So she created an alter ego through which she could enact her revenge, has anybody ever seen Nocticula and Desna in the same room together?

It also works if it's a child of Desna or some other kind of "plant" that she's assisting on the hush hush.

Same here with waiting on the download, still. Kind of a bad business design. I try to support Paizo, rather than buy elsewhere that actually would have been cheaper. In return I get dumped into a line with no end in sight because of things in my sidecart.

At least kick us a download.

Ya I agree that we should get billed and then allowed the free PDF right away.

Looks like I ain't getting any PDF before X-mas.
But then again it's my fault for ordering 10 days before X-mas!! :-(

Eh, I suspect my problem is the 3rd party stuff I added to the side cart holding them up. I was kinda surprised they already had it in stock, and maybe it wasn't actually in their warehouse yet, or they used it up for the people that ordered faster than me. I suspect there is a (small) cost to them to bill twice, so I can understand waiting, probably made harder on them by Christmas rush and vacations.

But I certainly wouldn't be opposed to being billed for just the AP before it ships so I could read the PDF on Christmas though. :-)

Or a status update of some sort for that matter...

edit: Yeah, 3rd party stuff is now "usually ships in 2-15 days", think it was just 2 when I ordered.

I am in the same boat as you guys, for my subscriptions have not shipped yet. But all my stuff should be paizo products and I did not add anything to it. Most of the time I get my subscriptions on the 1st or 2nd day of the shipping. I am hoping it ships today but not looking good. Good luck on your shipments. Hope we all get ours soon. Specially this Chapter of the ap as that is what is holding up my group from playing, and it sounds and looks awesome.

Thanks xobmaps. We where behind but I got sick so I have not been working and they only work occasionally and so we have been able to play more. It has been a fun campaign so far, especially since we are further then we ever have been in any other AP.

Sorry about the sick part, but awesome about the game time.

I'm most of the way through book one of Runelords here with one group after 4 months (my first time running something I didn't make myself), and am getting this to pillage, er, use for reference, in a demon invasion homebrew I have been running for a couple years now for another group (with a big delay in the middle)that was using a poorly hacked together set of rules that mythic really does a better job on anyway.

The first group will probably get this, or maybe Iron Gods, when and if Runelords finishes. Reading it alone has been a blast.

Well, I guess if you were a subscriber, you get your PDF right away like I did. I just got the print version of Midnight Isles in mail today...along with my new camera, the Anna Nicole Smith Show DvDs and some stuff...all in time for Xmas... I am now happy like an omox in fetid sludge!

I am a subscriber, Abyssal Lord & I am still waiting too. :(

Just hoping that the PDF will be available on 26th... still no email about my items (yeah, was so stupid to add some Paizo stuff, too) being shipped. *sigh*

Ruyan.

*Consoling pat on the back* Welcome to the waiting club, now where did we put the drinks...

So did anyone else who added last minute get an email saying "It will ship in a week or two" around when they added, and hear about people starting to get them the next (working) day?

Could someone who already has it post the level and tier progression?

Yeah, I am in the same boat as him, and it seems like there are at least half a dozen others (mostly subscribers) lost at sea in it as well. At least some of us suspect other things added to the order late held us up, but I can't speak for everyone.

The thing is, I've subbed since back in Shattered Star. Never had a problem until Wrath. Every book so far has been delayed with this AP though. Meanwhile some people seem to get it on time regardless of having a sidecart full or empty. Its like they have two lists, those we take care of, and those we....well.....the other people.

Seems like they have an expanding infrastructure and those two goblins they keep chained up in the warehouse just aren't keeping up anymore. Time to expand guys. Or at least buy those two a sammich or sumthin.

That is odd as since my subscription started with the Wrath of the Righteous and had no problem at all except for the push back in schedule in November which affected everybody. Otherwise my stuff came on time. I guess they snap to for new subscribers and get a little lax with the oldies?

Without going into technical details (there are people far more qualified to do that than me), I can say that's not how Paizo's shipping process works. How long you've subscribed isn't a factor.

Sometimes I get my subscription quite quickly. Other months it seems I am at the bottom of the pile. It is no big deal really. I am content to wait as long as I must. I have been a subscriber since the beginning of Skull and Shackles and they have never failed to arrive. The reason I was so eager to get my hands on this one was it was written by James Jacobs & Greg Vaughan.

Ok, they are back in the office today, right?

Hey, cheater! ;-)

Can't really blame you if it was holding up your campaign though. Does Paizo do anything if you somehow get a PDF twice? Like store credit towards a future purchase, or is it just double paying?

Generally, the system prevents you from buying a PDF if it already exists in your account (or at least warns you). Not sure how it works with subscription-granted PDFs...

Thanks for the fast reply! For what it is worth I would gladly pay for the PDF at a time like this if the money would just roll over as credit to my next subscription, but if it is not something already in the software, I can only imagine how much of a pain it would be for the software team to implement...

It's not something that's currently possible with the software as it is, and there are many things on the tech team's plate that are significantly awesomer for customers to have (trust me, I'm a ninja). :D

Yeah, kinda assumed that if it wasn't a seldom-encountered feature already in there it wasn't happening in the foreseeable future. Thanks for checking though.

Off the top of my head, there are 2 mythic powers that'll help.

Depending on your mythic tier, the mythic ability Seal of the Star Tower will keep Nocty's seductive aura and domination from functioning for 1 round or more. Irrepressible Soul will also help versus the domination, not sure about the seductive aura without rereading the text.
