"Maybe the SIM room will be better? It can be set up to be like a library. And nobody will mind if you talk," Ori suggested. "Although I suppose the actual library has better access to reference materials if you needed to translate something or look something up."

Lang nods at her suggestion. I am not exactly the biggest fan of the Sim rooms, but if that is the best place, I am sure we can figure something out. can the rooms provide the same stuff s the library?

"Basic reference materials, yes. Anything really rare will likely take a trip into the farther reaches of the library, but this is the first time you've both sat down to look at the book, so to begin with it would be good to at least take the time to figure out what you do and don't know. Right now you don't even know what materials you might need," Ori said reasonably.

Gareth nodded and frowned, but didn't actually say anything.

Gareth shook his head. "I've been working on trying to figure out this book for a long time....I'd rather try to read the book first and play later," he said, with barely contained impatience.

Lang was a little disappointed, but seemed to understand. I have to let the others know first, ok? It would be rude to just leave them.

Lang then turns to the others playing, I'm sorry, I have some very important work. I made a promise to Gareth and Sifu Reading. I will come find you guys later, ok?

Phaedra landed and changed back from bird to humanoid. She smoothed her skirts primly. "Well, of course you have to go if you made an appointment," she said, trying to hide her disappointment. "You have to keep your promises. That's important."

Lang was having a great time playing the game with his new friends. Even more, he hopes that he can get Phaedra to trust non-firebirds.

As he circles around he suddenly notices Ori waving.

I'll be right back. he says to the others as he flies down to see Ori.

landing in front of her he bows, Sifu Reading, Is there something you need?

She smiled. "Yes. A bit of your time. If you'll recall, we have an appointment today for you and Gareth to try and decipher his book," she reminded him gently, nodding towards Gareth who was just behind her, the large book clutched to his chest.

Leaving the grove, Ori ran into Gareth, carrying his book. "Ah, you haven't been looking for me very long, have you? Shall we go and look for Lang then?" she asked cheerfully.

Ori had spent the morning planting, after making sure it was cleared with Adsila first, and specifically in the area that she had been told was okay. All of the seeds had been carefully spaced in a circle for the new grove. And now it would just take time for them to sprout. Several months under normal circumstances, since it was already late autumn. But she suspected that magical spirit trees worked on a different schedule than normal plants. She wiped the sweat off of her forehead, leaving unintentional dirt smears behind on her face.

Now that that was taken care of, time to go and collect her lesson plans and homework to grade from Tyrrin. She was looking forward to getting back to teaching.

Image

The trip back from the spirit world was a bit bumpier than expected. But they made it, and with Lang's help, they were able to get the seeds back through the barrier to the real world. For just a moment after they returned to their bodies, just as he opened his eyes, he saw large antlered, tree shape of Kyrtzllkyllyvkk in front of him. The nature spirit bowed slightly, and then as his eyes opened the rest of the way it was just Ori sitting in front of him. She grinned.

And now a powerful nature spirit owes Lang a favor. :)

Lang looks at the seeds, ya know what? If K gave them to you to do this, then they should be just fine. Your relationship with him has to begin with trust.

He looks Ori in the yes, lets give this a try, and I'll help as much as I can. kay?

She nodded. "Alright. Hopefully it won't be a huge complication. It means a lot to get them back to the real world. And besides, I bet Professor Agave will be practically beside herself with excitement over the idea of having an actual spirit grove here in her garden. Pretty sure it's kind of a big deal for people who love plants."

She looked around. "Now, uh, how do we get home? K doesn't know the way because he's been in a cage all this time, and this is my first trip....well, technically second I guess, but first conscious trip to the spirit world."

Lang smiles as he is needed once more. Follow me, we will return to our meditating bodies in the material world. If you ever get lost you will see a faint silver thread of spirit energy attached to you. that is your connection to your physical body. follow that, but be careful, if it ever becomes severed you can be trapped here forever.

Lang starts to guide Ori back to her physical form.

On the way back, Ori is quiet. She has a lot to think about. When they get close to where they came in to the spirit world she stops.

"How easy is it to carry something from the spirit world to the real world?" she asked.

Lang stopped, a bit suprised at the question.

after a moment of thought, I, ahhh, I don't know, I never tried. I believe that it's possible, but I don't know how or what would happen.

Lang is a little worried that Ori has something that could be a problem for her to get back.

Lang is starting to sound a little paniced as he tries to find a way past the twisting vines.

"Uh, yeah, I'm okay," he can hear Ori's muffled voice from the other side of the vines. "So, you know how when the spirit comes into our world we get earthquakes and big vines sprouting from nowhere? Umm....apparently that works just the same when I come here. When we're in the same place, things go boom. I think."

The creature wrapped it's large, branchlike hands around the bars of the cage and stared at him sadly, its antlers hitting the top of the cage forcing it to stoop as it stood. It didn't speak, only howled mournfully as it shook the bars.

"I'm sorry too," she said quietly. "I may have overreacted. A little."

Ori beamed at the both of them, pleased to see things moving in a positive direction.

And then groaned when Lang asked her about the stress relief exercises. "I tried. I really did. I just want to make that clear. I am taking this seriously. It's just...I'm not sure we're on the same page as to what constitutes stress relief."

"Alright, I admit that I don't know much about you kids, but is this whole awkward silence thing normal?" she asked, equal parts amused and concerned.

As lovely as it is spending a week in the library, Ori's research is not particularly helpful. There's plenty to learn about kami, but none of it mentions how to calm down an angry one, especially if you happen to be it.

She has also taken to spending a lot of time in the gardens. It certainly seems to help her sense of calm.

Image

After Tyrrin left, Ori looked over at Salis, smiling. "There's an entire section in the library on words of power. I've been looking forward to studying it actually. Perhaps we can study it together. But in the meantime, you are going to need to hurry as well or you'll be late to your first class."

She helped him gather his papers and kissed him passionately before effectively shooing him out the door.

"What about... reincarnating the spirits of his Grove into new bodies?" Tyrrin suggested, trying to be a little more empathic in her manner, but just ending up sounding a little awkward.

"That might work. I'm not sure. I'd have to talk to Kryshyykilli'vkk to know for sure. I am pretty certain that he knows how to rebuild his grove, but we don't have the easiest time communicating with each other. Just because we're connected doesn't mean we can easily talk."

"If their is a way to get me here I'm sure there is a way to the spirit world. I may be able to come up with a variant to a summoners call. They could summon spirits. It would takes some time and I would need the help of an experienced caster to cast the spell. Hopefully the words of power are the same here as they are in my multiverse. If not I will just have to do a little research." Salis rambled on loud enough for Ori and Tyrrin to hear and understand but not loud enough to think he was speaking directly to them.

"That is a very good idea. If you can find a way to talk to him, then we might be able to find out what needs to be done in order to free him from that cage. I think that once he's out of that, then it will be easier for he and I to communicate...maybe that will result in less rampaging. I hope."

It sounds like a subplane, similar to the Shadow Plane or the Ethereal Plane. I wonder if a similar spell to Ethereal Jaunt could be researched to access such a place. Interesting."

"If this being is indeed a Kami... it is likely the destruction of it's Ward which has angered it. Do you have any idea what that might entail?" Tyrrin asked academically, again looking at Ori as if she were a problem to be solved and not a person truly.

"Oh, I know exactly what angered him. The destruction of his Grove. He called them his children. The trees of the grove, I mean. He was imprisoned when it was destroyed. He got his revenge on the people that did it, through me. But he's still imprisoned, his grove is still gone, and whenever I lose my temper he takes over my body and destroys stuff. Not really sure how to fix it yet. Though I was going to speak to Professor Agave about the possibility of creating a new grove on the school grounds. I'm not actually sure how to do that either, but one problem at a time....and I must say, you're going to have to work on your bedside manner as it were. You're a bit off-putting when you get all wrapped up in the scholarly aspect of a problem like that. I still have feelings you know...for that matter so does Kryshyykilli'vkk."

"Nor have I. I do know much about the spirit world where I come from. Here I regent to say everything is different. Even how they act is alien to me. After a moment she becomes more serious, her acedemic side demanding the reins for a while. The smirk fades away. "So, I'm not quite sure what this 'Spirit World' is... some Plane or Demiplane? Does this mean that our hypothesis regarding it being a kami was correct?"

"Have you make significant progress with your... ahem... passenger?" Tyrrin asks, curious. She knew that she had left that to the side momentarily, but it had been a very busy week.

"Well, he's quieter right now. We're tied together, so when I'm happy he's less likely to rampage. But...there's still a lot to work on. He's literally trapped inside a cage in the spirit world and I don't know how to fix that. There was someone who was going to help me with that, but he's been busy. And...well, he's just a little kid. And the issues that have me...err...us...well, they're not little kid type of issues. So I'm not entirely sure how to solve the problem long term exactly. All I know at this point is that the bond can't actually be broken, so we're going to have to figure out some way to work together on things that don't involve flattening buildings."

"I could still give you assignments to grade, if you'd like. Would save me some time." Tyrrin replied, her amused smirk not yet fading, and there's the barest glance at Salis. "I see that you're not wholly without diversion, though." Tyrrin adds with a knowing look in her eyes.

"Not entirely, no," she agreed with a smile, taking Salis's hand. "But he has classes to teach himself and I have to spend whole hours left to my own devices," she added with fake drama, then laughed.

"Feel free to give me those papers, and other than first period I'm probably good to go back to work...I just have to get official approval first. I'll talk to the Headmaster about it today and hopefully by tomorrow at the latest I'll be back on the job," she said optimistically.

Tyrrin is forced to hide a smirk as the good Professor opens the door, noting both Salis' presence and the new stylings of Professor Reading's robes, not immediately sure which one of the Professor's rooms she had come to.

The smirk does creep a little onto her face, but it's not mocking, but she's a little amused, that's pretty obvious. "Good morning, Professors. How are you feeling today, Professor Reading?"

"Restless. I almost miss grading papers," she said with a wry smile. "Enforced idleness does not suit me."

There's comes a rapping at the chamber door.

Ori jumped up, opening the door quickly. She had clearly done something to her usually loose robes designed to hide every inch of skin possible. She had cut them and belted them so that they had instead become a figure flattering dress. Except that all the cut ends were ragged. She was a wizard not a seamstress.

"Good morning."

Ori had decided there was only one good way to take her mind off the troubles that had come with the weekend, and that was to make paper. She was up to her elbows in watery wood pulp as she shook the screen, trying to get an even consistency.

Salis shoots up from the bed he and Ori had been resting in. "Lockdown!? The wards are down!?" He slips out from the covers, revieling his powerful body. One would never expect to see as many rippling muscle upon his frame. Only one small scar marrs his skin, on his shoulder. After slipping his pants on he moves to kiss Ori. "I'll check the hall while you get ready. Unless I'm scouting I believe it would be best to stay together. So I shall wait for you just out in the hall." Quickly with amazing grace he dashes toward the exit, snatching up his satchel in the process.

Ori scrambled out of bed, tripping on the sheets before she managed to claw her way out of them. She threw on one of her oversized robes and hastily tied a scarf around her waist as a belt. She grabbed her own satchel full of paper and heads out of the room herself without bothering to stop for things like shoes or to tie up her still wet hair.

"Come on, we should get moving. If we run into...well, whatever it is...well, if it's that powerful...look, if I take off this amulet, just get any innocent bystanders out of the way and run. If there's someone attacking children, I'm pretty sure that falls under appropriate time to be calling on the nature spirit's powers."

Yep, that works. Looks like he'll be spending the night again...this time in the bed. ;P

He nodded and let Ori show him how to make a piece of paper. The process was much like what he knew of from his home, with a few variations. This however was the first time he had scene paper made or had made paper however. The process however wasn't hwy he wanted to be here. Many times he found himself intentionally messing up so that Ori would come close and show him again.

After he finally managed to get through a passable batch of paper, she called a halt to the papermaking.

She laughed as she looked at them both. "This was a bit messier than usual. We both look like we could use a shower..."

"...and yes, that is an invitation."

Salis walks around looking over the room. "It is a very productive facility. I can see you put much hard work in your craft." He told her as he picked up one of the tools she uses and notes the wear upon it.

"So how about you show me how these are used?" He asks while holding one of the tools. Though he seemed to be more interested in have her near him.

She smiled. "Well, I did promise to show you how to make paper...here, I'll show you, but you're going to make one sheet for yourself..."

Just assume that she gives relatively accurate instructions...I'm not googling the details on papermaking for this post.:P

She grinned. "Yeah, I definitely owe it for that."

"Come on, I'm done eating," she said, indicating her empty plates. "I'll show you my workshop. You can even try some papermaking for yourself."

He nodded in agreement. "Yes I think I would rather enjoy the experience." He told her as he stood from his seat.

She led the way back to her room, this time heading past the sitting area where they'd fallen asleep on her sofa the night before and past the bed to a door on the far wall which led to a large workshop. The walls were mostly windows which looked out onto the gardens. There was an enormous bin full of sawdust made from grinding up leaves and fallen branches and such, a large tank full of water and pulp, drying racks full of paper presses and more.

"So this is my workshop," she said, feeling a bit self-conscious as she showed him around.

He shakes his head no. "No the planetary wards I have no confusion over. I appeared in the gym of Avalon. It seems my arrival ended a furious snowball fight. It was lucky there were some students with the ability to understand me."

"Hmm...I wonder. It might have been during the troubles the wards were having last year.....Or it might have been the school itself. Teachers...and students for that matter....show up from the darnedest places. Places that have never heard of here....there were even advertisements for teaching positions placed in the world serpent inn...and nobody from the school put them up. It was the talk of the teachers lounge for about a day before something else came up to distract folks."

"It some what explains things, but I have never been one to trust in only one thing. Even when I adventured I trust multiple people to do one task rather than sending only one person. It seems reckless to expect the wards to protect the students all the time. My arrival actually is an example to this, at least from Ryo's explanation of the wards. The wards protect from extra-dimensional travel, which would include extra-universal." He talks of his arrival as though it is an ill-omen. "So I am a little couscous of the wards. They...

"That's the planetary wards. The rules for those changed shortly before you arrived. To allow for things like extra-dimensional travel. And space travel. Which is of course more possible now that the planet has been flipped inside out....still getting used to this whole ginormous sky we've acquired since then. Anyways, those are totally different wards than the school wards. You're comparing apples and kumquats."

"Hmm. When I met her she seemed to have more trust than most would with the student bodies ability to stay calm on there own. I have seen many cases of witch hunts started much the same manner as what happened at that party. At least it's good to know that it is more a situation of I'm new to her rather than her trusting fully in the student body to handle it's own affairs with no fault. I am sure that many of the students are very capable, but it is our job to give guidance and from time to time step in to calm situations."

"Oh! Is that what you meant? No, that's not trusting the students at all. Most of them she doesn't trust in the slightest. That's trusting the wards, which short of actual deific interference, and not just demigod either....this by the way is why the wards don't protect anyone against me when Kryshyykilli'vkk gets all rampagey...technically he's a god I think sort of although extremely limited and location specific and not a very powerful one....relatively speaking. At least that's what my research suggests so far. Anyways, back on topic, short of deific interference the wards would prevent the students from forming an effective lynch mob on campus. As soon as they started to attack with intent to do violence, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop...off to detention they go. Usually in a situation like that it's safe to concentrate your efforts on the students at the center of the situation without worrying too much about the others. And it's usually worth a few extra moments to make sure you round up everyone involved before moving the discussion to a less public location. It takes forever to round people up to answer questions if you don't and really, it's just not worth the trouble. And sometimes it's better to just go ahead and have it out in public. Nothing stops a witch hunt before it starts like a big public airing of actual facts. It's the getting people to hold off on the attacking long enough to get to the fact-sharing that can be difficult, and the wards take care of that."

"And no, it's not at all uncommon for new teachers to have trouble adjusting to this whole 'wards' thing. I still can't watch any of the martial classes in progress. No matter how many times I'm told that nothing teaches like pain and that any maimings are swiftly repaired in the infirmary, it still seems rather barbaric to me."

He quickly reached out to her to make sure she was fine. Once he knew she was he started to chuckle slightly. "No I haven't spoken with him. Or any current bartender for that matter. From the sounds of it it may be a good experiment." He teased. "I believe I have met Miss Jones. She seemed competent, but not much trust in he fellow co-workers. She seemed to have much trust in her students however. I have had to learn to trust those I travel with first before those we work with. If I didn't trust in the competency of them many of our adventures would have ended in tragedy." He sighed slightly. "I do hope she learns to trust my competency in the future. Though I guess I will have to prove my ability to her."

"Give it time. Miss Jones takes a long time to warm up to people...she hasn't really warmed up to me yet either, and I really didn't help with the jello shots incident. And I'm not entirely sure she trusts anyone's competency other than her own. But I'm sure she'll be less...er...disapproving over time. I think that's about as good as it gets with her. Heck, she doesn't even let her fellow teachers know her first name."

Salis smirked. "Oh I don't know I think there is plenty more I could learn and would love to learn. There's are plenty of experiments that could be explored. Like maybe the effects of of these jello shot things, I have heard about, upon a vigorous woman such as yourself. That can wait till later however, as I am sure we both need to regain our energy."

She choked on her water and ended up coughing and spluttering for a while before she could speak.

"Please tell me you haven't been speaking to the bartender at the Lucky Dog. I convinced Miss Jones to go out drinking with me a while back...and honestly I don't remember much past ordering jello shots, but apparently we're both banned for life. And Miss Jones says she's never going drinking with me again. But I have a terrible feeling there's more to the story than that....nothing truly awful. That's why I didn't go alone. I know I'm a lightweight when it comes to alcohol. But probably plenty embarrassing."

"I shall do that and I would love to see your work shop. I have yet to see the process even though I use so much. I belive it would be interesting to see." He stops and thinks for a second before continueing. "Huh. I haven't even opened a book today. Let alone gathered a bit of data." He ponders this for a moment. "This is most intriguing to me. You seem to have triggered much change in my mind. Normally my first thought about seeing a process done is to learn about it. This time it was more a reason to be with you." He looks on as though he was a scientist that had found something that may lead to a break through.

She laughed. "This is what happens when you're involved with someone instead of just observing. It's normal and healthy. And I work on paper making nearly every day, so it's not like you won't have plenty of opportunity to observe and record later if you want to....and I think you've done plenty of learning today," she added, blushing.
