Starfinder Society: The End Of Fame

Thursday, Thursday 4, 2021

Greetings, Starfinders! Earlier this year we announced that Fame would be going away, and this naturally prompted a number of questions. We’ve combed through the ensuing discussions and we’re here today to present answers! Many of these will be added to the Starfinder Society FAQ pages or other locations as appropriate, but I wanted to consolidate them all in one place as a reference.

Conversion of Fame to AcP

Let’s start with the big one. When we announced this transition, we promised we’d get a way to convert your unspent fame to Achievement Points.

We’re not doing that.

Instead, we are outright stealing adopting what I refer to as “The HMM Proposal.” Every Starfinder session played prior to May 31, 2021 will retroactively award 2 Achievement Points to both players and GMs. This is the simplest way to handle this, as well as the fairest. It prevents headaches, having to dig out old Chronicle Sheets, and look, it’s just a really clean system, why mess with a great idea?

Yes, it technically rewards the players who spent all their Fame, but those players are also our most invested players. Personally, I’m cool with them getting a little extra.

These points should be awarded no later than next Friday, the 12th. If you notice old SFS sessions that aren’t awarding Achievement Points after that, please email orgplayreportingerrors@paizo.com and I’ll take a look!

Other General Questions

Changing Quest Pack Reporting

One weird wrinkle we came across was because quest packs can be completed across multiple sessions, a player could end up with more Achievement Points than anticipated. As a result, I’m going to add some extra reporting options for Starfinder Quests.

If you complete all four parts of a quest pack in one session, reporting won’t change for that. However, if you only complete some of the quests, you will now be able to report each segment individually and it will award the correct amount of Achievement Points. Again, this will be in place by next Friday; there’s no need to retroactively correct old sessions, but if you see any issues, email orgplayreportingerrors@paizo.com!

Unapplied Fame

Any Fame that has been earned but not yet applied (e.g., from an Adventure or playing a pregen at a higher level) must be applied and spent by December 31. As Fame cannot be spent after that date, any unapplied and unspent Fame will be lost.

Boon-Specific Questions

In addition to general questions, there were a few questions that came up about specific boons that required Fame to function. Be aware there are some scenario spoilers in this section!

Inequity in Faction Boons

Currently, some Factions have more boons available for purchase in the online boon store than others; in particular, the Second Seeker factions are a little light. It is our intention to fill in the gaps in the matrix as the developers have time to create new boons.

Starfinder of Note

The Starfinder of Note boon has not yet been added to the Achievement Points system. At this time, we will not be adding the boon back, simply because we do not currently have any definite plans to use the submissions in future products. If and when we decide to bring back fan submissions (e.g., if we need a new First Seeker or similar), we’ll look at bringing back the boon. Any past submissions are still on file, and should the boon make a return, those submissions will also be considered.

Instructor Boon (Luwazi Elsebo/Ehu Hadif)

The current text of the Instructor boon for Ehu Hadif in the Achievement Points system is as follows:

You dedicate some of your time off to training an up-and-coming Starfinder recruit. This boon represents time spent outside of adventuring that you’re taking to train a potential new Starfinder. At the end of every adventure you have this boon slotted, record the total amount of Reputation you earned with the Second Seekers (Ehu Hadif). You can expend your Downtime at the end of an adventure to increase the boxes marked off for this boon by 1. Once you have accrued 40 marked boxes with this boon, your student has come into their own and is ready to become a full-fledged Starfinder (a new character). Have your GM mark the Chronicle Sheet where you accomplished this, and keep a copy of this boon with your new character. When your new character reaches 5th level, instead of choosing four ability scores to increase, you can choose five. Otherwise you follow all other rules for leveling up. This bonus applies only at 5th level.

Special: You can apply this boon only to one new character, and only once the objectives have been completed.

The same text should be used for the Luwazi Elsebo iteration going forward.

Lone Agent

The Lone Agent boon was a convention reward that allowed you to convert Reputation earned into an immediate discount on a Fame boon purchase. After December 31, 2021, this boon will no longer function. We tried to keep the list of boons that outright would not work small, and in this case converting it would require a full rewrite. Our apologies to Lone Agent fans.

SFS 1-01: The Commencement

Change the text of the Faction’s Friend boon to the following:

By assisting various factions of the Starfinder Society, you have proven yourself as a dependable asset. By slotting this boon, if you would fail to earn Reputation at the end of an adventure by failing to fulfill a success condition, you can check one of the boxes on this boon. Doing so reminds your current championed faction of your past exploits, and you still earn 1 Reputation with that faction as if you had successfully fulfilled the condition. You can use this boon only if you would also gain at least 1 XP for completing the adventure.

SFS 1-14: Star Sugar Heartlove!

Change the Scoured Stars Memorial boon’s text to the following:

Thanks to your efforts on Songbird Station, the Starfinder Society earned immense publicity from the Strawberry Machine Cake concert. Organizations and people across the Pact Worlds now go out of their way to assist the Starfinder Society. You can check the box next to this boon to do one of the following:

  • Ignore the Achievement Point cost of having your body recovered.
  • Ignore the Achievement Point cost of purchasing the Starship Towing boon.

Checking this box does not require purchase of the relevant boon via the Achievement Points system.

SFS 1-38: The Many Minds of Historia

The Steadfast Protector boon will be added to the Chronicle Boons section of the online boon store. It will require completion of SFS 1-38, as well as Tier 3 Reputation (25+ Reputation) with the Exo-Guardians and will cost 8 Achievement Points. The version listed on this Chronicle Sheet will cease to be purchasable as of December 31, 2021, though its benefits may still be used by characters that have already spent the required Fame.

SFS 2-16: A Scoured Home

Change the last sentence of the Nuclear Tools boon to the following:

If you are not an izalguun, you may perform the same upgrade by spending an additional 10% of the cost of the upgrade (1,650 UPBs) to work with an izalguun Starfinder.

We hope this answers all the outstanding questions about the transition away from Fame for Starfinder Society! If you have any questions about these changes or any other topics we missed, please let us know in the comments.

Until next time - Explore! Report! Cooperate! And go spend your new Achievement Points!

That ratio seems about half what it should be. Looking at the fame vs APC cost of things, things generally cost a bit more than twice as much ACP as fame. People almost always get 2 fame per game, occasionally missing one. So shouldn't we be getting at least 3, probably 4 ACP per game?

Fame hasn't been awarded since PaizoCon earlier this year.

Fame converted to AcP at a 2:1 ratio when we changed the boons to cost AcP. The reason we elected to go with 2 AcP per game is to balance out the fact that most characters have probably spent some Fame.

I think this assumes many will have spent their fame earlier on things that they will not have to rebuy using the ACP system... therefore 2 is a fair average. (HMMM... ummm ... we do not have to Rebuy anything we already spent fame on do we?)

Nope! Any boons purchased with Fame will function in perpetuity.

How will the Year of Scoured Stars boon be handled now? It seems like a good candidate to be integrated into the new boon system, but for some reason it hasn't.

Thanks for the retroactive Fame.

The corruption boons (nanite Corruption) have a clause that allows you to spend 8 Fame to remove the corruption.
Will we get something for ACP that allows us to remove the corruption?

Several folks have mentioned the Year of Scoured Stars boon which requires spending Fame but has no AcP version at the moment.

There are by my count 16 other boons which exist in the current Guide but have no AcP equivalent. (All boons in the Guide note their cost in Fame & AcP or note they are not currently purchasable with AcP.)

Some of those seem likely destined for retirement. There are a few that it would be good to hear official word on, though:

* a way to remove Infamy with AcP (Basic Purchasing Plan and Untarnished Reputation allow this with Fame, but there is no AcP version)

* Team Spirit (discounts Raise Dead; the service is available in AcP but only at full price)

The full list:

Abundant Ammunition
Alien Access
Basic Purchasing: -1 Infamy
Basic Purchasing: +4 to skill check
Expert Blackmail
Fusion Guild Contact
Improved Drift Engine
Rising Star (Luwazi Capstone)
Ruthless Blackmail
Scoured Stars Veteran
Sellback Plan
Shameless Sponsorship
Sponsorship
Team Spirit
Uniter
Untarnished Reputation

Will this be a one-time pass? To go along with the above comment, there are a number of sessions that I have that never got reported. I've been trying to get this resolved by connecting with the relevant GMs roughly since lockdown started (yes, over 1.5 years), but there are still a lot of issues.

If some of those issues are fixed, will there be extra AcP for them if the fix occurs after the 12th?

I have just finished going through and adjusting sessions. All currently reported sessions, and any future catchup sessions, will earn AcP. If you have an older session reported, you'll need to email me at orgplayreportingerrors@paizo.com to get it adjusted, but the system will work correctly.

And if you have a chronicle for a session that's not reported, you can send it to the same email and I can easily report it for you.

To be extra certain (since I feel a lot of people will need help getting games reported properly).

Is AcP granted correctly only for newly reported sessions, or will it be granted for sessions that are edited to fix errors? Eg: player numbers got entered wrong.

That is, what is the Best Practice for getting people’s games fixed?

The original blog post used 28 May as the cut off between Fame and AcP.

PaizoCon Online 2021 was the weekend of the 28th through the 31st. Those sessions already earned AcP. Based on the wording above, the ones played at the Con (and elsewhere) on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (but not on Monday the 31st) would now also earn 2 more bonus AcP each.

So why now make it "prior" to May 31st? Or was it supposed to be "prior to May 28th," the original switch over date?

(Not that I mind a few extra AcP, just trying to avoid misunderstandings and miscalculations if it was just a publishing error.)

This is a bit of a bummer. The "living campaign" stuff with player interactivity, like Edu Hadif, Four for the First's election, Starfinders of Note, etc., was what got me really excited about Org Play, and a big part of why I went all-in on Starfinder & Starfinder Society (rather than, for instance, trying to pick up PFS2E and playing in both sandboxes.) It's really disappointing that it sounds like that's basically done, with no plans to change anytime soon.

To be fair I was never super happy with that boon and how it worked out with Ehu and the others, and that selection progress had some parts I personally disliked. There is a longer version of this, but essentially it felt like inviting fan fiction and that was not a positive aspect to me, as I enjoy other parts of this campaign.

Ummm... I'm not exactly sure what you mean with that?

Like none of the candidate characters felt particularly fanficcy to me. I could maybe see that if there was particularly silly characters included but yeah not really

It's also that that lot of scenario writers ARE long running Venture Officers, so aren't they fans doing writing as well?

I expect some amount of that because, in the end, the candidates were all PCs that someone put a lot of personal attention into. But they didn't really feel like four similarly qualified characters with traits the Society would want.

I do have a question (suspect the answer is no, but anyway). I have a couple characters who I won't be using before the end of the year with Fame left over after buying all the boons worth having. Can I spend the rest of services to hold for later (such as purchasing a casting of restoration for the character to use later when it is needed)?

I miss the idea that player characters can run for First Seeker in the society. I loved the concept of Four for the First, and although Ehu was not my first choice, I did appreciate what the character offered.

And yes, a ton of scenario writers come from the ranks of Organized Play. In many ways, everything I create is fan-fiction -- but fan-fiction that honors canon, and has been reviewed and tweaked by editors who are also fans of the setting and characters.

When discussing Four for the First, I think it's important to look back on that first First Seeker Election, in the context of its time. It happened, what, roughly 1.5 years into the Starfinder Society's existence? Very few people had the ability to get a character up to the required Fame and Reputation in time for that first cut. I'd have to go back and check, but I seem to vaguely recall Org Play people saying there was a pool of roughly 30 "Starfinders of Note" to draw from, and that they were almost exclusively peoples' -701s and -702s. If the four candidates from Four for the First felt like initial characters from the program's infancy, that's because they were peoples' first characters from the program's infancy :)

I'm not saying this to put down those characters, but rather contextualize them. The options, inspirations, and (for lack of a better term) feel of Starfinder were all much smaller, and narrower, back then. The ideas and zeitgeist were still forming. The concepts for what was possible in Starfinder were simpler. Back then, no one knew who Datch is, how a vanguard works, what a Vault Lord is, or even why Suzi has been voted "Most Snuggly Accountant" for two years running.

Compare that to what a new "all call for X Position" could look like now. How many "Starfinders of Note" must there be now? Surely hundreds, maybe even thousands. That Cantina Feel is such a great part of what makes Starfinder, and I'd love to see someone's -708 giant floating brain reality-warper, or a -721 space-cephalopod mad doctor, or who knows what other -7XX crazy concepts the delightful gaggle of Starfinder Society players have concocted! "Rockstar Lennon Walrus" was amazing to see in 2-07, and I want more of that in my Society :D (Okay, point taken, maybe not every oddball character has the chops to be First Seeker, but - nearly every character could rock the hell out of some position, I'm sure!)

(I realize that the larger pool of candidates, as well as the larger pool of options for those candidates, makes the thought of another player-sourced NPC search exponentially more difficult... SufferingFromSuccess.jpeg)
