Pathfinder First Edition Pocket Editions Preserve a Legacy of Play

Tuesday, May 4, 2021

Back in 2018, Paizo CEO Lisa Stevens made a statement that still guides us today:

“Our plans are to continue to keep our pocket editions in print for Pathfinder 1.0 even after 2nd edition launches as long as it remains profitable to do so. I expect that bar will be met for quite some time for the core books like the Core Rulebook, Bestiary 1 and GameMastery Guide. Probably also the Advanced Player's Guide. The other books, which normally have lower sell through, may reach the point where it is unprofitable to reprint them. But if they don't, I am happy to reprint them for years to come if there are people who want to buy them.

-Lisa

As we near PaizoCon Online 2021 to celebrate all things Pathfinder and Starfinder, let’s shine the light on the Pathfinder First Edition Rulebooks that are available today in softcover pocket edition (each 8.5 x 6.5 inches), starting with the 576-page Core Rulebook Pocket Edition.

Nice! I was worried about overusing my 1E book, but this eases my fears.

Pathfinder 1.0 is an amazing game and many 3rd party publishers are still making awesome content for it.

Love, love, love, the pocket editions. I wish they'd "pocket-ize" the Planar Handbook, Pathfinder Unchained, and Mythic Adventures as well.

Yeah, I do love the pocket editions.

Great to see some official love for a great game that loads of us still play!

Are the Starfinder books looking to go into pocket editions too?

Would be nice to at least get Pathfinder unchained as a pocket version.

They made the core rule book into a pocket edition.

Yeah, once I saw they were doing pocket versions of Starfinder and 2e, then I thought more then likely were are no going to get any of remaining 1e hardcover books.

Nice!

Looks like that's it though... I hope I can say 'for now.'

Well at least we are still getting pocket versions of hardcover books. Though some more pocket versions of APs and compilations of other softcover books would be nice.

Yay!

Is there any chance that new APs are also published with PF1 rules on top of PF2 rules?

Very happy these are being kept in print. Pretty cool move by Paizo. Need to pick up the Ultimate Equipment pocket edition soon, as they are so good for use at the table.

I'm very happy to see this - I've bought multiple copies of the pocket editions CRB to give away, and when my daughter went to college in fall, 2019, she went with pocket editions of the CRB, Bestiary 1, Gamemastery Guide, and Ultimate Equipment. When my son goes to college in just a little over a year, he'll want his own set. Good to know we'll still be able to get him his own copies and won't have to take them out of our home library.

I would love this (what I really wanted with PF2 was PF1.5, and later PF1.75, and eventually PF1.875), but I don't think it's going to happen.

Yeah, I do wish PF2 was PF1.5 as well.

We have not announced any plans to do so.

That's a pity

Well no worries, If I can convert Night Below into Pathfinder I'm sure I can convert the PF2 adventures.

Just need that GM's extra effort is all

So are we ever going to get pocket editions of the remaining 1e hardcover books?

Still hoping for those remaining 1e pocket editions.

Almost two months later and still no answer, it's safe to assume that would be a "no".

I think I remember someone replying to that question in another thread that they might happen when they sell out of the full-size book and need a reprint, so they would "reprint" it in the pocket format.

Then I will be waiting a while.

just buy out their stock and you should be golden.

Or just get the full sized version and take it to a printing shop and have them copy/reduce and bind it as smaller..

Then maybe it could actually be pocket sized...
You could then even leave out the useless pages to save precious space.

Obviously more expensive than buying one pocket book but better than waiting for years?

I have the hardcover versions, just wanted the pocket versions as well.

I noticed many of the 1e pocket versions are no longer available on amazon, anyone know why? Paizo no longer making them or issues on amazon?

The best way to know is to look at Paizo's product page here. If it's still available here, it's maybe Amazon's distributor that doesn't distribute them anymore and Amazon sold their last copies. If it's unavailable here, then it means Paizo really doesn't have any copies left even if the distributor asked them for some.

Looks like they are still available on the site.

Well the bestiaries are available on amazon again.

Seeing how Ultimate Equipment and Ultimate Magic pocket editions are now "Unavailable", I guess now's the time to decide if First Edition pocket editions will get a reprint.

Will they?

I was just recently able to grab the last ultimate equipment at a BAM. I'm still wanting to complete the set and get more people to play.

Well I know sales have gone up for Pathfinder 2e and 3rd party companies because of Hasbro/WotC stupidity. Hopefully sales have gone up for Pathfinder 1e as well.

Hopefully there will be reprints for the pocket versions...still a shame we didn't get all the 1e hardcover books as pocket versions.

Will the 1e ones have additional printings or when they are out, they are out?
