The Pathfinder Society Organized Play team recently introduced the Core Campaign, an additional way to participate in Pathfinder Society that makes it more approachable while also opening up hundreds of new ways to play for credit.

As with any new initiative, there are many features that we consider and address before the announcement, and there are often nuances and corner cases that the public points out after the grand unveiling. I am going to address one of the latter now, but if you have other questions about the Core Campaign and how it works, I recommend checking out the Core Campaign messageboard.

Languages play a major role in our adventures, and while the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook describes many of the basic languages that could appear in any campaign setting, it does not list any of the languages specific to Golarion. That means the Shoanti cannot speak Shoanti, PCs traveling to Tian Xia are unable to learn the continent's common tongue, and nobody exploring ruins in Varisia can learn to read Thassilonian. That's an omission on our end, and we're including a list of key languages in a future version of the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play, one of the legal resources for the Core Campaign. In the meantime, this blog serves as a legal stand-in resource. Also note that page 8 of the Guide notes that human characters also gain their ethnic language for free (this is also true in the Core Campaign); in order to be extra clear as to who gets what, I have included a parenthetical note next to some languages clarifying which human ethnicity (if any) gains that language for free.

The following 19 languages are legal choices in the Pathfinder Society Core Campaign:

There are still other languages out there like Minkaian, Senzar, Treant, and Tengu, but this list should provide PCs with a broad range of language choices that facilitate playing and enjoying all that the organized play campaigns have to offer.

Thank you so much for this! It was my one major issue with the Core Campaign.

....In the spirit of 'looking a gift horse in the mouth', would it be possible to add the various dialects and sub-languages of Tien such as Minkai? Or maybe a general statement that while those sub-languages must be learned separately (1 rank in Linguistics per language as usual), that they fall under the 'umbrella'of their parent language for purposes of Core?

That way the issue doesn't have to be re-visited when other unusual Golarion-specific languages pop up? Please?

Please consider (in both campaigns) allowing Half-Elves and Half-Orcs to start with a human ethnic language in lieu of their racial language.

It makes more sense that a half-orc raised by a kellid tribe would know Hallit than Orcish. A half-elf raised in Magnimar is more likely to have learned Varisian than Elven.

Note that I'm asking for a replacement, not an additional language.

Eh... that's okay. The book does say ADVANCED Player's Guide, not CORE Player's Guide, after all.

Just get a "Core Player's Guide" sticker and put it on the cover of the Strategy Guide when it comes out.

I have no skin in this game as I am content with current state, and our local group has expressed no interest in having two campaigns running with our limited player base.

But I see the rational of Core meaning the contents of the PRD, which is just the hard back "core" RPG line.

That being said this blog post is has that slippery slope feel, that from this point on the Campaign team have now double their work effort in sanctioning, reporting, FAQing, and interpreting for both Core and Non-Core PFS. I hope there is an initial need that tapers off and that the campaign team doesn't get distracted by the mechanical and lose sight of the story.

I always kind of felt like the Pathfinder Lodges should just have an offices supply cupboard, that allows a pathfinder to have sufficient access to journals/inks/quills/charcoal, with the caveat you can't sell them. I realize it is a metarule to avoid BS situations (like sawing a ladder in half to sell as two ten foot poles.)

There is apparently a narrow time frame on Thursday afternoons when I am unable to count properly. I may have had Common on the list at some point and then removed it. Yes, the languages that appear on pages 101–102 are still legal in the Core Campaign. Dwarves, elves, gnomes, half-elves, half-orcs, and halflings still gain access to their listed bonus languages as normal.

Apply any automatically acquired languages to human characters, but please do not retroactively switch languages learned with Linguistics and high Intelligence. For example, a 3rd-level Varisian human wizard should automatically acquire Varisian as a language, but she could not drop one of her starting languages (e.g. Orc or Abyssal) to learn Skald. My belief is that this campaign mode is young enough that this should cause minimal trouble for anyone involved.

For now we're just going to leave it at these languages added. I can see some value in providing the more niche languages, but my understanding (based off my knowledge of published scenarios) is that there are no or virtually no situations in which one of the Tien languages appears where speaking Tien would not suffice.

It may be worth revisiting the exact language list while updating and releasing the new version of the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play, but that's a few months down the road. Let us work with this list for now and see if any glaring holes appear. In the spirit of the Core Campaign, I would like to keep the number of additional language options to a minimum, and this covers everything that appears in the Inner Sea World Guide.

Agh! Two more pounds! Characters are already near the encumbrance limit....

(I really would love to see a FAQ issued that your a worn outfit of clothing up to 8lbs (the weight of an Explorer's Outfit) didn't count against encumbrance.)

Well... I know that the write up on Tieflings say they speak either Abysal or Infernal from birth - it's not really a "learned" language... but the write-ups have been "modified" before...

Oh, I never realized this was, by canon, an innate ability for planetouched. It was more for my Ifrit of Vudrani heritage =D.
