New Options

Monday, July 14, 2014

The Year of the Sky Key, Season 6 of the Pathfinder Society Organized Play campaign, is approaching, and that means the new Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play is on its way. It's still a few weeks before we preview the new guide, but we can share a few new options available at the start of Season 6. In fact, there's something for players and something for GMs and organizers.

I imagine you've already spotted the art and guessed that expanded race access is one announcement—spot on. Just as non-standard race access is a hot topic on the messageboards, it's a common talking point during our meetings. It's tough to balance the lure of race boons for conventions against letting as many people as possible play the types of characters they want. Add to that the heated discussions about whether or not some non-standard races are overpowered and the concerns about the so-called "cantina effect." That's a lot to juggle when making a decision, but we decided that introducing a few new options would be best for the campaign. Beginning August 14th 2014 at Gen Con, three new races will be available for play without requiring a special Chronicle sheet: kitsune, nagaji, and wayang. These races have been in circulation through extra Chronicle sheets for nearly three years now, and even though some players have had an opportunity to create these characters, we want newer players to have new options to enjoy. Like other race options, it is still necessary that a player have a book or watermarked pdf reference for the race, such as from Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Dragon Empires Gazetteer, Pathfinder Player Companion: Dragon Empires Primer, Pathfinder RPG: Advanced Race Guide, or Pathfinder RPG Bestiary: Bestiary 4.

So let's see... seven core races plus three Bestiary races plus three Dragon Empires races. That equals 13, right? Well, there's one piece missing from that equation. We're also removing two races.

For several years, aasimar and tieflings have enjoyed a prominent role in the Pathfinder Society, but as the organization concludes its work in Mendev—where numerous pit-born fight for recognition and heaven-blooded warriors wage holy war—it's time for them to step back. Beginning on August 14th, creating an aasimar or tiefling character will require a special Chronicle sheet, as was the case years ago. The exception is any aasimar or tielfing character with at least 1 XP; these characters are grandfathered into the campaign.

Does this mean you can create several new characters, play a scenario with each, and have several native outsiders waiting for when you need them? Well, we debated long and hard whether to require 4 XP per character, as at that point one is past the free rebuilding stage. However, we also recognized this as unnecessarily punitive to casual players who may only be able to play once or twice in the next month. To answer your question, yes, you can make 10 aasimars and play The Confirmation an equal number of times, but we're trusting you'll exercise some good taste and respect a decision made with the larger community in mind.

Now that we've covered the more controversial news, let's wrap things up with something outright awesome.

We (both Mike and John) both have experience as venture-officers and event coordinators, and we understand that sometimes it's tough to convince a new player to commit to a full 4-5 hour experience. Some events just are not conducive to running a full game, whether that's because it's a weeknight with lots of folks who need to get to bed early or because the location is only open for a few hours. What do you do when a scenario just isn't short enough?

For years the answer has been quests, one-hour mini-adventures intended to last an hour or less. They're great little adventures, but they're a little difficult to schedule for a few reasons. First, there's no easy way to tell a bigger story by connecting a few quests together. Second, the quests—though replayable—offer no gold, XP, or Prestige Points, giving them a reputation of risk for little reward. The most difficult hurdle is that there are only two of them in print (not counting the Goblin Attack demos or Beginner's Box Bash demos).

This year at Gen Con, we're debuting six new 1st-level Pathfinder Quests that take place in and around the River Kingdoms. Each one is a standalone adventure, but they are all loosely tied into a common plot thread, allowing a GM to combine anywhere from two to all six to make a larger adventure as suits the needs of the group and event location. Play them in any order—one can even play the finale quest early—and earn a Chronicle sheet with rewards that scale based on the number of adventures you played.

Great stuff, Mike and John! Not surprised or upset to see aasmimar and tieflings go back in the can. The new races are a bit of a surprise, though, given that the Tien Xia theme has largely disappeared from PFS since Season 3. Can we get some suggestions for in-game canon on why suddenly the Tien Pathfinders have all emigrated to Absalom? Is Amari Li still well, or has disaster befallen the Lantern Lodge?

How about the fact that most Pathfinders go through three years of training before they are 'Confirmed' - so all of the 'exchange (students) agents' that came across from the East have only just finished their training...?

Those mounted tradition boons just became more useable too, since you don't need a boon for wayang, nagaji or kitsune now.

Note that this was in response to a question like "what races will be available next year, please say android!" His answer was "no convention or GM androids but an android would probably draw a good donation at the charity auction like the catfolk did last year." No confirmation yet.

So, interesting little story:

I was given a tiefling boon a couple of years ago, and decided to use it with a cleric idea I was already working on. As luck would have it, I hadn't actually finished making the character when I saw the news that tieflings were becoming open-access. At first I was a little bummed that the boon wasn't special anymore, but I'd gotten so deep into his backstory and personhood that I was still excited to play him. I tucked the boon behind his first chronicle sheet, and decided that doing so made him special.

He was fun to play; I enjoyed making a hero out of a tiefling, especially without doing the obvious angsty anti-hero. He was fun mechanically as well, versatile and hard to keep down.

As he reached mid levels, he was really taking on a life of his own. He had stories, he had accomplishments. He even had, amidst his versatility, a hidden specialty: since he knew first-hand the pain that demons can bring to the world, and since I knew that sometimes PFS used demons for high-level baddies, I built him (from 1st level!) towards being able to fight demons. He shreds their SR, fights with a cold iron sword, has solid Kn(planes), and even has bless weapon as a domain spell. Hadn't really come up yet, but he was poised to pull it all out when the time came.

Then, the time came: Season 5, the Year of the Demon. He has spent the past year fighting demons, gathering armies, winning allies, and saving lives. He is saving the world. And now, at 11th level, his time is ending. Having already played EotT, he's only a few XP from (effective) retirement. As such, I've planned for his final game to be at GenCon. As the threat of the Worldwound recedes, so too does his role in facing it. The end of the story of demons is also the end of his story; having helped save the world, he will fade into memory.

And then I see that on the very day the curtains close on the tiefling hero's two-year story, tieflings go back to being boon-only. I open up my binder, and...

I kinda know how you feel I recently retired a aasimar to the seeker ranks. I have another in the pipeline as well (GM credit baby) but I also have an old aasimar race boon from DragonCon 2011 that I once thought would never see use.

Aasimar - Broken. Just...all benefits and no drawbacks to being one.

I have two - an Aasimar Paladin and an Aasimar gunslinger. But yeah, no drawbacks to being those, and since most Society modules if not all don't account for the actual characters in the party -- I.E. - you have a Tiefling with an 8 Charisma so they could min-max themselves a nice martial class, and since this is a team game, they can simply sit out the required social tests that qualify them for a second Prestige. That's my only complaint -- there's NOTHING that prevents people from just making a sheet of numbers that increases with each successful playthrough.

As a GM, it's a bit aggravating to see leagues of players -- especially on these forums suggesting throwing away a stat to negative levels, and since there is no realistic penalty for it, you can guarantee a character will have at least one 19+ stat with NO actual loss in a place that matters.

If this announcement had involved - Hey, as GM, you can have more leeway to have accurate interactions with these lovely 8 CHA players, I.E. they go into a town without a bag on their head, and the townsfolk are ready with pitchforks and torches -- or it's just basically the same old/ same old.

Anyway, it's my one gripe. There is no solution that I can think of that would be feasible and fair across the board. Other than changing the rule that sets base stats...or have actual in-game effects for this kind of rules abuse.

Oddly, I have several Charisma 7 Fighters who have a Diplomacy skill that gives them what can be the second or third best Diplomacy in the party. And that are higher than the Diplomacy skill on at least one of my Sorcerers...

Dan, please don't let your hate for stat dumps affect your GMing, except, if you so desire, in a home game.

Myself, I usually argue, vehemently, against anyone who wants to dump Strength or Constitution, but I have run many games which feature either Shadows or various Con damage effects...

On the one hand, this means I have to somewhere play my 1st level aasimar summoner before GenCon, which may not happen. On the other hand, I don't need to keep trying to get a replacement boon for the kitsune I lost. So I am happy at that.

One idea for uses of the wayang/nagaji/kitsune boons is to allow you to make an aasimar or tiefling wihin say 3 - 6 months after Gencon 2014. That way if you have one your options remain exactly the same rather than changing with this announcement.

I had wondered the same thing upon learning that aasimar, tieflings, and tengu would be "always available," and that query led to the creation of the Xenophobia boon ("sacrifice" a race boon to Xenophobia to gain favored enemy against one of that creature's subtypes). I'm very open to creating another boon that provides additional uses for devalued race boons.

Suggestions?

What about something that boosts the powers of the races on the boon? I've been sitting on a Nagaji druid boon now for like a year as other character options have flitted through my mind and I would much rather some sort of boon that makes me say a, "Superior nagaji" than one that makes them easier to fight considering how little we see of these other races.

Maybe we can get a free racial feat for the race we choose (can anyone say kitsune 9 tail bonus feat?), extra racial traits, or even say getting boosted stats in the point buy.

Ohh at that point Naga Sin would become known as Naga Superior and I love it.

Shadow Lodge 2/5

Also I totally love all the decisions thus far. The idea of no minimum xp need to get grandfathered in makes total sense since even if someone wants to run the confrimation a dozen times to get some aasimar characters stored away it means they still have to commit at the bare minimum (assuming they have like the fastest team in the land) a dozen hours to the game and more likely something like 36-60 hours of game time to pull that off.

I'm glad to hear that there'll be a reduction in outsiders fielded at a table. I just remember playing in

Spoiler:
Tide of Twilight
and being the only character affected by a particularly nasty effect. Everyone else was immune either due to a class ability or because it only affected humanoids. There's a few other scenarios with charm person/other humanoid-only spells as well that experienced some turbulence with the whole Aasimar/Tiefling party.

It is up to the players to play the drawbacks of their characters.

There's very little incentive, mechanically, for doing this. It's the nature of what Pathfinder rewards as a game system. Having the GM enforce it is suboptimal especially in orgplay.

My two PFS halflings have strengths of 8 and 10. My two gnomes, on the other hand...

As for the announcements, color me shocked. In the race boon thread, I had just said the other day that I doubt they'll ever get rid of any current-legal options, just because they'd upset people who like those races. I also said (or at least thought - can't remember if I actually posted it) that if they do open any more races as always available, kitsune needs to top the list. It's just way too popular.

I'm a little disappointed that I just bought Blood of Fiends a week ago, just to make PFS characters (one specific idea in mind, but I figured I might do others in the future), and now I'll only have a chance to use it for the one PC. But I'll definitely get the one good character out of it, so that'll have to do for now. I'm not that upset.

This also settles the question of what to do with my kitsune PC. I made him with a race boon I got over a year ago, but I still have yet to play him. He has GM credits, but I just have so many characters and haven't played as much lately, so I didn't get around to using that character at all. I had actually been considering rebuilding the character into a different race, and giving the boon away locally. I guess that's no longer necessary.

I'll be curious to see if we get a lot of nagaji characters. I really love my nagaji battle oracle (just hit level 5 an hour ago!), and I've only seen one other nagaji in the area, despite tons of race boons floating around. This will give me a chance to possible do one of the other ideas I'd considered for him at the time I first got that boon. Given their bonuses to str and cha, they'd make great paladins.

2/5 ****

Here's my suggestion for "obsolete" race boons:

You can trade a race boon for a race that's just been opened up for a third character trait on character creation, but it must be done before March 1st 2015.

You may not apply multiple boons-for-traits to the same character, but if you happen to have one of the fairly rare "gain a third trait" boons you can stack them and an obsolete race boon on the same character.

Alternatively, if "pick a third trait" is too valuable, pick one skill and make it a class skill with a +1 Trait bonus on it.

So... I trade for a triple race boon, get one, and then the races open within a month. Just like my Tengu 2(?) years ago when I got to use it to start a character 1 week early. And now, to top it off, I have an entirely useless-to-me racial book. Yay.

I'm sorry, part of me is happy to see the aasimar and tiefling go out for racial balance issues, but this is something that needs to be announced more than 1 month in advance for those of us who have to schedule their games in advance as well.

I also find it amusing (in a very unamused sort of way) that when someone mentioned this possibility on another thread it was met with almost universal distaste. Now, about a week later, they announce this as the plan.

This would be a good thing. Perhaps doable with a downloadable boon: "Attach a boon opening access to a race currently available to everyone. That boon is no longer usable, instead you may create an Aasimar or Tiefling." Then, when these 3 doubtlessly move on for the elements, you just change the Aasimar/Tiefling bit to whichever ones were removed the last time. This will keep having racial boons from becoming obsolete.
