RPG Superstar Round 1 Voting Update

Friday, December 28, 2012

When we first discussed the idea of letting the fans vote on their favorite wondrous items, we didn't know what kind of participation we'd get. The response has significantly exceeded our expectations! These numbers, current as of the posting of this blog, show just how excited people are about this contest:

Total number of votes so far: 203,909
Number of votes cast in first hour: 3,762
Number of votes cast by top voter: 3,690
Number of people voting more than 100 times: 505

Your dedication has blown us away, so we'd like to return the favor by offering a little messageboard bling based on your participation. If you're one of the top participating RPG Superstar voters, you will earn a new title that will appear everywhere on the messageboards while voting is open, and display exclusively in the RPG Superstar forums once this year’s voting has ended. The tiers for RPG Superstar voting titles are:

100 votes: Star Voter
500 votes: Dedicated Voter
1,000 votes: Marathon Voter
5,000 votes: Champion Voter

Some fans have expressed concern that they're just sorting the bottom of the pile and not having any impact on the actual rankings of the items that have a chance of winning. At first it's fun to see items that aren't ready for superstar status, but after a while it's hard to keep voting when you see more bad items than good. We've got enough data now to begin culling the herd, so today we're going to drop the bottom 25 percent of items from the voting pool.

Thank you all for your help in this groundbreaking effort, and remember, the more data we get the better the results are, so vote early and vote often!

I think the removal of the bottom 25% was a good idea, but if you do this too many times it makes it easier for the marathon voter to vote repeatably for his and his friends' items. I think the items I'm seeing are vastly improved on average. I still think you can cut more items as voting goes on, but don't over do it.

Sovereign Court Dedicated Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7

Still working my way to Dedicated Voter, although I can't be that far now.

Since The Culling I am seeing more new items - huzzah!

Interesting observation (to me at least): Now that the true eye-bleeders have gone away, I'm seeing lots more well-executed 'meh' (which is the category I think my item is probably in, though I have yet to see it post-cull) or poorly-executed 'neat-idea'.

It is easy to see how the Superstar items pull away from the pack and I have seen more of them since this announcement.

Thanks again, Paizo, for keeping it interesting. :)

As a proud marathon voter, I can tell you that the people who vote a lot tend to see more bad items than good items.

Also, please don't hit the equally good/bad button, just vote for one or the other.

All right! Star Voter! :-)

I'm not going to see the same items over and over? Thank you!!!!

Star Voter Season 6

...now I have to vote more to try and spot my item and the item of my wife again.

Darn.

Dedicated Voter Season 6

This is an awesome touch!

I would love to know the total number of times submitted and still in the running. Based on the number of repeats I've seen, some more than a dozen times, the total is probably about 70.

I don't have actual data, but I can guarantee it is far more than that.

I would be surprised if it is less than 1,000 at this point.

I'm pretty sure they said that there were hundreds of entries from the beginning, not thousands.

Maybe they were just trying to make me feel better about my chances.

I saw my item after the culling, so I'm feeling pretty good. :)

Congrats to everyone who made it this far. I'm going to have to step up my voting efforts to match some of you ironmen.

Thank you for removing the bottom 25%

It didn't take long at all! I am happy to still be in the running.

Edit:
Also I've finally seen a few new items.

Liberty's Edge Dedicated Voter Season 6

I really want to find my item! It's driving me nuts, I'm still seeing the same 30 items over and over. :<

Dropping the bottom 25% was an awesome idea, though, thanks!

I am enjoying the process much more than I thought I would and am also enjoying reading many of these entries. While it was never in doubt, this simply confirms why the Ultimate Equipment Guide had so many cool wondrous items :)

There you go - plot synopsis.

"Father decides he needs to prove to his daughter that he isn't too old yet. Goes out seeking the greatest radical bards in the land to form a rock band to play against his daughter's troupe in the upcoming competition before the King".

There you go, both done at the same time :P

Ugh. Took me to over 500 unique items to see mine last time around. Though, looking at the curve I'm seeing, I think my initial estimate of the number of items was a bit high.

It was, but IMO it seems like a lot of the really creative or innovative more format challenged items were voted down solely on formatting in initial voting and culled with a lot of properly formatted SIAC & SAK advancing at least from what I have seen before and after the cull. Quite a few I'd hoped to see and have not after the cull.

On the flip side I have seen at least a dozen comments which are usually scrubbed (Hopefully Not Disqualified for getting excited in the contest) by people who have posted seeing their significant other, roommates or friend or friend's item.

Plenty were Dedicated and Marathon voters. Two plus is a significant factor particularly if a group lucks out and has a member get that repeating item.

I would be surprised if there is not a logic loop condition preventing someone from seeing their own item more than once every 500-1,000 Votes or set number of days.

IMO for everyone who posted (about another entry), there are 10 to 20 who refrained from posting but are aware of other entries.

Human nature being what it is how many do you believe down voted their significant other, roommates, friend or friends (gaming group) item when they saw them?

Based on the items I've seen so far, I think mine was in the percent cut. :/

Of course, I only just got Star Voter, so maybe I got really lucky and I just haven't seen it yet. Wish there was a list I could see...

Unless you think your item was weak or problematic, don't sweat it. I was Marathon Voter and a half before I finally saw my own item.

Shadow Lodge Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 8

Compared to some, I think it does look a little weak to me. But I won't worry about it. It's just that in past RPG Superstar's I could always tell if I made it when the 32 were announced. The suspense is (figuratively) killing me!

Surprise!

I saw my item three times before the cull and once since, and I only made "Dedicated" after the cull, so I don't think there is any logic to keep you from seeing your own. It's just how randomness works,

Just did it a few minutes ago.

I like playing Video Poker for 12 - 16 hours and voting was similar.

Had to make the push for the tag bling bling.

Paizo please do not make a Super Champion 10,000+ Vote Tag :).

You can look at your own profile to see. You're a dedicated voter.

This is going to interact interestingly with the voting system they've set up.

Making it through the first round is now heavily reliant on impressing the sort of people who will spend 80 hours in 7 days voting, which is probably a specific type of person.

Hope you Champion Voters liked my item!

I doubt there is more than one champion voter at this point, but I could be wrong. There are a lot of marathon voters, however.

I got to 'fess up that I've been hitting the "Both Items" button ...a lot. And right now I seem to be in a(insert collective noun here) of magical gloves, fingerless gloves, gauntlets ... and while I haven't hit any mittens yet its probably only a matter of time :(

Keep in mind that you're only hurting yourself by hitting the "Both Items" button. Avoid this button at all costs!

So is there anyway to know if you got culled? Other than seeing your own item of course.

No.
