RPG Superstar Round 1 Voting Update

Friday, December 28, 2012

When we first discussed the idea of letting the fans vote on their favorite wondrous items, we didn't know what kind of participation we'd get. The response has significantly exceeded our expectations! These numbers, current as of the posting of this blog, show just how excited people are about this contest:

Total number of votes so far: 203,909
Number of votes cast in first hour: 3,762
Number of votes cast by top voter: 3,690
Number of people voting more than 100 times: 505

Your dedication has blown us away, so we'd like to return the favor by offering a little messageboard bling based on your participation. If you're one of the top participating RPG Superstar voters, you will earn a new title that will appear everywhere on the messageboards while voting is open, and display exclusively in the RPG Superstar forums once this year’s voting has ended. The tiers for RPG Superstar voting titles are:

100 votes: Star Voter
500 votes: Dedicated Voter
1,000 votes: Marathon Voter
5,000 votes: Champion Voter

Some fans have expressed concern that they're just sorting the bottom of the pile and not having any impact on the actual rankings of the items that have a chance of winning. At first it's fun to see items that aren't ready for superstar status, but after a while it's hard to keep voting when you see more bad items than good. We've got enough data now to begin culling the herd, so today we're going to drop the bottom 25 percent of items from the voting pool.

Thank you all for your help in this groundbreaking effort, and remember, the more data we get the better the results are, so vote early and vote often!

That's not necessarily true. Lots of people wanted to know if they were DQ'd, so SKR posted this message.

Sean K Reynolds wrote:

I'll tell you what: If you REALLY want to know if your item was DQ'd, PM me with the name of your item. I can have Gary verify that it's your item associated with your account, we can look it up in the listing, and I'll PM you back about it.

Of course, by doing so you're breaking the anonymity of your submission, and we'll have to DQ you for it... :p

So if you wanted to know if you were Culled, I'd imagine the offer would extend to such a question as well. :)

Now that's just cruel.

Marathon Voter Season 6

Yay, Marathon finally... *flops* Now only 4,000 more votes to go.

Keep in mind that you're only hurting yourself by hitting the "Both Items" button. Avoid this button at all costs!

Even if that means you have to read a whole item entry!

Nope. Culled and DQd are not the same thing. :)

Yet if one was persistent in their questioning, I suspect the end result would be the same :)

I'd like to see another 15% (from the original total) removed this week and maybe another 10% (from the original total) next week assuming a sufficient number of votes have been cast. This would leave us with the top half to vote on for a few days.

A few minutes ago, I noticed that the database look-up for the voting booth got really, really slow for a few minutes. I wonder if a second culling just occurred.

Marathon Voter Season 6, Marathon Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

That happens to me periodically (during the first week of voting it would even time out some times), I always assume that it has to do with the number of people on and voting.

Any chance it's all in your head?

Oh, look. I'm a star. My name's up in lights... Well, not really in lights like on a marquee... Hmm... I thought I would be more proud of my achievement, but not so much.

Star Voter Season 6

Yeah, not for certain. Best you could do is make an educated guess by comparing your item to other items and ranking it yourself...

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32 , Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7 aka Monkster

How sad is it that not only am I posting here just to see my current voting ranking, but will now go back and vote s'more - just to see if my item made it past the 1st culling (yes, I know I'm gonna havta click a whole bunch just to MAYBE see it again), and to raise my ranking.

Oh ... and, of course, to assist the judges in their amazing efforts to determine the top 32 superstar items. Yeah, that, too...

God, what am I, twelve?!?

disclaimer:
Not that there is anything wrong with being twelve, should you be one of the younger posters out there. It was a very good year for me.

Tuesday looks like RPGSS's day at blog. I expect an update tomorrow though what it will be is still a guess. Since this thread is still strong a weak later, I gander number-crunching data is the sort of info we can look forward to :)

I'd be interested in how many times the no. 1 item has been voted for and voted against. Stuff like that would be pretty cool to find out.

Indeed. It would also be interesting to find out how many of the 32 most popular items actually make the top 32.

I, too, think these statistics would be really neat to go over. ...But I feel like Paizo won't be releasing that info. Too much potential butthurt, and they've set a precedent for keeping info regarding actual items (especially ones that don't make the cut) completely secret.

Do we learn which item is #1, or just the top 32?

Dedicated Voter Season 6

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Pretty sure we just get the judge-selected top 32, since the judges are under no obligation to actually select the top ranked 32 items. I mean, they might, but that's just what order they look at the items in while judging. So, I doubt Paizo will release the final rankings because... let's be honest... we'd all be pretty bitter if our item was voted to the top of the list and the judges vetoed it.

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

We never reveal the exact voter rankings in any round except for the final round, where we (by necessity) tell you who came in first. That will remain the case here—you'll just get a list of the Top 32 and a handful of alternates.

Well got to Dedicated Voter and I am pooped from reviewing items. Yeesh for how many more the judge went through all these years.

There are some truly tough match ups when viewing these items.

Some of them havebeen impressive, others quite good, and still others that I wish I'd though of.

Still haven't seen my item. Not sure if that is a good or a bad thing. I'm just hoping it wasn't in the bottom 25%. :)

It's neither a good nor bad thing. It's a meaningless thing. I was well into Marathon Voter territory (I'm guesstimating around 2000 votes, but I wasn't really counting) before I saw my item for the first time. You've barely scratched the surface at Star Voter status, so don't be surprised if you haven't seen it.

That's to be expected. It's a similar situation to the Birthday Problem. Basically, if you're randomly sampling from a population, the odds that you're going to get the same one twice go up pretty fast. So it's not unusual for you to come across something over and over, but if you're looking for a particular item, the chances are much, much lower.

I am seriously curious as to how these votes are counted I have voted for days on end in my chrome browser on my iPad for hours and hours. I have seen thousands of pages and voted far far far far far more than 1,000 times.

Star Voter???? I think some coding needs to be fixed. I am severely disappointed. Ther is no humanly way possible I've had less than thousands of votes. I had more than hundreds before they even announced the ranks.

What shall be done?

Star Voter Season 6

I am so irritated I have spent dozens of hours poring over these items reading thousands of them some I have seen so often I have them memorized!!

There is NO WAY I have less than thousands of votes. Some damn cookie issue or some chrome crap. I have never even closed the tab on my browser but occasionally the website would fail and I would have to click refresh.

Did this screw me?

I have read thousands of these items and voted with care and thoughtfulness. Such a disappointment to have broken code spoil the recognition.

No issues as far as I can tell. I would send a PM to Gary Teter if you think there's an issue.

With 60 seconds minimum between each vote, that means there are only 360 votes possible per hour. It takes 2 hours and approx 47 minutes to get 1000 votes of continuous voting with no lag between.

I seriously doubt your claims. I have voted from an iPhone, Android, iPad, Galaxy II, HP laptop, Toshiba netbook, and my crappy work computer. I am pretty sure none of my votes were lost.

Your maths are bad! You get 1 vote per minute (60 seconds). There are 60 minutes in an hour. So 60 votes maximum per hour. With load times I have been getting ~50 votes per hour.

BAH! Why did I do seconds to minutes!!!!

60*60 failure!

Which of course means 60 possible votes per hour which would be 16 hours and approximately 40 minutes to attain 1,000 votes.

They were lost I sat and voted while playing at computer for several hours a day never missing a vote - for hours and hours before the ranking was even announced! Then I ramped up m voting and did even more.

I have voted thousands of times. Shall I begin describing all the items? I've seen so many over and over I've come to consider them familiar as friends.

Something is rotten in the cookie code or caching with regards to chrome on iPad. It's all I've used except a short burst on my desktop the very first day.

I have never even closed the tab, ever! Something is wrong. I am sick of how much I've voted and its all been seemingly lost.

I have also used chrome, IE, and Firefox across an Android phone, windows 7 machine, and an iPod touch...between Thomas and I that's 2 people who have voted lots, with a multitude of devices and software.

It is more likely you voted under another account or something is an issue on your personal settings. Other voters would have noticed an issue as well.

Dedicated Voter Season 6

I've also voted using IE, Firefox, and Chrome across my laptop, my boyfriend's desktop, and my work computer...plus two different Android phones and the iPad my mom got for Christmas while I was setting it up for her. I've never had a problem. Admittedly, it FELT like my ticker was broken because I had to have voted at least 1000 times before I finally hit the 500 mark, but in retrospect that's probably about right.

The tech guys have been pretty good about responding to issues, so I'm sure if you contact one or wait for them to spy this thread, they'll issue a response.

Side note - Please don't begin describing items. If you do, your post will be flagged for deletion, and there could be other consequences. Not to mention the fact that number of unique items seen doesn't say much about how many times you've voted, so it won't really help your case anyway.

Jensketch: you made your point. Threatening to start exposing items is only going to ruin the fun for everyone else, and force Paizo to take malcontents into account in future years.

It's just a tag - you can have mine. As for the veracity of the claims to have voted thousands of times, maybe there is a software glitch. But no one here can help control that. I've voted a lot, and with kids and work and actually preparing for rounds 2-5 of the contest, I find it tough to believe anyone not ignoring the rest of their life could vote for "thousands of times". There are certainly people with committed time or jobs that allow them to vote a lot, but voting a thousand times is going to be a rare occurrence.

I say enjoy what you can from the contest. A lot of people are going to feel "screwed" by not getting into the top 32. Not getting a new tag on the boards is pretty small potatoes.

Let's all have fun with this contest and not look for things to complain about.
