GM Cody |

Hi guys, GM Cody, I’ve been around the boards for a while.
A bit about me: I’ve been playing in pbp for over a year now and really enjoy the format. Sometimes I post really fast, sometimes I’ll only post once a day. Depends on the mood and pace of the game at the time. I am in this for the long haul, I hope you guys are too. I’ll keep recruitment open till February 16th or when no new applicants are applying. I’m looking for 4 to 5 players
My expectations from you as a player:
o Consistent posting, I’d prefer at least once a day posting
o An easy to read character sheet
o This appears to be a role play heavy, horror adventure. I don't need roleplay examples or anything, I can go through profiles to find that, just something to keep in mind, I'm really want this to be a Roleplay kind of game not a Roll-play kind of game.
o Have fun, if you aren’t, say something. It's always an adjustment joining a new group, if somethings not working out, we can figure something out :).
Character building rules:
o Level 1
o We will be utilizing the Free Archetype
o For backgrounds, I’d prefer you use the ones from the Season of Ghosts player's guide but the regular common ones are fine too.
o Prefer folks use the remaster rules where applicable.
o Ancestries: the season of ghosts player's guide details ancestries to use.
o Give me a paragraph or two, 4-6 sentences minimum, of character background, who your character is and why they are here. If you want to go more in depth by all means do so. If you write it, I’ll read it.
o We will mostly be utilizing google drawing/slides/spreadsheets for tracking the adventure.
Let me know what other questions you have.

I'm interested. This sounds promising.
Long Zhi Xin (tentative name) has been fascinated by the occult and spirits since he was very young, growing up in Qianlei (predecessor to Songbai) and drawn to the nomadic huli jing who visited town. Once he was old enough to receive his parents' blessings to set out on his own in the world, he followed tales of spirits and haunts and eventually came upon the folklore rich Willowshore and settled down to study. The family-oriented residents of Willowshore were difficult for Long Zhi Xin to warm up to. He spends much of his time listening for stories, searching for books or old diaries, and studying, but he has found companionable conversation with Elizeth Candora and Kazuma Oono.
I envision an Investigator, and I'd like to play the class archetype, Palatine Detective. However, he can be a standard investigator. I'm also used to transforming my concepts into different classes depending on the needs of the party and preferences of the GM, so he could be any class, ultimately.
I'd like to play a samsaran or human.

I am going to apply with Taepung Snowtale, Kitsune Monk and traveling scholar/storyteller.
Traveling all around Tian Xia from a young age with her father/master, she learned so much about the various peoples and cultures of the region, though always second-hand through her father with very little in first-hand experience.
Stifled by her father's hands-off approach to learning, Taepung eventually parted ways with him. She was always more interested in folklore, stories, and superstition. The two had passed through Willowshore recently, so she determined that the haunted town would make the perfect place to begin her own research into the various tales of Tian Xia.
Despite her rigid upbringing as a disciplined monk, she prefers more unorthodox methods of both learning and teaching others. Reenactments, stage plays, anything other than simply sticking her nose in a book.
Background: Folklore Enthusiast

Hyuntaro |

Hyuntaro is a rather pale human from the outskirts of town. He's always been interested in nature, and with his disability (negative healing) he has sought alchemical means to heal himself and others.
Seeing that there isn't a really good way to integrate into society (having Dhampir ancestry *and* being from 'the wrong side of the tracks') Hyuntaro is anxious to see what he can do in the rest of the world.
TL;DR:
Chirurgeon (can bomb allies to heal them)
Outskirt Dweller

Hey GM, thanks for hosting. I've been interested in getting to play this AP for a while. I've been doing pbp on the forums for a while. One of the campaigns I'm in uses Google Slides so I'll know my way around.
My idea for a character is a Nagaji with the Close Ties background, whose name is Qing Xiao Mei. She's always stood out as an outcast in the town, due to her unusual body and her interests which led them down their chosen class. (I have two ideas for their class and can choose the one that is most appropriate for the party). As such, she's mostly kept to themselves and her close friend in town, only deciding to volunteer for the Reenactment Festival due to her close friend's cajoling.
Regardless of which class she is, Xiao Mei's been really big into Thilpit martial arts recently. Most calisthenics are designed for creatures with two legs, so the ability to exercise her tail through Thilpit is great for her. Might be something she picks up more seriously in the future...
P.S Exemplar/Animist seem really cool. If they are allowed, I wouldn't mind coming up with a backstory for that too.

Seth86 |

Ive been thinking of a few lines to describe her background etc
Shandari was born on a boat, not a grand boat of royalty, or even a trader's boat. She was born on a small fishing boat owned by her father. Just before her birth, a storm hit, out of nowhere. Winds howling, thunder and lightning filled the air, drowning out a lot of sounds, but no hers. At her first cry, the thunder and lightning stopped, the winds suddenly died down, as if holding their breaths, waiting for her. Somehow, they managed to make it back to shore, back to their village
She grew up there, listening to the story with awe and wonder, even as she grew older, the winds and the rain, even the lightning seemed to follow her. Be it a curse, or an actual blessing, she was never sure. But the very air and the destruction it had, flowed in her veins, that she was certain of

Thaumascourge |
Probably won't allow inventor, gunslinger or exemplar. Could be convinced to allow the Animist though as it thematically fits
This adventure path actually takes place 100 years in the past, so its 7108 IC versus current year of 7123 IC.
So 1908 versus 2023
Well, that's disappointing to see that Inventor won't be allowed. I do agree that Animist is very thematic. If I go with Animist, I'd probably switch out my background to Northridge Scholar. One, it balances out the party from having a Southside Traditionalist. Two, I think she'd be a big fan of opening a school that learns about and eventually teaches the town's old spiritual beliefs - especially Sangpotshi. Three, I'd prefer to not dump my Wis or Str.

GM Cody |

well I'll think about it a little bit more, my gut instinct was to not allow inventor/gunslinger but let me think on it.
Especially since it just got updated with the re release of guns and gears.
Still concerned with Exemplar though, just from a power creep stand point and thematically not fitting with the setting/area.

I will throw my hat in the ring with Feng Xi. Human (Skilled) Outskirt-Dweller Monk. He is monk that lives at the edge of the village but visits often. He is a quiet, but friendly guy that enjoys singing and cooking.
He is one of the Four Winds, four monks whose styles espouse differing philosophies...

![]() |

Here is a bit of Feng Xi's backstory in prose form.
Feng Xi stood at the base of Five Thunders Mountain, his home for the past 10 years, at his back. Though leaving in disgrace, the young monk’s head was held high, the memory of the previous night’s events running through his mind’s eye.
–
“What are you doing, Fu Long?” Feng Xi came into the tent to find his oldest friend, rival, and brother monk, the sacred scrolls in his hand.
Fu Long scowled, “The master is an old fool! Who is he to say that I am not worthy!”
“He is the Master! Who else has the right to judge anyone’s worthiness! We must be patient and prove that we deserve those scrolls!”
Fu Long, Feng’s elder by five seasons, scoffed, “The strong take what they deserve!”
“Fu Long, I cannot let you take them. I will stop you, if I must…”
–
The two young monks burst from the tent, Fu Long hurling flurry upon flurry of attack at the younger Feng Xi. Feng was better at defense than Fu Long was, but the elder boy’s skill was offense and they were fairly well matched. The fight was fierce and it awoke the entire population of the small hermitage!
First, Xiao Li and Pei Ling emerged from their tents, sister monks, the Southern and Northern Winds, respectively. Then the Master calmly strode up. He was so silent, that the two boys were startled when he suddenly interposed himself between the two of them!
The effect was immediate. Both boys reflexively dropped into a kneeling bow, heads pressed to the dirt. “What is the meaning of this?” The baritone voice of the master echoed, but his face was impassive.
Knowing that Fu Long would be expelled if the truth was known, Feng spoke up, “Apologies, Master! I grew impatient and intended to peek at the secrets of the sacred scrolls, but Fu Long stopped me…”
Fu Long was silent, but spared a glance at his brother monk. The master stared down at Feng Xi, his gaze piercing. The silence was deafening, but after a moment, it was broken, “Gather your things and leave. You are never to return.”
–
Feng Xi took a breath. He was always the model student. Had he fooled the master? Did the master know? Why had he been dismissed? Looking back over his shoulder one last time, he saw his sister monks waving to him from atop the cresting hill. With a final wave, Feng Xi smiled sadly and turned to find a new life elsewhere… A new adventure.

In this instance I just have a hard time seeing how an investigator from deep in the mountains of tian xia would be apart of a mainly osirion secret society. Would prefer you go with regular old investigator.
For others who have asked, I have decided I will allow the inventor, the gunslinger and animist but still no to the exemplar.

No problem. Can do. :)
I missed that this was using Free Archetype. Then it frees me up to make a more customized character. :)

My character is purchasing a lot of clay because it is cheap, plus he can use it to show townsfolk creatures or other things he's encountered, sort of like a 3d model. Clay has no bulk, but he is purchasing 10 units of it which is 40 ounces. One Light bulk per pound? One light bulk per 10 units? Or we doing strictly PFS rules on that, I'm carrying no bulk worth of clay even though I have 10 units of it.

Oh gosh I'm not sure, I guess as long as it isn't an obnoxious amount of clay its probably fine, it's not something I would notice unless you somehow pull out enough clay to build a set of stairs or something.

Ancient but cursed, Ghul divides his life into chapters thousands of seasons long each!
Those early chapters little more than a fading dream, his humanity in an age lost to time, vibrant of skin and wholesome of appetite, civilized, with passions and interests of mortal mirth, only to persist and decay slowly, everyone he had ever known dying, and even himself, his body, spoiling but never fully spending. For ghul is a dhampir gifted with eternal life but not eternal youth, and despite having lived a full life, lost himself for a time proportionally longer by an order of magnitude beyond even his own comprehension.
Those middle chapters - indeed the greatest span of his time under the hated sun by far! - also a blur, dimmed by a different perception altogether, for Ghul had devolved into a beast of the wood, slaking his sanguine lust upon game and fowl and rodent, and living as an animal, crawling on all fours like a dog, his body weak and yet powerful, his awareness of time only an ever-present "now", living by pure instinct, and losing his ability at speech, as years, decades, centuries without contact with other society-dwelling beings withered the very muscle of complex communication from his bloodthirsty tongue, all-the-while the flames of undeath keeping his undead heart paradoxically ice cold, and the entirety of his being reduced to a simple, primal emotion: hunger.
This late chapter, now, perhaps not even a few decades in length, of his being discovered once again by beings also blessed with longevity (but not cursed by depravity) - a group of elves stewarding the Silvermist Lodges (W5 is Player's Guide) - pitying his very soul, and trapping him for an extended period, nursing him back to some semblance of sentience, and with only the patience a race known for living well beyond the ken of other kin, reteaching him how to speak, to listen, to learn...
...in their absence, Ghul remains, and eventually integrates himself into the quaint community of Willowshore's south side, a huntsman sticking to the edges of the civilization, grateful for his own second chance at a simple life...
Ghul is an Outskirt Dweller Champion (Redeemer) of Ketephys who will have skillset similar to that a Ranger.
Currently borrowing my PFS version of him to apply - will finalize if chosen.
GMing this AP as we speak!

Here are my proposed builds for this adventure. They are subject to change based on party composition (big one being negative healing) and whatever the GM wants. I'd be ok with either of these getting in.
If I go with the Inventor class, she's spent her life trying to figure out ergonomic clothing and armour for creatures with a long, heavy snake tail. Her days were spent working away in her home to create her magnum opus - armour that fits and protects her completely. Her best friend in this scenario is the town smith and her boss, Huo Tian-Zhe. I'd think that Tian-Zhe respects Xiao Mei's determination and steadfastness towards her dream invention and encourages her onwards. Xiao Mei would be a big fan of Tian-Zhe and his knowledge of new Karahai technology and continues working for him so she can learn his secrets. Tian-Zhe probably nominated her for the festival so she can get outside the forge for once. She went along with it so she can get some field tests done on her prototype armour.
If I go for the Thaumaturge class, she's a shrine maiden working for the Nalinivatian faith. She learnt of the faith from the recently departed Nagaji wizard Anjal. Finding Nalinivati's patronage of her ancestry to be a good cause to rally behind, she has worked to evangelize the goddess's teachings to all Nagaji and magic users in Willowshore. Her religiosity might have put off some of the townsfolk, turning her into a bit of an outcast. She's a friend of Jubei as growing up, they were both taught by Anjal. She and Jubei have grown apart recently as Jubei delves into the Arcane while she focuses on Religion. She was amused but not surprised when Jubei nominated her in his place. She thinks that Jubei probably wanted her to take his place so he can go back to his studies.
If I go for the Animist class, instead of having Close Ties with someone, she's a Northridge Scholar. She'd be a big fan of opening a school that learns about and eventually teaches the town's old spiritual beliefs - especially Sangpotshi. She's a fan of the modern attitudes towards life and learning that Northridge teaches. She volunteered for the festival because she thought it would be a fun learning experience. She thinks the South side is the worst side but won't be actively antagonistic towards the South side. The only reason she ever visits the South Side is to visit You So-Jin, the elf herbalist. She mainly goes there to get fresh and dried herbs for her medical kit.
Regardless of which class she is, Xiao Mei's been really big into Thlipit martial arts recently. Most calisthenics are designed for creatures with two legs, so the ability to exercise her tail through Thlipit is great for her. Might be something she picks up more seriously in the future...

The players guide suggests that I speak with my DM concerning appropriate patrons for my witch. Do you have any suggestions, or should I bone up on my area lore and come up with something? Something about a "Stone Spider" is mentioned, so a spider might be a good familiar?
With the "Folklore Enthusiast" Background I've come up with a brief background.
Magni's parents aren't originally from Willowshore, but originally hailed from a deserted village between Willowshore and Sze. A great sickness took her mother at a young age, and her father relocated to Sze when the lumber mill closed. As he had no resources to care for a young child, he turned over her upbringing to his sister and her husband in Willowshire.
Magni was never a big talker, but these life changing events led her to speak even less. She could talk... just usually chose not to, so she became known as Silent Magni. Her adopted father/uncle was a reverent supporter of the Church of Pharasma, and spent much time working for the church, while her mother/aunt was a herbalist who supplied much for the village. Magni split her time between both parents, and though she revered Pharasma, organized religion wasn't her cup of tea, and she enjoyed gathering with her adopted mother, so she picked up some natural skills along the way.
On one trip her aunt fell and could no longer walk, so she sent Magni to get help. The girl got lost along the way and encountered: Insert Patron : Though quite traumatized by this event it also set her along the path of discovering more about the unseen world.
And now finally... finally she had been chosen for an abductee for the reenactment. She was escited... and almost talked to someone about it.
Magni will take the "Foundling - Mysterious" option for her background if approved.

Yeah absolutely I appreciate you asking. I would say that, in terms of thematic ties to the adventure, mostly in order of most thematic to middlingly thematic.
-Spinner of Threads
-Devourer of Decay
-Wildling Steward
-The Resentment
-The Mosquito Queen
-Silence in Snow
-Ripple in the Deep
But there are others witch's patrons than these, so feel free to choose one of the others that I didn't list too!

I kind of like the whole "Spinner of Threads" Thing. I hate spiders in real life so this should be fun. :-). What do you think about the "Harrower" Archtype for this adventure?

I'd have to look at the world guide/character guide and see what it says about Harrow. I'm not sure how prevalent tarot or harrow cards are in this part of Tian Xia.
I am maybe being a bit more restrictive to try and stay as on theme as possible for a secluded tian xia village with an adventure taking place 115 years ago.

Not a big deal if it's not. There are a lot of other good options. I had just envisioned that her real father visited her every year on her Birthday, and this year... on the day before the Reenactment he visited and gave her the gift of her mother's old Harrow deck as something to remember her by. She could still get the gift without the mechanical additions as a story part. Wasn't really wanting it for the mechanics anyway.

Things to note about the character and me: First, I do have a hard time keeping up with Glorian lore, so if the 100 years in the past comes into play a lot, I might be confused. If I take a certain weapon or certain item not yet invented let me know, though just because grand bizarre wasn't written until 2023 in real life, doesn't mean the items from that book existed very late in the Glorian lore. Second, I took the Willowshore Urchin background and got ideas from it. My background might not be exactly how the authors wanted me to take the background, but I wrote a unique backstory and did my best to make it fit. Third, I'm not sure if it matters where in Willowshore we lived our whole lives or where we live now. I would say he lived anywhere north of the river and hunted in the woods up north. It does say he lived in an orphanage, so I'm thinking any of the houses in the unnamed locations fit. Any of the houses between the two rivers up north would fit, just a random house among one of those can be an actual orphanage if you want it to be. Yes, he has lots of clay, he will take crafting when he gets his archetype, he don't have it now, but one way to describe to people what we saw it make 3d models of what we saw. I can make a crafting check for example to accurately portray for instance a owlbear or an apple tree, and when he is done, he shapes it back into the can.

After reading the Player's Guide more closely, I am withdrawing my warpriest of Irori idea and resubmitting a cloistered cleric of Pharasma (using the same name).

Born in Willowshire to a family well known for manufacturing rice paper used by the monks of the Tan Sugi monastery. Put out of business when the monastery was abandoned, his family became poor woodcutters for the lumber industry. Jiang himself was born in 7088. The birth was difficult and his mother, Qingjin, died in the forest during childbirth. Alone and helpless, Jiang would have died if Old Matsuki had not come swiftly to the sound of cries and rescued him. That, at least, is how the tale is told in Willowshire.
Jiang remembers the day. Against all logic and reason, Jiang remembers one thing about the day of his birth. He died. But he also remembers a beautiful lady in gray that cradled him and set him down alive in the forest just before other people arrived to scoop him up.
From boyhood, Jiang has been dedicated to Pharasma and though he worked as a poor woodcutter, he devoted any spare time to learning what he could of the great goddess. He was helped considerably by the arrival of Elizeth Candora, who trained him and consecrated him a priest of Pharasma. In fact, his consecration happened only yesterday, just before the start of the Reenactment Festival.

Background: Close Ties (Luo Xi Yang)
Notes: Mó-Zhǐ, usually known as Ink Fingers, or just Ink, is from the Shieh Clan remnant that elected to stay within the city walls of Willowshore, instead of the hardier hunters and swamp buffalo herders on the outskirts. He is currently working cheerfully for Luo Xi Yang, calling her "Young Auntie"-- which she truly isn't sure is a compliment or not--preparing her quills with a deft short knife, and spending careful hours making ink sticks from tung oil, egg whites, and such esoteric ingredients as fanged deer musk and pearl dust (Xi Yang reserves fancier ink sticks for certain clients).
He's a short, wily youth with a neatly coiffed hair bun, with an earnest smile in his slender face, a perpetual twinkle in his eye, and a polite word for any resident of Willowshore, and any visitor as well. As a matter of fact, he considers himself a bit of a tour guide for visitors...
He reserves his truly best behavior for brigands who swagger into town, looking to threaten shopkeepers or muscle their way into getting a drink. For them, he offers them a grand tour, and if for some reason their money bags seem lighter than they should have been by the end, they're too bewildered, happy, and intoxicated to notice. Why, one of them was discovered face down in a swamp outside of town after having barged into the Thrice-Blessed Inn demanding "original services", but Mother Otis can vouch for Ink that he was nowhere near that man who unfortunately had an accident in the woods--there must have been a ghost nearby! Nor was he anywhere near the bandit camp that lost five horses and an entire wagon when their campfire mysteriously exploded. Xi Yang herself chastised the bandits for whistling at night when they came back to complain. Everyone knows whistling is bad luck! And if their horses were spotted the next week being sold by Meng-Sung, it was certainly coincidence that he and Ink were laughing uproariously while feeding the Eternal Lantern quite a number of copper coins the following evening. That's just boys celebrating the traditional obeisances of our lovely town!
Ink will tell you this himself, over tea. Would you care to have tea? Ink knows just the place.
Basic concept: A Face Scoundrel who will take Bard Dedication, and is a bit of Robin Hood (stealing from bandits) and Alan-A-Dale (face, songs, etc) Lots of meaty roleplay opportunities.
