"They took them last week! We tracked Dizzy's bot, Digit, here and came as fast as we could!" Nemelith gestures to Jinx. "Cap and Di went into town to pick up our next cargo and never came back." She shrugs. "Don't know why the scumbags didn't come back to finish the job, but we're about to find out." Jinx cracks his knuckles and nods seriously. He gives Melissa a playful elbow and his datapad speaks again. "DON'T MIND HER. SHE MAGICS WHEN SHES NERVOUS." The hunk gives a deep laugh as Nemelith pretends to be offended. "WE FLEW IN. NEM HAD THE BRILLIANT IDEA TO DROP STRAIGHT IN FROM ABOVE THE ATMOSPHERE. NEARLY LOST A WING WHEN WE HIT THE WATER." Nemelith grunts. "Any landing you walk away from is a good one; weren't you the one who told me that?"

"No, to be honest, we were trying to figure out why people kept coming in and out of this room when mister wandered in here." Nemelith's eyes flicker towards the open doorway Melissa found. "Didn't see that though..." She looks over to Del. "Well, first we find our friends. Then we find your sinister mustachioed evil scientist, then we bleed 'em dry, then we GTFO."

You head down the stairs to find a small room with a locked door. Melissa and Strek get to work on opening it, as they usually do, but...

in unison Strek and Guess? yell "STOP!" They point out that the floor is made up of a shock grid trap! It seems a misstep when unlocking the door would set it off. Give me a Computers (to hack the panel) or Engineering (to disable the grid manually) check followed by an engineering check to open the door.

"That sounds quite good to me. Especially the part where we all leave intact, with everything we came for, and without being turned into very sad versions of ourselves." Akh follows into the hidden door and floats down the stairs until the sharp eyed members of the group stop him.

He doesn't have any experience dealing with complicated traps, so he just floats out of the way.

Strek is able to disconnect the shock grid manually by cutting just the right wire to remove power without alerting the greater system.

As you go to open the door, Del's ears twitch. She holds up a hand and puts her ear to the crack between the double doors to hear a soft whirring of fan blades. You wait a few seconds and the whirring gets quieter. Akh sneakily opens the door and peeks through to see a trio of flying observer-class security robots moving through the western door. You get a quick glance into the storage room the patrolling robots are moving into before the door glides shut behind them. It seems the observer robots are... less than observant.

You move into the room, a large chamber with two empty office desks and a table with a dispenser filled with cucumber water beside a stack of paper cups. The floor is messy, covered with shards of metal and duro-plastic.

DC 16 Perception or 21 Engineering check:

Those metal and plastic shards look familiar. You realize they are the destroyed remains of Dizzy’s drone, Digit, scattered about the chamber.

Nemelith hangs near the back, keeping an eye on the door that the robots went through. "Let's split up to cover more ground. Which direction do you want to go? Jinx and I will go the other way."

Akh whispers "Why would their patrol drones be patrolling the back-office areas? Oh... they're probably already onto us, aren't they." He peers at the cucumber water dispenser intently, for a moment suspecting it of being another surveillance mechanism in disguise, before he turns his attention to the two Wintermourn crewmembers. "Cover more ground? Seems to me the moment you split up from us you'll be picked off and your brains turned to non-resisting mush." He's a little suspicious that they're going to go off and inform on the group. Maybe even go directly towards those drones and turn them back around.

Looking over the shards, hoping to find something of use or value, Guess? realizes what he's looking at. "Heya Nem. These are the remains of Digit. You sure you still want to split up? Best you stay with us for now."

Guess? takes a quick search around the room...

Del quickly helps Melissa gather up the remains of Digit. Then she nods, moving to follow Guess? "Yeah, we'd better stick together."

Jinx silently joins Melissa and Del in picking up the pieces of Dizzy's metal companion. Nemelith shrugs. "If you want your back bare, that's fine by me. Let's go left then." Her tone is nonchalant, but you can hear the fear just underneath.

You head through the door, down a short corridor, and into a similar room. This one has been decorated to be a dojo of sorts. People must practice martial arts in this training facility.

Life Science or Mysticism, DC 16:

The walls of the dojo appear decorated with cosmological symbols related to entropy, maps that show the universe’s increasing slide towards a no-energy state, and diagrams of various common species — including those of your own — with physiological weak points clearly labeled and highlighted in bold colors.

You move on to the next room, a workshop. The tech lab is full of chemical beakers, vials, and assorted gear. Though no one is working at the moment, you can see the evidence of recent experiments.

Engineering or Physical Science, DC 16:

Looking at some of the technical notes, it seems the Adamant Scale uses this workshop to fabricate hellfire toxin. It appears they are working on the eventual delivery system, including an initial test that will target all of Tranquility with the lethal bioweapon. From their progress, it seems the group still has several months of work left before completing their plan.

"Those represent the inevitable winding down of the universe's order, the increase of entropy, and the general inevitable worsening of everything and everyone everywhere. Oh, and if you look, right next to those symbols, there's also little diagrams of how to maim and kill robotic dragons, goblins, sarcesians, ysoki, brakim and nuar. What a fun coincidence."

He eyes the lab for any devices that look like they'd plug into a brain, but doesn't have much expertise to tell any of the equipment apart.

Not finding much of value, you grab some of the laboratory notes for evidence against the Adamant Scale and head into the next room.

This gigantic room features an enormous array of holovid screens controlled from a long computer console with three chairs. Several doors lead from the room. Long windows along the southern wall give a view of prisoners held captive there. You see Captain Niva Rovu, captain of the Wintermourn, and Lindol, your moonrock buyer, strapped to exam tables with a large metal contraption attached to their skulls. Screens at the back of the room display videos you can't quite make out.

A vesk at the center of the room clad in a black cloak and metal face mask engrosses herself with watching the enormous screens, some of which display the inmates of Calm 93 as they go about their daily lives. One in particular displays the entrance to the community center. Other screens show construction sites throughout Tranquility, particularly ones that show huge tanks slowly being installed beneath the various islands. The vesk woman turns at the sound of the door and smiles. “I have gone to a great deal of trouble to find out what you know,” she says, slowly waving at the prison cells. “About me, about hellfire toxin, and about the Adamant Scale. I have interrogated everyone I can get my claws on. And now, here you are. I don’t need anyone else — now that I have you. So, here is my offer: stay here voluntarily. Surrender to me, and I will release all my prisoners.”

DC 21 Sense Motive check:

Although she will release most of her prisoners, she intends to murder anyone who knows about the Adamant Scale, which includes Agavana Stoneblood at the very least. In that way, she almost certainly won’t keep her word.

Akh squeezes through the open door and is shocked to find yet another cloaked female vesk in a mask. He puts two and two together (though maybe not the correct two and two) and calls out "I'm not sure why would needed to go through the trouble, since you already know everything..." Akh delivers a pregnant pause "-right, AGAVANA?"

"You might've fooled us once, but you won't trick us a second time with some bogus deal. And we won't let you lobotomize any more people, or manipulate the local government into creating petty laws about selling minerals that are just a little swirlier than usual!!!" He brandishes his taclash. "There's no way we're surrendering."

He then remembers Tarika and his confident smile fades.

In the lab, after hearing from Melissa about the hellfire toxin, Guess? videos and snaps pictures of EVERYTHING. Then grabs as much of the papers and notes and notebooks and data pads etc. as he can.

"This stuff is the smoking gun!! Grab all the evidence you can, guys!"

Guess? whispers to Akh, "Uhh... I don't think that's Agavana... I mean they're both female but Agavana was like albino... and undead."

And Guess? whispers to the rest of the group, "iyay istractday , ouyay allyay ootshay"

Guess? then turns to address the masked vesk, moving closer and trying to capture as much of her attention as possible, "Y'know, you went through A LOT of trouble for nothing. We really don't know much. And don't want to know much. We woulda been perfectly happy going about our business smuggling illegal arms for overly inflated prices. And trafficking endangered species to overindulgent, overprivileged socialites at ridiculous prices. And spreading malware to various planets, allowing us to hack into government bank reserves. Hell, you could've even have offered us exorbitant sums of money and we'd have walked away. Cuz y'know what? We don't care about what you're doing! All we care about is cold hard cash! Why? Cuz we're no heroes!

"But then you had to go and pick on people we knew. Honestly, most of them we don't really care about. But its bad for business when everyone we know starts disappearing. That continues happening and our client list dries up pretty quick. And what happens when we have no clients? Then we have no business! And no business means no profit. And what do we care about... Again, it's cold hard cash!

"So look, we've got an easy solution. You let the prisoners go. We sign a legally binding contract where you pay us the sum of... say... six hundred thousand credits, negotiable of course, (anyone ever notice that Guess? ALWAYS bargains for sums that are divisible by six?) and we never speak a word about... who are you again? See! I can't even remember anymore!

Guess? is trying to distract the vesk as much as possible to give the rest of the party a chance to get the drop on her when the guns go blazing. As a part of trying to distract the vesk away from the party, Guess? moves away from the group and closer to the vesk so that she loses focus on the rest of the party.

The vesk woman wrenches the metal face mask off, throwing it to the ground before picking up the enormous metal shield that was resting against the desk. "I am not Agavana! Though, in a way, I did make her." Her face twists into a wry smile. "I am Renevaya the Gentle, leader of the Adamant Scale." She gives a false and ironic curtsy before flexing her other hand, claws sharp, as she looks each of you in the eye. “Do you know how I acquired this name? The vesk warrior is successfully distracted by Guess?, eyes focusing on him. "Surely you are not just another group of traders. I've dealt with enough of those, who were unlucky enough to happen upon our little group. As for cash..." The vesk bares her teeth and points to the mask on the ground. "Top secret intelligence agencies need to be a bit more subtle about our funding. We can't just pay off every group of nobodies who asks nicely." Renevaya seems happy to be stalled. The vesk points to the southern windows. “Most of these people, they mean nothing to you. But how many innocent people need to get caught in your wake, targeted as a consequence of your actions, for you to feel guilt, shame, or compassion? A dozen? A hundred? Because I have plenty of room here, and I can keep going until we find where you have decided to draw whatever line lets you sleep at night.” She laughs. "Alright boys, I'm done playing with my food. Get 'em." You hear rustling above you and see vesk up in the rafters! You were trying to distract her, she was trying to distract you, I'm going to call it even.

Jaraduk's grenade flies in a beautiful arc up into the rafters but the adamant scale agents move with a preternatural grace to hide from some of the blast. Melissa' attempts to create a wound in the northern vesk's CHITTER but just ends up burning the front of the vesk's armor. Thankfully, this will still serve as a signal to the rest of the group. As Akh swings his whip in an enormous arc to hit the creatures in the ceiling, Renevaya scoffs. "You told Fireheart everything? But, but, but... How could you trust him? He's your enemy!" The veskarium leader is astounded that you could trust the Captain with these secrets.

The vesk guard makes eye contact with Del and visibly cowers. You can see his body slowing and tiring from Guess? and Del's magically enhanced words. Meanwhile, Renevaya appears to feel no remorse. "How could I have known you were just a simple band of delivery drivers, when every piece of evidence pointed towards you being a nefarious band of terrorist assassins?" The vesk casts just a single glance at Del. "I sleep in a meditative pose created to enhance rage. Why?"

Renevaya the Gentle takes a large step towards Akh and brandishes her claw and tactical shield. "As one who carries the spirit of a dragon, you should know... A VESK IS NEVER UNARMED!" Her claw carries a dark spirit of entropy with them as they head towards Akk's whip. Thankfully he is able to pull back the weapon before it is dealt a harsh blow.

Del's magical item summons an extraplanar being that follows Guess?'s shot into the secret agent's chest, further throwing him off target. The chaos is enough to distract the opposing vesk, sending his shot into the floor instead of Strek.

"Of course the Captain is your enemy. Every person I've interrogated has stated the same two things. Your hearts are good, but you flaunt the rule of law at every turn." She turns up her nose, a distraction; at the same time she faints with her shield and brings down an entropy-laced claw attack onto Akh's taclash.

Even as her strike causes the taclash to ping, the other two Adamant Scale officers strike at the imposing figure. Perhaps due to the distraction, both manage to hit with their attacks fueled by the division of the universe.

@Jaraduk, feel free to catch Akh in your grenade blasts if you need to in order to hit more targets - I've got evasion and good reflex.

Akh's a little too distracted by being attacked from all sides to banter. He mitigates one of the blows (reducing damage by 4) and then takes a guarded step back to the rest of the party. He aims his slightly cracked taclash at the most injured of the foes among those he can reach.

Ha! No worries. She's got a few more of those gems and they pack a stronger punch than she does in melee, even if it dies right away. Nice when she gets pinned down due to her size.

At the southern part of the room, Strek continues his duel with the vesk, exchanging blows. The vesk falls for the bait, running after the brakim and opening his defenses up to Akh's whip - which had just scraped off the edge of a vesk's thick armor plating. Green triggers AoO from Akh. "Hold still, worm!" The vesk loses his composure, black energy-coated claw ripping through Strek's chest plate to draw blood.

Meanwhile, a flurry of knives pop into existence to bounce off the Scale attacking Strek, several of which slicing holes in his armor. Renevaya steps after Akh, continuing to try to get an angle on his whip that swings around the room. While she is unsuccessful, one of her disciples takes a step forward and claws into Akh's exposed back armor.
