Guess? got post #2500. What a landmark.

Jaraduk smiles as the lamprey feeding tendril he smashed sinks into the bog.

Where's the last one? There? Behind you Akh? He cranes back and forth and finally circls around to find it and slam the flat of his doshko on it.

With the feeding tendrils "neutralized", Akh turns back to the creature's main body. He briefly ponders if - should the group survive this - the customer would somehow have some esoteric way to know just how battered its prized creature is getting right now, and withhold payment as a result. With how dangerous it is, the group doesn't exactly have much of a choice. He calls out "Get back if you can Strek, it seems to like you." then sends two nonlethal swings at the caypin's main body.

Melissa pokes her rifle above the water, but forgets to hop up to see as she fires. The sonic pulse ripples the water but misses the tentacle-monster. Guess? is distracted by the shot, and he is unable to psyche out the Caypin. Strek launches another frozen energy bolt into its chest and the animal shudders in pain. Akh's whip slashes at the beast, draining it's energy. It takes a lumbering step forward, its small mouth snapping out to rip into the android's chest with surprising force. It's face pulls back, blue fluid dripping from fangs.

@Strek: what happened was that I realized I've been doing entropic strike wrong - if the item level of the weapon you attune to it is lower than your level, you use the item level to determine your entropic strike damage. So 1d3 with the taclash, and 1d4 with regular non-attuned attacks.

Melissa's shot misses by a mile, while Guess?'s misses by an inch. But at the end of the day... more fetid water splashes up into the air. Akh's whip continues to crack in the air, one blow glancing off the thing's thick hide while the other slaps at a tendon. Strek, backed into a corner and running out of options, gets into a sprinter stance and begins to run around his companions with his defenses down...

Unfortunately, the Caypin lunges out again and its teeth cut deep into the back of Strek's neck. Blood sprays into the air, setting off Melissa's geiger counter, and Strek falls unconscious into the bog below with his ... nose poking an inch above the water. (Actually, I suppose you can't really drown when you're in armor...) ... armored form just inches below the murky water. Del fires another pair of stunning blasts, one of which hits the wild animal in the forehead. The creature takes another heavy step forward, enjoying the mouth-feel of Akh's insides. It's jaws clamp down hard on Akh's side, exerting an enormous force to break through his armor.

While Jaraduk continues to splash around in the corner, his epic duel with the feeding appendage continues. The tentacle wriggles up his leg in a spasm of muscle and dives into the nuar's chest. It burrows inside, feeding on his blood. Jaraduk crashes into the water with a huge splash, right next to Strek. The feeding appendage perks up, apparently only interesting in moving targets.

Your armor's HUDs flash with overlapping warning messages. TEAMMATE STREK IS - TEAMMATE JARADUK IS UNCONSCIOUS - UNCONSCIOUS. CALL LOCAL MEDICAL AUTHORITY IMMEDIATELY. You look from your bleeding teammates to the caypin, who seems injured but still vibrant and full of power.

Come to think of it... I never gave Melissa that extra bit of Identify Creature info. Well, how about a piece of timely and focused bit of info... Melissa eyes go to the feeding appendage poking out of Jaraduk's chest and notices something. The feeding appendages each have a single eye in addition to their toothy mouths. But the caypin itself has no eyes! Legend has it that the caypin sees through it's tentacles, though no one has been able to understand why. If you knock the last feeding appendage unconscious, the Caypin will be Blinded.

With his allies settling down to take naps, Akh turns for a moment to the people still standing. "It seems slightly more dangerous than we bargained for."

Not deciding an action just yet. I'm not sure if the remaining party members have enough strength among them to actually pull Strek and Jaraduk to safety. Seems like our best bet, even without Melissa's new insight, is to start by attacking the feeding sucker, since it has less HP but deals full damage at a full attack bonus.

Its the dilbert principle

Del plunges her healing serum into Strek's limp form, then draws a second as she takes a step closer to safety.

Healing Serum, Strek: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Was Del before Strek in the Initiative Order...: 1d100 ⇒ 82

Strek can take a Round 7 action.

Melissa and Del band together to get Jaraduk back on his feet. The nuar's grenade blast catches the hindquarters of the caypin, though the creature does not react much to it.

Reflex, DC 16: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 10 - 2 = 26

Guess? is a better assassin than kidnapper, as his rifle bolts keep glancing off the non-threatening portions of the creature's body. Del brings Strek back from the brink, and prepares to assist Akh. The caypin continues to howl, fumbling around him for any sign of an enemy. It's jaws snap once above Melissa's head, but then manage to tear into her paper-thin armor to weaken it's protections.

bite @ Melissa: 1d20 + 14 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 14 - 4 = 28
Total Concealment, 1-50 misses: 1d100 ⇒ 45
P Damage: 3d4 + 13 ⇒ (2, 4, 1) + 13 = 20

P Damage: 3d4 + 13 ⇒ (4, 3, 3) + 13 = 23

Round 8! Everyone is up! Note: Strek, Melissa, and Akh are currently in AoO range. Also, healing downed players in PbP is awkward since I do block initiative. If anybody raises Akh, flip a coin to see if you did it before or after he came up in the initiative order. If before, he can still act this round.

Sorry, y'all, quick post today.

Strek, still shaking in his boots from blood loss, gets in a shot at the monster. Nearly missing, the energy hits the top of the Caypin's temple. Guess?, pretending his safe rifle was a lethal one, hits the beast with another blow. It shakes in place, woozy, until Jaraduk's grenade explodes across it back and the giant creature collapses into the water with a thud and a soft sigh.

You look through the overgrown hydroponics bay and don't find anything of note. You take a quick walk through the dilapidated space station and come upon the escape pod. The pod's interior is destroyed, clawed apart. But the computer panel is still working and Strek is able to pull up footage of the minute before it was launched from the ship. The footage shows a group of crew members using shock prods to corner the caypin into the escape pods. They manage to seal the creature inside the pod, presumably for safe keeping during the rest of the journey. Just seconds later yellow warning text scrolls across the feed, HULL BREACH. LIFE SUPPORTS SYSTEMS FAILING. LAUNCHING POD. The pod is fired into the void, with the dangerous predator still inside.

Eager to not meet the same fate, you carry the caypin's body along with the mass of tentacles - which are quite slippery and difficult to hold - to your ship and deposit them inside the repaired cage you salvaged. The creature is injured from Guess?'s first shot, down 10 hp, but you figure you can fix him up. Does anyone want to heal the caypin before you deliver it? You fly from the old space station and prepare to jump into the drift. But during your startup procedures a characteristic flash of purple light temporarily blinds you through the helm's window. Another starship has dropped from the drift! Still minutes away from being able to drift jump, you wait in anticipation. A communication request comes through titled TRUCE!.

You open the video feed and another starship crew appears onscreen. The captain, a half-elf by the looks of it, speaks first. "Hello, we are members of the Wild Wardens. Our conservationist group believes Rok Dregnaugh’s private zoo is a cruel practice. I'm guessing you're here to pick up another of his finds." She pauses. "It seems our intel got the location a little too late. We're here to prevent the merchant from acquiring more creatures. But... we're pacifists by nature, we won't be fighting you today. But perhaps we can convince you to do the right thing." She looks offscreen, thinking. "I'm sure he's offered you a bundle of creds for the creature. We're not billionaires, so this probably doesn't compare to what Dregnaugh offered, but we can give you 3000 credits. Give us the caypin and we'll release it back to its native environment."

with that, the critter should have more than enough days in the drift with bed rest to heal up. If the drift god is kind and pops us up before then, or he paces the ship a lot. we could pop a healing serum or 4 in there as needed.
