I believe that Demed used Athletics initially to Survey for Fishing Spot, and the GM stated that A player using a net for the whole round can roll an Athletics check to Catch Fish!. You could do the net thing for all three rounds, though you'd take a -2 on the Round Two and a -4 on Round Three. But with your Athletics at +7, that's probably as good as you can do. In a pinch you could try using your Halberd to spear the fish (using Weapon Surge for effect) like Mandoo used his bow. The GM also said that creativity was encouraged, so if you can make a good case for say, Coercing, or better yet Demoralizing (with Intimidating Glare), a fish out of the water with Intimidation; or Make an Impression and then Requesting one of the other fishers to give you one of their fish with Diplomacy, that might work too.

ooc Masei escalating this argument implies that if Demed does not yield the pole, I will opt to attempt intimidation, likely fail, and then if that fails and I'm forced to escalate again, I will likely non-lethally punch Demed. I'm ready to 1v1 this arse over this egregious display if his obstinacy goes far enough. Alternatively, I can athletics to push him into the dock and bring his pole to Deka as my Round 4 check.

Quick clarification regarding Masei's actions: Masei was not paying enough attention to the other competitors to know the spare pole was Demed's, I simply saw an opportunity as a player that my character would go for in earnest and chose to go for it in-character. If there was an unattended pole somewhere else, she would have grabbed it as well in this instance, Masei simply does not pay mind to the concept of personal property as a result of having come from a culture where such concerns did not exist and tools were made to be used according to need. Thus, her statement was not a lie, but since I'm not any better at Deception than I am at other social skills, it hardly matters in this instance, and, since I'd already said I'd escalate if talked down to, we're going in.

Very well. As best as I can tell from looking over the latest Tourney Tracker, it appears that the rounds still missing PC skill rolls are as follows.

Round 1: Completed
Interlude 1: Completed (I presume)

@Mandoo: Grab is released at the end of the monster's next turn, so if it didn't resume the grab you should be free without needing to escape, that said hero points I don't think would have allowed for you to come out of that situation with more than 0HP and stabilized, so you might want to reconsider your post unless the GM is okay with leaving it as-is.

Ah, yes, good point on the crab needing to use an action to extend the Grab beyond the end of its turn. I'll redo Mandoo's turn.

But I disagree with you on: that said hero points I don't think would have allowed for you to come out of that situation with more than 0HP and stabilized.

Hero Points are not just useful to stabilize the dying, they can also be used to reroll a check. After that first crit-fail Fortitude check, I had a couple of choices. (1) Use a Hero Point to reroll Mandoo's Fortitude check, or (2) Use all Mandoo's Hero Points to stabilize him at the moment he would have gone to Dying 4.

I chose option (1) because it gave Mandoo the only chance of getting through the crab's constrictions while remaining conscious. With option (2), Mandoo would have been prone and unconscious at 0hp, effectively keeping him out of the fight. It also helps that I'm not that attached to Mandoo as a character and would not shed many tears if he doesn't survive the bounty.

Ah, fair enough. Admittedly I was thinking of Constrict as an Attack rather than a save when typing that, so I hadn't made the connection that Hero points can be effectively used to reroll your "AC" for the purposes of that physical attack variant.

That was a lot of fun, but a fair bit of work for only 1 XP. Thanks to all the players for being such good sports and to rainzax for his usual excellent GMing. Now I've got to go back to the drawing board to see if I can make further improvements to Mandoo before he hits 2nd level.

Not that you asked, but have you considered shifting that 14 in WIS to either INT or CHA? Might open up some space on your build. For example, as a human, you could grab the Weapon Proficiency feat and pick up the Marshal Archetype at level two.

You played Mandoo as pretty talkative this game, so might as well let the mechanics support that inclination.

Indeed I have.

I've spent literally hours on Pathbuilder working through all the possible ways of tweaking Mandoo to see how he turns out. Unfortunately, Monks are MAD as anything, mainly with STR and DEX. I tried dropping STR to give me some points to throw into something else, but putting them into CHA or INT just resulted in reducing his overall effectiveness way too much. I ended up with a weakened monk and a middling face. Turns out there's a reason that INT and CHA are considered dump stats for monks. I'm no minimaxer, but I want to have Mandoo hold his own in a group. The only viable low-STR versions of him I could build was by putting those points into WIS (to bump his Perception, Will and Survival) and/or CON (for HP and Fortitude) at the cost of melee damage output. Since I'd turned him into a DEX-based archer Monk, I figured I could afford to lose a little melee effectiveness. Now I'm not so sure.

In retrospect, I think my main problem with the original Mandoo was that his stoic taciturn loner personality sucked and RPing him was no fun. I'm trying him out as a more confident roguish character who thinks he's a good talker; a smooth operator with the ladies; and intimidating as hell, but is in fact none of those. Should make for more RP possibilities, especially when his rolls fail to support this view he has of himself. I certainly had a lot more fun playing him that way in this bounty.

Yeah I feel ya there, Stoic is a personality type you have to be actively thinking about in order to get a lot of enjoyment out of RP'ing. For Masei I'm trying to make it work by playing up her awkwardness in modern society with an intent to have her function as the serious fish-out-of-water (heh) straight man of a group for others to play off of. Best of luck rp'ing the overly-self confident type, its a fun character archetype from the times I've tried it. If you have any particular monk build options you're gearing towards later on, I'd be willing to hear them out and give suggestions; I'm still fresh off of building a Stand Still bo-staff monk that was originally an alt-build for Masei so I have some experience building monks if you want someone to bounce ideas off of.

Thanks for running GM, I had a great time with the quest. I always enjoy it when play-by-post GM's are willing to put in the extra effort to RP rather than simply blasting through the scenario at lightspeed. Best of luck with your next game!
