Ithuriel walks along the streets of Anthusis. The humidity of the Mwangi causes his robes to cling tightly to his body as he walks. He is a far older looking man, dressed in an off-white set of robes with an even whiter beard. He is an obvious man of faith as an actual glowing halo slowly revolves around his head a few inches from the top.

While not from Anthusis, he has traveled far from the River Kingdoms where he has spent the majority of his time. His journey has but one simple purpose. He only purpose in life since he was sent down from the heavens is to help Razmir achieve true divinity.

While not perhaps the best swimmer he has eaten seafood before and enjoyed it. Though he has not cleaned a fish of his own.

Ithurel has not known much competition in his life. Back home he is often treated similar to royalty, but he knows that is not the case everywhere he will travel.

A giantess of a woman steps off of an incoming ship, taking in the sights of the harbor with a glowing orange eye as she breathes the moist air. A tangle of unkempt, vividly-green hair cascades down her back to scrape the ground, standing in stark contrast with her coal-black complexion. After briefly rolling her shoulders, she begins to walk towards the center of the city, paying more attention to the state of affairs in Anthusis than to the passerby casting awkward glances at the shard of obsidian erupting from her left eye.

Masei is not from this plane let alone Anthusis, but has come here as part of a pilgrimage to take in the sights of Golarion, specifically seeking to evaluate the state of settlements that have recently recovered from oppressive regimes, making Vidrian a point of interest. (Its probably good that she did not come in on the same boat as Ithuriel.)

While not adept at swimming or fishing, both likely came up on the boat ride here. Masei would thus have some mild experience with the craft, having not turned down the opportunity to learn, but would by no means be an expert.

Masei is generally skeptical of cooperation due to past experiences, but would not turn down an opportunity to experience an aspect of a new culture. She does not compete for the sake of competition, but if pulled into a competition, she will give it her best effort.

A tall, lean, but muscled human male, recently arrived in Anthusis for reasons that are a bit vague even to him, feels a little lost for what to do next. It didn't seem all that long ago that he was traipsing across the northern plains of Nidal dealing with Zon-Kuthon cultists, and now he found himself halfway across Golarion in Anthusis, a city populated almost exclusively by fishermen; or so it seemed when he first disembarked from the ship that had spent many long weeks carrying him here.

To be frank, Mandoo was a little surprised to have made it in one piece. The early part of the voyage had been uneventful enough, but once they started getting close to Mediogalti Island, it turned into a seemingly endless sequence of storms and pirate attacks. He held on for dear life during the squalls and used his trusty bow to help fend off the pirates, but it had been a close-called thing there on a couple of occasions.

With nothing better to do, Mandoo heads toward the nearest inn. He hoped that they had something other than fish on the menu. His upbringing had been far from the sea and the only times he'd dealt with fish had been shooting arrows at them in streams. It's not that he didn't like the taste of fish exactly, it's mainly that he'd been eating an almost exclusively fish-based diet on the voyage here, and if he didn't see another fish for a while, it would be too soon.

A big man in chainmail with an elaborate halberd slung over his shoulder, Dinardin is from the hills of Nirmathas and knows next to nothing of fishing or the sea. A wanderer in search of wrongs to right, he has traveled most recently from the far frozen north and it just seemed to him that travel to someplace warm and humid would be just the thing for some perspective. He took the first ship heading south and now here he is in Anthusia, aimless but unconcerned. He has a habit of being where Iomedae needs him and if from time to time she has no such need, he is content to visit a new place and relax for awhile.

Some paladins are fervent in their thunderous beliefs, but Dinardin is more philosophical. He trusts in the Lady of Swords to set his feet on the right path when the time is right. To him, cooperation is a natural state, having learned the importance of well-timed cooperation at his father's knee in the smelting houses of Longshadow.

Fish and fishing are strange to him. He likes the taste of certain fish baked or roasted, but his stomach roils a bit at the various fish stews that seem so popular.

Background Knowledge:
Nope. Dinardin has absolutely none of those skills!

The Broad Captain Inn (Part One)

Perhaps due to it's low prices, decent fare, and a meticulously maintained bulletin board displaying job opportunities and upcoming events, The Broad Captain Inn seems to be a favorite gathering place for the community at-large and passerby's alike, evidenced by the bustle of local fisherman walking in and out buying tackle, as well as the telltale sign of tourists; aspiring adventurers, mercenaries, and sailors, some already half-bent by the middle of this fine (if humid) morning, and yet other gathered around a bounty sign that reads:

Bounty:

The Silverscales Tournament seeks the brave and the daring!

Join us at the Lower Harbor to pit your skill, wit, and magic against other participants in an exciting competition to catch silver trout and win incredible prizes!

But victory doesn’t simply go to the angler who reels in the most or the biggest fish! Our judges award prizes to crews who embody the Vidric values that brought our liberation: bravery, dedication, cunning, and solidarity. Due to immense popularity, spots for teams are limited! Each crew is required to secure their own fishing spot for the tournament, so come early!

...

Everyone:

Q) Have you been here all morning, or are you arriving just now?
Q) Do you know any of the other PCs here? How so? Recognize a face from the trip?
Q) Describe how your characters met (either already, or just now)! What are you talking about?

Dinardin:

There is a strong smell of "fishy" fish here.

That said, with the right equipment, how hard could it be to fish?

Ithuriel:

"Give a man a pole, and he learns to fish. But, give a man a fish, and he feeds his family tonight!"

The Razmiran church has at least one parable about fishing in the River Kingdoms. But Ithuriel knows that the Ocean has a greater diversity of life than the River - salt water vs fresh water - and while back home he knows that everyone fishes by similar method, out here, proportional to the different kinds of edible sea life, ought be different methods by which to acquire these tasty and foreign creatures. Perhaps even sneaking up on an unsuspecting fish (rolling Stealth) might prove effective?

Maybe he could help feed some Anthusian families tonight? That might help spread the word of the Living God: a full belly!

Mandoo:

You have heard that Anthusis is known to have fishing tournaments, and reckon your "shooting fish" method might be something unexpectedly legal - so long as you could retrieve them dead in the water afterwards!

Having fished before, you imagine that one of the keys to winning a fishing tournament would be settling into a Good Spot, either by scouting it ahead of time (using Nature, Survival, or Fishing Lore), by simply beating others to it (racing with Athletics or Acrobatics, with a bonus / penalty for land speed), or perhaps by asking around (Make a Request of a Friendly competitor / bystander).

This should be fun!

Masei:

Having watched others fish before, you imagine that one of the keys to success is actually settling into a Good Spot, either by scouting it ahead of time (using Nature, Survival, or Fishing Lore), or perhaps by asking around (Make a Request of a Friendly local).

You even reckon you might not be too bad at it if you used your javelin!

A slender Mwangi man toting a single fishing pole in one hand and a small well-used tackle box in the other approaches the bounty board with a mischievous smile, and leaning his pole against the wall, opens the box to produce a notepad, and shutting it, begins to jot some notes from the board, using the box as a writing surface.

Seek (Perception) DC 20:

There is a shiny glint briefly flaring from the box as he opens then shuts it.

Suddenly, someone seems to be yelling at him, and he spins around, nimble like a cat!

"Recently Uncaged Prisoners"

A tall Mwangi woman with dark hair and a red headband lets out a booming laugh.

“Think you can do better this time, Demed?”

She too carries fishing gear. No box, but a well-made pole. Certainly of higher quality than his. She also carries a net at her side. Her tone with him is equal parts honest and contrived: the former in her teasing tone, the latter in her elevated volume, as in calling him out, several of the other patrons turn around to look at him, to see what he will say next!

Trying to brush the public confrontation off his shoulder, the man continues to jot notes into his notebook as he walks to his seat, not bothering to look at her, as if he has something better to do in this very moment!

"Recently Uncaged Prisoners"

The woman snorts derisively before joining him at a table.

“If you can avoid falling into the water, that would already be an improvement.”

She looks back to see if anyone is still watching their exchange, but it seems he was victorious in quelling the crowd's curiosity, as folks have already returned to their business, and slightly dejected, she rests her pole against the table, and smiles at him warmly.

“I think you forget that my crew is the only one that managed two victories in a row, sis,” the man boasts.

“This year we’ll do even better, and you’ll eat your words before the day is over.”

He smiles widely at back at her, mirroring her look of a fierce love for competition burning brightly in his eyes!

Dinardin has been here all morning. He's an early riser and, as a man with nothing to do today, he is also a keen observer of the human condition. Iomedae may set his feet on the right path, but the path never starts when he is abed.

The paladin certainly recognizes at least some of his fellow Pathfinders from the boat ride and he'd have taken the time to speak to any travelers willing to speak to him and get to know at least a little something about those willing to share.

So With the approval of my fellow players, I'd say that they are enjoying small talk after breakfast when the story begins.

"Fishing," says Dinardin Before the encounter with the brother and sister. "What little I've done has been for brook trout in the hills. Are any of you fellows fishermen?"

Although not a Pathfinder yet, Masei has been actively studying the Pathfinders to determine if they are an organization worthy of joining. As such, Masei is likely loosely familiar with Dinardin from the boatride here, but was more willing to ask questions than to answer them on the trip here.

Masei had been up for several hours before dawn to survey the town in silence, but makes it a point to visit the Broad Captain's Inn as the locals gather for breakfast, less to partake in food and more to grasp current events. Upon seeing Dinardin with a table and the lack of otherwise available seating, she opts to join his breakfast. Much of her contributions to the conversation have been wordy questions about the Pathfinder Society and its goals and accomplishments historically, with occasional observations about the tavern they currently occupy.

"You have already borne witness to the breadth of my fishing experience, Pathfinder. You would know better than I how we measure up as anglers." Masei pokes aimlessly at her meal, taking in the atmosphere of the room, among other things. (regarding the Perception check)

Recalling the word the man used to refer to the woman, Masei chooses to address her first, not understanding the assumed familiarity associated with the term. "Hail, 'Sis.' Are you and this man referring to this 'Silverscales Tournament?' Reading of its supposed popularity here has made me curious as to its cultural relevance within this settlement. Would you be available to satisfy aspects of my curiosity?"

The nearest inn turns out to be the Broad Captain Inn, and as he enters, Mandoo notices a group gathered around the bulletin board. He's torn between curiosity at what all the excitement might be and a growling stomach that could use a meal. The whole place smells rather fishy, and he suspects the menu will reflect that. His curiosity wins in the end and he joins the crowd at the board.

All it turns out to be is a call for teams to participate in yet another fishing tournament. He'd heard that Anthusis was known for its fishing tournaments, but he hadn't realized just how big a deal they were here. Mandoo shrugs. "Amazing the sort of thing that will excite people. I mean, really. Catching fish? How difficult is that?" Still, he could use the prize money, and if all it took was catching a bunch of fish, he had time on his hands and plenty of arrows to spare. All he had to do was figure out where the good fishing spots were around here, and he already had some experience with that. The only serious problem was that he couldn't go it alone. Apparently a crew of some sort was needed.

Mandoo notices the slender Mwangi man with the fishing pole approach and take out his notebook...

Perception (Seek): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

...but notices nothing out of the ordinary. The man gets into an exchange with a tall Mwangi woman which suggests that they are siblings; each with their own crew; and each apparently interested in participating in the competition.

Mandoo decides to chance the menu after all. Sure enough, it reads like the daily catch. "Sigh!" Ordering a large serving of kippers and scrambled eggs, he takes his breakfast and goes looking for a place to eat them. The Broad Captain Inn is a popular place for breakfast apparently, and he's forced to share a table with a group of fellow out-of-towners, some of which he recognized as passengers from his own ship.

The big guy in the chainmail with the long polearm was called Dinardin. Mandoo remembers him from the ship, though given the monk's natural introversion, they'd exchanged no more than an occasional nod while aboard. Not wanting to be seen as rude, Mandoo joins in the smalltalk between mouthfuls of herring and egg. "You don't look like the fisherman type to me, Dinardin." He glances at the paladin's long weapon. "Maybe you could use your long pointy stick there to spear some if they get close enough." Mandoo then jabs his head in the direction of the bounty board. "Why all this talk of fishing? Are you interested in joining the competition?" He gets back to his meal, but spares the occasional glance at his tablemates. "What a strange bunch we must look like to the locals," he thinks, and laughs to himself.

The kippers it turned out were rather good; maybe he'd go back for more when he was done.

Hurriedly, a server walks over to Mandoo "Kippers and eggs, okay" and to Dinardin "What'll it be?" and start listing off the fresh catches of the day, followed by the standard fare, altogether, consisting of no less than 3d8 ⇒ (6, 8, 3) = 17 different species of seafood cooked 2d6 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11 different ways with maybe 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 different kinds of spices.

The large and very strange-looking orc seated with them sure did speak in a strange way. Her weird glowing eye was bad enough, but the piece of black glass jutting from her other eye was positively off-putting.

Mandoo was not all that great at dealing with people and as such, tended to keep to himself as much as possible. But it wouldn't do to have the locals getting upset at them, at least not while he was in the middle of enjoying his excellent meal.

He turns to the two Mwangi fisherfolk and tries to defuse the situation. "Please pay my friend here no heed. Like myself, she is new in town and knows not the local ways. I too am interested in this tournament, and as it appears that you two are the experts here, perhaps you can tell us more about it?"

Mandoo hopes that some of the more silver-tongued at the table can bring these two around. He suspects that making them friendlier towards them might prove useful if he and his new friends were to enter this competition.

The monk may not be good with people, but he was good at sizing them up in a hurry. He gives each of the siblings a close looking over to see if he can determine anything useful about them from their demeanor.

He takes a few more bites of fish and thinks things over. Demed was likely a lost cause at this point, so there seemed little downside to Mandoo trying to molify him. "Surely I couldn't do any worse than that odd priest fellow. Could I?"

Turning to Demed, he says, "Now, now. No need to get huffy. The fellow meant no harm. It's just that the tournament caught our eye and we were deciding whether it was worth entering. As you can plainly see, we're not experienced fishermen and would only be joining as a lark; to kill some time before departing your fine city. But if you don't think your impressive rod and tackle there can handle our stiff competition, we'll leave you to play with them on your own." He takes another bite and watches Demed's reaction.

We thought the competition might be a fun way to pass the time and let us pick up some fishing skills from the local experts such as yourself. I see your pole is more impressive than your brother's there... he is your brother, right?" Mandoo looks from one to the other, then back to Deka. Clutching his tackle box close, and then grabbing his pole "Like I said: put your money where your mouth is and enter the tournament. If you can beat me, well, then you can know that you have beaten the best!" he smiles here broadly and toothily - it seems his initial reaction has been dissolved by the excitement of the tournament.

Scanning the party with his eyes, he offers a single word of advice "Your three friends:" addressing Ithuriel directly here, man to man "Tell them to buy a net!"

And with that, having gathered his things, Demed walks off to go get his fishing spot, following nearly half the Inn who begin trickling out in the same direction...

Deka smiles at Dinardin and Mandoo.

"Don't mind him: He is always talking big. Look. If you are serious about entering, there isn't much time to waste. You can probably still buy some tackle from the rows of vendors outside - but they will soon begin packing up to leave for the Lower Harbor!"

She points as the throng of people begin to shift a new direction, table by table, team by team, spectator by spectator.

"Two hour walk to get there! And trust me: All the good spots go fast!" She clashes her cup of tea against the champion's, sipping the last of it, and depositing the empty cup on the table, flicking a copper piece next to it.

"Follow me!" she invites the party down the way, and eager look in her eyes, a haste in her step!

The docks creak under the weight of the crowd. Mwangi and Chelaxian citizens stand shoulder to shoulder in the midday sun, waiting for the excitement to begin. Some aspiring anglers seem to have already chosen their spot, while others are carefully scanning the waters for a glimpse of the glimmering scales that give the tournament its name.

A silver-haired Zenj woman wearing a judge’s colorful sash raises her hands to silence the crowd. With a warm smile, she utters a single sentence that unleashes a flurry of activity.

"Thanks, Deka. I'll make it up to you later."

Mandoo considers for an instant whether Deka's "secret spot" suggestion was actually an effort on her part to lead him astray and thus remove him as a threat from the competition. He does a quick survey of the situation and shrugs. "Looks like as good a spot as any."

I'm assuming here that Mandoo essentially made his Survey for Fishing Spot roll and is now trying to Catch Fish like Demed.

Wasting no more time, he quickly takes off after Demed to claim Deka's suggested "secret spot" for himself. He also has no time to figure out how to use the fancy fishing rod he'd just bought, so Mandoo instead falls back on the method he used when hunting in the foothills of the Kodar Mountains with his master Ajit. He takes the fishing line; attaches several lengths of it to the backs of some of his arrows; and ties the other ends to his wrist.

Taking his shortbow in hand, he calms his breath and angles his body to the water for maximum effect. He then nocks one of his modified arrows and waits perfectly still for a fish to make an appearance. He ignores the smaller fish and a few moments later, spots a good sized one near the surface. Letting his breath out halfway, he takes aim and shoots.

Catch Fish w/ Shortbow (Strike) vs DC 12: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

His arrow strikes true and he pulls on the attached fishing line to bring in his first catch of the day. He then nocks another arrow and repeats the procedure.

I'll assume only one roll per PC per round.

Out of the corner of his eye, he watches Demed to see if he can pick up any pointers.

Atae arrives! (Go ahead and introduce yourself and get caught up!)

Ithuriel concurs with Deka's advice to Mandoo that his "secret spot" will be sufficient. (Success. Still need more Successes from other PCs!)

Mandoo then gets to work shooting fish - which seems to work really well, even as they now lie dead in the water. (Critical Success)

Between Rounds (see below), which represent about 15 minutes of time each, diversity of strategy is strongly encouraged. Repeating a skill or check bears a cumulative -2 circumstance penalty! Creativity is also encouraged, assessed against a DC 15 if the method is narratively feasible (as judged by QM), or lower or higher depending upon the player's description.

Since it appears that the net included in the fishing tackle is insufficient, then Mandoo would also have purchased a grappling net.

With a Survival of +6 and the +1 circumstance bonus, Mandoo will def be switching to his fishing pole next round. Even with the penalty it's probably worth switching back to shooting arrows after that before finally using his Athletics +4 with the net.

Then again... Thinking a little out of the box here. Mandoo has Stealth and Thievery at +7. Can he use Stealth to stand quietly in the water and grab at passing fish? How about sneaking up to Demed and stealing one of his fish? Acrobatics at +7 also has to be useful for something. Maybe he can carefully balance himself with the use of some rope to lean way over the edge of the dock to skewer a fish with an arrow or something? Are any of these feasible? What would the DCs be?

Rather than choosing a spot at random as the cry goes out from the judge, Masei immediately breaks into a dead sprint, shouldering other competitors out of the way to reach the spot they had been eying first. Upon reaching the spot, she pulls forth her scythe and slams the head of the weapon into the ground. "This site has been claimed by the jurisdiction of Masei Alsharei. Challenge my authority at your own peril."

After glaring away any fishermen that seemed unwilling to leave or were willing to contest the claim, Masei looks over the water before grinding the remains of her fish from the restaurant casting them into the waters. The chum will need time to settle. I shall resort to the net once the fish have become more active. Until then, I shall utilize the techniques taught by the wise men of the boat. With that, she pulls out the Fishing Tackle and casts a line to start, opting to begin with a more traditional method before a more aggressive means.
