Feeling Damon about to surge up and out of their hiding spot, Kokam grabbed his arm....hard. She gets right up close to his ear, "What do you think you're doing, Damon. They are our distraction! So we can get in the Garrison and destroy the wardstone...they can take care of themselves!"

I hope... she thought to herself as the demon worm loomed over Onyx.

"Come, the guards are distracted by our friends...let's get inside!" she hissed, moving to go around the combat towards the entrance...

Let’s call this an insight check for Damon...

Insight: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Flinching at Kokam’s touch, Damon was shaken out of his tactical battle reaction to save his friend Onyx by her wise words. Gritting his teeth, Damon assessed the strategic situation, grunted a quick prayer for his friend, ”Iomedae protect you, Onyx,” and channeled his anxious energy into slinking towards the entrance with Kokam instead of rushing in to save his friend as he so devoutly wished to do.

OOC: I don't think I made it clear but I am waiting to see what you guys do to move this thing along.

Options include:

a) get involved with melee
b) wait until melee is over
c) try to sneak (or not) to the entrance and get in
d) other? some combination of above?

It sounds like the option so far is b) but let me know otherwise.

Damon wanted to rush into battle but was convinced by Kokam to honor his friend’s sacrifice by sticking to the plan, so it looks like “c” for him as he follows Kokam’s lead.

Damon started to rise, along with Hallvardr's lust for battle, but both were held in check as Kokam, ever wise, halted the Paladin, both with a touch and valuable counsel. The viking sunk back down, remaining in place while his desires for combat strained against an unseen leash.

Die well Onyx, he muttered, sure that the Teifling was bound for the afterlife.

Let's not waste this then... lead on - how do we we use this to get on?

Rosscoe nods, "You heart is in the right. But you also honor their courage. They chose the hazard for us to gain the door. Plenty of foes will welcome us." He pulls his rapier, takes a few steps turns and continues walking backward, "Lets prepare our response to this welcome." He turns and runs following the others toward the objective.

"Breaking down the door will make too much noise. Let me help boost you to the small shutter, Roscoe," said Damon, still distracted by the battle raging so close by. The conflicted Paladin aids Hallvardr in boosting Roscoe to the shutter (Help action, Athletics perhaps).

If Onyx looks like he is going down underneath the wave of demon worms (as opposed to escaping them/withdrawing/etc.), Damon will use a bonus action to --as quietly as possible-- pray for Iomedae's protection on his friend once more, this time expending the spell slot to give the prayer a bit more punch (Sanctuary, DC 14 Will, with the idea of keeping the worms from eating Onyx alive while he is unconscious if it comes to that.

Action #1
Stella followed along behind the others begrudgingly, unable to keep her eyes off the creatures, and her allies, that were forced to deal with them on their behalf. "This isn't right..." she said quietly to herself as she watched on in horror as the beings seemingly devolved into a host of worms. Vaguely hearing the comment about Roscoe, she instinctually reached her hand out and touched the gnome as she mumbled a quick prayer, for both Roscoe and the those fighting in front of them. Keeping her focus on the fight in front of them, she thought to herself, Screw the plan if this goes on for much longer...

Guidance on Roscoe for his next skill check

OOC: I'd like to recap later today if possible...

INSPIRATION

In general (and in both my games), players are reluctant to use inspiration and I like to give inspiration. I'm going to modify the rule such that you can accumulate 'two inspirations' (but no more) so that you feel you can use one and save another for a 'rainy day' (that death save I have coming for you). :)

Remember that the best (only?) way to gain inspiration in my games is to show everyone that you're super involved in the game by writing up an awesome scene.

If Roscoe chooses not to or fails to pick the locked door, Damon will keep his help action to boost the halfling to the shutter. If he succeeds with the lockpicking, Damon will move through the door into the Garrison. In either case, he keeps a watchful eye out for Onyx with tha aforementioned bonus action.

Damon led the way in and extended his senses into the building (using Divine Sense) as the others moved in. He gestured for the last one through to close the door behind them as he moved off to the east, recalling at least the initial part of the map sketched by the curator.

Idly wondering where Radiance had been displayed in the museum, he drew the glowing blade as he moved, keeping an eye and ear out for any trouble as he progressed along the route toward the stairway to the second level.

There was a visible sigh of relief on Stella's face as the Demon seemingly changed course and left the unconscious Onyx alone. With the creature vanquished by the paladin soon after, Stella entered the Fort knowing she could put her full effort and attention into the mission at hand.

As the group was about to move east, Stella quietly whispered to the others, "Should we make sure there's no one behind us?" as she pointed in the direction of the Westerly room.

Sorry, got hammered by work....

Kokam watched as Damon's prayers were answered and the heaving mass of worms ignored the hapless Onyx and moved away. Letting out the breath she hadn't noticed holding, she turned to the door and watched as Roscoe tried to pick the door....and tried...and tried again. She was almost at the point of trying to kick the door in when the click signaled the halfling's success.

Slipping past the door, Kokam spared a look back and was so glad see Onyx taken away by Lann and Irabeth.

She paused inside the door to grab Damon's hand, squeezing it silently , both in thanks for listening to her ( and apology for speaking harshly ) and for his prayer, likely saving Onyx.

Releasing Damon's hand, she murmured to herself at the defacement of the once beautiful frieze, shaking her head at the obvious beauty that had once shone forth. She resistde the urge to grab whatever was at hand and begin cleaning the defaced piece of art; knowing once the Demon was beaten back, it would be restored.

She nodded at Damon's comment to guard their back, and moves to the western entrance, peeking into that room to ensure none could surprise them.

Holding still she watched with a smile as Stella's beautiful butterfly landed on her arm, lightly touching the spot.

Looking back at Kokam before moving onto the next room, Damon paused a moment to see what she found before he continued.

(Waiting for Kokam's reaction, as she is the only one who saw what was in the previous room. Tactically, if we can sneak away and avoid the battle, that would be best--unless we start a battle a few rooms from now and the four tieflings run up and flank us...so it could go either way.)

Kokam peeked around the corner and saw the tieflings at play, frowning at the blatant disregard for the remains of the fallen. Resisting the urge to leap into battle, she turned back....seeing Damon looking her way...with an odd little smile on his face.

The thought that the smile was for her brought a little flush to her face ,but she quickly remembered this was neither the time or place for such musings.

She held up four fingers, and made the shape of horns coming from her head, then pointed into the next room, pantomiming playing cards.

She then raised an eyebrow to her friends , as to what to do...the look on her face left no doubt as to her own very bloody thoughts on the matter...

His reluctance to strike an enemy dishonorably cost Damon, as the tiefling twisted just enough for the sword to glance off his armor and punch through the chair behind him.
