Horrified at the savagery of the attack Kokam was subjected to, Damon stepped up to the southwest as he drew Radiance once more, its glowing light flooding into the room as he stabbed vigorously at the demon who had nearly killed Kokam with two fearsome raking claws!
"Fall back, Kokam. I will hold the line," said the young paladin, worried at the severity of her wounds. (If he hits, Damon will smite evil on the demon.)
Radiance Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1d4 ⇒ (12) + 6 + (1) = 19
Radiance Damage: 1d8 + 6 + 3d8 ⇒ (2) + 6 + (7, 7, 1) = 23
Stabbing deeply into the body of the demon with its fearsome bloody claws, Damon channeled his concern for Kokam into a white-hot fury that seared the innards of the unnatural creature with holy light!

Kokam Kawlo |

Poison dc 13: 1d20 + 1 + 1d4 ⇒ (13) + 1 + (4) = 18
The long scratches burned horribly, but the sensation faded quickly as Kokam nodded at the wisdom of Damon's words, "I'll be back..." was all she said as she backed away from the demons, her spear point raised to keep them back.
Disengage to join the others...
Kokam winced at the blood seeping into her clothes from the demon's blows, beseeching her friends, "Healing please, I must go back and help Damon..."

Roscoe Tosscobble |

Roscoe scrambled through both doors and into the corner of the room with the demons and the Tiefling.
Just to the left of the door in the corner.
He took aim with his sling and sent a stone at one of the demons engaged with Kokam.
If we want to go with the numbers I had before it was 24 to hit and 6 damgage. If not. Sling: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Round 7
Moving to the south of Kokam, the Viking slams his shield into the face of one of the demonic claw monsters, attempting to knock it to the ground!
Athletics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Shoving a Creature
Using the Attack action, you can make a special melee attack to shove a creature, either to knock it prone or push it away from you. If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them. The target must be no more than one size larger than you and must be within your reach. Instead of making an attack roll, you make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). If you win the contest, you either knock the target prone or push it 5 feet away from you.
He yells out the blessings of healing on Kokam...
Bonus Action Healing Word: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Stella Destino |

Making her way into the next room, Stella was shocked by the sudden appearance of the clawed demons and Kokam's grievous wounds. Seeing that the others had begun to heal her, Stella fired off a blast of radiant energy at the Demon Damon just struck, arching her shot up and over him before striking the crown of the creature's head.

"Hallvardr and I will focus on the demon--take down the Tiefling if you can," responded Damon, assessing that he was not quick enough to get to the tiefling and still attack.
Instead he moved to the other side of Hallvardr and flanked the clawed demon with the Ulfen warrior, saying, "Strike hard and fast, warrior of Gorum."

Kokam Kawlo |

Kokam sighs as both Hallvardr and Roscoe's healing balms wash over her, a confusing sensation : Hallvardr's like a blast of cold northern air, Roscoe's like the warm feeling in the belly after a stiff drink.
If Damon and Hallvardr take down the demon
Refreshed, Kokam returns to the other room to see one Demon down and the other falling under the blades of Damon and Hallvadr. Heeding Damon and Roscoe's warning she runs after the Tiefling...

With another blaze of speed, Kokam ascended the stairs to accost the Tiefling...

Her spear plunged deep into the Demon's corrupted fresh, a gout of black ichor staining the wood of the weapon. A swift kick at the point of impact further damaged the outsider's body.

Happy Holidays everyone!
Realizing that there wasn't enough room to conjure restraining vines, Stella decided to throw magical fire at the fleeing tiefling instead hoping to distract him somehow. Her attack ended up sailing high but managed to graze the tiefling's head.

Shove down would allow party to take advantage of its prone state, particularly useful as I act after monster but before party... and if it's spending Half it's movement to rise, it's not chasing Kokam (potentially), and making AoO's if we move past it less likely to hit... did the demon make the athletics check? The lack of effectiveness of this and grapple in this edition is a rare weakness in a pretty darn good system. I'm happy with rules as is, and banked on it, but the YouTube channel Taking20 has a good house rule on it if you're interested

Awesome writing!!! I'll incorporate it moving forward.
Merry Christmas all!!

Stella Destino |

I think both Shoving and Grappling and have their uses though they'd work best if they happened near the top of the initiative order so that more party members can take advantage of them before they get back up. If someone has the grappler feat, then grappling to get advantage on attacks is a pretty solid strategy.

I chose the Dragon Starry Form (for improved Con saves among other things) as I was hoping we could keep being sneaky after the first tiefling fight and wanted to keep 'Pass Without a Trace' active. That idea is probably moot though now that the jig is probably up and everyone in the building is on alert for us
Needing to silence the tiefling before more enemies approached, Stella launched another ball of fire at him, striking he squarely in the shoulder.

Wrenching his glowing sword from the ribcage of the slain demon, Damon slid past Stella and rushed up behind Kokam, resting the back of his sword hand lightly against her as she fought the cultist. Letting the warm light of Iomedae's healing flow into her, he says, "I am with you, Kokam."
Action to Lay on Hands for 10 points healing on Kokam.
(Damon is down to 1 spell remaining, as he used his second slot to smite the demon earlier in the fight)

With the last tiefling knocked out, Stella healed both Kokam & Hallvarðr who seemed to take the most damage during the fight. Then looking at the remains of the demons they'd just fought, Stella poked them with her staff before saying with a sigh, "I've never seen anything like these creatures before. I feel like the more we fight back, the stranger and more twisted our enemies become." After pausing for a moment she continues, "Should we continue up these stairs or try and see if there might be another way up to the second floor? While no one's come down yet, it doesn't mean that they're not waiting for us on the other side."
Still have 'Pass without a Trace' active if we want to go sneaking somewhere

”I think that these are the only stairs from this level according to our map,” said Damon, searching the cultists for anything useful—especially those keys. ”I suggest we grab whatever is useful from our defeated foes and move forward quickly. I don’t know how long our allies can keep the demons away from this building.”

Remembering his lock picks this time. He chimes in, "Ahh is the door locked. I can try to open it."
Don't forget the keys the Tiefling was fumbling with.

Roscoe Tosscobble |

"He had keys? I was focusing on my aim." He added a wink. He bends down and grabs the keys looks at the lock and the door. He looks over the door and listens close before trying the most reasonable key.

"I suppose you're right. Though we may want to lock the door behind us in case more enemies try and chase after us." Stella added.

Managing just a couple of words as he raised his shield to ward off the blows of the enemy, Damon said, "More cultists."
(More to come on Damon's initiative count. From what I read in the rules, one can't move through the enemy squares, so Damon will have to try and shove one with his shield if they are still blocking the way on his turn.)

![]() |

Good information, thanks. I didn't know that about Tumble, but I found it in the DMG with a bit of searching. Damon is not particularly acrobatic, however, so that may not be the best option if he is still blocked by his turn.
Roscoe, in a typical hallway I would agree with you, but these cultists are defending their lair right now, and backing off would allow them to close and lock the door, so maybe not the best strategy overall even if the tactics are sound. That being said, we have ranged attacks and spells, and they don't appear to, so Damon going defensive until someone takes down the cultist in the way is also an option.
Once Kokam and Roscoe are done with their turns and the enemies go, Damon will reassess.

Fabian Benavente |

Once Kokam and Roscoe are done with their turns and the enemies go, Damon will reassess.
OOC: Yeah, what he said! :)
All kidding aside, I think these situations are 'realistic' (says a guy who plays RPGs) and fun to play. However, if it gets too tedious, then let me know.
Questions?
Game on!

Roscoe Tosscobble |

Roscoe is in the back of the line. He would have to double move and tumble to get into action (danger). He would likely delay until he could move up and support what's happening.
"We're with you big guy. Push ahead." He calls down for divine aid.
Bless on Damon, Hall and Kokam.

Fabian Benavente |

Fabian, is Kokam able to hit the cultist at the top of the stairs from where she is?
OOC: No, her best bet to attack would be to move right-down-right and then attack.
This movement would cost her 30', which she has, and would not incur an opportunity attack.

Am a fan of the realism... it may be a bit boring initially if we can't all pile in but this IS how people would defend a place
