As the cultists flowed past him like water, Damon was able to protect himself from their strikes this time. Then one ended up sandwiched between himself and Hallvardr.

Smiling his thanks at the companions who healed him, the young paladin indicated the flanked enemy and said, "This one's yours, Hallvardr, if you can beat Kokam to the attack!", continuing to concentrate on the enemy in the doorway (Cultist 2).

Kokam only had a moment to savor the victory over the cultist, when the tieflings surged through Damon's bulwark.

Her spear was slow in rising from the still body of the cultist, failing to block a nearby tiefling's attack. Scowling at the sudden pain of a long scratch down her arm, she realized she'd sport yet another visible scar, a trophy of their exploits and victories.

She settled herself amid the close quarters tumult and struck back at the tiefling...

Attack, spear, two-handed, bless: 1d20 + 6 + 1d4 ⇒ (20) + 6 + (2) = 28 Crit!

...her spear thrust quickly forward, catching the tiefling full in the shoulder, perceptibly lifting his frame up from the ground. A hasty block with the flat of his sword prevented Kokam's kick from doing any lasting damage.

Breathing heavily, Damon said, "Sorry, Stella, it happened too fast to take a prisoner, but it looks like the information is in this room here."

Wiping off his bloodied blade on the last cultist killed, Damon sheathed Radiance and pulled out his healing potion, quaffing it in one swift motion. Headed into the room to the north, he looked at the papers and asks, "Does anyone want to carefully examine the papers as they sit, or should we just grab what looks important and keep moving?"

Replacing his healing potion with one from the party storage (1 of the 2 regular healing potions), Damon consulted the map drawn by the curator and added, "Looks like the next steps up are in the room to the southwest...But we can't take much more of this. Should we push on, or risk a short rest?"

This room is treasure beyond compare... if we didn't have an objective? I would say we should clear the room and take it back immediately. I don't think we have time to rest... we need to secure the building or risk failure. The ritual of corruption may be completed, the Wardstone moved or those key to the ritual escaping to try again later... if we can heal with potions, well and good... but we need to move and move hard!

"I'm not so sure." Stella began as she looked around at all the information plastered around the room. "We've just been in 3 intense battles back to back and we have no idea who or what's lurking on the top floor (or what it even looks like). I'd rather risk the chance and rest, even if we're interrupted, so that we can make our final charge near full strength rather than rush while we're all exhausted."

Damon considered carefully what Stella and Hallvardr had to say, then prayed briefly to Iomedae. Coming to a decision, he suggested to the others, "The fight against the demons rests on a razor's edge, and should we engage a strong enemy while we are tired, we may well be defeated. However, if we wait, the corruption of the Wardstone may be completed before we can stop it, and those pledged to our cause outside may be overrun trying to keep the demons from returning to their headquarters. I say we use up our healing potions and push through to the top floor now."

"If this is our fate, so be it," Damon said determinedly looking at each one of his companions in turn. "If we must die to spare thousands from a corrupted Wardstone explosion I will do so gladly...though I would prefer to live." he finished as his gaze lingered a bit longer on the last of his companions, the Iomedaen monk.

Not sure who has the magic item we are supposed to use on the Wardstone to destroy it--not in our list in the items section. If people agree to move on, I suggest we use at least the next two regular healing potions and Damon will expend his remaining 10 hp of lay on hands to top people off.

OOC: Damon has made his opinion known--he would prefer to not rest, use healing potions, and head to the door that opens to the room with the stairwell going up. That should be the door to the southwest of their current location assuming the map from the curator is good. Hallvardr wants to move on, Stella wants to rest, Kokam and Roscoe have yet to weigh in.

Stella sighed but gave a nod of agreement to the Paladin's words. She knew both choices were risky, but, she was a crusader now she supposed, and that meant being completely willing to charge ahead and sacrifice her life for the greater good. And while she was not inherently fearful of death, the realization that these might be her final moments, here with her newly discovered friends, hit her harder than she expected it to. "So be it." she began more formally than normal in an attempt to keep he emotions in check. "If we're going to move, let's be quick about it then. Prepare and grab what you need from here and let's be off. I'll monitor the hallway for any activity."

Thinking through his equipment, Damon couldn't come up with anything useful. Considering their options, he said, "Perhaps we can find a lever of some kind nearby--maybe in the planning room we just left. Stella can give us her blessing, and we can work together to wedge this door open--what do you think, Kokam?"

(Help action, Guidance, and an Athletics check?)

"Maybe there's a key in another part of this floor?" Stella asked the others. "We don't know for sure that the people above are waiting for us to charge through the door. Opening the door by force again would give away any hope of us having some sort of advantage again."

Speaking quietly, Damon responded, "Yes, but we could also provoke another battle in so doing," as he looked through the map room for something to use as a lever.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Preparing to open the door with the improvised lever and help from Kokam and/or Hallvardr, Damon asked Stella, "If you feel strongly about searching elsewhere, let us be quick. If not, please bestow us guidance that we may open this door quickly and cleanly."

Stella wants to explore elsewhere:

"As you wish, Stella. Pick a door for us to try, and pray that we find the key quickly," responded the young Paladin, moving away from the locked door to try the path suggested by his friend.

Stella gives her blessing/guidance:

Strength Check 1: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Strength Check 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Guidance: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Total with Guidance and Help = 21

Divine guidance smiled on the group as the improvised lever found a fortunate placement and the door popped open in one coordinated shove!

"I am probably just overthinking this," Stella replied. "Let's keep moving and finish this."

She then touched Damon lightly on the shoulder imparting, what she hoped, was some of Desna's luck upon him.
