Just setting up the discussion thread...

male

Welcome!

I know this PBP but we will get to know each other during these months (years?) of play. I am currently playing with people I met in the early 2000s.

And,no, you don't have to share any info if you you don't want.

My name is Fabian; I am a 51-year old engineer, father of two teenage girls. I have been playing these games since high school with a prolonged break here and there.

I like to read and write fantasy stuff and this is my creative outlet.

Anyone else care for introductions?

Heyo!

So I have not sat idle during our time waiting for submissions to be done. I had an idea that I wanted to run by you fabian:

I know that the artificer uses tools to cast their spells, but I was wondering if you might be open to me having a specific device for each of my spells? I had the idea that (for example) the light cantrip might be a flashlight, or I could have a pistol (or crossbow, should you not want to allow guns) that is used for fire bolt, and so on.

I've been picturing Artur having a Batman style utility belt with a variety of devices that he can draw on to create spell effects.

GAME STUFF

I have Turn 000 almost ready to go and I will send it out no later than this Friday.

However, let's get some pre-game stuff sorted out.

I want to see your PC sheets. I don't anticipate any issues but I need them to set up my 'combat spreadsheet'. Remember that you are 5th level.

MAGIC ITEMS
Feel free to have two (2) minor common items and two (2) minor uncommon items per Xanathar's Guide to Everything.

HOW DO YOU KNOW EACH OTHER?
We need to figure this out soon. My initial thought is that the warforged wizard, human artificer, and elf bard all know each other and are living in Sharn.

One of these three (or all three) know the female ranger that is currently in the Eldeen Reaches. How? War heroes? Worked before?
And you know each other so well that you decided to visit her. Maybe you all said that you would meet back in a couple of years or something like that?

The male kalashtar does not need to know anyone but could if desired since he also was in Sharn.

Thoughts?

I love this!

Yes, anyone can reskin anything in my games as long as the mechanics are not altered.

In fact, I expect you guys to describe the effects of your actions whether they be spells or not.

I will probably give you guys magic items and ask you to come up with their history and appearance.

Game on!

Aye, introductions:

My name is Steven, and I am an mid-40s IT professional and Army veteran (I stopped tracking my age like a decade ago, cause who really cares? I sure don't!). I live in Des Moines, Iowa (well, techincally a suburb of Des Moines, but still) and I have been playing dnd and games like it since my uncle invited me into his dnd game at the ripe old age of 5 that he ran out of the back of a comic book store in the late 70s/early 80s.

So I assume we're doing standard point buy for stats?

Yes, 27 point buy or take one of the predetermined arrays.

Female Half-Orc (Mark of Finding) Ranger (Horizon Walker) 5

Hello! I'm Book, also an engineer actually, though since I'm in my twenties much earlier in my career then you Fabian. I started PbP about a year ago now, moved for work and needed some sort of social/gaming outlet. Practical stuff, my timezone is AEST and most of my posts will fall outside of normal working hours. I use she/her pronouns. I'll get my mechanics finalised Friday evening for consideration.

As for connections to Kela. She could have been to Sharn when she was younger for family business. The Gatekeepers seem to have had little involvement in the war as an organisation, but Kela would have offered aid if it was needed. Let me know what ideas you have.

Oh and Fabian do you have a preference for Standard or Unearthed Arcana Ranger in your games?

I thought that the ranger only changed significantly for the beast master option and given that you were going with another option (horizon walker), it would not affect you.

However, it seems that other things have changed as well but both rangers are still valid.

I really have no preference but let's stay consistent once one is picked.

I'll let you pick.

I'll wait to hear what others have to say with regards to connections between PCs.

Questions?

I have a question about an idea for a common item that I'd like to get possibly approved:

I have an idea for a collapsable shield; basically, it is worn like a gauntlet but, with an (bonus action?) activation, becomes a standard shield fastened to the same arm. The same action would collapse it back down into a gauntlet.

I think it would be in the same vein as the collapsable pole, but I wanted to get your opinion on it.

That's fine.

However, given that the collapsible pole is activated with an action, how's this?

I'll let you activate the collapsible shield with an action and use it the same round (i.e., gain the AC benefit) or activate it with a bonus action but gain the AC benefit on the following round.

Fair?

Everything looks pretty good. A couple of notes:

- write down your spell slots;
- write down your spellsmith ability;
- write down that you know the mending cantrip; and
- select or your roll your characteristics (personality trait, ideal, etc.).

Once the game gets under way, you'll have to let me know which items you have infused.

Also, which items are 'tinkered' and with what effect?

This PC sounds like a lot of fun to play.

Other than that, I think you're ready to go.

Ya, I missed that it was in his stat block and didn't update it, but I fixed it in his alias.

I also added his spell slots to his tagline.

I'll go ahead and pick the background rp stuff and get it added as well.

As far as starting infused stuff goes, I'm going to be going with bag of holding and enhanced defense (which I'll note as well....somewhere).

Hey

I'm a late 40's trained engineer but now executive. American born but emigrated to Canada for the wife. On Eastern time. Been playing RPG since the red box.

I've limited posted time during the week, so I'll get the game mechanics updated on Saturday.

This character was built for game that didn't last long. He is a dragonmarked elf from Phiarlan who created fake identifications during the war and now is trying to make it as a singer/songwriter in Sharn. He has an older brother who is a successful Opera singer.

I am fine with this PC; we just need to find a good way to get him to a little hamlet in the Eldeen Reaches. :)

Did you want to make a new PC? I'd be fine with that as well but I'd like to have a good concept done fairly quickly (1-2 days).

POSTING TIMES
Before I forget, I live in South Carolina (US EST timezone) and I will try to post a turn recap in the evening/nights.

I 'normally' sit in front of my PC all day and can check/post small stuff throughout the day.

I could look at a different concept but that will take even more time. I’ll look at what we have in the party and the hook of the intro.

I’ve about 30 minutes each weekday evening to post. Weekends is when I have more time. But not when I’ve my usual Tuesday RL game or occasional evening requirements. Currently I’m at the dealer servicing my car, so I’ve time now, but it’s highly unusual.

If my posting frequency is problem, let’s identify it now.

Cheers

No need to come up with a different PC; I just thought I offer up the option.

Is your posting frequency a problem? I don't know. You tell me. Do you think you can read a turn recap, read everyone's posts (hopefully a couple of paragraphs every day) and write a couple of paragraphs for your own post?

If so then great; that's what the recruitment post stated were the 'terms'. If not then maybe this game isn't for you.

The typical PBP game where everyone posts a couple of sentences every couple of days seems to work for most people. However, I quickly lose interest if the game moves this slow.

I'm not trying to sound mean or anything but I think it's to everyone's benefit to have expectation clear up front.

Hello hello everyone, I Thomas, and am a Data Manager in my early 40's.

This will be my first real PBP campaign, though I am playing a Pathfinder 2e Society PBP game right now as well.

My first real exposure to RPGs where the Powers and Perils books someone gave me back in high school, but my first gaming session was D&D 2e a few years later in college.

Other than a short break last year when I had some mental health issues, I've played one version of Society game (4e, Pathfinder, or 5e) weekly for the past decade or so. Home campaigns, not so much, though my last one ended quite epically.

I love fantasy and sci-fi, but particularly the world-building, and I do read RPG books for fun. I like to world-build, and have close to half-a-gig of various world building notes.

--

Nyd, whose name is based on the viking word for 'need' or 'hardship', is one of several warforged characters I have made.

I picture Nyd as using a metal spellbook, in which the magic is carved, or possible a Spellshard. Would I need Tinker's, Smith's, or Calligraphy tools to maintain it? Which ever tool she would need to work in their spellbook would be what integrated tool they have.

(This is Nyd's only copy of their spellbook, replicating it is a current goal.)

This is just fluff as far as I am concerned so use whatever makes sense from an RP point of view. Heck if you want Nyd to tattoo her spells on her person then go for it.

As you've probably seen by now, I am all about the story.

Oh yes, I've seen the quirk list. I was really liking the, "You analyze (out loud) the potential threat posed by every creature you meet." and "You don’t understand clothing beyond its utility and assume that what a creature wears denotes its job and status."

For magic items I was looking at several from the Eberron Guide, but am not sure if they count as minor or not.

More specifically, I am looking at the Everbright Lantern, and an Imbued Wood Wand.

Also, are we going to be using Eberron's optional two-handed focus rule? (In which case I am more inclined for an Imbued Wood Rod.)

This sounds like a fun group!

I have a meeting right now, but after, I'll make my proper introduction, create the alias, etc. BRB!

I've placed a link to Xanathar's Magic Item Tables in the Campaign Info tab.

Everbright Lantern and an Imbued Wood Wand are fine.

Let's not use Eberron's optional two-handed focus rule.

Looking forward to those quirks being used in play.

I have the magic item tables, Eberron is newer than Xanathar's so those two items aren't on it.

The list of Minor Common items isn't great for a Warforged Wizard. Most either don't apply to me because of my natures (armor or something related to breathing) or disobable,

How about a Bag of Holding and a Helm of Comprehend Languages?

Incidentally, I went with Calligraphy Tools. I think Nyd is going to write Warforged children stories. (Or at least attempt to.)

Hi, I'm Guido, a 36 yo Statistician. I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and my posting hours vary, since my responsibilities are not the same every day of the week. But in weekdays I check the forums at least once a day.

I have started playing RPG with DnD3 in 2001 and have had only two major breaks since. I currently have two tables where I DM DnD5 with my homebrew campaign/world. I am currently a player in another game in PbP.

In my off hours I usually hang out with my fiancée, play videogames (Pathfinder: Kingmaker and the TIE fighter PC remaster) or read (currently reading a book about the lost Brazilian cuisine of the natives mixed with the settlers').

Next post will be with Veratash, a young friendly kalashtar. I have a question about HP, though. How are we doing HP? Max at 1st then 1/2+1? Sorry if this has been answered somewhere.

However, feel free to use the items listed to come up with your own unique items. Similar to what Artur did with the collapsible shield.

Comments:

- I think your abilities add up to 25 points instead of 27 (double check);

I really don't like INT under 10 because it is hard to roleplay unless I make the player play stupid so if you did shortchange your abilities, go ahead and raise INT.

Other than that, I think you're done.

BTW, take a look at a modified Wild Magic Surge Table in the Campaign Info tab. I took out two really bad events and two really good events to balance it out. However, this makes the table a little more 'group' friendly.

- check ability points which seem to add up to 22 instead of 27; and
- integrated protection (let's keep that set; I don't like how these current edition warforged could alter their 'armor').

I think that's it.

So PC sheets are rolling in. Great!

I won't wait to check the last two (or recheck the other that had comments) to start the game.

What is holding up the start of the game right now is the PCs connections.

I haven't heard any ideas yet from you guys.

We need to connect Kela, Artur, Nyd, and Tharivol. We could also connect Veratash but that's not necessary.

OPTION 1 - LAST WAR
Artur (front lines), Nyd (front lines?), and Tharivol (forgerer) all participated and perhaps the easiest way is to connect all of you that way.

I'd like some more concrete ideas around this theme (or another).

Thoughts?

How about connecting anyone of the above three with Kela? it needs to be a fairly strong connection for them to go 'visit her'.

Thoughts?

--------------

OPTION 2 - BENEFACTOR
The three above knew each other from the Last War or were brought together to perform small jobs for a certain patron. This patron then sends you off to the Eldeen Reaches to do what? Escort someone back? Take someone there? Retrieve or take something there?Investigate something (what)?

The events that will kick off the campaign will be the 'rescue' of a fugitive from the Shadow Marches so this could not have been planned.

Thoughts?

So I took a look at the backgrounds for Nyd, Kela, and Tharivol, and here are points at which Artur could have intersected with each group member:

- Artur was (effectively) a mercenary captain leading a company of Warforged in the service of Breland. It is entirely possible that Nyd was (even briefly) a part of the same regiment as Artur's company. It's worth noting that even among the otehr Cyrean mercenaries, it was well known that Artur cared deeply for the Warforged assigned to his company.

- During The Last War, several of his men were captured by enemy forces, and Artur would not let it rest. In order to facilitate a rescue, forged documents were needed, and after gathering information, Artur was pointed at Tharivol. Impressed with his work, Artur noted the man's name in case he would need his services in the future.

- During his time as a mercenary after the war ended, Artur could have met Kela during her travels to the Eldeen Reaches while on a job. They could have travelled briefly together, going the same way, until their paths diverged.

These are just some thoughts that I came up with. Then we could have met again when we were all hired to go to the Eldeen Reaches to deliver something to the Gatekeepers? IMO, whatever our reason for being sent should be something that can be settled quickly.

Female Half-Orc (Mark of Finding) Ranger (Horizon Walker) 5

@Fabian, yeah there were some solid improvements for the baseline ranger abilities which I why tend to prefer it, but since the Revised Ranger doesn't let me pick aberrations as a favoured enemy until level 6, I will be going with the Standard Ranger for this game.

Are we using the alternate common languages from the Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron? Kela's racial languages would be Common and Goblin then.

@Vrog, perhaps Kela hired Artur while he was in the Eldeen Reaches for his expertise on strange technology. Her hunting team may have found something odd/dangerous left over from the war and lacked the expertise to properly neutralize it.

Thanks Vrog, I like all these ideas and no, we won't take too long to settle on something and get the game started.

I also like Kela's idea for how she could have met the 'other three'.

I'll wait to hear from the other PCs involved and then make some sort of decision tomorrow.

I aim to start to start the game tomorrow.

The standard ranger should be fine as long as you don't select beast master.

Let's use the languages from Wayfinder's.

Also, I think I told everyone this before but we may make some (hopefully minor) changes once the official 5e Eberron comes out next month.

@Vrog, perhaps Kela hired Artur while he was in the Eldeen Reaches for his expertise on strange technology. Her hunting team may have found something odd/dangerous left over from the war and lacked the expertise to properly neutralize it.

That works great!

Alright, I spend far too long on this, but my profile is at least started. Let me know if I need to make any major changes.

Comments:

- check ability points which seem to add up to 22 instead of 27; and
- integrated protection (let's keep that set; I don't like how these current edition warforged could alter their 'armor').

I think that's it.

if you have some time, you may want to write down what some of these abilities in your sheet so we don't have to go and check every time (at least I do). :)

-I've triple checked my point buy, and so far three different calculators say it is 27 points.

-I didn't plan on changing it anyway, I'm not proficient in any armor so it would hurt me more than help. (Though I did strongly consider getting Light Armor Proficiency so I could get my Proficiency die to armor. In the end I decided I needed the INT more, particularly after I remembered it would increase my prepared spell total.)

-When I have time I will start adding the text, its a lot of abilities, lol.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong...

- final: 12, 14, 14, 16, 12, 8
- subtract 2 points from INT due to ability point increase: 12, 14, 14, 14, 12, 8
- subtract 1 from CON, DEX, and INT due to warforged traits: 12, 13, 13, 13, 12, 8
- values for these abilities: 4+5+5+5+4+0 = 23

???

AH, that's it. I forgot to put the +2 from the feat into my stat bonus.

The stats you calculated were from before that.

All my other stats and skills had already taken this adjustment into account, but I forgot to adjust the stat block.

I'm using one of the old HeroForge Excel sheets to keep track of things for me. It's pre-Eberron (and doesn't have everything from Xanthar's) so I had do to custom work for a few things.

Turn 000 – Arrival

Alright, time to get this game going!

Read the OOC.

Questions, comments, and/or suggestions?

Game on!

M Sorcerer lvl 6 [AC13 | Saves -1 0 +5 0 +3 +7 | Per +3]

Still finishing char, so still OOC...

Ok, I'll review the items, but I've double checked the stats and it's 27.

STR 8 (0)
DEX 10 (2)
CON 14 (7)
INT 8 (0)
WIS 15 (9)
CHA 15 (9)

So, race gives +1 to Wis and Cha, and level 4 gives +2 Cha. Did I miss something?
But I do get the point about the roleplaying. Any ideas? I could put Dex to 8, but I don't like the idea of a gemcutter with negative dexterity (I don't see him as an incapable craftsman). I could put Wis to 14 and live with a +2 bonus, too.

Also, both my background and race give me an additional language, but I have no idea what to pick. I was thinking something related to trading (background) and something related to religion (race). Ideas?

Yes, you missed something. Race: Your Wisdom and Charisma scores both increase by 1. In addition, one ability score of your choice increases by 1.

Languages: Riedran is the common tongue of the continent of Sarlona. Quori is spoken by the kalashtar, spirits native to Dal Quor, and the
Inspired lords of Riedra.

Action 2:
This introspective seemed a little long, but I think it gets all I was going for across.

Nyd of Calling, or just Nyd to allies and...friends, nodded to the stablegirl small, likely trainee-rank, treat value minimal as he recommended that she give the horse an extra ration for commendable service. While short and light for a Warforged, Nyd was still not a light load, and the horse had gone beyond its transportation duties by providing a smooth ride.

Checking his robes was a matter of training. The blue robe may have been the furthest thing from what his training supervisors thought was appropriate, but it had generated the most positive reaction with various people of the civilian-class he had encountered so far. It seemed that the mild color had a calming effect, and allowed the civilian-class to focus less on Nyd’s darker-than-usual wooden armor, and sharper-than-normal features, and more on his ability to complete mission objectives.

The rest of his loadout was similarly light and well maintained, due in part to judicious use of the Prestidigitation Cantrip. His Risian Wood Wand, the only remainder of his time in training, remained carefully sheathed on his right hip alongside Nyd’s metal-sheet spellbook. On his left hip sat his recently acquired Bag of Holding, a truly useful item which greatly simplified storing the remainder of his day-to-day gear.

The first part of the current mission had gone without notable incident. The escort mission of the trainee-rank civilian-class had gone well so far, at least as far as Nyd was concerned. According to the others in his squad, she found the Nyd intimidating, which Nyd found slightly dejecting. I don’t know if we’ve learned anything about her that would make Nyd’s opinion different.

One of Nyd’s most important secondary missions was increasing his ability to relate to the civilian-class. While they were rarely in possession of any combat ability, they frequently had resources that they would exchange for the accomplishing missions on their behalf. Resources that were necessary to maintain readiness and to accomplish many of Nyd’s primary and secondary mission objectives.

The best resource for accomplishing these objectives was Intel and, according to all of Nyd’s research and experience, the civilian-class gave more accurate Intel in the longer term if they weren’t scared of you. This was harder to accomplish when you had been designed to be intimidating. It was possibly useful in combat, rarely useful anywhere else.

This escort mission was not going to directly lead to additional Intel, but it would lead to…money, which was itself a useful resource that could be exchanged for other resources. According to Arthur this mission was particularly valuable, even if the civilian-class was ‘aggravating’.

As for Action 4, Nyd is going to wait for Arthur to go first.

Action 2:
Lords what a ride, and dealing with that child before had not made things any better. Had I my way, I would have just gagged her and thrown her in with the luggage. Thank heavens for Tharivol distracting her
Artur thought as he nudged the horse forward.

The dusty path they had been following for the last two days had left a bad taste in his mouth, even with a kerchief tied across his face to block the worst of it. It was as he was ruminating on their "grand adventure" that the valley itself came into view.

He immediately noted the lack of anything resembling even a rudimentary defensive wall around the village.

This either speaks to a lack of organized threats in the area, or the willingness of the population to forgo the safety of a wall in exchange for having the freedom to come and go as they please. It also likely means that everyone is armed or a spellcaster. or both.

Unconsciously, Artur checked his pistol and changed magazines on it, something that was a habit at this point, and then continued urging the horse forward, now that the end goal was in sight.

As he thought of the goal, Artur's thoughts turned to his friend Kela. If asked why he liked her, Artur couldn't have given a clear answer. He didn't find himself attracted to her in a conventional sense, but he did have to admit that he found both her curiousity and caution in regards to technology to be a welcome change of pace from those who had either one or the other trait. As his mother would often say in his distant childhood, 'Common sense isn't.'

Regardless, he found her dedication to the protection of the natural world to be worthy of respect, and he left the rest of it to the gods.

Finally arriving at the village, Artur dismounted perfunctorily and handed the young woman taking his reins a silver piece for her trouble. He noted Nyd's comments with a sly smirk, yet said nothing.

Action 4:
"Kela!" Artur said with a grin on his face. She was easy to spot among the mostly Human faces, and he made his way over to her and offered her a handshake. Before she could accept, however, Artur retracted his hand and added "Oh, I brought that text you requested." He then returned to his horse and began to rummage through the pack strapped to it's side.

It was then that it finally seemed to register to Artur that he was among a group of people. blinking, he stopped what he was doing and turned to the crowd before adding a weak "hello there."

------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the villagers surveyed the man who called out to Kela, they saw that he was average height and appeared to be average weight. Close-cropped dark hair sat over an angular head, unblemished except for the rather large scar that sat over his left eye, the orb of which was replaced with an expertly cut piece of purple-hued crystal that glowed ever so slightly in the gathering twilight; it was a clear contrast to the aqua green natural eye on the right-hand side.

A black duster jacket covered the long, dark gray shirt and black-dyed leather breeches he wore; both his jacket and breeches fairly bristled with pockets and storage space of varying sizes. An odd belt which seemed to be made up entirely of pouches and strange metallic devices and a pair of engineer's boots completed his ensemble. It seemed well lived in and made for function, not form.

Excellent start! Thank you both.

For some answers...

Nope. Not long at all in my book. Reading about your PCs and your view of the world is what makes this game interesting for me.

Nyd of Calling wrote:

It's your world so make it up. If she confessed to you in private that this was all a ruse then so be it.

Like I said, I expect you to make up these details and I will let you know if they don't 'fit' in my world, like for example, if I had other plans for this girl. However, it is very rare that I change your players' stuff, especially if there's a good scene/story attached to it. I will mostly try to change the story to accomplish the same goal.
