"I don't remember anything specific", Veratash answered Artur. He ignored Nyd's lack of humor.

RECRUITMENT UPDATE
As you probably know from reading the recruitment thread, we'll have a goblin monk tied to the Heirs of Dhakaan (being played by Mishima) joining the party soon.

What you probably didn't know is that someone else contacted me at the same time and I decided to accept another PC into the mix. She will be a shifter barbarian tied to the Gatekeepers (being played by Virtual Tao).

I aim to bring both of these PCs later this week to start playing in earnest.

Mishima, Virtual Tao: feel free to drop in and say hi.

Staggering back to his feet, Artur unbuckled his belt, and set it on the ground. "Science requires sacrifice." muttered Artur before attaching the symbiot to himself in the same location it was attached to the leader.

Elsewhere...

She held on for dear life. Her skittering nails had stripped the bark of the branch in her grasp to raw wood making it slippery and smooth. As the goblin thief inched closer and closer to Zdravko, she could hear the branch starting to crack at its root. She appealed to him in their shared language, but his crude nature made it likely to be all that they shared "This is madness, if you come any closer we're both going to fall."

There was urgency in her voice but not fear. It pained her to realize the words were barely recognizable to this foreign kin...she had literally said 'sniffing-tinkle-pots-of-the-master' instead of the usual words for madness, and perhaps it was too much of a local dialect...or the dumb thief just didn't care. The isolated tribes out here in the Reaches were nothing like the Heirs of Dhakaan.

Suddenly she felt adrenaline shoot through her small frame as her sending stone wriggled its way out of her vest pocket. She tried to pinch it with her feet but missed, and the little baked clay tablet spun wildly to the ground some 100 ft below, shattering into a billion pieces. ::So much for 'can't-be-broken'...:: she thought. It was her only way to contact the khesh'dar, her secretive silent clan. Being absent that device would cause her a major headache if she survived...

She selected a different tactic, rather than appeal to the mind she appealed to the stomach saying exaggeratedly stupidly "Share treats..." motioning with her eyes to a large roast chicken back near the base of the tree.

The other goblin retreated quickly, eager for a meal. What the thief failed to realize, was that the skittering of her nailed fingers on the bark earlier was actually the casting of an illusion. ::Darkness feeds imagination...:: she recited to herself.

Free of distraction, she refocused her ki, feeling it gush forth from the trees, the grass, and the sky until it bundled up like a knot in her core. She shifted the energy to her already strained biceps and pulled herself back up onto the branch.

As the hungry thief tried helplessly to eat the meal that was not there, Zdravko felt her upper thigh nearly tear itself apart as she kiyuped the branch at its weakened point...her martial arts form unquestionable. At that moment, the purpose of every bit of fleshy machinery in her body was to synchronize and collect at that one point of the wood.

Branch and monk came crashing down in splinters...right atop the hungry thief's head.

Slimy Slugs and can't sleep

Action 2

Tharivol paused the gentle interrogation and casually returned to the group. Speaking quietly enough that the prisoner doesn't hear, he said "Alright. They're from the Bonetree Clan in the Shadow Marches and worship Khyber. Their leader is the Revered who controls the black herons. The leader didn't tell them why he wanted Veratash. Can anyone think of anything else you want to know?"

Action 3

The dragonmarked elf looked at the slimy slug with disdain.

Action 4

"We camping here for the night? Set watches?" The minstrel looked to Artur for the decisions, since he was well-practiced.

The little slug wiggled in Artur's fingers and eagerly burrowed itself in the back of his head. Three small spikes appeared in its tri-mandible and the circular orifice presumed to be its mouth secreted some sort of slime. The slime served to coat a spot in Artur's head where the slug attached itself.

Artur did not feel any pain; in fact, the experience was somewhat pleasurable. A slight feeling of euphoria accompanied the attachment of the symbiot. The slug seemed content to just stay hidden in his hair, looking like a thick braid to anyone that took a closer peek.

-----------
OOC: After 24 hours of secreting 'stuff' into you, the symbiot will give you advantage on CON saves. Depending on how much treasure you all obtain, we may upgrade this later in the game.

Artur: this is your 'baby' so feel free to add any and all effects. Does the slug wiggle or become stiff in certain situations (when you eat maybe)? Does it make any sound? Does it move around and attach to different places? All yours...

Nyd looks around the battlefield. "We were not particularly far from town. Might I suggest we return there if full recovery is necessary?

"However, despite the closeness, I would not object to a brief recovery period during which I could recover some spell power."

Nyd takes in the information Tharivol gathered. "Nothing I suspect a low-ranking member would know. Will we be seeking this Revered out?"

If the party decides to short rest, I would spend hit die to recover my damage and use Arcane Recovery to recover a 3rd level spell slot.

No comments; everything seems legit.

Are you sure about the magic items? I was going to suggest a sending stone but you took care of that. :(

How about some 'device' that allows you to whisper a message to a 'shadow' and the shadow then travels to a pre-determined place and whispers the message back. The communication wouldn't be instantaneous like a sending stone, but it would get the message to its destination.

I don't know. Get creative with some other magic item. The party does not need scrolls. :)

Artur internally braced for pain, but as the creature's mandibles inserted themselves into his skin, it tingled, not hurt.

"That's an odd sensation." said Artur to no one in particular.

He then realized that several questions had been asked of him. Wracking his memory, he realized that both Tharivol and Nyd had asked about their immediate plans for resting. Taking a look at everyone, Artur's eyes lingered a tad bit too long on Veritash before moving on; he then said "We should stay the night here. I don't much relish the idea of walking back through the rest of the night with them," Artur jestured towards the crows above them, "flitting about above our head, potentially bringing more of them down on us. This is a good defensive position, so let's at least stay the night here, then decide what to do in the morning."

Artur paused, and then added "At least, that's my plan. If you guys decide that you WANT to talk back tonight, then I guess we're walking back."

Action 2:

I did, indeed, question the hunter telepathically, but not the other questions. It was supposed to be a hint to the other players.

Veratash didn't know what else to ask, but he worried what the group might want to do with the unarmed hunter.

Action 3:

Veratash saw Artur attach the slug to himself incredulously. "Are you sure about that? How do we know you're not going to start hunting me or something?", he asked.

Seeing no further change in the warrior, he relaxed. "Well, I suppose you're just in for the so-called advantages?", he continued a little worried.

Action 4:

The kalashtar considered Tharivol's and Nyd's questions. He preferred going back and sleeping in a warm bed, especially due to the rain. Is it raining still? He tried to sound decisive by saying "Going back to town seems like a better plan", without an idea of how he could go into detail of what "better" meant.

He did address Nyd saying "What all of you are going to do, I don't know, but I intend to go back for my kin who were left imprisoned. Artur, I'm sure you can relate, being a military man, that I don't wish to leave people behind." Thinking about his words, he went on resolute saying "Well, I know I left them behind once, but this time, I am not running away again."

There were some things I liked on the list, but I figured having a wizard with haste and dispel magic was better than any of them. My original four choices were wand of pyrotechnics, talking doll, immovable rod, and alchemy jug. The talking doll is basically a reusable/infinite magic mouth which appeals to me. But I didn't realize we could design our own items, I'll turn the wheels a bit.

Yeah, I sound like a broken record but feel free to reskin anything and everything. Just keep things on a comparable power level and design your own stuff. Lots more entertainment value if give the item a history, special appearance, a quirk, etc.

Action 1:

Veratash looked at the others and said "Let's take him with us. Maybe he can be swayed to our side after he sees a little mercy". He clearly bore the hope of the young.

Action 3:

Veratash gave Artur an odd look. It seemed he didn't understand the soldier's words. He payed it no mind and called himself stupid.

Action 4:

Veratash walked over to the girl in the corner and said "Hi, I'm Veratash. I'm sorry to bother you, but could you tell me something about those birds?"

The Approach...

Zdravko always took a pause at sunset to collect her thoughts...something about the reds and oranges evoked her old subterranean tunnels, the light of lava flows on dark stone...or a thousand folded blade freshly forged from her hobgoblin masters.

But a streak of black cut through her reverie from the south. Her first thought was of the hunt...her clan held many tales of ancient diatryma, great flightless birds of the underworld able to feed a full 3 score.

Any appetite quickly turned to pure revulsion and terror as she observed more closely. She could swear she saw one with a face pulling back completely inside out, letting the fleshy part out. Another had grotesque worm-like tendrils where rigid claws should be, she would claim. They fed on each other freely, yet did not fear to be together...most unnatural.

Zdravko struggled to keep the pace, driven by her training to seek this kind of corruption. She caught a break the next day when suddenly the horror-flock seemed to hit a solid brick wall in mid air, and deflect away like water crashing on rock. Nothing but a few raised stones below on the ground.

It wasn't until she was within the circle of stones did she realize it was a place of a particular power: ::Children-of-the-scaled-apostate...:: as the goblins called Gatekeepers, taught their druidic magics by the ancient black dragon Vvaraak. A tingle went up her spine, but not from any magical nonsense...her quarry was at last upon her.

Action 4

Quote:
Veratash walked over to the girl in the corner and said "Hi, I'm Veratash. I'm sorry to bother you, but could you tell me something about those birds?"

She was drinking a nasty looking concoction out of a clear mug, the fluid itself green, frothy and blood thick. She took a long draught before "4 days I've trailed them...always a step ahead, they were. Here's the thing: they aren't birds at all. No raptor of victorious sky that screams the warrior's call has an inside-out-face. No colored nestling that gifts its feathers to the duur'kala for headdress has worms-for-claws."

She took another drink, seemingly trying to shake the image from her mind "No flock of..." she took another pause "No group of any honorable creatures feeds upon each other. No...this is corruption, you see. I saw them turned by the standing stones of the Gatekeepers...any other creature outside of Khyber would turn towards that tranquil energy."

She sighed "I know not why they linger here, but it has afforded me a brief respite. Veratash? I am Zdravko...huntress of the forgotten."

As the discussion turned against his suggestion of just resting here, Artur's gaze turned towards the prisoner. He started to reach for his pistol, but he knew that there would likely be complaints from the others; choosing his battles, Artur said aloud to no one in particular "He's your responsibility now. I'm not going to bother slowing for him and I don't really care what happens to him, unless he gets free and tries to kill one of us. That'll be on you." As he finished speaking, he looked pointedly at both Veratash and Tharivol.

During the trek back to the village, Artur said "We'll talk about the future in the morning Veratash after we get some sleep."

Artur slept well the previous evening, even with the racous croaking of the herons outside the building. Given what had happened yesterday, Artur felt surprisingly good. Maybe it's some left over adrenaline, or maybe sleeping in a comfortable bed did it, but I haven't sleep that well recently. thought Artur to himself as he descended the stairs, minus his utility belt and overcoat.

Hearing Sandar's proclamation, Artur walked up to the young woman in the tavern room and said "So, what do you know about what's going on here?"

Magic Item Proposals:

Theme: The Silent Clan has alchemical and herbal tools related to distraction, escape, and info gathering of a mystical nature.

Wristlet of Crystal Drops - reflavored wand of pyrotechnics. The bracelet secretes an alchemical liquid that quickly solidifies into a hollow pointed star, like a shuriken. It can be thrown ridiculously far and shatters with a vacuum bang and multicolored sparks. Same uses as normal wand.

Sheathe of Shards - new. A normal tanto (dagger) that has a loaded mass of red pepper, pollen dust, and iron fillings near the top of the scabbard. When drawn, the mass is ejected into the eyes of the target, causing blindness on failed save. 1/day?

Red Paste of the Duur'kala - new. There's a 2nd level spell I really love from the 5e Midgard campaign setting called 'Shadows Brought to Light'. Basically the target makes a charisma save and on a failure, its shadow comes to life and speaks 1 secret out loud the target has been hiding from everyone. This paste would do the same, action to squish it in my fingers and trace out the symbols. Maybe 3 uses then gone forever?

Root of the Fallen - new. Based on the drug Requiem from Midgard. If someone grinds up this root and smokes it, they can cast Speak with the Dead. Unfortunately, the root is highly addictive and you must make a disease save or take -2 to attacks, saves, ability checks. Save can be made each day, 2 consecutive saves required to be cured. 1 use then gone forever?

Action 1:

Veratash silently accepted Artur's terms. He sent the hunter a telepathic message "It doesn't have to be like this, you know? We can be friends." He offered the prisoner a smile.

Action 4:

Hearing Zdravko's mention of huntress, Veratash shivered. He tried to hide by showing a smile. Of course, he had no idea about what the goblin was talking, but it seemed she was even more troubled about them than he was. Unlike her, he wanted to go away from the damned creatures.

"I think I might be the reason they linger. I was being.... chased by them", he said avoiding the word "hunted". "They guided a group of hunters from some Bonetree clan towards me. What they want with me I don't know, but I'm not hoping to find out. Can you tell me anything about that?", he said, hoping the goblin would keep on being cooperative.

The hunter became apprehensive when the kalashtar approached. It was a mix of loathing for an enemy that bested him, the desire to capture him and gain status in his clan, and the fear that the man 'got in his head'.

He backed up as much as he could and bared his teeth like a cornered beast. His unconscious thoughts were Get away from me![i], quickly followed by, [i]If only I wasn't restrained.

OOC: what did we do with the prisoner? Left him in farm or took him back to tavern?

Female Shifter Barbarian 6 | AC: 17; Init: +2; Perc: +4 (Passive 14) Darkvision

Before
The tracks had been many and deep, a small group of hunters moving at speed. Inhaling sharply and deeply, Briar concentrated on the figments of scent still lingering in the air. Faint sharp miasma of sweat, bitter tincture of their faded war paint, the reek of unwashed leather almost eclipsing the rest. She shook her head roughly to clear it, then took a lukewarm sip from her waterskin. She grimaced, no time to look for a spring so that would have to do for now.

It had been a day or so since she had picked up their trail, she had been moving constantly since, and they could not be too far now. She adjusted her grip on the blackened haft of her weapon, and began to run again.

Action 4:

Briar shook her head as she regarded Kela

The air was thick with blood last night when I got here, no wonder given the fight you and your companions gave the hunters.

She stared at the half-orc's recent wounds, frowning.

I will do as you request, it is not a big ask to aid a sister Gatekeeper. After all, trouble seldom rides alone and it would be a shame to miss aother fight and let you have all the fun.

The corners of the shifter's mouth turned up slightly in attempted humor, but her eyes lingered on Kela's injuries.

This Kalashtar, he has fled far with the black herons on his tail. Harbingers of ill fortune, I wonder if he knows any more about their purpose here?

She gestures at the building

I should perhaps make my presence known, if you wouldn't mind?

She waits for Kela to lead, then enters the inn.

The Inn
Through the doorway ducks a tall young woman dressed in dull and faded armor, a bladed staff clutched in her hand. She glances at the corners of the room and her gaze quickly flicks between each of the people present. She absent-mindedly tucks her braided hair back over her shoulder. Moving to the bar she leans against it

Water, cold as you can please Anna

Anna's eyes went wide with joy as she heard Briar. She virtually jumped over the counter and hung from the ranger's neck in an effusive hug.

"Oh, it's been so long."[b] She chided the woman, [b]"I told you to come and stay here." She lowered her voice, "You're much more fun than Kela. Let her go and 'roam the lands' or whatever you call it. You can stay here with us!"

She set a pitcher of cold water in front of her, "So how long are you staying? And where have you been this time?"

Action 1
Nyd seems to consider the prisoner briefly. "I am not sure what to do with this one. If he leaves or escapes he might be able to give intelligence to this Reverend, but killing him in his current state seems like a . . ."

Nyd trails off searching his vocabulary for a word that would convey the correct meaning, before settling on; "Politician thing to do. I am open to alternate suggestions."

Action 2
Nyd settles on the inn floor before engaging senty mode. He reviews the days actions and tries to formulate additional tactics that might increase his efficiency if additional conflicts were to reoccur.

Idlely Nyd flicks a few rocks out of small cracks in his foot. Unfortunately nothing immediately springs to mind with Nyd's current resources, he should see about increasing those, including getting the materials necessary to summon a new familiar.

Having decided on at least a preliminary outline for future actions, Nyd settles into a pose that would enable him to rapidly climb to his feet if it was necessary and engaged sentry mode.

Action 4

Action 1:

Veratash continued to communicate with the prisoner. "Well, if you start speaking any language I know, I'll gladly stop communicating like this. Don't worry, I'm not reading your thoughts or anything. Not yet anyway. I have to tell you though... Those guys over there...", he said signaling towards Tharivol and Artur, then continued with a slight lie "They want to kill you. You see, you're an inconvenience, and they're experienced soldiers who just get rid of inconveniences like you. I convinced them to keep you alive, because I said you would behave and be helpful. But in reality, I don't want to kill you. I think you haven't been given a choice, and follow this... Revered, because you don't know any other life. I want to offer you another life. But in order to do that, you have to help me convince them over there that you should be kept alive. So don't you want to be helpful and give us some useful information?"

Veratash was truthful in his intent and really believed the man wasn't beyond saving. The hunter heard the message in his head with some psychic emphasis in key words and felt a generally good feeling as he heard. This was a technique that Veratash was very used to doing while communicating a friendly message.

Assuming I can make a persuasion check telepathically.

Persuasion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Advantage from racial psychic glamour: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

Veratash took in Nyd's input. He said in a not very loud voice "Remember earlier that I said that I could mess with people's minds? I'm trying some of that. Let me do my magic. I mean... do my thing, do my thing. I don't do magic, I told you!", he snapped somehow confusing himself.

Action 4:

Veratash watched the large woman enter the inn and, for a moment, he thought she was going for him. Then, he relaxed and returned his attention to Zdravko.

Hearing Nyd's comment nearby, he thought to himself I don't want to go back in the rain. He was glad and warm inside the inn. But he knew he would have to go.

Science requires sacrifice

Action 1

Tharivol watched and waited for Veratash to finish. He had seen cultist's before. They were not ones to be dissuaded from a life's purpose too quickly. He waited in the farm house ready to tie up the loose end.

Action 2

Artur shocked Tharivol's sense of preservation sometimes.

Action 4

Tharivol finished his four hour trance and arose refreshed. His morning routine of magical hygiene ensured that he headed downstairs as elegant as ever.

He thanked Anna and enjoyed breakfast ignoring the croaking black herons. Absorbing the sounds of his surroundings, the minstrel started humming a discordant harmony mimicking the heron calls. He surveyed the relatively empty tavern looking for a little gal. It took him a few minutes to realize that the innkeeper referred to that goblin as a gal. Then, the elf disguised his shock at how articulate the goblin was.

As he started to stretch his legs, he watched the shifter enter the inn with casual familiarity and menace. At least, they would have more beef when the next wave of hunters arrived. I wonder where this is headed?

Action 2:
Artur stared askance as the girl began her rather disjointed explanation of the herons. When she cleaned up her language some, he said "Nice to meet you Zdravko, my name is Artur D'Cannith. I have some further questions, if you don't mind. First, what is your native language? It's clear from the way you speak that you're more comfortable using something other than the common tongue. Secondly, Are you saying that the Herons are cannibals? Third, when you say The Forgotten, what specifically are you referring to?"

Action 3:

"You're right, Nyd, we should make a trip to the ruins. I have a feeling though that there is another priority that is more pressing, at least for some of us."

Action 4:

Artur's interrogation was cut short by the new face entering the tavern room. Mithral armor? I haven't seen that much of it in a while. Well, I suppose that she can handle herself, but she's probably a warrior rather than a soldier

Having satisfied his need for situational awareness, Artur returned his gaze to the young woman in front of him, clearly awaiting answers to his previous questions.

Briar's black eyes momentarily went wide with shock as Anna swept in to hug her, then her expression swiftly softened in to affection.

I've missed you too she returned the hug, briefly placing her forehead against Anna's in her usual greeting to those she knew well.

It was late when I got close by, I didn’t want to wake anyone

She nodded upstairs

Besides, you seem to have somewhat of a full house according to Kela

She took a sip of the water, grateful for the cold and clean taste.

Roaming is part of my duties, but you know you're my favorite Inn to visit in all the Reaches. Maybe one day I'll retire here!

She smiles, hint of sharp teeth under smooth lips

As it happens Kela has asked me to stick around for a while and I'm happy to do so, maybe you can find somewhere for me to string my hammock?

She props her spear in a corner and turns to the rest of the room.

I'm Briar, also a Gatekeeper. I was tracking those warriors that caught up with you yesterday, Kela tells me you fought well.

She falters slightly, perhaps unused to addressing so many people at once.

Look I'm here to help, I can guide and protect you. Do you have a idea of where you want to go from here?

As Sandar asks about the birds she shrugs

With a swarm that size, even with a proper weapon it would take a chunk of time. Not to mention if they decide to turn on their attackers.

She muses

It’s no use as a weapon, but as they avoid the Standing Stones, we could trek through there and see if they ‘lose the scent’? At least we could try and lead them away from here.

Quote:
"I think I might be the reason they linger. I was being.... chased by them", he said avoiding the word "hunted". "They guided a group of hunters from some Bonetree clan towards me. What they want with me I don't know, but I'm not hoping to find out. Can you tell me anything about that?", he said, hoping the goblin would keep on being cooperative.

Her eyes narrowed as she tried to understand "Why would you say that about yourself. What reason would those creatures have for pursuing you over any other...?"

History, Bonetree Clan: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

"Wait...you said Bonetree..." Perhaps she realizes something from that check, perhaps not.

Zdravko's mouth hung open for a moment, her little pointy teeth shining in the candlelight, finally turning into a wide grin "My native language? I'll give you a hint...or a skull-bop as we say, it starts with 'g'." She wasn't being rude, just playfully sarcastic.

"But no, friend. Not just cannibals...the darker type of endocannibalism, consumption within the tribe. Many natural creatures consume their own species...chickens for example. But to consume your own faction...such is found only in the deepest depths of hell." Finishing her drink "That's evidence see, of corruption."

"Forgotten are the daelkyr...shapers-of-flesh. None remember their destruction of the Dhakaani."

"They must be eradicated. Their source must be tracked and the source likewise destroyed. A point, a tactical edge perhaps...upon meeting the barrier of the standing stones they shrieked as if in warning. If we could deafen or silence them, remove that signal, they might enter the circles more deeply and feel the full strength of rejection." It was clear, Zdravko meant war.

Artur Chuckled and said "You seem to be missing alot of fur for a Gnoll, but I take your point."

Artur pondered for a moment, then said "Sandar, can you bring out that map I made you?"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

While Sandar obliged, Artur began explaining the situation: "Okay, so apparently these Bonetree folks decided to capture Veratash and his companions, who were in the area....I don't think I got the full story why, actually. Regardless, they captured them on the order of their leader, a guy they call the Revered. The Bonetree apparently worship Kyber or something in Kyber; it wasn't clear to me which. Veratash managed to escape, which started this whole thing. Kela, Tharivol, Nyd, and myself were all looking for some creatures who killed...a cow, was it, Sandar? Anyway, we ran across Veratash, helped him out, and he told us that he was being hunted. Not wanting to put these folks in danger," Artur gestured to Sandar, "Kela made the call to draw the Herons, which apparently are the hunting hounds of this tribe, away. We found a defensible position last night and upgraded it, then dug in. Fortunately, it wasn't long before the Herons led a pack of hunters our way. We managed to take them out, and interrogated one before dealing with him, and then we came back here to regroup."

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Artur accepted the rectangular slate back from Sandar and sat it on the table before he continued: "Okay, so we have three real issues to deal with: 1) We need to find a way to deal with the Herons; 2) we need to know where The Revered hangs his hat; and 3) we need to figure out what to do about the security of the valley."

As he finished ennumerating, Artur pushed the button on the slate, which caused a holographic image of the valley to appear floating above the slate.

"We'll deal with the first two in a moment, but let's deal with the third one now. As you can see, there are no real natural defenses to the valley; likely, they haven't needed them yet. The question then becomes: Were there Herons here last night while we were gone??" Artur paused to allow Sandar to answer.

After a pause in introductions and summary of recent escapades, the dragonmarked elf leveled his gaze at Veratash. "I agree with Artur. I don't think we have the full story of why the kalashtar was captured. I don't think we have all the information in this room on the table."

"We're trying to piece together pieces of the Bonetree clan, Khyber cultists, black herons, Revered. But, these are all side pieces of the puzzle. I think Veratash still holds some center pieces of the puzzle that would make the picture much clearer, about what's going on around here." Information was power.

Action 1:

Veratash didn't look as the deed was done. After that, he walked silently, unhappy.

Action 2:

Veratash shivered at the goblin's words. He didn't know much about the daelkyr, but he was sure it wasn't a good sign. He commented "We should shoot them out of the sky, then. End their miserable lives." He didn't seem to have slept well.

Action 4:

Veratash replied to Briar "Hello, I'm Veratash. I will require a guide to Zarash’ak when these herons have been dealt with."

Action 5:

Veratash wanted to interrupt Artur but didn't find a reasonable moment to do so. After he finished, the kalashtar said "Well, I suppose we have time to talk about the whole story now. You've saved my life, risking your own. This earns you what I remember at least." He sounded like he wasn't keen on telling people about himself easily. But he was sincere in being thankful. Briar had a vote of confidence by Kela and Zdravko seemed to hate the demonic birds more than him, so he didn't feel uncomfortable with her hearing either.

"It all started in Sharn a few months ago. Dravago if I recall correctly. I had met two other kalashtar. Sorashana and Thakashtai. They're brother and sister. Sorashana is so serious, very keen on doing everything perfectly right. And Thakashtai is playful sometimes, but always does as his sister says." Veratash paused for a moment, apparently in deep thought. He continued "They're scholars who studied the Eberron dragonshard for a while, but they want to know its reaction to some substances and their psychic abilities, I think. I never really understood what it was they were saying, when they talked about it." He smiled at that memory.

"Someday we were approached by some man named Dah'mir, who claimed he was also a scholar and to be interested in the relationship of dragonshards and psionics. We should have known, then, that this seemed a little too convenient. I suppose we were naive. He wanted to meet us in the Shadow Marches, claiming he had discovered interesting dragonshards. Also, he was prospecting for shards in a property of his. We were so excited. Sorashana even said her first joke, I think. It didn't come out very nice, but we laughed anyway." Veratash seemed to be hardening as the story went on.

"We took a Lyrandar ship to Zarash’ak. Dah'mir was waiting for us with some other people. He took us to his mansion in the city. It was very close to the water, it even had a dock! I remember the doors were blue, and the construction was old, but very large." He made a pause at this moment, and looked as if he were in pain.

"This is where things start getting hazy. I don't remember things very well at this point. Only that I was taken upriver in a boat. It were a few days, I think. We stopped at a tribe. Maybe it were the same tribesmen that we fought yesterday." He suppressed the memory of the slaughter of unarmed prisoners. "All I remember then are flashes. First, some marshlands. Then there was an underground laboratory. In there, I remember some device being rested over my head for experimentation. I screamed like I was being tortured. But I wasn't being tortured... Somehow I managed to pull away from the contraption. I managed to find my stuff and run. I ran so much. I found myself going north, and that is when the herons started following me. I only managed to run by throwing my followers off-scent with some psychic powers and the quality of my cloak here. I counted almost two weeks before I was ambushed by those displacer beasts you saw." There were tears in his eyes as he finished.

The tale of Veratash was interrupted by Jabal, one of the stableboys who came running in, muddy boots leaving imprints all over the tavern. Jabal was younger than Anna, probably around 8 or 10 years old but that didn't matter; everyone worked in a frontier town.

Anna started yelling at him for leaving the tavern all muddied up when he pulled up one of the black herons by his feet. The bird dangled from his hands, obviously dead. "I got him! I got him! It was me that got him."

Sandar shook his head, "You both have about four or five dead birds out there. Why did you dirty the tavern with your muddy boots for this one?"

The boy got close, "Lokee here pa..."

The black heron had a third eye. And as they all gathered around for a better look., the eye blinked...

OOC: Excellent stuff! Veratash' tale is spot on.

A couple of housekeeping things. Please write in past tense so it makes it easier for me to do the turn recaps.

@Briar: please add quotes (") around your speech.

You only know them from your recent roamings to be one of the many clans in the Shadow Marches. These clans are mostly primitive and consist of a combination of humans, orcs, and halforcs. The good ones follow the ancient druid teachings of the Gatekeepers while the bad ones worship different aberrations (from gibbering mouthers all the way up to Daelkyrs)

OOC: it sounds like the consensus is to go to the "Standing Stones' to investigate.

Speak up or that's where you'll go when I recap later today.

No worries Fabian, will do :)

Briar nodded at Tharivol's words, the more everyone knew the better decisions the group could make.

She listened intently to Veratash's story, nodding and frowning in turn as the tale unfolded.

"I have never heard of this 'Revered', but if they are connected to or even the source of these corrupt things then they must be dealt with"

She nodded to the goblin

"So yes as you say, these corrupted things must be destroyed. And yes, perhaps we should visit the Stones and see whether we can use their power to help. One thing though, I don’t recognise you, or your markings, I must ask where are you from and what is your intent here in the Reaches?"

Any potential answer was interrupted as Jabal entered the room, Briar tensed as she saw what he was carrying. As the eye blinked her lip curled in a snarl.

"We should burn them… as quickly as we can…"

Yes, and I think I understand. Btw, my posting habit is a bit crunched on Tues-Fri but opens up much more on other days. But I will always get at least 1 post per day.

Could Tharivol have collected his arrows after the last battle, or do I have to remember each time?

Action 1

The dragonmarked elf was not completely convinced that Artur had the best course of action, but he had nothing better to do than to follow. He still needed some more time away from Sharn to lay low. And, the village was not exactly entertaining.

Action 3

Along the trail, the minstrel continued to mature the haunting harmony of the croaking of the black herons. He tested it with several interesting phrases that were as yet unused.

Action 4

Wisdom DC 12: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Tharivol paused his current song and reached out his hearing to listen for the melody of the gibbering and pick-produced percussion but quickly lost himself in the noise becoming dazed and confused.
